It is with heavy hearts that we deliver this week's episode honoring the passing of a guitar hero giant who also happened to be an awesome singer and songwriter: John Sykes. He was a guitarist deserving of the title guitar god who rarely got mentioned in the same circles as the Satches, Vais, Rhodes, and Van Halens. Most known for his brief stint in Thin Lizzy at the end of their career and as a brief member of Whitesnake. He should have been a household for playing on the Whitesnake 87 album that sold 25M records worldwide, but he was fired before it came out. Kevin's a huge fan of Blue Murder, so we will focus on that band and some of the lesser-known projects he was involved in while also paying homage to his mainstream successes. New to InObscuria? The Fudge had no precedent. The band was totally unique. No rock group, up until that point, had ever so lugubriously s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d out well-known pop tunes like the Beatles “Eleanor Rigby” and “Ticket To Ride,” Curtis Mayfield‘s “People Get Ready,” Sonny & Cher‘s “Bang Bang” Rod Argent‘s “She‘s Not There” and, most famously, The Supremes‘ Motown classic “You Keep Me Hangin‘ On” to such hippie heights. With Mark Stein‘s mysterioso wash of Grand Guignol keyboard theatrics, Tim Bogert‘s amazing and trippy bass runs, and guitarist Vince Martell‘s era-happy soloing, Appice boomed like no other drummer in rock history. Their debut album still stands today as a Hard Rock classic. Vanilla Fudge went on to tour with Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and even had Led Zeppelin as an opening act.Post-Fudge, Bogert and Appice formed Cactus (seen as an influence on King‘s X and Van Halen). Post-Cactus, the rhythm section found Grammy-winning Guitar Hero Jeff Beck to form the first supergroup: Beck, Bogert & Appice (BBA).One of the premier showmen in rock, Appice became known worldwide for his astonishing live performances, in addition to becoming a highly sought-after session drummer, recording with countless artists throughout his career. April 1989: The world was a strange mix of excess and transition. On one side, the neon-drenched MTV era was still riding high, with hair metal bands like Poison, Motley Crüe, and Def Leppard dominating the charts with their polished, radio-friendly anthems. Power ballads and arena rock were inescapable, and rock fans were tuned in to Bon Jovi and Guns N' Roses. Yet, beneath the surface, change was brewing. Bands like Jane's Addiction and Soundgarden were slowly carving out a new, grittier sound that would soon transform the entire landscape.Amid this backdrop, Blue Murder made their entrance—not as another Sunset Strip glam act, but as a hard-hitting supergroup led by a guitar hero who had already proven himself with Thin Lizzy and Whitesnake. John Sykes wasn't looking to jump on the hair metal bandwagon. Instead, with Blue Murder, he aimed to bring the technical brilliance of the '70s into the late '80s, blending his bluesy, virtuoso guitar work with heavy grooves and intricate song structures. Sykes, along with legendary drummer Carmine Appice and fretless bass wizard Tony Franklin, formed a trio that drew on the legacy of hard rock and metal titans, delivering something deeper and more ambitious than most of their glam metal contemporaries.Yet, for all their talent, Blue Murder wasn't about writing catchy three-minute radio singles. Their self-titled debut album was a blend of towering guitar riffs, thunderous drums, and epic song structures that leaned closer to the ‘70s hard rock tradition of Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple than the bubblegum metal that filled the charts. But in 1989, as hair metal ruled the airwaves and grunge was lurking around the corner, Blue Murder stood out—ambitious, raw, and musically masterful. The Road to Blue MurderJohn Sykes had already proven his chops with Whitesnake's 1987 album, a monster hit that spawned chart-topping singles and dominated MTV. But creative tensions with Whitesnake's leader, David Coverdale, led to Sykes' unceremonious departure just as the band was at the peak of its commercial success. Undeterred, Sykes began writing material for what would eventually become Blue Murder, determined to put together a powerhouse group that could rival his previous success. At first, Sykes wasn't planning to be the frontman. The band initially brought in some big-name vocalists to handle lead duties. Ray Gillen of Black Sabbath and Badlands fame was the first to join the lineup, contributing vocals to some early demos. But Gillen left after just a few months, reportedly due to creative differences. The next contender was Tony Martin, another former Black Sabbath singer, but he, too, didn't stick around for long. After several auditions and some disagreements with the label Geffen Records, the A&R team suggested that Sykes himself take over lead vocals. Despite being known more for his guitar work, Sykes stepped up, and his voice turned out to be a perfect match for the band's sound—gritty, soulful, and powerful. With legendary drummer Carmine Appice, who had played with the likes of Jeff Beck and Vanilla Fudge, and fretless bass virtuoso Tony Franklin, fresh off his stint with The Firm alongside Jimmy Page and Paul Rodgers, Blue Murder had a lineup that was nothing short of rock royalty. The result was a self-titled debut that combined technical brilliance with bluesy hard rock, reflecting Sykes' desire to channel the spirit of '70s heavyweights like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, rather than chasing the more formulaic sound of the late-'80s hair metal scene.Building the Sound: A Guitarist as a FrontmanFor a guy who wasn't originally a vocalist, Sykes delivered some serious vocal prowess on Blue Murder. He was filling big shoes, considering he had just played alongside David Coverdale, one of rock's great frontmen. And while the album isn't a complete departure from Whitesnake's bluesy, hard-hitting rock, it's more expansive, both musically and lyrically. The standout track, “Valley of the Kings,” showcases the epic grandeur Blue Murder was going for. Co-written by Black Sabbath's Tony Martin, the song combines powerful riffs, intricate solos, and a historical theme that was rare in the pop-metal scene of the time. This track had a “late '80s Sabbath” feel, blending hard rock with doom-like weight, something that set the band apart from the typical hair metal crowd.Tracks like “Jelly Roll” and “Out of Love” demonstrate the band's diversity—moving between blues-infused swagger and heartfelt ballads, all carried by Sykes' smooth yet powerful vocals and, of course, his signature guitar tone. The hosts also discussed how “Out of Love,” a lesser-known power ballad, was one of those hidden gems deserving far more attention than it ever received. The Legacy of Blue MurderThough the album charted respectably (peaking at #69 on the Billboard 200), it didn't make the impact that Whitesnake's 1987 album did. Part of the issue was the changing musical landscape. By 1989, the glam metal scene was beginning to saturate, and the introspective rawness of grunge was on the horizon. Blue Murder, with its complex musicianship and Sykes' ambitious songwriting, may have been too sophisticated for an audience that was more accustomed to quick-hit rock anthems. But for those in the know, Blue Murder became a cult classic. Its combination of blistering guitar work, thunderous drums, and intricate bass lines made it a musician's album—a performance record. For fans of technical prowess and intricate song structures, Blue Murder was a band worth rediscovering. What Could Have BeenDespite the talent and the potential, Blue Murder never achieved the commercial success many expected. Tensions with their label, Geffen Records, didn't help. Sykes believed Geffen was trying to sabotage the band in hopes he'd rejoin Whitesnake. Whether or not that's true, it's clear that Blue Murder didn't get the marketing push it deserved. After a follow-up album in 1993 (Nothing But Trouble), Blue Murder faded into the background, overshadowed by the grunge explosion. However, Sykes continued to be a respected figure in the hard rock and metal scenes, even though he never reached the heights of Whitesnake's success again.A Call to Revisit a Lost MasterpieceSo why does Blue Murder still resonate with those who know it? It's a record that transcends the pop-metal limitations of its time. If you're a fan of Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake, or just killer guitar work, this album is well worth revisiting. And for those who missed it the first time around, now's the perfect time to dive into one of the best-kept secrets of late '80s metal.Take a listen, let it transport you back to 1989, and then wonder how this gem flew under the radar.Songs in this Episode* Intro - Blue Murder * 22:17 - Black-Hearted Woman * 27:14 - Out of Love * 31:53 - Ptolemy * 37:59 - Billy * 39:04 - It's Too Late (demo w/ Ray Gillen on lead vocals) * Outro - Valley of the KingsMake Your Voice Heard! In our quest to explore the depths of 90s Rock, we rely on you, our listeners. Carmine Appice is one of the few drum legends we have left. What's interesting to me about his career is that his name is usually bigger than the bands he's in whether it's Vanilla Fudge, Cactus, Beck, Bogart, Appice, King Kobra, Blue Murder or his side work with Rod Stewart and Ozzy. These days he's turning his attention to Cactus, who recently released a new album called Temple of Blues where they redo a bunch of the classic Cactus songs and invite their friends along. Buddies like Dee Snider, Ted Nugent, Joe Bonamassa, Dug Pinnick, and tons more feature prominently on this all-star disc. We also discuss each of these Other projects as well as a few more. Russ Ballard gave me chills every night on Rock Meets Classic when I heard him sing “You Can Do Magic”. It has have to be his version, no one else's version of song. “ Paul Shortino's response when asked “what is your favourite song of all time?”

On the 56th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, author James Campion, review the 1977 legendary album by Rod Stewart, "Foot Loose & Fancy Free." "Foot Loose & Fancy Free" was Rod Stewart's eighth studio album. It continued Rod's 70's solo artist success. Rod's legendary vocals were in prime condition and he had tremendous band behind him. He had three guitarists, Gary Grainger, Jim Cregan and Billy Peek. His bassist was renowned session player Phil Chen. The keyboard player was Jon Barlow Jarvis and on the drums was the legendary Carmine Appice. This band could match up with any other band in the 1970's. The album featured three huge hits that have been in rotation on rock radio since the album was released, including "Hot Legs," "You're In My Heart (The Final Acclaim)" and "I Was Only Joking." Those three songs even had videos which were starting to become fashionable. The album also includes typical Rod Stewart ballads, some funk, some psychedelic rock, prog rock and more. The album made it to Number 2 on the US Billboard charts and has now gone 3X platinum. The album was produced by legendary Tom Dowd and was considered the last of his rocking 70's albums. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Zeus' pick. So tune in to the documentary type of breakdown of the "Hot Legs" video and to see if the guys man crush on Rod is stronger than theirs on Michael Hutchence of INXS! Drummer Carmine Appice (who is also a founding member of Vanilla Fudge and who has performed and/or recorded with Rod Stewart, Jeff Beck, Ozzy, and Pink Floyd, amongst others), Cactus is as heavy, bluesy, and uncompromising in its musical assault as they were 50-plus years ago.The band released its new album, Temple of Blues – Influences & Friends, June 7 on Cleopatra Records.  The album merges the current members of Cactus with a big-name, star laden, ensemble of guest artists, all of whom have called the group among their biggest influences.  Featured along with the current Cactus band is a who's who of blues and rock icons: Guitarists Joe Bonamassa, Ted Nugent, Pat Travers,  Warren Hayes, Vernon Reid, Steve Stevens, Johnny A (The Yardbirds), Ty Tabor (King's X) and bassists  Billy Sheehan (Mr. Big), Dug Pinnick (King's X)  Tony Franklin (The Firm, Blue Murder), Phil Soussan (Ozzy Osbourne, Billy Idol), Rudy Sarzo (Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne), Kenny Aaronson (ex- Joan Jet and The Yardbirds), as well as members of  Government Mule, Vixen, Rainbow, Zebra, and Whitesnake.  Vocalist Dee Snider of Twisted Sister appears on the band's remake of the Howlin' Wolf classic “Evil,” and Appice's bandmate in Vanilla Fudge Mark Stein turns in a powerful vocal on Little Richard's “Long Tall Sally.” A second version of “Guiltless Glider,” appears as a bonus track with former Judas Priest vocalist, Ripper Owens. In addition to Appice on drums and vocals on all tracks, original Cactus guitarist Jim McCarty also appears on Temple of Blues.  The new album contains reimagined versions of some of Cactus's most legendary songs with the current band and guests putting a new spin on these bad-ass tunes that are among the heaviest of heavy blues-rock ever recorded. “The music of Cactus has always been steeped in the blues tradition,” says Appice, who wanted the group to re-visit its best songs within a modern rock approach to traditional blues. “We kept hearing from so many of our music celebrity friends how much Cactus influenced them and how they would love to be a guest on a Cactus album. Any band named Cactus has got to be raw and heavy.  And that's just what these boys have been and are since the band's formation in 1970. Referred to when they first formed as the “American Led Zeppelin,” the band's reputation as supreme masters of relentless hard rock still precedes them and is well deserved. Cactus was formed in 1970 from the ashes of Vanilla Fudge when Appice and former Vanilla Fudge bassist Tim Bogert's plans to form a band with Jeff Beck were canceled when Beck had a nasty automobile accident that sidelined him for a lengthy period-of-time. The original lineup featured Appice, Bogert, former Mitch Ryder guitarist Jim McCarty and singer Rusty Day from Ted Nugent's Amboy Dukes. This lineup released three classic albums - Cactus (1970), One Way... or Another (1971), and Restrictions (1971) – all of which charted in the Billboard Top 200 and that still hold up well today.  Carmine's playing has also been a huge influence on drummers including Joey Kramer (Aerosmith), Neal Peart (Rush), Phil Collins (Genesis), Brian Taylor (Queen), John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) and countless others.  He was inducted into the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2014. His best-selling drum instruction book The Realistic Rock Drum Method was first published in 1972 and has since been revised and republished as The Ultimate Realistic Rock Drum Method. Carmine also published his best-selling memoir, Stick It!: My Life of Sex, Drums & Rock 'n' Roll, in 2016. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Rock Icon Carmine Appice drops by to chat about Vanilla Fudge history and their local tour dates in the NorthEast in May! Carmine was in various bands after Vanilla Fudge, including Cactus, Beck, Bogart and Appice, Rod Stewart, King Cobra, Blue Murder and even toured with Ozzy Osbourne! Vanilla Fudge was one of the first American groups to infuse psychedelia into a heavy rock sound to create “psychedelic symphonic rock” an eclectic genre which would, among its many offshoots, eventually morph into heavy metal. Although, at first, the band did not record original material, they were best known for their dramatic heavy, slowed-down arrangements of contemporary pop songs which they developed into works of epic proportion. Originally, Vanilla Fudge was a blue-eyed soul cover band called The Pigeons, formed in  1965 with organist, Mark Stein, bassist, Tim Bogert and drummer, Joey Brennan, and guitarist, vocalist and US Navy veteran, Vince Martell. They built a following by gigging extensively up and down the East Coast, and earned extra money by providing freelance in-concert backing for hit-record girl groups. In early 1966, the group recorded a set of eight demos that were released several years later as “While the World Was Eating Vanilla Fudge.”In 1968, Vanilla Fudge headlined the Fillmore West with Steve Miller. The group then performed “You Keep Me Hangin' On” on The Ed Sullivan Show, and released their second album, “The Beat Goes On.” Despite its avant-garde conceptualization and execution, the LP was a hit and climbed into the Top Twenty. That summer, Atco reissued “You Keep Me Hangin' On,” and the second time around it climbed into the Top Ten. It was followed by Renaissance, one of Vanilla Fudge's best albums, which also hit the Top Twenty. The band had three albums in the Top One Hundred, two of which were in the Top Twenty and one in the Top Five Single. The band toured with Jimi Hendrix, played dates equal billed or headlined with groups such as Cream, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, among many others; late in the year, they toured with the fledgling Led Zeppelin as their opening act.For more  on Vanilla Fudge click on the linkhttps://vanillafudge.com

As Ozzy Osbourne's 3rd solo album Bark at the Moon turns 40, we look back on what was a very pivotal time in the life of Ozzy and his wife/manager Sharon. After the tragic death of Randy Rhoads, they soldiered on with Brad Gillis (Night Ranger) and bought some time with the live Speak of the Devil album. But Ozzy needed not only a new gunslinger to replace Rhoads virtuosity, he also needed a new writing partner. Enter Jake E. Lee from Mickey Ratt (which would evolve into Ratt) who could write songs and deliver blistering solos. And MTV was eagerly awaiting the first videos from the former Black Sabbath madman. On the home front, Ozzy is battling substance abuse, Sharon is at odds with her father/super-manager Don Arden, their is infidelity and while they have legal problems and bad press, they start having kids. Plus the band seems to always be in flux as Rudy Sarzo (Quiet Riot) has left to be replaced by Bob Daisley who had written and recorded on the first two Ozzy solo albums. And while Tommy Aldridge plays on the album, Carmine Appice appears in the Bark at the Moon video. While some of the songs like the title track and Rock N Roll Rebel would be hailed as classic Ozzy, the 2nd UK single So Tired is an interesting choice for a heavy metal singer but the video is classic MTV and classic Ozzy. Released November 15, 1983 in the US and December 2, 1983 in the UK, we celebrate its 40th by going track x track, video x video and offstage drama from this triple platinum seller.
