In this special three-part series, we move beyond the acute management of cardiac arrest and into the far less frequently discussed phase of survival: what comes after return of spontaneous circulation. While clinical focus often centres on early defibrillation, high-quality CPR, and post-resuscitation care, these episodes explore a different but equally important question: what does recovery actually look like for patients and families once they leave the resuscitation bay?Across three conversations, we hear from survivors whose cardiac arrests occurred in dramatically different contexts, yet whose recovery journeys share striking common themes: uncertainty, identity change, psychological impact, and the long shadow of a life-threatening event. We also explore the role of bystanders, pre-hospital clinicians, and system-level coordination in shaping not only survival, but long-term outcomes. In Part 1, Paul Swindell reflects on his sudden cardiac arrest in 2014, the immediate pre-hospital response, and the complex recovery that followed. Paul discusses the physical rehabilitation process alongside the less visible psychological challenges, including adjustment to a new baseline of health and the development of advocacy work through Sudden Cardiac Arrest UK.https://podcasts.apple.com/ee/podcast/surviving-cardiac-arrest-part-1-paul-swindell-and/id1441215901?i=1000680776156In Part 2, Zoe Hitchcock shares her experience of a cardiac arrest in central London caused by underlying cardiomyopathy, resulting in ventricular fibrillation. Zoe walks through the events leading up to her collapse on Oxford Street, the coordinated pre-hospital response, including HEMS involvement, and her transfer to St Mary's Hospital. She reflects on the long-term emotional impact, shifts in perspective, and the way her understanding of family, health, and resilience has evolved since the event.https://podcasts.apple.com/de/podcast/surviving-cardiac-arrest-part-2-zoe-hitchcocks-story/id1441215901?i=1000681711888In Part 3, Noah Baron Cohen, joined by his father Erran Baron Cohen, recounts a sudden collapse during exercise at school in North London in 2016. The episode reconstructs the timeline from initial collapse through resuscitation, emergency response, and subsequent hospital care. Erran provides a parallel perspective as a parent navigating the immediate crisis and the prolonged rehabilitation journey that followed. Together, they explore recovery, family impact, and the enduring psychological and emotional consequences of sudden cardiac arrest.https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/surviving-cardiac-arrest-with-noah-and-erran/id1441215901?i=1000567431898Taken together, these episodes reinforce a central principle of resuscitation medicine: survival is a system outcome. Yet beyond the system lies the individual experience, complex, non-linear, and often underrepresented in clinical discourse. This series aims to bridge that gap by bringing survivor voices into the foreground of the cardiac arrest narrative.

Ann Swindell's world of Leathersby stole a piece of my heart and now... it's back to grab some more with another book in the series. EEEP! Listen in for what's happening in Love in the Castle Library and our discussion on how writing helps authors in their faith. note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. I think my favorite part of our conversation is how we talked about how we meet Jesus in our writing of characters and understand Him better. Additionally, about gifts and how God uses them in our lives--and how it's "BOTH" in things not just for the blessing of others but also it blesses us in the process. Love in the Castle Library by Ann Swindell Predictability and efficiency have marked Delphine DuVert's orderly life as Castle Stewardess in the small European country of Lethersby—until she is tasked by the monarchy to hire a British researcher. Lethersby needs help solving the 100-year-old mystery of their Lost Queen, a young royal who disappeared into the night during World War I. Delphine's split-second decision to hire Jack Worthington, a doctoral student at the University of Oxford, has long-lasting consequences when he steps in to protect her from an angry colleague determined to ruin her life. The only catch? That protection looks like Jack posing as her beau. Jack Worthington believes that his instinct to protect Delphine was the right one, but he's determined to stay focused on his research for Lethersby—and keep his emotional distance after reeling from a broken heart. Yet as the clues to discovering the Lost Queen's story unravel and the Delphine's future hangs in the balance, both Jack and Delphine must step out in faith, choosing to trust that what God has ahead for them is worth any risk. Who doesn't love a good Christmas story? And who doesn't love celebrating someone's first novel? In this episode of Book Talk with Cara, we get to do both. Ann Swindell is my guest and we're talking about her brand-new novel Christmas in the Castle Library. This novel allowed Ann to explore novel writing after years of study and working with non-fiction including a devotional and spiritual memoir. As a student of writing, Ann considered what her favorite elements were and incorporated them into the novel: a historical mystery set inside a contemporary novel with royals in a created country. She wanted the story to be real enough to be believable yet whimsical enough to be fun. The result is this novel. Ann doesn't know when she wasn't a writer because she always had journals as a child. Writing for her is an opportunity to commune with God and feel alive in the gifts she's been given. It's hard work, but she loves the editorial and collaborative process. I know you're going to enjoy this novel that welcomes you into Christmas. Connect with Ann Swindell Facebook | Pinterest | Instagram
For many, Christmas is a time of year that sparks joy. For others, it is a reminder of what has been lost. In moments of hardship, especially near the holidays, it can be easy to find ways to escape reality. Escaping reality can be seen as something “harmless”, but it's actually damaging to our hearts. In this episode, Krystal and guest Ann Swindell discuss escapism during the holidays, specifically how we should avoid it, and how the gospel can give us the peace we are looking for. I've discovered a ridiculous love for castles that probably originated when author Cathe Swanson lived in one and I visited. But Ann Swindell has ramped it up a huge notch with her fictional kingdom of Lethersby, a historical secret, and of course, Christmas! Listen in and see why I can't wait for more from her! note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. Look, one book about castles and fictitious kingdoms, and hundred-year-old mysteries is pretty awesome, but learning it's the first in a series? EEEP! I can't wait. I had a blast talking through Anne's creation of the kingdom, her characters, and what readers will find in upcoming books. Christmas in the Castle Library by Ann Swindell Ellie Sawyer has always felt more comfortable with books than people, which explains why she's a PhD history student neck deep in research and trying to complete her doctoral dissertation in time to graduate. But the final books she needs are half a world away in the tiny European kingdom of Lethersby, and the only time she can access the secretive Royal Castle Library is during the Christmas holiday. Ellie is determined to get to the bottom of the mystery that has eluded Lethersby scholars for more than 100 hundred years by figuring out what happened to their long-lost queen, a young royal who disappeared shortly after the outbreak of the First World War. With the help of Mark, a handsome castle staff member who shares her love of history, she might be able to unravel the queen's story. But Mark is keeping his own secret from her, and what they discover together could change everything for Ellie—and the entire kingdom. Narrators Natalie Beran and Jackson Bliss portray queer Russian-Maori siblings Greta and Valdin in this wise, hilarious novel about a loving and chaotic New Zealand family. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Emily Connelly discuss Rebecca K. Reilly's novel, now released in the U.S. Beran depicts Greta, a 20-something PhD student in a perky, wry tone that is dripping with millennial angst. Bliss narrates Valdin's sections with a mix of earnestness and detachment. A year after being dumped by his boyfriend, he's just (maybe) starting to get his life back on track. The narrators' varied New Zealand accents and ease with snappy dialogue make every moment of this joyful audiobook a pleasure. Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. If you've ever thought, "I'm too broken for Jesus to love," then this is the episode for you! Because not only is that NOT true, but the Bible makes it so clear that, though we live in a fallen, sin-filled world, the power of God is still at work in His people. We do not have to be slaves to sin or addiction or diagnoses. Instead, we can faithfully (if falteringly) choose the hope and strength of Jesus each day. Does it mean our problems will disappear? Often, no. But neither does it mean that we find our identity in our struggles rather than in the truth that Christ has overcome them already. In this episode, I talk frankly with my friend, Ann Swindell, about our shared struggle with the OCD hair-pulling disorder Trichotillomania. We discuss victory in Christ even while we remain unhealed of this particular affliction. Just like Paul, we ask for this particular thorn in our flesh to be removed but acknowledge that, "if not, He is still good" and "His power is made perfect in our weakness." Be encouraged, friends. God is not surprised by your struggles. And He is more than faithful and capable to give you purpose and joy, even in the midst of your fight with whatever particular trouble you find yourself beset. Are you in a place of waiting? Do you feel like there is seemingly no end in sight? In this episode, author and speaker Ann Swindell joins us to discuss what it looks like to wait and trust in Jesus. Ann shares about her own season of waiting and how it has led her back to the truth of God's Word time and time again.
