It's been a year since the Australian government unveiled its AUKUS military pact with the US and the UK that will see it acquire nuclear-powered submarines, forecast to cost up to AU$368 billion. It's a deal that poses serious threat to regional and global health and security, runs counter to our commitment to nuclear non-proliferation and brings us closer to nuclear weapons capability.  The 14th March saw the start of a week of actions against AUKUS all across the continent and the Radioactive Show travelled to Mt. Keira on Wadi Wadi Lands in Wollongong to the meeting of the Australian Nuclear Free Alliance (ANFA) a grassroots alliance that has brought together Aboriginal people and civil society groups concerned about existing or proposed nuclear developments in 'so called' Australia Since 1997.  This was the first East Coast meeting of ANFA and was initiated due to the potential for stationing of nuclear submarines at Port Kembla.Today we hear from Greens Senator David Shoebridge addressing the meeting on some of the serious threats from AUKUS.  Currently the Senate Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Legislation Committee is conducting an Inquiry into Australian Naval Nuclear Power Safety Bill 2023 [Provisions] and Australian Naval Nuclear Power Safety (Transitional Provisions) Bill 2023 that will report on April 26.  We also share recordings from the launch of the Peace Walk Against AUKUS that had a send off at the ANFA meeting on Sunday 17 March and set off from Port Kembla on Monday 18 March.  Local elder Uncle Peter Button held a smoking ceremony to begin the walk.  The walk will continue on to arrive in Canberra on 17 April and you can follow along on the social media (Beyond Uranium Canberra or via the website www.beyonduraniumcanberra.net.Finally we'll hear long time anti-nuclear activist and former Radioactive Show presenter Bilbo speaking about the Keepers of Lake Eyre anniversary that will meet up on 26 March to talk about the next steps in the protection of Arabana country and in particular the sacred mound springs.

From a standing start back in the late-1970s, young uni-dropout Dexter Dunworth, along with his older brother David, started out with 1 truck collecting used industrial oils from car and truck service centres around Sydney, cold-calling potential customers promising to get rid of their smelly oil waste. It was oil recycling long before recycling became part of our business lexicon.  From that humble beginning, the brothers scaled up to include collection, treatment plants, then recycling it as fuel to other customers in need, and over 4 decades the pair built a major oil waste recycling business throughout Australia's east coast, with customers like Shell, BHP Steel at Port Kembla and most coal-fired power stations in the Hunter Valley. Grabbing every opportunity became Worth Oil's mantra, especially when it came to the key decision whether to sell out or not.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A new $10bn submarine base will be built on Australia's east coast to support future nuclear-powered submarines.Prime Minister Scott Morrison will unveil the plans in his speech to the Lowy Institute on Monday, focusing on national security.“Establishing a second submarine base on our east coast will enhance our strategic deterrent capability,” Mr Morrison is expected to tell the institute.Three preferred sites have been chosen at Brisbane, Newcastle and Port Kembla following a defence review of 19 locations.More than $10bn has also been set aside to move from the Collins-class fleet to the future nuclear-powered submarines.Mr Morrison is expected to reveal how the new base will add capacity, rather than move it from any current or planned capacity for Fleet Base West, where the Collins-class fleet is now based, south of Perth.“Fleet Base West will remain home to our current and future submarines, given its strategic importance on the Indian Ocean,” he will say in his speech.Mr Morrison will further say the decision to establish an east coast submarine base has been many years in the making as part of Australia's transition from Collins.“However, the government has now determined that, to support our decision to acquire nuclear-powered submarines, establishing a second submarine base on our east coast will enhance our strategic deterrent capability, with significant advantages in operational, training, personnel and industrial terms,” he says in his speech.Mr Morrison said an optimal east coast base would provide homeported submarines specialised wharves, maintenance facilities, administrative and logistics support, personnel amenities and suitable accommodation for submarine crews and support staff. It would also enable the regular visiting of US and UK nuclear-powered submarines. The creation of a new submarine base will be the first time a major new base has been built since since Robertson Barracks was constructed in the Northern Territory in the 1990s, but this project will be bigger.Mr Morrison said the government has authorised the defence department to immediately begin negotiating with the NSW and Queensland governments, and relevant local governments and authorities on the “enormous undertaking”.This initial work is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.The PM said the project will bring significant positive long-term economic impacts, including from construction and having a larger defence force population and their families living nearby.“There will also be significant benefits for local and national industry in supporting the new base and the more complex and larger nuclear-powered submarine fleet,” he says.“Again, none of this detracts from what we will be doing at Fleet Base West.”- by Melissa Iaria, news.com.auSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The spreading inflationary consequences of war

Economy Watch

Kia ora,Welcome to Monday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the International edition from Interest.co.nz.Today we lead with news it is all about the spreading inflationary consequences of war.But first up, local carbon prices have been retreating recently. They ended last week down at NZ$78.50, a -10% drop in a week. In China, their fledgling carbon market now barely functions. The EU carbon price has fallen even more sharply, down -30% in a week to €66/tonne (NZ$105/tonne). The whole thing seems weird, given the record demand and prices for fossil fuels, and it calls into question whether these carbon market prices are giving useful climate signals. Given the dive in the EU price, holders of the NZUs may be facing steep losses here in coming weeks. Carbon market prices are responding to 'normal' financial market signals, and not climate or IPCC data.We have been highlighting sharp rises in many commodity prices recently, and coal hit another record high at the end of last week, as did aluminium. This seems to be a daily achievement recently and we are inured to these rises, even if we know that they are building to cause serious long-term global inflation. Worse, for many commodities, inventories are low.One to keep a special eye on is nickel, essential for stainless steel production, and EV batteries. But the world's largest producer is MMC Norilsk Nickel, a huge Russian producer accounting for 14% of global supply. They control 40% of the world's palladium supply, and 10% of platinum supply. They haven't been sanctioned yet, nor their oligarch owner. But missing from the list has been Dr Copper. Copper demand has, for the past few years, depended on Chinese infrastructure activity, and China's economy is off the boil so copper hasn't participated in the current commodity price frenzy - which has been good, because it is already expensive and used widely. But on Friday that all changed. Copper prices zoomed higher overnight to hit a new record high of US$10,820/tonne. Supply concerns rather than demand pressures are behind this jump. And China signaled much more stimulus is on the way as its economy stutters.Meanwhile, global food prices rose sharply in February, up almost +4% in one month, up +24% in a year. This represents a new all-time high, exceeding the previous top in February 2011, by 3.1 points. The February rise was led by large increases in vegetable oils (+37%) and dairy prices (+25%). Cereals (+15%) and meat prices (+15%) were also up. And of course, the global stresses in March means this is just the start of extreme food price stress. Rising post-pandemic demand in the recovering first world, stable supply everywhere, plus new growing security and supply-chain uncertainties are all conspiring to drive up food prices and food stress. In turn, these tensions will bring new 'security' arguments between nations.Black Sea shipments of wheat have reduced to a trickle on the fighting and over the weekend wheat prices have exploded. For the World Bank, the Ukraine invasion is a global economic catastrophe. And it is now no longer possible to get insurance for cargoes to or from Russia, especially those using the Black Sea.The American economy added +678,000 jobs in February (seasonally adjusted), the most in seven months and way above market forecasts of +400,000. Job growth was widespread. (The actual rise was almost +1.5 mln from the prior month, but January is always seasonally low.) Their jobless rate fell to 3.8%, lower than expected. Their participation rate rose again, marginally. Average weekly earnings rose at +5.4%, and the fastest pace since March 2021. But markets glossed over this news in the face of the security issues in Europe. Still, this labour data will likely keep the Fed on track for a rate hike in two weeks.US vehicle sales came in at just over 14 mln in February (annualised rate) and down sharply from the 15 mln rate in January. But supply issues are holding this back.Brazil's economic growth was +1.6% in Q4-2021 and while expectations were low for this data, it is far lower than the +4.0% rise in Q3-2021.There have been major policy meetings in China, but they are all overshadowed by the Russian invasion. At home they set a low growth target of "around +5.5%", but you have to say their conviction levels are low because they also noted "rising challenges". This is recognition that their economy is floundering. They need it to improve because they have tens of millions of young people joining their jobs market all with high income hopes that will be difficult to accommodate. New aggressive stimulus is probably not far away. Certainly interest rate cuts are close now. The iron ore price is on the move higher again in anticipation. But not helping is that their property meltdown isn't resolved and is at a dangerous stage again. Zhenhro and Evergrande lead a rapid rise in offshore defaults. Altogether some US$100 bln in debts needs to be repaid this year alone. Bond discounts are very deep (-85%) indicating deep pessimism of likely progress, despite Beijing taking control of some of the larger developers. Auditors are resigning (a la Trump). Bank accounts are being frozen. Workers are walking off the jobs. For Beijing 'housing' is a core policy 'mountain'. The unprecedented demographic turn means future demand for houses will shrink very sharply. At present supply, there are more than a decade's worth already in the market. That means there is no need for the Evergrande's of China anymore. Building more as part of new stimulus will make the problems worse. Now Beijing's housing problem is that those who bought face steep valuation crashes. It's not the way Beijing thought their housing policy would turn out. They are about to face some very angry buyers. In Hong Kong, retail sales are languishing. December trade was revised lower, and the January year-on-year gain was weak, and on a weak base. January 2022 sales were a massive -30% lower than in January 2019.Meanwhile EU retail sales didn't bounce back as strongly in January as was expected, a worrying under-performance given what has come after this.Russia's currency is at a new record low, weakening again very sharply at the end of last week. Until now, key Western policy makers have exempted oil from their sanctions. But the Allies are moving to include Russian oil in the blockade. That won't help the ruble.S&P cut Russia's rating to "CCC-" from "BB+", as default risk rose sharply again. Both Moody's and Fitch cut their ratings further. Explanation of ratings grade is here.In most of the world, Russia is losing the information war over Ukraine. In China, though, it's winning big. Beijing has thrown its hat in the ring on the Russian side - but with some reservations on the commercial side. They are a dubious friend for the Russians. But Russia's mistake is a golden opportunity for Beijing to make it a subservient client. It is not economic news, but we should note that Australia is ramping up its defense spending, and will buy and host nuclear submarines. One of Brisbane, Newcastle or Port Kembla will host a new AU$10 bln naval base for a new fleet of these submarines. Their existing Indian Ocean base will be upgraded. Fear of what China is about to do with Taiwan is driving their sharp turn to become nuclear-armed.The UST 10yr yield opens today at 1.74% and up +2 bps from this time Saturday. A week ago it was at 1.99% but risk aversion has taken hold since. (But recall, at the start of 2022 it was at just 1.52%.) We should also note that while New Zealand benchmark Government bond yields are flat or soft, wholesale swap rates are still rising, and key ones are back up to 2016 levels now.The price of gold starts today at US$1973 and up another +US$11/oz from this time Saturday. That is a weekly rise of +US$89/oz or +4.4%. At the start of 2022 this price was US$1814/oz, so it is up +8.8And oil prices are down a bit today and by -US$2/bbl level. In the US they are now just under US$113.50/bbl. The international price is just on US$117/bbl. A week ago the international price was US$93.50/bbl and that seemed high. At the start of the year is was under US$80/bbl. The climb since has been more than +40%.The Kiwi dollar will open today still higher at 68.6 USc and a +¾c rise from Friday. Against the Australian dollar we are at 93 AUc and firm. Against the euro we at 62.8 euro cents and almost a +1½c rise from Friday. That means our TWI-5 starts today at just on 73.6 and its highest since late November. If sustained, this will mitigate some of the imported tradables inflationary pressure. Not a lot, but some. And all this is despite the US dollar rising to near a 20 year high. The bitcoin price is lower today, down another -4.2% from this time Saturday to US$39,137. For the week it is up +3.8%; Year to date it is down -17%. Volatility over the past 24 hours has been moderate at +/- 2.0%.You can find links to the articles mentioned today in our show notes. And get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. Guillen held high-ranking positions at Tesla for more than ten years, but has now left the company, as Tesla announced in a brief notification to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)." says electrive.com: " Jerome Guillen was only appointed head of the new Tesla Heavy Trucking division in March, where he was to drive the market launch of the electric truck Semi, and was previously head of Tesla's entire automotive division. The Frenchman has long been considered one of Elon Musk's most important companions. He came to Tesla from Daimler in 2010 and was responsible for the Model S. In his ten years at Tesla, Musk repeatedly gave Guillen responsibility for the major construction sites in the company." https://www.electrive.com/2021/06/08/jerome-guillen-leaves-tesla/ TESLA'S CHINA-MADE VEHICLE SALES SURGE 29% IN MAY"Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) sold 33,463 China-made electric cars in May, including exports, a 29% jump from April, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) on Tuesday." says Reuters: "China's new electric vehicle sales surged 177% to 185,000 cars in May from a year earlier, CPCA said. Overall passenger vehicle sales, however, rose just 1.1% to 1.66 million cars. Tesla, which makes its Model 3 sedans and Model Y sport-utility vehicles in Shanghai, exported 11,527 China-made vehicles in May. In April, it sold 25,845 China-made cars, down from 35,478 in March." https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/teslas-china-made-vehicle-sales-surge-29-may-auto-association-2021-06-08/ AUSTRALIA'S LARGEST-EVER TESLA SHIPMENT"The largest-ever Australian shipment of Tesla electric cars arrived late last week in Port Kembla, NSW, according to well-informed boat tracking service VedaPrime. It's estimated the delivery comprised roughly 1500 examples of the Chinese-built Model 3 sedan, which remains the only variant from Tesla currently on offer Down Under." says caradvice.com.au: "While Tesla does not release its sales data, figures obtained by CarAdvice show the all-electric brand delivered 3430 vehicles to local customers throughout 2020. Based on those results, the most recent shipment equates to almost six-months worth of stock – more than the US-based brand has ever had to deal with in Australia" https://www.caradvice.com.au/958695/australias-largest-ever-tesla-shipment-arrives-in-port-kembla-nsw/ TESLA SEEKS TO BUILD BATTERY FACTORY NEAR BERLIN"US carmaker Tesla has expanded its application for construction permits to build more facilities in Grünheide — south of Berlin — notably a battery factory. In April, Tesla said it wanted to include a battery production facility in its permit application." according to dw.com: "Given the scope of the changes, the state of Brandenburg's ministry of agriculture, environment and climate (MLUK) must decide in the next few days "whether to involve the public again," the licensing authority said in a statement on Thursday. Following criticism from environmental groups, Tesla also wants to introduce various measures to reduce water consumption so that despite expansion of the plant, water consumption is still expected to be about 1.4 million cubic meters per year." https://www.dw.com/en/germany-tesla-seeks-to-build-battery-factory-near-berlin/a-57775358 MAXUS TO SUPPLY 750 ELECTRIC VANS TO DPD UK"DPD UK will double its fleet of electric vehicles (EVs) after ordering 750 fully electric commercial vehicles from Maxus. The parcel delivery firm has bought 500 E Deliver 9s and 250 E Deliver 3s, increasing its pure electric fleet to almost 1,500 vehicles." says CommercialFleet.org: "Maxus began taking orders for the E Deliver 3, its first compact electric van, last year.  Two battery options are available: 35kWH and 52.5kWh, giving a range of up to 98 miles and 150 miles, respectively. Meanwhile, the E Deliver 9, which replaced the EV80, has a maximum range of 219 miles and can be specified with one of three battery options. There's a choice of 55.1kWh, 72kWh and 88.5kWh." https://www.commercialfleet.org/news/van-news/2021/06/09/maxus-to-supply-750-electric-vans-to-dpd-uk ELECTRIC TRUCK START-UP LORDSTOWN DOESN'T HAVE CASH TO BEGIN PRODUCTION"Lordstown Motors, an electric vehicle start-up that aimed to revive a shuttered General Motors factory in Ohio, said on Tuesday that it did not have enough cash to start commercial production of its electric pickup truck and might have to close its doors." reports The Times: "The company, which was once held up as a savior by former President Donald J. Trump, is now being investigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission. In a regulatory filing, Lordstown said it will not be able to begin “commercial scale production” without raising more money from investors and lenders. Lordstown, one of about a dozen start-ups in the electric vehicle space that have gone public by merging with special purpose acquisition companies, or SPACs, added that there was “substantial doubt regarding our ability to continue as a going concern” — a legal phrase companies often use to alert investors that they might not survive" https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/08/business/lordstown-cash-going-concern.html E.ON AIMS TO INCREASE AFFORDABILITY WITH EV SALARY SACRIFICE SCHEME"E.ON has launched an electric vehicle (EV) salary sacrifice scheme following its company car provision going all electric in 2019. This new scheme – created by E.ON and Lex Autolease - enables non-company car drivers to access an EV, offering a range of EVs as well as an option to purchase a home chargepoint through its e-mobility business unit, E.ON Drive, as an additional salary sacrifice benefit." says Current News: "The scheme allows employees to benefit from reduced Income Tax and National Insurance contributions, with this designed to make EVs more affordable. It follows Octopus announcing earlier this year it was offering 100% electric salary sacrifice schemes through a new business unit dubbed Electric Dreams." https://www.current-news.co.uk/news/e-on-aims-to-increase-affordability-with-ev-salary-sacrifice-scheme RENAULT MEGANE E-TECH ELECTRIC"The radical Mégane eVision concept is destined for series production in 2022 as the Mégane E-Tech Electric - Renault's second mainstream EV." sreports Autocar: "The production-ready car has now been revealed in camouflaged prototype guise ahead of a full public debut later this year. The model shown is the first of 30 identically liveried test cars that will be used for advanced development trials on public roads beginning this summer.   Proportions are largely shared with Alliance partner Nissan's new Ariya SUV, with which the Mégane shares its CMF-EV platform and powertrain. Renault has confirmed that, like the concept, the Peugeot e-2008 rival has a 215bhp electric motor on its front axle and takes its power from a 60kWh underfloor battery pack good for 280 miles of range on the official WLTP test cycle." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-2022-renault-megane-e-tech-electric-280-mile-ev NISSAN SAYS OWNERS OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES TRAVEL 390 MILES MORE "Nissan claims electric car owners across Europe are already covering more miles annually than those driving petrol and diesel cars, despite continued concerns about range anxiety. The average electric vehicle user travels 391 miles (630 kilometres) more each year than those with cars with combustion engines, according to the Japanese car maker's research." according to thisismoney: " A poll of 7,000 motorists in the UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Norway, Sweden and Denmark earlier this year asked car drivers to detail how many miles they cover each year - not including 2020. When drivers of petrol and diesel cars were asked what would convince them to switch to an EV, 38 per cent said the biggest 'pull-factor' would be longer ranges. Almost a third (32 per cent) said easier charging would persuade them to make the leap, while three in 10 said they would need to see an improved availability of public devices before ditching their traditional motors." https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-9659615/Electric-car-owners-390-miles-year-petrol-diesel.html THE URBAN, LOW-SPEED EV IS HAVING A MOMENT"In China, a 10-foot-long minicar called the Wuling Hongguang Mini — made by General Motors and Chinese automakers SAIC and Guangxi Automobile — is topping 250,000 in total sales. That makes it the best-selling EV in the country, outperforming Tesla's Model 3 and others." says greenboz.com: "Young families are buying the car because at around $5,000 it's cheap, it's easy to drive, park and charge, and it's fun to personalize with a Crayola box of color options and stickers from the likes of Pokemon and Hello Kitty. The car is reportedly ubiquitous in the Chinese city of Liuzhou, which has chargers all over the place; the city offers free parking and charging to support the growing EV market. This is the last episode of the EAH podcast for 2020. It's been quite an interesting past 12 months and the EAH team has decided to close out this roller coaster year by heading "down under" to discuss the surge in investment in low- and zero-carbon hydrogen going on in Australia. Australia's hydrogen strategy is amongst the most ambitious of the national plans to develop a regional hydrogen economy in the coming decades. On today's show, the EAH team will be joined by Brendan Norman to talk about deployment of sustainable FCEV technologies across many different segments of the transport sector and utility vehicles. Brendan is the CEO of H2X, a new vehicle manufacturing company based in Sydney with a manufacturing facility in Port Kembla, will deliver its first hydrogen FCEVs to market beginning in 2022 before expanding its vehicle offerings in subsequent years. In the annals of working class history in this country, the Jobs for Women campaign has, quite rightly, gone down as the stuff of legend. Beginning in 1980, and centred around the right of women to work at the Port Kembla steelworks in Wollongong, owned and operated at the time by Australian Iron & Steel, a subsidiary of BHP, the bitter struggle would carry on throughout the entire decade of the 1980's, eventually ending in a crucial, historic victory for working class women, not only in the steel industry, but throughout the country. Robynne Murphy is an activist, filmmaker, and retired steelworker. She was central to organising the Jobs for Women campaign, and is the director of Women of Steel, a documentary film chronicling this important struggle, one from which younger activists can learn a great deal.

Football United vs Soccer City

Welcome everybody to episode 45 of the Football United vs Soccer City podcast. I would like to sincerely thank all the interviewees, listeners and the soccer public of the Illawarra, Australia and the World who download this podcast. Additionally I would like to say thank you to the people who contribute, comment and reminisce on the social media pages. If you have any photos, programmes or newspaper articles then please message me directly on Facebook or Instagram or Twitter so we can display them to the public.Matthew Bailey started playing junior soccer with Russell Vale Junior Soccer Club in the mid to late 1980s from U7s through to U10s. Matt’s proficiency on the field saw him selected in the under 11s Illawarra representative team. After a couple of seasons here, Matt moved onto the junior Wollongong Wolves representative teams from U13s through to U16s, where the support of his family was immense, his footballing talent evolved and lifelong friendships were formed. He then joined the NSL youth team with the Wollongong Wolves for 3 years in the latter part of his teenage years. The team was always strong and Matt thoroughly enjoyed his time with the Wolves, in particular the football opportunities it afforded him. After the Wolves, Matt then entered the Illawarra Premier League with the Phil Carr coached Northern United in 1999, it was a great year as they won the league and Matt was playing at a club where his Dad was involved and where he played amongst mates. In the next few seasons Matt played with Kemblawarra, Western Suburbs, Port Kembla and Cringila Lions. At these clubs Matt played under great coaches in Fleming, Gaffney, Alston and Glover and he significantly contributed on the field with quality team mates. Additionally Matt was awarded Illawarra Premier League player of the year in 2002, won the League and Grand Final double with Port Kembla and played regular finals football. In 2005 he joined Bulli Football Club under Alan Mangles. It was here where he spent 3 very good years and in the latter 2 seasons he was coached again by Adrian Alston. In 2007 Matt’s stellar season was rewarded with a second player of the year award (now named the George Naylor medal). In 2008 Matt pushed himself personally by joining the Wollongong Wolves in the NPL under John Turner. This year was important for many reasons and it was fascinating to hear Matt describe this season. After off-field decisions in 2009 re-shaped the Wolves, Matt re-joined Bulli FC for a season. He performed well that year and enjoyed the club, but the desire to perform at the NPL level meant that Matt joined Robbie Stanton’s Sutherland in 2010. At Sutherland Matt immensely enjoyed his football, Robbie, the playing group and the Club/facilities. Team accolades followed but this stint for Matt meant more than just the trophies, it was pushing himself, the delight of thorough preparation during the week and enjoying time with the family on game days.Next Matt went back to Bulli FC and enjoyed a great couple of years at the Club under Ben Smith in 2012 and 2013. The next year Matt again re-joined the Wolves to give back to the club that had given him so much. A huge highlight in this year was the FFA Cup tie versus Central Coast, to hear the personal pride Matt exudes in captaining the club and sharing this moment with so many in the Illawarra was a high point for me.After retiring from playing, Matt had 5 fantastic years at Bulli FC, firstly as a youth grade coach and then as a first grade coach. What he has achieved is amazing and speaks volumes of his abilities as a coach and aligning himself around great people. The conversation around breaking Bulli’s first grade grand final hoodoo was beautiful to hear. From my perspective the interview spoke to me about Matt’s perpetual determination to push his playing and coaching talents as far as he could, the friendships he has developed over time and the amazing support of his wife, parents and his children. Publicly I would like to thank Matt for interrupting his Sunday afternoon so I could interview him about his journey. I hope you take pleasure in this interview as much as I enjoyed recording it.

WHEN you have a dream stuck in your head, you'll sacrifice whatever it takes to achieve it. This is non more applicable than to Callala product Blake Horton, who has just returned to the Shoalhaven following four years of playing football professionally in Europe. After starting to play at the age of just four, because he wanted to emulate his older brother, Horton quickly fell in love with the game and developed a natural talent as a goalkeeper. Since then, after stops at Culburra, Bomaderry, Southern Branch, Port Kembla and Rockdale City, the former Nowra Christian School student chased his football dream overseas - which led to him playing at FC Chabab in the Hoofdklasse, SC Telstar in the Jupiler League and finally OFC Oostzaan in East Amsterdam Derde Divisie. While abroad, largely based in the Netherlands, Horton would travel five hours a day just to train, in a country where English wasn't the first language. But despite all this, as well as numerous injury concerns, Horton wouldn't have changed his experience overseas at all - which has led to him now playing for Coniston in the Illawarra. Hear all about his amazing journey below, in his in-depth chat with Courtney Ward.

The Illawarra has been a hub for musicians and creatives of all kinds. In more recent years however a number of closures of live music spaces have stiffened those wishing to perform and express themselves creatively. This gap opened up a need for a new venue that could not only provide another spot for musicians but for artists of all types. With the recent gentrification shift of Port Kembla, previously neglected pieces of property have been snapped up to create new opportunities and take advantage of the property boost in the area. One of these was a long closed and neglected service station. With the downsizing of venues and the boost of new property opportunities you could say that the planets had aligned.Servo Food Truck Bar is the collaboration of 12 dedicated individuals in the Illawarra’s creative space. Together they were able to bring their unique skills to the table and make a safe social and performance space for people of all ages and all identities.I caught up with part owner Peter Langstaff, a long standing identity in local music as a singer/songwriter and known for his time as a radio host at Vox FM Illawarra. Peter and I spoke about the birth of the idea, the steps that progressed from an initial observation to a concept put into action, some early challenges at launch and the successes they have had to date.Servo Food Truck Bar is another demonstration of what the people of the Illawarra are capable of. The area has nurtured many great artists and will no doubt continue to do so.What did you get out of this episode? Here’s what I learnt;1. Know what your customers want, because you are one. – Being live music lovers, Peter and the other owners already knew what they wanted in a live venue from their own personal experiences. They trusted their instincts and expectations to build the concept which they believe the wider community will also enjoy. Remember that we are all customers and often we are creating a business because we feel passionately about what we are selling, so remember to place yourself in the customer's shoes and to think about what you would want and what would excite you as a customer. Sounds simple, but you'll be amazed at how many people lose that perspective.2. One person's trash is another person's treasure – Think about that rundown building or land that's being left unused. Is your idea what a property owner is looking for? Of course there are many assessments you will have to make before taking on a lease and there are always risks involved (you should always ask yourself the question - why is no one else using this space), however there could simply be many overlooked opportunities that are within easy grasp which could include a very reasonable agreement between you and the owner.3. Lean on your expertise. Contribute in your own way. – Peters experience came into play at launch of the Servo Food Truck Bar. His gig and administration experience ensured that the standard was set when everything was in full operation. Don't get clouded in the areas that you have no expertise or capacity in. You can't be great at or be available for everything. Focus on your strengths and outsource/bring in others who can help in the areas that you may not be able to contribute to at your expected standard.4. Can't do it alone? Collaborate with others! – While this might be an extreme example, Peter is one of 12 partners who are involved with the Servo Food Truck Bar. By sharing the concept, the goal and dream becomes more attainable rather than it being just a ‘wouldn’t that be nice’ thought that progresses no further. Could you bring in another like minded or multiple like minded people to lend unique skills and effort to build on and accelerate a business idea that you’re passionate about.Follow Servo Food Truck Bar via Facebook | Twitter |Location – 6-8 Wentworth St, Port Kembla NSW 2505

Anne-Louise runs the Vault Cabaret, which is held at the Vault on Wentworth Street here in mighty-mighty Port Kembla, and has done the last 13 years. I reached out to Anne-Louise a little while ago because I came across an article about how she was starting up walking tours in Port Kembla. This area has a rich history throughout it's boom times as well as it's not so boom times, up until now where it seems there is a resurgence which has been happening for a few years now. In the walking tours, titled "Where Lies Beauty", this history is explored through examining the area, the architecture and the community through their stories. The first tour was held in April to a very favourable reception. The next is scheduled for the 18th of this month of June, and then again on Saturday the 23rd of July. To keep up with the happenings follow Where Lies Beauty on Twitter and Facebook and drop them a line to get more information. Also, keep an eye out for the Vault Cabaret by checking in with the Merrigong Theatre Co. A gigantic thank-you to Anne-Louise for taking time out of her day to have a chat, on that day in particular, as it was the afternoon of the most recent Vault Cabaret. YAWL!  No, in all seriousness, I came across Andy at the beginning of the year through his podcast "The Andy Social Podcast", but that's not all he does. He's also very prominently the bassist in Australian metal band "LORD" and has toured the world with them. However, his podcast is what I've come to know him for. If you haven't already, you should definitely check it out on iTunes, YouTube or any of the other various platforms he has available to get it. He has an array of interesting guests on his show, and I always feel like I've learned something after listening. Whether it be about music, philosophy, business and a broader sense life in general. This is probably something I should be putting in an iTunes review to be honest.. Which I may just do once I get this little blurb thing finished and the episode uploaded.
