I had the pleasure on speaking with my friend, Bob Marovich. I met Bob about ten years ago on a Vee Jay Records site. Bob is the expert on Vee Jay – The Gospel Years. So, this is Bob !!! He has been a writer since he was old enough to spell, is a grantwriter, fundraising professional, and serves as the editor of the GlobeTrade monthly "Borderbuster" e-newsletter. Bob launched JGM on the tenth anniversary of its predecessor website, The Black Gospel Blog, which he founded July 28, 2004, as the first blog to cover African American gospel music. Bob is a gospel music historian, author, and radio host. Since 2001, he has produced “Gospel Memories.” The show features classic gospel, spiritual, and jubilee music, and interviews with gospel legends. It airs Saturday mornings on Chicago's WLUW-FM and throughout the week on several Internet and low-power FM radio stations throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe. Bob has been interviewed about gospel for television, radio, and newspapers, and was featured on a BBC Radio 2 documentary on the life of Sister Rosetta Tharpe. He is also the gospel editor for ChicagoMusic.org. Bob's work has been published in the Encyclopedia of American Gospel Music (Routledge 2005), Encyclopedia of African American Music (Greenwood Publishing 2010), and in the ARSC Journal of the Association of Recorded Sound Collections. He has presented and participated in panel discussions on gospel music at the Gospel Music Workshop of America, National and Independent Gospel Music Association Industry Summit, Blues and the Spirit Conference at Dominican University (River Forest, Illinois), the American Library Association, and the Association of Recorded Sound Collections annual convention. Formerly second vice president of the Chicago Area Gospel Announcers Guild (Gospel Music Workshop of America), Bob is on the board of the Chicago Gospel Music Heritage Museum, the Rhythm of Gospel Awards, Blackburn College, and Tree House Humane Society. He is a member of the Stellar Awards Gospel Music Academy, the National Independent Gospel Music Association, the Recording Academy, the Center for Black Music Research, and the Association of Recorded Sound Collections. Bob's collection of historic gospel recordings exceeds 5,000 vinyl discs that contain more than 19,000 individual tracks, and thousands of gospel CDs. His collection of gospel music memorabilia includes sheet music, song folios, photographs, signatures, anniversary programs, tickets, posters, and other promotional material. Bob holds a bachelor's degree in American Studies from the University of Notre Dame and an MBA from the Lake Forest Graduate School of Management. His first book, Shout Troubles Over: The Birth of Gospel Music in Chicago, published in March 2015 by the University of Illinois Press as part of its Music in American Life Series. Bob lives in Chicago with his wife, author Laurel Delaney, and their two cats. Bob's wife, Laurel, has a podcast for women entrepreneurs. Bob gives the podcast name towards the end of our podcast. I will be listening to it! Look at God” Darrell Luster featuring the Legends of Quartet 4 Winds Records / Malaco Music Group (release date: February 2020) www.malaco.com By Bob Marovich Bob Marovich is a gospel music historian, author, and radio host. Founder of Journal of Gospel Music blog (formally The Black Gospel Blog) and producer of the Gospel Memories Radio Show. What if Spencer Taylor Jr. of the Highway QCs, Rev. Thomas Spann of the Brooklyn All Stars, Willie Rogers of the Soul Stirrers, JoJo Wallace and Horace Thompson of the Sensational Nightingales, and Cleave Graham of the Pilgrim Jubilees got together to sing? Further, what if they told the story of how hard the gospel highway was in the golden era? That's what you get on “Look at God,” a new composition by Darrell Luster who introduces the song. The gentlemen recall tough times traveling through the Jim Crow South, where they couldn't stay in hotels or eat in restaurants. They sold “millions of records” and “didn't make a dime.” They had “plenty to complain about back then,” notes Spann, but “look at God.” It's a heartwarming ode to the resilience of the human spirit. Check out the video, which features cameo appearances by longtime Malaco engineer Wolf Stevenson, president Tommy Couch Jr., and multi-instrumentalist Ray Braswell Jr.
Bob Marovich knows gospel music. He's written a major work about its history and Chicago roots. He hosts a weekly gospel radio program. And he's the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Gospel Music. His latest work is a coffee table book called The Gospel According To Malco: Celebrating 75 Years of Gospel Music. It's a companion piece to an 8-disc set that includes 100 tracks. In it, he outlines the recorded output of the Malaco label, and all the other record labels now under the Malco umbrella, including the legendary Savoy. Bob sits down with Jenn White and traces the changes to gospel music over the decades, and the special place it holds in American culture.
In the 1960s, an unknown artist named Harvey supplied his bright, almost otherworldly perspective to about 200 gospel album covers (175 or so for the fabled Savoy Records) before disappearing into obscurity. Five-plus decades later, Robbie Rogers is devoting his master's thesis to Harvey's illustrations — and feverishly collecting Harvey albums in the process. Special thanks to Bob Marovich at the Journal of Gospel Music for his invaluable help in making this episode possible. Gospel music historian, Bob Marovich is no stranger to the gospel circuit. He has been a big supporter of the genre and can be seen at many of Chicago's gospel programs. Bob has many articles, liner notes, and reviews to his name but his largest body of work is his book entitled A City Called Heaven: Chicago and The Birth of Gospel Music. Bob has a podcast, TV Show and a blog all devoted to music.

Hailing from Columbus, Georgia, Prodigy blends contemporary harmonies with traditional lead vocals, though their one-title name suggests they prefer association with the contemporary quartet movement. As such, they are akin to groups such as Houston's Endurance and the Wardlaw Brothers who are faithful to the quartet lyric but bring the music forward. Howcee Productions Gospel at Ourstage Artist Nevertheless, Prodigy's up-tempo and joyous “Jesus Took Care of Me,” from Never Let Go, has already been great. More about this powerful gospel group @ The Black Gospel Blog by Bob Marovich. The almost equally delightful “Singing Praises,” and “I Got Jesus,” with its “Holy Ghost power” vamp an evocation of the Victory Travelers, also move at warp speed.
