Send us a textHave you ever felt guilty after eating a food you enjoy? That familiar wave of shame that follows the last bite of pizza, ice cream, or chocolate? You're not alone. As a registered dietitian, I've seen this pattern play out with over 90% of my clients, and it's time we break this cycle.Food isn't meant to carry moral weight. When we categorize foods as "good" or "bad," we create an unhealthy relationship that leads to restriction, binging, and shame. This episode dives deep into why these labels develop—from diet culture influence to childhood food rules—and the harmful impacts they have on our mental and physical wellbeing. We explore how seemingly innocent comments about "cleaning your plate" or avoiding "junk food" can create lasting food trauma that affects eating behaviors well into adulthood. The path to food freedom starts with neutrality. Rather than judging our choices, we can approach eating with curiosity and mindfulness. Why do we want certain foods? How do they make us feel? Are we truly listening to our hunger and satiety cues? By reframing our language around food, focusing on what we can add to meals rather than restrict, and treating ourselves with the same compassion we offer others, we can heal our relationship with eating. For parents, this shift becomes even more crucial as children absorb our attitudes about food and our bodies like little sponges. Let's build a healthier foundation for ourselves and the next generation by breaking free from harmful food labels once and for all.Ready to transform your relationship with food? Listen to discover practical strategies for embracing food neutrality and creating a peaceful approach to eating that supports your wellbeing without unnecessary guilt or shame. The language we use around food reveals a troubling cultural obsession. Have you ever caught yourself saying "I was good because I didn't eat that cupcake" or "I was bad this weekend because I had pizza"? This powerful episode peels back the layers of how we've assigned moral value not just to food, but to ourselves based on what we eat.We dive headfirst into the origins of the "clean eating" movement, tracing its evolution from the early 2010s when documentaries, fitness influencers, and tribal diet communities began reshaping how we think about nutrition. Rather than promoting actual health, many of these approaches began selling identities – ways to belong – rather than sustainable nutrition principles. The consequences can be severe. Extreme restriction often leads to binge-eating cycles, social isolation when meals become stressors instead of connectors, and an unhealthy relationship with food that affects mental wellbeing. Through personal stories, including experiences with competitive bodybuilding, we reveal how even "healthy" approaches can backfire dramatically. But there's a better way forward. Discover the practical power of the 80/20 approach, why adding protein might be more effective than eliminating food groups, and how to develop boundaries rather than restrictions around eating. We explore why a flexible structure focused on consistency trumps short-term perfection every time.Whether you've struggled with food guilt, avoided social events because of dietary restrictions, or simply want a healthier relationship with eating, this episode provides the perspective and practical tools to break free from food morality and build sustainable nutrition habits that nourish both body and mind.

Is your kid's behavior caused by what they eat—or how you parent? In this episode of Raising Heights, we tackle the hot debate on toxins, discipline, and modern parenting struggles. This week, Zach and Tori dive into the challenges of adulting and parenting, from a frustrating washing machine breakdown to a disastrous family photo shoot. They discuss the growing trend of eliminating potentially harmful foods and household products to improve kids' behavior—does it really work, or is parenting the bigger factor? They also explore how social media pressures parents, compare today's parenting styles to past generations, and reflect on the impact of processed foods. Learn more about your ad choices. Can changing your diet transform your mental health? In this episode, I explore the profound connection between nutrition and emotional well-being through the inspiring journey of health advocate and author Josh Noland. Overcoming depression and physical inactivity, Noland reclaimed his life by embracing mindful eating, meditation and strength training. By making small, sustainable changes — like swapping processed snacks for whole fruits and prioritizing protein intake — he significantly improved both his mental and physical health. His story underscores the foundational role of mental health in overall wellness, influencing our motivation to make healthier choices and maintain beneficial habits. Simple practices such as walking after meals not only stabilize blood sugar but also enhance mood, demonstrating how accessible actions can lead to substantial benefits. During our conversation, we also talk about the importance of home cooking for controlling ingredient quality and supporting optimal health, contrasting it with the pitfalls of processed foods and restaurant meals laden with unhealthy fats and additives. With his upcoming cookbook, Noland aims to make nutritious eating both accessible and enjoyable. His journey serves as a compelling reminder that taking ownership of your health doesn't have to begin with drastic overhauls — it can start with manageable steps that lead to lasting change. In this episode, a Delta Airlines flight leaving Detroit for Amsterdam is looking to make an emergency landing. For an odd reason. The pilot of flight 136reported to the tower at JFK that onboard meals were spoiled, resulting in some passengers becoming ill. The pilot requests to land in New York to have the food issues remedied and get several passengers medical assistance. Not a great look for Delta during a very busy travel time. In this show, the boys tackle a couple of subjects...Firstly, they discuss whether grown-up adult kids should get involved with their parents if they perceive a gold-digger has come along. Should they stay out of it, because their parents can "choose" whomever they wish to be with? Or should they interfere with the risk of inheritance being put in jeopardy?Secondly, they discuss whether the food we eat is either making us sick or even potentially killing us!But what are your thoughts on any of these subjects? The boys are back with another absolutely mildly tempered episode. Your uncle takes a taste of this podcast and says "Hmm that's not too bad." Do you label your foods “good” or “bad?”Honestly most of us do to some degree or another. And if you don't, you've surely heard your Aunt Nancy saying she couldn't possibly eat a cookie because she had already been so “bad” today having eaten a donut earlier. Or perhaps you've said “I've been good because I had a salad–I deserve that treat”Any time you label your food, you inadvertently label yourself–and this is just not true. You are neither good nor bad for eating certain foods. Welcome to another episode of Embrace Your Real podcast! In today's episode, we'll be diving into a common struggle many people face: food guilt. We'll explore four ways that can help you overcome food guilt and develop a healthier relationship with food. Whether you're someone who frequently experiences guilt after indulging in certain foods or someone who wants to improve their overall mindset towards eating, this episode has got you covered. What I discuss: If you find yourself feeling guilty after overindulging in food, the first step is to practice self-compassion. Reframe your perspective around food by breaking from from the “Good and Bad Food” mentality and adapt of more “food neutral” mentality. Learn how to properly fuel your body! Embrace the 80/20 Rule.
