It's the U-S of Leeds Baby after Weston McKennie has joined fellow Americans, Tyler Adams, Brendan Aaronson at Elland Road. A loan with an option to buy in the summer from Juventus means Leeds has bolstered a midfield that needed fine-tuning. Before Weston, Tyler and Brendan Leeds used to have three other American internationals that had made an impact for the club on and off the field. We look back on the time of former whites, Eddie Lewis, Mike Grella and Robbie Rogers. As always, we would love your support and feedback. Pride Month is a great time to recharge our batteries and lift one another up. Despite the recent tragedies and legislative challenges, our community is stronger and bolder than ever. As we celebrate the first anniversary of Life Out Loud with LZ Granderson, we want to highlight some queer content the LGBTQ+ community can look forward to together. Summer is the season for long nights out with friends, live music and summer blockbusters. That's why we wanted to talk two filmmakers. First, LZ sits down with Andrew Ahn, the director of Fire Island, about making queer rom-coms for the big screen. Then LZ chats with former pro-soccer star turned TV and film producer Robbie Rogers. He's working on the upcoming period drama My Policeman, which stars Harry Styles as a closeted police officer caught in a love triangle. Joyful representation can show people who are struggling with their identity that a life out loud is worth living. Party safely, love greatly! Learn more about your ad choices. What's it like to be the person in charge of a football club - and not just any club, but one with the history of Leeds United? It's a position very few people have held - but David Haigh is one of them. During his time as a managing director at Elland Road, he championed initiatives to promote diversity and inclusion - which is something he continues to do in his current role with the FA in Cornwall, and as a key player with the local side in Penzance. There's also another side to David, who is a prominent lawyer and human rights activist who was imprisoned in a UAE jail for 22 months - and he'll tell his own story of that time in a way that some of you may find uncomfortable to listen to. However, given the current situation in Brunei, it seemed strange not to get into that side of David's life. Also on the agenda: the so-called 'gay day' at Leeds United; his friendship with Robbie Rogers; and how football fans can help make the game more ethical. WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? He's a columnist, a podcaster - and one of the very few male footballers who came out as gay while still actively playing the game. In fact, Adam McCabe still runs out for the Georgia Revolution in the National Premier Soccer League in the United States and is one of the most articulate, eloquent guests we've had on yet on what it's like to be closeted in sport - and his own coming out story. Also on the agenda; how straight, cis-gendered players can be allies to LGBT team-mates; how Robbie Rogers inspired him; his childhood love for Steven Gerrard; and making the switch to asking the questions, rather than answering them! In the 1960s, an unknown artist named Harvey supplied his bright, almost otherworldly perspective to about 200 gospel album covers (175 or so for the fabled Savoy Records) before disappearing into obscurity. Five-plus decades later, Robbie Rogers is devoting his master's thesis to Harvey's illustrations — and feverishly collecting Harvey albums in the process. Special thanks to Bob Marovich at the Journal of Gospel Music for his invaluable help in making this episode possible. Harvey Albums • Black Gospel Music Restoration Project (Baylor University) • Margo Lee Williams' essay on Harvey • Opening theme: "Keepers" by Still Flyin' • Closing theme: "Slow Draw/Feeling In My Heart" by Eric Frisch • Additional music by Chris Zabriskie • www.forkeepspodcast.com
Imagine starting your own LGBT+ supporters group, and then using THAT as a way to help combat isolation in older people. Pretty incredible, right - but that's exactly what Piero Zizzi has done with Proud Baggies, and why we're so delighted to have him on the podcast. We talk about why he stayed in the closet around football for a long time; how Robbie Rogers inspired him to come out; and about the Proud Baggies' new 1968 Club. Plus, as a bonus this week, we'll take a look back into the archives of the show (when it was called 'The Other Side') - and hear from Joanie Evans, as she discusses her role as the Co-President of the Federation of Gay Games and how she got into football. This week's episode is with the man behind one of my favourite podcasts, 'Making Gay History' - Mr Eric Marcus. What an honour! Eric has recorded decades worth of interviews with LGBTQ heroes and civil rights activists. Some of them extremely well known - Ellen DeGeneres, Larry Kramer, Vito Russo and Marsha P. Johnson for example - and others that should and will become better known due to the type of documentation Eric has put together. We chat about his work as an author, working with Robbie Rogers and Greg Louganis. We discuss his book 'Is it A Choice?' which helps to answer myriad questions that often pop up regarding homosexuality. This is one of my favourite conversations and sincerely hope you enjoy this as much as I did. Finally Connor previews the MLS Cup Final between Toronto FC and Seattle Sounders and the NCAA final four in Philadelphia.
Listen, laugh, and learn this week with Tim and John as they address company boycotts based on celebrity, procrastination, gender neutral public announcements, and the lady things of Jimmy Choo. Robbie Rogers retires and Walmart gets dinged on the HRC Corporate Equality Index for 2018. In Shop Talk, the 8-hour work day is explored and while necessary in some professions, it is outdated for creative types. As John said, "I never came up with a great ad campaign sitting behind a desk!" By focusing on putting in the hours at work, rather than putting in the quality of work, we run the risk stifling creativity and imagination. We're all business. CoG Studios, CA - The LA Galaxy lost on the road to Orlando City in a game they were mostly outplayed in. But did the loss bring to the surface some bigger issues? Or is this all about wins and losses and how you look at things? Your hosts, CoG's Josh Guesman and LA Times Soccer Reporter, Kevin Baxter, give you 90-minutes of Galaxy talk that centers around the loss and the start of the season. They'll give you their quick thoughts on the game and the major issues that keep popping up after four losses in six game. Are the Galaxy learning anything from these games? Curt Onalfo keeps saying that they have to learn from these losses. And Jermaine Jones says the team needs to talk it out and get on the same page. But is there a rift growing between these two key figures? Does a field outburst show that Jones and Onalfo aren't getting along? And is everyone doing there job? Josh and Kevin will discuss what they see from the most recent comments and actions from all the Galaxy players and what that could mean for the team. Here's just a hint: it's not black and white. There is a lot left to interpretation. Then your hosts talk about Robbie Rogers and what could be coming for the Galaxy. Is the "Season Ending Injury" list the right way to handle this situation? Does this give everyone the time and money they need move on from a very unfortunate situation? And with news today that Kevin Hartman has joined the Galaxy as Director of the Girls Academy, Josh wants to know what the end game is here? It's great to put money into a program, but is there more than just an academy? Are the Galaxy getting ready to snipe an NWSL team from LAFC? Finally, Josh and Kevin answer a ton of your questions. They cover Giovani dos Santos, Jones, João Pedro and a host of other key elements to this team. Want to know who to blame? They've got you covered. It's a great show packed with wall to wall Galaxy talk. Thanks for listening! Music Provided by Back Pocket Memory

CoG Studios, CA - The LA Galaxy are coming off a 2-0 win over the Montreal Impact. And while they have momentarily removed the monkey from their backs, they still have a lot of questions to answer. In order to ask some of those questions, and then immediately answer them, your hosts, Josh Guesman and Kevin Baxter are talking 60-minutes of Galaxy talk in hopes of bringing just a little more clarity on the team's current situation. Josh and Kevin will update you on the status of Robbie Rogers and Dan Kennedy. Could both of these contracts come down to retirement? There are certainly enough rumors around Rogers' camp to make you believe that he might not be able to come back to the field. Next, the guys will look at the Clement Diop and Brian Rowe and what Curt Onalfo has said with the way he's announcing the lineup. Who should get the start against Orlando? And what philosophy is Onalfo getting at by starting Diop after a poor performance in Vancouver? The same can be said for João Pedro. Is he good enough for MLS? And should the Galaxy continue to give him minutes? Are five games enough to know what the team can expect from him? One guy who's been making lots of splashes is Romain Alessandrini. The Frenchman has been a star for the Galaxy in their last three games. But is he living up to the hype? Was there hype? Was there buzz? And what does that mean for the Galaxy in terms of players they should be attracting? Finally, the guys get to answering all your questions as they talk about the good play from the rest of the squad. There are hypothetical questions that get ridiculous answers and there are some really good though provoking questions that also get ridiculous answers. Thanks for joining us. Our 30-minute show continues to hit 60-minutes and we're glad you could join us. Music Provided by Back Pocket Memory.

When Nico Hines of The Daily Beast issued a statement earlier this week about outing gay Olympians last summer in Rio, it was met largely with a pretty loud collective rolling of the eyes. The statement, which was apparentely supposed to take the place of an apology, was seven months in the making and reflected an academic assessment of Hines' failings as a journalist in pretending to be a gay man on the dating app Grindr, then entrapping gay and bisexual male Olympians to reveal themselves to a journalist. While there's no sense in debating whether Hines' apology was appropriate or not -- it wasn't -- we talk about just how bad it was and how it stacks up against other bad apologies in sports history. With David Denson's retirement, the Big Four sports leagues in North America are again left without any publicly out gay athletes for the first time since 2013. Denson was a player in the Milwaukee Brewers system but never made it to the Majors. Robbie Rogers is still in Major League Soccer but has not played this season. Where does that leave us now? And how important is it to have out athletes in the Big Four sports? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
CoG Studios, CA - The LA Galaxy are quickly closing in on the start of the 2017 Major League Soccer season. And your hosts, Josh Guesman and LA Times Soccer Writer, Kevin Baxter, are also starting to shake off all that offseason rust. First, the guys will go over the latest preseason results, and why, once again, they don't matter. But it's also about what we're learning from Curt Onalfo's starting lineups and who could be and should be available for the season opener. With some special focus on the newest arrival, Romain Alessandrini. Then in a CoG: From the Box exclusive, Kevin Baxter will expand upon the story he recently published in the LA Times where he talks about the extent of the injury to Robbie Rogers and what he learned from talking to the player. He'll share some insight into when the Galaxy knew what, and what kind of pressure that could put on the team as they head into the last remaining days of the preseason. Then Josh and Kevin talk about players that must have a big season for this team if LA are to be successful this year. Some of these names are easy to figure out, and some may surprise you. Who do you think needs to have an outstanding season for the team this year? Finally, your hosts will take your questions and throw in any other tidbit of information they have about the team, the league, and why it's important to be truthful. It's not always about looking good. Sometimes it's important to tell people about the journey. Do you have your own Galaxy journey to talk about? Much like the one Josh shares? We'd love to hear it. It's another almost, 60-minutes of LA Galaxy talk and we're glad that you could join us. Music Provided by Back Pocket Memory

CoG Studios, CA - The LA Galaxy are already in injury trouble. Which means your Corner of the Galaxy hosts are already worked up and thinking about "worst case scenarios." And apparently, you also have some questions. Because this show is filled with your questions and your calls. First, your hosts, Josh Guesman and Wendy Thomas, will briefly look back at the game played in Las Vegas. What can we learn from this game and what is the one really positive thing to take away from the first two preseason games of the year? It's something to talk about, if not the ONLY thing to talk about. So what can you expect from the team this year? Josh and Wendy try and figure out what the Galaxy's style could be and why this year's team is a different "beast" than last year's team. There's a youth movement, and with that comes a lot of question marks. And will Curt Onalfo follow Bruce's lead in terms of exciting play? Is that even possible? Then your hosts will look at the much more serious injuries to Gyasi Zardes and Robbie Rogers. Who will replace them and what does this mean? Do the Galaxy have replacements that are capable of filling in? What was the timeline of these injuries and what does that mean the front office knew before making moves to bolster or thin their roster? Finally, Josh and Wendy will take your questions and your phone calls en route to 60-minutes of LA Galaxy talk. And where else can you get this much fun and information on the one thing you spend all your money on? That's right, Corner of the Galaxy is here for you. Consider it group therapy. CoG Studios, CA - The show today revolves around the LA Galaxy's latest preseason match - a 1-0 loss to rivals, San Jose, in a game that should probably only be remembered for 28-minutes of play from newly acquired João Pedro. But as is customary, your hosts Josh Guesman and LA Times Soccer Writer, Kevin Baxter, will find some other interesting things you should be talking about with all your Galaxy friends. The Galaxy went to Las Vegas, for the second year in a row, and played on a baseball field. The starters went 60-minutes in most cases and the "First Team" continued its streak of not being scored on while also not scoring - that's two games, no goals allowed, no goals for. And while it might not be important about who played in this game, the absences are starting to get louder and louder. Think of the players who haven't played any minutes for the Galaxy yet this preseason and you'll see why our two hosts are once again pointing out the lack of depth at almost every position the Galaxy seem to have. Gyasi Zardes hasn't seen any playing time since a "minor" knee contusion. Robbie Rogers doesn't look like he's seen the training field since sometime in mid-January. And Romain Alessandrini has yet to get a visa and start building chemistry with the rest of the team. Josh and Kevin will discuss these absences and tell you where you should be worried. The guys will also talk about Dave Sarachan's reason for leaving the LA Galaxy, and it's not exactly how you thought it all went down. Have the Galaxy lost some respect amongst players and coaches? Is it important to have a front office who does things the "right way?" Are the Galaxy approaching this wrong? Finally, Josh and Kevin will answer your questions en route to an almost 60-minute show. You wanted more LA Galaxy talk, and we're going to give it you. And don't miss the important tattoo discussion at the end of the show. We'll need your suggestions. It's another great show with some interesting information from two reporters who spend most of their time contemplating this team and figuring out what this season could look like. When openly gay professional soccer player Robbie Rogers said last week that he was the target of on-field gay slurs, people were outraged. In his three years since coming out publicly, it was the first slurs he had heard directed at him. When it was revealed the person using the slurs was Richard Chaplow, the United Soccer League suspended him two games. Except, Chaplow claims he never used slurs because he has LGBT family members; And his team is saying Rogers simply "misheard" Chaplow. What gives? Plus, America's most popular sport is back. Football season kicks off with college football games, and the NFL season is around the corner. Where are we now with acceptance of gay men in football? Is the sport inherently homophobic, inherently pro-gay or somewhere in between? We talk about several developments over the last couple of months that give us insight into the sport. Robbie Rogers played for the Columbus Crew and the U.S. national team before going abroad and joining Leeds United. Soon after, he abruptly quit the game and announced that he was gay. When he came out of retirement, with the LA Galaxy, Rogers became the first and only gay male athlete in any of the the big American sports leagues. He also wrote a book about growing up with such a big secret, keeping it from family, friends, teammates, coaches—everybody. This is the first in a Dummy companion series we’re calling 1v1. The idea is to talk to some of the leading players, managers, businesspeople, journalists—and not just about the usual stuff, but to really go deep on the experiences and points of view that make them unique. In this interview, Robbie talks about what it was like in the U.S. residency program in Bradenton as a teenager—he only stayed for a little while because it was such an unwelcoming environment. He speaks about locker room culture here in the U.S. and in England. He spoke about his internship in London, where he would transform from celebrated pro soccer player in the morning to the guy who fetched the coffee in the afternoon. Rogers says he believes people think he’s stuck up when he first meets them because he’s an introvert and very shy: “I’m probably that way because I’ve been closeted for so long and I don’t trust a lot of people.” He says that he’s always felt like an outcast. All told, it’s an incredibly honest and open and enjoyable conversation. In the coming weeks and months, we’ll publish similar interviews with Carli Lloyd, Sean Johnson, Alexi Lalas, Christen Press, Paul Gardner, and others. Learn more about your ad choices. CoG Studios, CA - The LA Galaxy fell far short of completing a difficult road match against Toronto over the weekend. Sure they were missing several key players due to injuries and international absences, but is that an excuses for the anemic offense? Your hosts Josh Guesman and, LA Galaxy Insider, Adam Serrano take a look at the 1-0 loss and try to figure out where the Galaxy went wrong. Even with talent missing it's not a stretch of the imagination to say this team is ridiculously talented. They've got players like Ashley Cole, Nigel De Jong, Jelle Van Damme and Sebastian Lletget. So why can't this offense get started. And with the injuries to Steven Gerrard, Giovani dos Santos and Robbie Rogers was it likely that Bruce Arena is playing it safe with a heavily congested schedule on the horizon? The guys will talk about the number of games that are upcoming and why it's so important this LA Galaxy team finds a way to win without all their stars. It's time someone steps up for this team. Who's it going to be? Finally, Josh and Adam talk about the Wednesday night matchup with Colorado. It's "Pride Night" and there are plenty of awesome offers that can see you at the game with only $20 invested. You can also get an awesome scarf and donate to a worthy cause. Visit the LA Galaxy's website for more information (www.lagalaxy.com/pride). But the Colorado Rapids are the best team in Major League Soccer this year. And they continued they're winning ways against Chicago last weekend, even without some of their key pieces. Our hosts tell you why this game is so important and point out some of the key players that might figure in this game. It's a short show for a short week, but we'll be doing this all again on Thursday as the Galaxy prepare for a California Clasico.

The LA Galaxy are deep on the defensive side of the ball. And with many players coming back off the injury list, we wanted to know who's in starting backline? On today's show, your hosts Josh Guesman and LA Galaxy Insider, Adam Serrano are joined by Four Four Two's Scott French (@ScottJFrench) to discuss the LA Galaxy's defense. It's an important conversation to understand what this team will have to deal with when and if all their injured players get healthy. Who's your starting backline? Who do you bench? The guys will discuss AJ DeLaGaraza, Daniel Steres, Robbie Rogers, Jelle Van Damme, Ashley Cole and others as they try and figure out who ends up being left out. Bruce Arena has tough decisions to make and that could include benching a player like AJ DeLaGarza. Is AJ's best position in the center of the backline? Or is it out on the right? And if DeLaGarza is playing at right back then where does Robbie Rogers play? Do you bench Daniel Steres if AJ plays at center back? And who plays better in the right back position? Is it AJ or Rogers? There are endless combinations but who gets the start and who gets the bench is up to you! Along the way your hosts will talk about how squad rotation may start to answer some of these questions. After all, this team is filled with players over the age of 30. And maybe you could find a way to move Rogers into midfield? We want to know what you've decided. Hit us up on twitter and lets us know who gets the bench for you starting backline. LA Galaxy Insider Adam Serrano talks about what we learned from the preseason matchup with San Jose in Las Vegas and if this team is CCL ready. It's the dawn of a new soccer season and Corner of the Galaxy: From the Box is finally back from it's winter hibernation. LA Galaxy Insider Adam Serrano rejoins the show and your hosts dive into what was learned from the LA's 1-0 win over San Jose in Las Vegas. The guys talk about Nigel De Jong's LA Galaxy debut. As well as what Jelle Van Damme can do better and how Robbie Rogers and Giovani dos Santos are combining on the right flank. And while fitness is probably the biggest issue, Josh and Adam will also talk about what the LA Galaxy need to to advance over Santos Laguna. If the Galaxy are looking to hang their hat on defense they might want to take a page out of their previous CCL tournament's playbook. LA has to win this game at home. And they have to build a lead before going down to Mexico for the return leg. Can they do it? How will there depth help? Are Boateng and Lletget locked in the most competitive battle for a starting position? And how will Bruce Arena approach this game? All of those questions are asked and answered on our very first 'From the Box' of 2016. Thanks for joining us and we can't wait for this season to finally start. Music Provided by Back Pocket Memory

A recent report said that two gay NFL players are refusing to come out publicly as gay because they don't want a lot of media attention for any kind of big announcement. It's an interesting revelation that both reflects and belies what we think we know about professional athletes. On the one hand they want all the attention they can get to maximize exposure. Exposure means more of the all-mighty dollar that so many of them seek in the short span of their careers. On the flip side, we often hear that athletes don't want to be known as the "gay athlete" but just want to be known for their athletic accomplishments. We discuss the idea of the media keeping athletes in the closet, and also the impact that big-name professional athletes can have when they come out publicly. Plus, we have the growing attention being paid to trans issues in sports and the generosity of one young gay professional athlete named Robbie Rogers. Learn more about your ad choices. On this episode of Corner of the Galaxy, your hosts Josh Guesman and Jared DuBois have the task of setting you straight on what this slow start but the LA Galaxy means. Does it mean that Robbie Rogers is out at Left Back? Does it mean Omar Gonzalez has to step up and start earning that Designated Player roll? Plus could you really expect all that much from an LA Galaxy team that missing most of it's offensive fire power? Then Fox Sports' Alexi Lalas stops by to talk the LA Galaxy's first 4 games. What does he like? Where does he see the struggles of a team looking to find some footing? And what can the Galaxy expect from a highly confident Vancouver? Alexi tells it like he sees it and nothing else could be expected. Finally, the guys get you updated on team news including the LA Galaxy's newest Goalkeeper, and a baby announcement, before shifting their attention to the Vancouver Whitecaps. It's a great show with tons of LA Galaxy information, news and analysis with just the right amount of nonsense thrown in. Professional football has a problem with homophobia. There are gay footballers, but most feel compelled to keep their sexual orientation a secret. Hardtalk speaks to Robbie Rogers, a US international who plays for LA Galaxy. He broke football's great taboo by very publicly coming out after a spell in English football. But why haven't other gay footballers followed his lead?(Photo: Robbie Rogers #14 of Los Angeles Galaxy. Credit: Jeff Gross/Getty Images)
