Andy Dowling of LORD & the Andy Social Podcast & I have a conversation about his 1st brews, the soundtrack to his youth, his 1st shows, podcasting, LORD's "UNDERCOVERS VOL.1", how he has been filling the void & his hangover cure. Throughout this conversation, Andy was drinking a Nort 's "Refreshing Ale" the Non-Alcoholic Ale while I enjoyed Third Moon Brewing x BRAND OF SACRIFICE 's "LIFEBLOOD" which was brewed as a part of Brewtal North America. This killer 8% DIPA with Lactose poured out with a gorgeous deep yellow veil, slapped ripe mangoes on the nose & smashed a sweet sticky pineapple finish. A killer brew!!! Episode #42 is here with my good friend Andy Dowling. He's the host of the Self Starter & Andy Social Podcasts, & the bassist for legendary Aussie metal legends LORD (whose new album "Fallen Idols” is out August 1st).⬇️Get it EVERYWHERE here⬇️https://fanlink.to/hypermanicnoizeThis is part #2 of our chat. Last week was a lot of crazy shit about living in central Queensland, and in part two we get a lot deeper and more personal. Tis quite a philosophical & thought provoking episode (a stark contrast to the ridiculous direction of part one). Listen to part #1 first ya goose! It's a great chat with two great guys with great hair and great cd collections. It's just great. He's the host of the Self Starter & Andy Social Podcasts, & the bassist for legendary Aussie metal legends LORD (whose new album "Fallen Idols” is out August 1st).⬇️Get it EVERYWHERE here⬇️https://fanlink.to/hypermanicnoize Andy & I have been on each other's shows, so you're no doubt familiar with the man & his myriad of projects & pursuits. This episode is a bloody corker as we go deep into life in Central Queensland. Andy & I both lived in the town of Rockhampton (a place renowned for its beef and serial killers), and we go all out with our experiences there.Good, bad and mostly hilarious. Car fires, murders, meth dealers, “grabby” groundskeepers, washing line bandits, sniffers of bike seats, regional racism & much more insanity that's 100% true. This is part one of a two part podcast. Episode #41 - Part One is HELLA FUN & will certainly give you a pick me up to get you through another day at the job you hate. Zac Smith-Cameron is an illustrator, designer and most recently becoming a podcaster. Working under his 'I am Zac' moniker, Zac has been creating a wide range of illustration art for the past several years. While a large portion of his work online are simple, striking piece of comic art, Zac has also lent his skills to some pieces that hit close to home for me, such as LORD's "What Tomorrow Brings" cover art and "The Andy Social" podcast logo. Both of Zac's incredible creations that I can say have become favourites not only personally but to many other people who now own many pieces of merchandise/music that are now adorn with his art. Art is one of those things that I keep talking about and never do myself. Looking at the achievements of others, I often find myself saying that I could never do what they do. Zac is no exception to this way of thinking that I hold onto, however this chat is another example of where simply 'showing up' is most of the battle. Get started, keep going, be patient and the rewards will come. Zac took this approach to the extreme in 2018 where he gave himself the challenge to draw a piece of art every day for a full year. When we spoke about this, Zac said there were often moments where he felt like he was dialling in a piece of art and other times where he almost missed a day completely but managed to get himself over the line... just. While it would be a lot of fun to take on the challenge, I think very few of us would be able to maintain the consistency to do something day in, day out for a full year. As Zac mentions in the chat, it was one of the most rewarding things he has ever done. When not creating art through design and illustration, Zac has extended his creative output with a podcast launched this year with co-host Adam Flannery called 'Cruel and Unusual Nourishment'. A show that documents the pair (and often with a special guest) exploring unusual and unsuspecting restaurants and food joints, reflecting on not only the food but the whole experience from walking in to walking out. Injected with a healthy dose of humour, you will find that most people (not exclusive to 'foodies') will be entertained as you hear the guys recap their descriptive and hilarious adventures. To get a great dose of inspiration when it comes to illustration and art, be sure to follow Zac on the socials. Show notes Follow Zac via Main Website | Instagram | Twitter | Facebook | Check out the Cruel & Unusual Nourishment Podcast via Main Website | Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Quote from Dune that Zac referenced - "Muad'Dib learned rapidly because his first training was in how to learn. And the first lesson of all was the basic trust that he could learn. It's shocking to find how many people do not believe they can learn, and how many more believe learning to be difficult. Muad'Dib knew that every experience carries its lesson."
Would you consider taking up an offer to go on a one way trip to Mars? Sounds like something straight out of a science fiction novel. Amazingly for Josh Richards who's an Astronaut Candidate for the Mars One Project, this is a reality that not only he is facing, but is running full speed at. The Mars One Project aims to establish a permanent human settlement on Mars. Initially racking up 200,000 initiated applications, over the past several years the project has slowly dwindled the candidate pool down to 100 remaining. 50 men and 50 women. Josh is one of the last 100 and is still in the race to leave planet Earth permanently. Josh is a real jack of all trades. Not only has he embraced the current identity as an Astronaut Candidate but is also a Physicist, Explosives Engineer, Soldier, Author and... a Comedian! While Josh doesn't believe any of his journey to date has been planned out, his wide range of skills have no doubt helped him stay in the race for Mars One. In 2017, Josh released his book 'Becoming Martian' which covers a whole range of topics when it comes to the mission of colonising Mars including the impacts to human body and mind. With a background in comedy and doing a number of shows around the country for several years, Josh has injected his own humour and knowledge into the book making it quite an entertaining and informative read. At the time of Josh and I catching up for a chat, Josh was in the midst of writing his next book which will talk about his own personal story and his feelings toward the decision to pursue a goal that many of us would never think to consider. During our chat Josh spoke about some of his experiences in comedy, the military and the number of stages he has had to endure to ensure he is still in the running for Mars One. Josh may very well be the first Andy Social guest to not only leave the planet but to never come back. Mind blown. Andrew Lilley is the guitarist and founding member of Sydney Melodic Death Metal band Daemon Pyre. Currently in the midst of wrapping up an album in Thailand, Andrew has been on a mission to close an important chapter of the band. If you aren't familiar with Daemon Pyre, you may very well be acquainted with one of the many bands Andrew has been a part of over the years either as a full time member or session player. The list is long but includes bands such as Infernal Method, Daysend, Psi-Kore, Mortality, Atomizer, Mortal Sin, Killrazer and many more. Andrew is viewed by many (myself included) to be one of the top guitarists in Australian metal. After years of lending his talent to a plethora of bands, Andrew is ready to further cement his legacy with the upcoming Daemon Pyre album before embarking on his next big venture, relocating to the United States. Indefinitely. I caught up with Andrew at his place in the inner west of Sydney to talk about the ups and downs of the band over the past couple of years, the focus and intention placed on the new album and why it's been important to get it finished. We chat about his one way ticket to US (another Andy Social guest fleeing the country - See episode 125 with Steven Ryan who is living it up in Peru. Check out his Instagram) and what this next period of his life may look like. I've known Andrew for years and always enjoyed his company, however this was the first time that we got to sit down and really dig deep into a lot of topics and have a great conversation. A common theme with many musician friends and kind of bitter sweet with Andrew now moving overseas, but i'm stoked to be able to use the podcast as a great excuse to catch up with a great person. Enjoy! Show notes Follow Andrew on Facebook | Instagram | Check out Daemon Pyre via Facebook | Big Cartel | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube |
Rob Brens is what I would like to call a real hot commodity. Like many of us musicians trying to find and hold onto a drummer is freaking hard, so when we discover world class drummers like Rob, many of us are fighting for a piece of the action. Rob has taken full advantage of the demand by working with a wide range of artists from different genres, crafting his skills and expertise. He is continuously building his profile in Australia and now beyond as a versatile, highly experienced weapon on the skins. Most people will know Rob as the drummer in Hadal Maw and I Built the Sky, however also has a long history with bands such as Alarum, Teramaze, King Parrot, Dreadnaught, Descrator and many more. One of the coolest things about this podcast is the opportunity that I get to spend time and surround myself with positively driven, highly motivated people. Many of those who have been on Andy Social to date are consistently challenging themselves and always wanting to improve. As you will hear in this episode, Rob's focus is not only to be a world class musician, but a world class human. In our chat we cover a wide range of topics from his career to date as a drummer, approaching session work and being able to work effectively on the hundreds of different songs (often quite complex) that he would now have under his belt. We also talk about physical and mental health, productivity, experiencing growth through adversity with his Jiu Jitsu and heaps more. Looking to get pumped up and inspired? Look no further. I think we all need a Rob Brens in our life who sets the standard that we can all strive toward. I hope you get as much from this as I did. BandTools Podcast – Band Tools for Music Marketing / Band Management / Digital Distribution
BandTools Ep 53 – Podcasts are becoming more and more popular in today’s world for learners and entertainers alike, but musicians aren’t quite capitalising on it’s potential yet. In today’s episode I chat with Andy, host of the Andy Social and Self Starter podcasts about how podcasts work, and why musicians should be getting involved. […]
Patience can pay in dividends and Doug Dalton is certainly no stranger of playing the long game to reap the rewards. Killrazer are set to shortly release their first full length album since forming in 2005. A long time coming right? With almost 15 years of loyal fans supporting the band through thick and thin, Doug is ready to throw fuel onto the fire and give these tried and tested live songs the spotlight they deserve. The upcoming new album will be a culmination of songs forged through years of touring, line up changes, personal adversity and no doubt some inspiration from Doug's earlier days in the classic Australian metal band Grungeon. As you can see, this has taken a hell of a long time and while Killrazer went through a number of twists and turns over the years, Doug has kept busy with forming his touring and merchandise company Hardline Media. Hardline Media have been bringing touring artists to Australia and New Zealand since 2009. First starting with Paul Dianno and Malevolent Creation and with this year alone already adding Venom Inc, Destruction, Sabbat, Pain and Therion to his list of successful tours. No matter what has happened over the years, Doug has continuously contributed and slugged his guts out for Australian metal fans either through his own song writing, helping bands with merchandise or bringing out some of the worlds best bands in the genre. When one project slows down, there's always another to jump onto. No rest for the wicked! Doug has been consistently requested by you, the Andy Social listeners, all as a guest for the podcast. I was excited to get the chance to talk about everything from Killrazer, playing in a metal band and the challenges of personnel changes, Hardline Media and heaps more. A great guy with great work ethic. To check out more of Killrazer, chat to Doug or head out to any of the upcoming Hardline Media tours, check out the links below. Sceptic, sceptic, sceptic. That's me. Always quick to jump to my BS meter to call out something. With this in mind I thought it might be good to challenge myself a little and speak to someone who has a very different set of beliefs to my own. Meet Peter Maxwell Slattery. An Author, Rap Artist and an Extraterrestrial Contact Experiencer. Multi-dimensional personality who not only writes books, releases his own music and speaks about his personal E.T. encounters but also runs ECETI Australia with his wife Solreta Antaria who is a Psychic and Hypnotherapist. Peter was recommended to me by an Andy Social listener. At first I was quite hesitant due to my BS metre overheating, however after a bit of reading up I was quite impressed with the amount of content and hard work Peter puts into his own brand and business (remember, I run the Self Starter podcast as well!). So guys and gals, strap yourself in for this one. We go on a wild ride and while at times I am wondering what on earth is going to come next, Peter was extremely pleasant, welcoming and soft with the approach of his views. I really enjoyed chatting with Peter and while this episode isn't necessarily aimed at pushing toward a believer or sceptic view point, I think it's good to have open conversations and listen to other people's journeys and experiences. Through other filters, we get learn more about each other as well as ourselves. I might have to challenge myself a bit more! Crossover! Swapcast! Collaborayshun!! Anyone who listens to this podcast knows who Andy is; the guy gets a mention nearly every episode. I'm sure I'm frightening him at this point.. Don't tell him I said that! On this one, we met at Cocoon Floatation a few weeks ago on a very warm Sunday morning for a float session at Cocoon Floatation. It was actually the night after the mighty-mighty Sean Sheap's 40th, wherein my son showed far more charisma at not even the age of 2, than I've managed in my entire 33 years on this planet.. But that's another story. Andy and I recorded beforehand, which can be found by clicking here, and this is straight afterwards. Cocoon is a really cool place, and you couldn't find a better Float Facilitator and purveyor of the good vibes than Megan. I implore you to check out Cocoon and The Andy Social Podcast if you're not already privy. Other than that, vote marfucka! #vote
I've mentioned Andy on the podcast numerous times before, and now he's on Pod Kembla! Ahh the magic of podcasts.. So now you're going to hear me talking about 9 million* dollars until it arrives, ALL. THE. TIME. YAWL! No, in all seriousness, I came across Andy at the beginning of the year through his podcast "The Andy Social Podcast", but that's not all he does. He's also very prominently the bassist in Australian metal band "LORD" and has toured the world with them. However, his podcast is what I've come to know him for. If you haven't already, you should definitely check it out on iTunes, YouTube or any of the other various platforms he has available to get it. He has an array of interesting guests on his show, and I always feel like I've learned something after listening. Whether it be about music, philosophy, business and a broader sense life in general. This is probably something I should be putting in an iTunes review to be honest.. Which I may just do once I get this little blurb thing finished and the episode uploaded.
