POPULARITY
In this message from Ephesians 4:1–6, Pastor Jim calls the church to walk in a manner worthy of the calling we have received. After three chapters of celebrating our new identity in Christ as one family, Jim shows that unity is not something we manufacture but something the Spirit has already created and we are called to preserve. With humility, gentleness, patience, and a commitment to bear with one another in love, we reflect the oneness of one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father of all. Jim challenges the cultural currents of division, outrage, and self-advancement that shape us throughout the week and invites us to root our identity fully in Christ instead. Because Jesus humbled himself, gave up his seat at the table, and welcomed us into God's household, we are now empowered to extend that same grace to one another. The church becomes a living masterpiece when we eagerly work to preserve our God-given unity, displaying the wisdom of God to a watching world.
The Body of Christ (The Church) is made up of many different types of people. They all come from different perspectives and generally, all are at different maturity levels. Paul address those who are strong in their faith to have patience and understanding with the weaker believers. There are responsibilities from both groups. Please read this weekend Romans 15:1-13
Bearing with one another is a struggle, but in the authentic Christian spirit we are called to do so. When we endure these sufferings of the shortcomings of others, which is part of accepting the cross, is part of uniting ourselves to Christ. We are so inclined to criticize others, regardless of our station of life. What we too often lose sight of is how much giving in to criticizing others and harboring discontent is how these poison our very souls. We quickly see the failures in others while ignoring our own.
In a story that should be filled with action and heroism, Exodus 17:8-16 instead focuses on the miraculous power of God and the resiliency of friendship. It is a beautiful reminder that while God's plans do not always lead to ease or comfort, we are never alone.

I stopped behind a car at a red light the other day and noticed a bright sticker on the rear window boldly stating: “New Driver. Please Be Patient.” Given all the road rage we hear about (or experience), what a great reminder to be patient with other drivers. As I looked at the sticker, I wondered what would happen if people carried around signs that alerted us that they’re a “New Parent” or “New Christian.” If we knew what our neighbors or coworkers or others we encounter throughout our day were going through, would we be more patient and even help them deal with their struggles? We may be rushing through our days trying to avoid being interrupted by others, but let’s consider how Jesus treated people. He wasn’t in a hurry. He had compassion on people and took the time to comfort and teach and show love to those He encountered. As believers in Jesus, we’re called to “live a life worthy of the calling [we] have received” (Ephesians 4:1). The apostle Paul says that includes being “completely humble and gentle; [being] patient, bearing with one another in love” (v. 2) and making every effort to live in peace and unity with each other (v. 3). We may not know what challenges people are facing, but we can be patient with them. Let’s be an expression of Jesus’ love to everyone we encounter on our daily path.

As a church, we are the body of Jesus. When people see us individually or collectively, they should see Jesus. We should be able to say to people, if you want to see Jesus, look at us. We are His body. Often though, we do not look like Him but instead look like the rest of the world in our values, behaviors, and attitudes. As the church, we are called by God to oneness; that is one Body of Jesus. To make oneness possible, we must be humble, gentle, and patient with one another. We all need each other. We can't grow up alone. We can only become the fullness of Christ together with God's help. It's not always easy, or pretty if we're honest. But we are growing up into something glorious, something eternal, something more like Jesus. Sermon Notes: https://www.bible.com/events/4895963922.10.02
