Erin Hartman from the AICPA & CIMA PCPS section introduces a special compilation of conversations on the evolution of accounting firms and the modernization of accounting practices through the "Transforming Your Business Model" initiative. It contains valuable insights and motivation for accounting professionals looking to innovate and create sustainable business models while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. In these condensed exerpts from previous podcasts, the conversation features insights from Chet Buchman, managing partner of Swindell, Jansen Hawk and Loyd, and Sandy Johns, a small firm owner based in Atlanta. Chet shares his firm's journey towards reducing work hours to 45 hours per week, highlighting the challenges and successes along the way. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining a balance between reducing hours, increasing profitability, and having more fun at work. Sandy discusses her firm's transition to a fully remote team and their focus on subscription-based client accounting services, sharing her experience of eliminating one-off tax returns to reduce stress and improve work-life balance. Both practitioners highlight the importance of understanding what you want for yourself and your firm, committing to a common vision, and being willing to make changes and learn from mistakes. They also stress the value of networking and seeking support from peers and professional groups. I've discovered a ridiculous love for castles that probably originated when author Cathe Swanson lived in one and I visited. But Ann Swindell has ramped it up a huge notch with her fictional kingdom of Lethersby, a historical secret, and of course, Christmas! Listen in and see why I can't wait for more from her! note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. Look, one book about castles and fictitious kingdoms, and hundred-year-old mysteries is pretty awesome, but learning it's the first in a series? EEEP! I can't wait. I had a blast talking through Anne's creation of the kingdom, her characters, and what readers will find in upcoming books. Christmas in the Castle Library by Ann Swindell Ellie Sawyer has always felt more comfortable with books than people, which explains why she's a PhD history student neck deep in research and trying to complete her doctoral dissertation in time to graduate. But the final books she needs are half a world away in the tiny European kingdom of Lethersby, and the only time she can access the secretive Royal Castle Library is during the Christmas holiday. Ellie is determined to get to the bottom of the mystery that has eluded Lethersby scholars for more than 100 hundred years by figuring out what happened to their long-lost queen, a young royal who disappeared shortly after the outbreak of the First World War. With the help of Mark, a handsome castle staff member who shares her love of history, she might be able to unravel the queen's story. But Mark is keeping his own secret from her, and what they discover together could change everything for Ellie—and the entire kingdom. Charles Swindell, the CEO of Glycotest, a EMV Capital portfolio company, talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the company's progress in liver disease diagnostics, specifically its new partnership with the University of Georgia's Complex Carbohydrate Research Center (CCRC). Swindell highlighted Glycotest's focus on detecting early-stage liver cancer using their HCC Panel blood test, which aims to address current limitations in liver cancer diagnostics that often miss early-stage cases. "Our flagship test is the HCC Panel for curable early-stage liver cancer," Swindell noted, explaining how the test could detect cases missed by standard tests. Swindell emphasised the partnership with the University of Georgia CCRC as essential for finalising the commercial platform, which will use the expertise of CCRC in carbohydrate-derived biomarkers for liver disease. With 3.1 million potential test candidates in the US alone and an additional 380 million globally, the market opportunity is vast. "We believe that we are well differentiated from competitors," he added, pointing to the unique biomarkers Glycotest employs. Narrators Natalie Beran and Jackson Bliss portray queer Russian-Maori siblings Greta and Valdin in this wise, hilarious novel about a loving and chaotic New Zealand family. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Emily Connelly discuss Rebecca K. Reilly's novel, now released in the U.S. Beran depicts Greta, a 20-something PhD student in a perky, wry tone that is dripping with millennial angst. Bliss narrates Valdin's sections with a mix of earnestness and detachment. A year after being dumped by his boyfriend, he's just (maybe) starting to get his life back on track. The narrators' varied New Zealand accents and ease with snappy dialogue make every moment of this joyful audiobook a pleasure. Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. If you've ever thought, "I'm too broken for Jesus to love," then this is the episode for you! Because not only is that NOT true, but the Bible makes it so clear that, though we live in a fallen, sin-filled world, the power of God is still at work in His people. We do not have to be slaves to sin or addiction or diagnoses. Instead, we can faithfully (if falteringly) choose the hope and strength of Jesus each day. Does it mean our problems will disappear? Often, no. But neither does it mean that we find our identity in our struggles rather than in the truth that Christ has overcome them already. In this episode, I talk frankly with my friend, Ann Swindell, about our shared struggle with the OCD hair-pulling disorder Trichotillomania. We discuss victory in Christ even while we remain unhealed of this particular affliction. Just like Paul, we ask for this particular thorn in our flesh to be removed but acknowledge that, "if not, He is still good" and "His power is made perfect in our weakness." Be encouraged, friends. God is not surprised by your struggles. And He is more than faithful and capable to give you purpose and joy, even in the midst of your fight with whatever particular trouble you find yourself beset. Criticism is inevitable in the life of a ministry wife, but learning to respond to it well takes patience, practice, and peace from the Lord. Author and teacher Ann Swindell joins me today to share how reframing her views of criticism and immersing herself in God's Word allows her to navigate criticism with grace and love. SHOW NOTES Your job is not to fulfill what other people want. Your job is to fulfill what God wants. Criticism always offers us an opportunity to grow, whether the remarks are valid or not. The Word provides peace to carry us through the emotions that arise with criticism and righteous conviction. QUOTES “It’s hard to let people down. Behind my back, people could be saying, ‘Ann seems inaccessible or isn’t doing what I think a pastor’s wife should do.' But my job isn’t to fulfill other people’s aims for my life. My job is to follow and walk with Christ in the season I'm in, trusting He will give me grace to do what I'm called to do.” -Ann Swindell “Criticism always offers us an opportunity to grow, and I want to grow in Jesus. I want to be a woman who is tendered to the Holy Spirit, who is humble, who is responsive. Two main ways I see it is either the criticism itself is valid, and there’s something in my character that needs to grow, or their criticism isn’t valid, and I have a chance to grow in how I love a difficult person.” -Ann Swindell “If I can get past my own defensiveness and to the heart of the person in front of me, God wants to heal them just as much as He wants to heal me. Usually I think criticism stems from a place of pain and, whether that pain is warranted or not, it can be very real for that person. We have an opportunity to shepherd and love them in that moment.” -Ann Swindell LINKS FROM THE SHOW The Path to Peace Head over to www.ministrywivespodcast.com to check out the great content already on the site!
