On today's episode, I talk to musician Krisitin Hersh. Originally from Atlanta, Kristin's family moved to Newport, RI when she was six. Here she met Tanya Donelly, and they formed Throwing Muses when they were teenagers. After moving to Boston years later, they quickly became part of the burgeoning scene that produced everyone from the Pixies to the Lemonheads, and the band similarly found success. Since 1986, they've released eleven albums on labels like 4AD, Rykodisc and Fire Records. In addition, Kristin has also recorded a dozen albums under her own name and as 50 Foot Wave, she has recorded two wonderful albums as well. And as always with guests who have had prolific careers, this is just the tip of the iceberg! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter. In this supersized episode, we dive deep into the most influential records that have soundtracked the lives of Ted Asregadoo, his former colleagues, listeners, and even his daughter Maya! First up, a blast from the past! Ted's former iHeartMedia co-worker Michael McGauley returns to the pod, sharing his top 10 picks, heavily influenced by the classic rock giants of the 60s and 70s. Names like The Who, Led Zeppelin, and Steely Dan paint a picture of Michael's musical foundation. Then, Ted takes the mic, tracing his musical journey chronologically. From the early sparks ignited by KISS, Rush, and the Pretenders, we travel through Dire Straits, X, and Kate Bush, culminating in the present with artists like Steven Wilson and Tanya Donelly. But wait, there's more! In the second segment, we open the floor to Planet LP listeners and guests. iHeartMedia reporter Jeff Knox brings the punk rock energy with NOFX and Pennywise, while another iHeart album from Ted and Michael's past, Andrea Winkler, showcases her diverse tastes, ranging from Hanson's pop to E-40's hip-hop. Independent musician Nat Jay shares her love for Janet Jackson and John Mayer, while Big Stir Records recording artist Dolf Chaney champions the timeless sounds of The Beatles and XTC. Former Seeing Double member Allie Sandt reveals her Paul Simon and Steely Dan obsession, and Ted's daughter Maya chimes in with her Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, and Paramore favorites. Finally, Ted sits down with his wife Julie for an intimate conversation. She unveils her own top 10, featuring a captivating mix of artists like The Beatles, XTC, 'Til Tuesday, The Cure, The Waifs, and New Order. This episode is a treasure trove of musical discovery, guaranteed to inspire you to explore your musical DNA. P.S. On today's episode, I talk to musician Tanya Donelly. Originally from Newport, Rhode Island, Tanya founded not just one, but three, incredible 20th century bands. As a teenager in the 1980s, she formed Throwing Muses with her step-sister Kristin Hersh and performed with them through 1991. During this same time, she founded The Breeders with Kim Deal and co-wrote the first album Pod. Tanya left both groups though to form Belly, where she was the principal songwriter and frontperson. Their first album Star was a huge hit, although the group then broke up after their second album, which started Tanya's solo career. Since then, she's released numerous albums and EPs on 4AD, performed again with Throwing Muses & Belly, and contributed to more albums than I can possibly list here in a short bio! Since Joey's death in 2010, we have produced 5 charity compilation CDs featuring rare and previously unreleased music from nationally known, award-winning musicians.   Our CDs are all available as digital downloads. Radio stations from Australia to the UK to South America to Japan to Sweden and everywhere in between have played our songs. CDs have been downloaded in over 25 countries worldwide.   Joey's Song was started in 2010 following the death of four-year-old Joey Gomoll, who passed one week shy of his fifth birthday. Joey suffered from a rare and debilitating form of epilepsy known as Dravet Syndrome. Dravet's caused persistent seizures which were never able to be controlled through medications leading to severe learning disabilities. While Dravet's robbed Joey of the ability to speak, Joey remained a happy and fun-loving child. He was happiest when music was playing, allowing him to hum, drum, and sing in his own way. To be present when music was playing meant only one thing, that Joey would soon have you dancing and enjoying the music with him.

Our guest today is a great one: Seattle-based photographer Mike Hipple, author of the book Lived Through That: ‘90s Musicians Today. The 144-page book features portraits of dozens of artists who were popular in the ‘90s, among them Nirvana's Krist Novoselic, Belly's Tanya Donelly, Arrested Development's Speech, and one of my all time favorites, Cracker's (and Camper Van Beethoven's) David Lowery. Welcome back to the Rock 'n Roll Ghost Podcast. On this week's episode, our 100th (!!!) the Ghost speaks with musicians Brian Sullivan (Dylan in the Movies) and Tanya Donelly (Throwing Muses, The Breeders, Belly) about their new collaboration, The Loyal Seas. Out now via American Laundromat Records, The Loyal Seas' Strange Mornings in the Garden, is an absolutely beautiful set of songs that showcase both Sullivan and Donelly's talents. The pair discuss how they met and began to collaborate, how the album came together during the pandemic, their influences, tour plans and Donelly hints that her band Belly may be close to getting its catalog of music away from the record label and into their possession. "The Indie Rock Grand Slam" Alright, so Tanya Donelly is one of the few to have completed the indie rock grand slam. In tennis, it’s the Australian, the French, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open and in music terms, it’s being in three undeniably great bands and then having a successful, critically acclaimed slo carer. Think about it—how many people can you name who have done this? Donelly was in Throwing Muses, the Breeders and the Grammy nominated Belly and her critically acclaimed solo career, bolstered by albums like Love Songs For Underdogs is impossible to deny. The Rhode Island-born musician is not only a magnetic figure, with tons of onstage charisma, she’s a brilliant and evocative lyricist, whose work is a dreamy blend of Anne Sexton, Wallace Stevens and Leonard Cohen. Heavily imagistic and loaded with mysterious symbols that shimmer and fade and turn to gold then dissolve in the dark and rise again as stars with colors you’ve never seen before, Donelly's work really sticks with you. There are shipwrecks, and moonbeams and rain and weird lights and dogs with seek through skin—you know, the kind of skin you can see through. The fact is, Tanya Donnelly is a fascinating and brilliant writer as well as being a fascinating and brilliant singer. Her vocal gymnastics are subtle, powerful and deeply arresting. She’s a mysterious and captivating artist and on her new album along with the Tarkington Sisters, Donelly covers some of her favorite tracks by The Go-Go’s, Leonard Cohen, Kirsty MacColl, Split Enz, Linda Ronstadt, The Pretenders, Wings and Mary Margaret O’Hara. In this chat, Donelly talks to Alex about being an introvert, her love of Echo and the Bunnymen and how long it took her to feel comfortable onstage. She also talks about how a clean house is perfect for writing, being creative in the time of Covid and why Elvis Perkins knocks her out….

Few can rival the indie rock pedigree of Tanya Donelly. At the age of 15, she cofounded 4AD stalwarts Throwing Muses with best-friend-turned-step-sister Kristin Hersh. Seven years later, she joined forces with Kim Deal on her then-side project, The Breeders. But it was the formation of Belly the following year that really allowed Donelly to shine as both a front woman and songwriter, scoring one of the era’s most memorable singles, “Feed the Tree” in 1993. After a less than amicable breakup in the mid-90s, the musician began a decades-spanning solo career, culminating in the five column “Swan Song Series” in 2013-2014. In recent years, Donelly has found a second career, working as a postpartum doula for new parents, even as the siren call of music has beckoned to her yet again through recent projects, including Belly’s 2016 reunion.

Andrew couldn't join in this week, so Emily called up her friend Jim Bryson, a prize-winning Canadian singer-songwriter, musician, and producer! Some names of note Jim has worked with include Oh Susanna, Little Scream, The Skydiggers and Kalle Mattson.  He's toured with Kathleen Edwards, The Weakerthans and The Tragically Hip. To kick it off Jim makes up ideas about what religion Andrew is (imagining he's his favorite kind of religion) and spends a lot of time and energy sounding as good as possible on the podcast. They talk about Guild Starfires, Fender Starcasters, building a custom Jazzmaster one part at a time, and the kinda-guitar kinda-mandocello Emily loaned to Jim. Emily talks about the progress she's making on her custom mustang/bronco hybrid. Big ups to Sean Arbow from Gunstreet Wiring for helping Emily with that!   Emily gets Tanya Donelly confused with Juliana Hatfield and may never recover from the embarrassment.   They spend probably too much time converting temperature between metric and imperial. They also mention toasted ravioli.    Oh yeah, Jim also discusses his late cat's love of licking noses and its sort of inappropriate name.     This week's episode is sponsored by Wrist Grips! Wrist Grips are compression wrist warps designed for musicians with wrist pain (like Jim and Emily).   Have opinions on things? Join our Facebook group and become part of the conversation! The Mt. Hood fuzz pedal by Spruce Effects is now available! There will only be 10 ever sold in pink, so don’t wait too long to buy. The Mt. Hood has its humble beginnings as the first ever series of Big Muff, the Triangle version. We ditched the tone control for a passive 3 band eq tone stack, added a presence control after the last gain stage for more tone shaping, put a footswitchable Germanium boost with gain and tone controls, and a diode switch to add an extra order of magnitude of tonal options.

The shadow of Kim Deal and Tanya Donelly looms large over 1990s alternative and indie rock. They were both members of seminal 1980s bands, Deal in the Pixies, and Donelly in Throwing Muses, and had second acts in the 90s in their own bands, The Breeders and Belly. For one album, before Kim's sister Kelley joined the band, Donelly joined forces with Deal on the 1990 album Pod by The Breeders, then conceived as a side project for the two. The result is a subtle and restrained record that only hints at the pop prowess the two would unleash with future singles like "Last Splash" and "Feed The Tree." With engineer Steve Albini behind the board, the album pushes the artists to work with space, finding equal footing for all the instruments. For some, the deliberate nature may turn plodding, but the atmosphere created is one truly unique, and it's clear why musicians like Kurt Cobain would find the tension between hard hitting drums, melodic bass lines and stripped down guitar lines so appealing.   Songs In This Episode:   Intro - Happiness Is A Warm Gun 14:44 - Glorious 17:02 - Oh! 23:15 - Fortunately Gone Outro - Hellbound   To support the podcast, join us at Patreon for bonus content and more. Kristin Hersh was born in Atlanta and grew up in Newport, Rhode Island. Kristen began playing guitar at age 9 and by the time she was 14 she’d talked her friend Tanya Donelly into starting a band. They called themselves “Throwing Muses.” Unbeknownst to them at the time, the band would go on to enjoy a long career and international success. After the band broke up Kristin wrote many solo albums, started the rock band 50FOOTWAVE, and wrote two memoirs. Kristin is also the mother of four sons. In this episode we discuss her mental health misdiagnosis, having a baby and a new record at age 19, her son’s kidnapping and both homeschooling and unschooling her kids out on the road. I spoke with Kristin over Skype from her recording studio in Rhode Island in January of 2018.
