Welcome back metal heads to a new episode of The Great Metal Debate podcast. Today will be looking at the third full-length studio release from the Tuscan, Arizona based thrash metal band known as Atrophy. The album Asylum has been long awaited by fans. Thanks to a side link on YouTube, the first song I heard was titled "High Anxiety" and it honestly blew me away with the same type of grooviness as Mezzrow. Not quite what you would call melodic thrash metal, but definitely had its standout riffs which ultimately made me want to review this. After finding out that it's another three decade long hiatus type of band, I thought, there's no way in hell I'm not reviewing this. Allow me to state that there are absolutely no skipable tracks on this album and "Punishment For All" is a punishing opening track to the album. I mean that in the way that it's every bit as badass as the album cover. When you see the giant skeleton like jester towering over the old abandoned asylum a with a graveyard out front, you know you can expect the headbang inducing thrash riffs. When you begin head banging, you'll suddenly want to shotgun a tall beer and dive straight into a mosh pit. Lets jump on over to the song "Seeds of Sorrow". The drums on this record sound amazing but the band didn't have a drummer who is in the band during the recording last year. Instead they had a personal friend of theirs by the name of Jonas Schultz who was hired for the recording gig. Either way, Jonas did an incredible job. On March 22nd, Atrophy announced the winner of their drumming auditions. So congratulations to Mr. Alex Bosson for winning your rightful place in the band. Mark Coglan and Nathan Montalvo continue to deliver those tasty guitar riffs which can be further analyzed in the entire runtime but for now we'll focus on them being the reason "Distortion" is among one of my favorites. Thrash metal has never been one of my go-to genres but I have a huge respect for it. As I've mentioned before in a previous review, I have my favorites, but I can always appreciate them taking traditional heavy metal and then making it 100x heavier. Most thrash metal doesn't even rely on as many blast beats as other bands because the main focus comes from the riffs. The song "American Dream" features Kragen Lum who is the guitarist of Heathen. "Close My Eyes" is a track that begins with a bit of a rock ballad that doesn't overstay its welcome. In fact, it reminds me of something you would've heard on the Allison Hell album by Annihilator but with a slight mimic of Milli's voice from Kreator. Despite its slow start, it quickly kicks into gear for yet another thrash metal banger. When I looked up the bass player for this record, I was happy to learn that it was none other than Josh Gibbs. He has previously worked with notable bands like Solstice and Malevolent Creation as well as many others. He showcases his talent on every song but in particular he's one of the reasons why a song like "The Apostle" is such a ripper. "Five Minutes 'Til Suicide" is an epic closing track which is the longest song on the album, surpassing the length of "Close My Eyes" by only 4 seconds. So how do I feel about a thrash metal record that is just under 2 weeks shy of 34 years apart from their previous record? I'd say its a whole hell of a lot better than a lot of bands who wait over a decade to finally drop new music. This is an outstanding thrash metal release for 2024 and I'm going to rate Asylum by Atrophy a solid 7.5/10.

Frankenbok have been a mainstay on the Australian metal scene for 25 years now. From the outset Frankenbok were a band who went well and truly against the grain - or, for that matter, against EVERY musical convention put in place up to that point - ensuring they never quite fit in with the cool kids or current trends. Not that they would have it any other way.Since bursting onto the scene with Greetings And Salutations in 1999, Frankenbok have very much been a band for the underdog. Musically, socially and geographically.Their refusal to bow down and conform to musical hierarchy has seen them become more of an underground institution despite supporting heavyweights such as Slayer and System Of A Down. They have always done things their way and in their own time, along the way gathering a loyal army of supporters who have stayed with them through thick and thin. This weekend, to fully celebrate their quarter of a century in Australian metal, Frankenbok will host a party unlike any ever seen in this country. On Saturday, December 10, every major incarnation of Frankenbok - totalling five in all - will assemble to play songs from their part of Frankenbok history in one night at The Tote in Melbourne. It is an ambitious and brave venture that has already proved a success, with friendships mended, past ailments buried, and music the overall winner, despite not one live note being played in anger.Yet.It is a night made possible by the collective efforts of every past and present member of Frankenbok, with guitarist Aaron 'Azza' Butler the only member to have played in every line-up.Azza sat down with HEAVY for a frank and open discussion about the life of Frankenbok in a must listen for every fan of the band, or lover of music in general. We start with the very early days of Frankenbok, when Azza returned from the US in 1997 with a renewed musical vision."I basically moved over to Florida chasing the death metal dream," he began, "and I was lucky enough to land in the right circles where I was hearing people talking about Morbid Angel -which were my heroes at the time - and talking about them unlike we talk about them, as in blokes. One guy was talking about Pete Sandoval, the drummer from those days and he said "yeah, he still owes me fifty bucks" and I was blown away because these guys were heroes of mine. So I was very lucky to be taken in by the inner circle of all these people that were - before I moved over to America - they only existed in CD's and posters on my wall and next thing you know I'm having breakfast with some of these people and getting to know them personally. It's kind of a strange thing when once you get to know someone more personally you start to forget who they were to you once upon a time. You have to remind yourself. You start to get comfortable and give them a bit of shit (laughs) and then you go wait a minute... I was lucky enough to get taken in to the inner circle where I learnt a lot from all these guys in bands like Malevolent Creation and the Morbid Angel dudes and another band over there called Pain God, but these are all serious hard hitters in the death metal scene. All of these guys had done time with the big bands, and I got to know these dudes really well and I would often see them in between shows when they came down to Tampa Bay and they would be staying the night and rather than drink the night away and get fucked up one guy would say to the other guitarist 'let's do that thing' and they had all these side projects. Just with eight track recording gear and while they were in town they would work on these things with a drum machine and some primitive recording gear, and at the time I started playing in a band called Shrill, and they were a punk band, which I really enjoyed but I really, really wanted to play death metal stuff. Then I realised that if I got myself a drum machine and a basic four track the Hell with waiting around to find the right musicians, I could just start writing music straight away and not have to wait to find somebody who is a competent musician and part athlete to be able to play some of the drumming I wanted to do. So I did a couple of demos like that, which is what evolved into Frankenbok eventually."In the full interview, Azza goes through the early days in more detail, the formation of Frankenbok, their early sound and where it came from, the sonic leap between Greetings And Salutations and the EP Loopholes And Greatest Excuses, their cover of Don't Call Me Baby, playing that song live with Ladybeard in Japan, Hutchy's involvement with Frankenbok, the decision to go with Adam B Metal when Hutchy left, Dan McDougall's addition as frontman and what he brought to the band, the inherent sense of family within Frankenbok, Dan White taking over as frontman, the decision to bring McDougall back, Frankenbok's legacy and more.

El álbum incluía tres canciones escritas por el ex guitarrista Robb Flynn ("Chalice Of Blood", "Forbidden Evil" y "As Good As Dead").

He’s a sick guitarist and songwriter as well as producing, tour manager as well as master of a host of other behind-the-scenes action. Jarrett was plugged into the early 90’s Florida death metal scene with the seminal band Eulogy which featured members that would go on to be in Monstrosity, Malevolent Creation, Cannibal Corpse and Brutality. He continues creating killer death metal with his band Pulchra Morte.Intro: “Black Ritual” – Pulchra Morte, from Divina Autem Et AnilesOutro: “When Legends Die” - Pulchra Morte, from Divina Autem Et Aniles See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Patience can pay in dividends and Doug Dalton is certainly no stranger of playing the long game to reap the rewards. Killrazer are set to shortly release their first full length album since forming in 2005. A long time coming right? With almost 15 years of loyal fans supporting the band through thick and thin, Doug is ready to throw fuel onto the fire and give these tried and tested live songs the spotlight they deserve. The upcoming new album will be a culmination of songs forged through years of touring, line up changes, personal adversity and no doubt some inspiration from Doug's earlier days in the classic Australian metal band Grungeon. As you can see, this has taken a hell of a long time and while Killrazer went through a number of twists and turns over the years, Doug has kept busy with forming his touring and merchandise company Hardline Media. Hardline Media have been bringing touring artists to Australia and New Zealand since 2009. First starting with Paul Dianno and Malevolent Creation and with this year alone already adding Venom Inc, Destruction, Sabbat, Pain and Therion to his list of successful tours. No matter what has happened over the years, Doug has continuously contributed and slugged his guts out for Australian metal fans either through his own song writing, helping bands with merchandise or bringing out some of the worlds best bands in the genre. When one project slows down, there's always another to jump onto. No rest for the wicked! Doug has been consistently requested by you, the Andy Social listeners, all as a guest for the podcast. I was excited to get the chance to talk about everything from Killrazer, playing in a metal band and the challenges of personnel changes, Hardline Media and heaps more. A great guy with great work ethic. To check out more of Killrazer, chat to Doug or head out to any of the upcoming Hardline Media tours, check out the links below.
