Bonita Burney Simmons Born to Sing... Without a doubt, Bonita has been anointed to sing! She was born on March 28, 1971 in Stamford, CT and was singing before she could even speak! As early as age 3, Bonita would hear lyrics on the radio and mimic exactly what she heard. During her first live performance, Bonita blew her audience away! People were so impressed and amazed, as they simply couldn't believe this big voice was coming from such a little girl! After spending her early years with her parents in Hartford,CT, her family relocated to Kinston, NC in 1974. Bonita would hone her skills while participating in music programs offered in Lenoir County Public Schools. She joined the chorus and in 5th grade, she was chosen to sing “The Way We Were” by Barbara Streisand. When she sang that song, there was not a dry eye in the room. During her 8th & 9th grade years, she was always active in the community, performing at events like NAACP banquets or weddings. She is a graduate of Kinston High School, Class of 1989, an alumni of Craven Community College with an Associates of Arts, and and alumni of the UAFWB Bible College where she graduated as valedictorian of the 2015 class with a Bachelor of Biblical Studies. To maintain a competitive edge, Bonita took years of private lessons with vocal coaches under the tutelage of Thomasine Hassell, Chantel Hollacheck, the late Wynona Daves, and Martha Mainor. Bonita's Singing Career... At age 12, she started her own gospel singing group, a trio called “Tried by Fire.” Determined and focused, Bonita thrived in her role as band leader and demonstrated her entrepreneurial skills at a very young age. Bonita would open up for all the national recording gospel artists who came to town like Shirley Caesar, John P. Kee, Luther Barnes, The Winans, The Williams Brothers and many others. Bonita has appeared and won first place on numerous occasions at the world famous Apollo Theatre in New York City. By the time she reached high school, she was already considered a professional singer! Today, Bonita is enjoying the flexibility of being an independent recording artist. Her talent is in high demand, as she is frequently requested to sing at venues and events throughout Eastern North Carolina! In June of 2017,  Bonita was nominated and won two awards given by The Rhythm of Gospel Awards for Traditional Artist of the Year and Best Performance by a Female Artist in Jacksonville, Florida. She also in July of 2017 was nominated and recognized as the winner in the Independent Gospel Artist category of Traditional Vocalist of the Year from the Radio Alliance Awards also located in Jacksonville, Florida.  Although she's experienced many tribulations, Bonita's life lessons are part of her unique tapestry that enables her to relate to people who are hurting. One of her biggest accomplishments is her outreach work with those who are incarcerated, sharing God's love through song. Indeed, Bonita has defined her own success, choosing to embrace an obedient lifestyle according to God's will for her life and career. She simply allows God to do the navigation and depends solely on Him to direct her career path- living by her motto, “If I make the way, then I'll have to pay the way. But if I allow HIM to make the way, he'll pay the way!" Bonita married her husband/manager, Eric B. Simmons in 1994. They have three wonderful children- Mykeva, E.J. and Landon. In October of 2000, Bonita was ordained into the Ministry as "Elder" by national Bishop Andrew Mcrorey Jr. of the Joy Mission Church of Deliverance, Hartford, CT. She also continues to serve Family Worship Center, "Ministry of Restoration" where the Pastor is George E. Fields Jr. Because serving and outreach is a part of the tapestry for Bonita's unique song ministry, being a part of the legacy of her father, the late, Bishop Landon O. Burney and the ministry that he founded is the reason she serves with great tenacity. Bonita and her family became members of Without Limits Christian Center in 2016 where the Pastors are James and Le'Conte McIver. Whenever and wherever there's a NEED; Bonita serves

"My goal as an artist, conductor, and thought leader is to make sure that we always start with 'why are we singing? Are we picking these pieces because people are telling us that we should, because they've been prescribed by lists? Sometimes we should ask, 'Why are we still doing it?'" Adrian Dunn is a critically acclaimed singer, composer, and conductor. PASTOR CHERRY IS HERE WITH NEW MUSIC. Nah-Tarsha Cherry, at the age of three got on the stage with her mother and other adults upon the discovery that God had blessed her with a voice. This gift was undeniable to everyone around her and she went on to hold soprano in her mothers' various gospel groups and choirs. By age ten, Nah-Tarsha performed with Gospel legends such as the Oneal twins and backing up Savoy recording artist Dorothy Bloat and Dorothy Norwood. She went on to receive a standing ovation at Harlem's famous Apollo by the time she was ten years old. Nah-Tarsha had entered a junior high performing arts school continuing her exposure to different genres of music and also performing at venues such as the Cotton Club, The Savoy Manor and the Sweetwater's Supper Club, having backed up TV actress Charnele Brown from the TV series “A Different World”. Although her first love was music, by the time she had turned fifteen years old she had taken an interest in acting and was an extra in the motion picture “Lean on Me”. In High School she went on to create a gospel choir and that year received an achievement award for the town of Southampton, New York. After attending “five towns college,” a music college based in Long Island for a year she continued allowing God to use her voice and the anointing that he had placed in her. In 1998 she got her first starring role in the off-Broadway gospel play “After All These Years”. She also went on to record several albums with her mother, which earned some airplay, and in 2006 was a part of the “Bobby Jones Gospel Summit 2006”. During this time Nah-Tarsha started to become clear that God was calling her into the ministry and in 2007 finally answered her call. God has seen fit to take this woman into the next level of her ministry. As she continues to be a blessingto the body of Christ, there has never been an audience that has not experienced that when she opens up her mouth, God truly has his hand on her. She sings with passion and conviction and is sure to be infectious to all that are around. In the words of the artist “Only what you do for Christ will last.” In 2011 her EP “Glad” was released receiving airplay in New York, Maryland, and California. In 2013 Nah-Tarsha Cherry released her new single “Strong “on iTunes, Google play and Amazon mp3 as well as a music video which can be seen on YouTube and Gospel Video TV and her commercials appeared nationally on BET and the OWN network. In 2014 Nah-tarsha Cherry was featured in the April/May issue of Gospel USA, in an article named CHERRY ON TOP. She was one the recipients ofthe Lehigh Valley Soul Music Awards in the gospel category as well as a Leap of Faith Award for her work with the youth. The highly anticipated album “They that wait” was released in December 2014 on Itunes, Google play, Amazon mp3 as well as other online stores. Nah-tarsha Cherry's “Even Me” video came out in January 2015, dedicating this video and album to her mother and manager the late Pastor D.E. Wright, having transitioned in July 2014. ¨ Received Lehigh Valley Soul Award” (Gospel Category) 2014 ¨ First Gospel Act 90 minute performance at Musikfest” Aug. 2016 ¨ Performed at various events during the Stellar Awards Week, Las Vegas” March 2017 ¨ Premiere of gospel single “Yes” 2017 ¨ Rhythm of Gospel Awards, Florida, performance, Main Stage and Radio Awards “June 2017 ¨In 2018 she would produce through her label two major concerts gracing the stage with multi-platinum gospel artist Marvin Sapp, Jermaine Dolly, Isabel Davis and other notable gospel artists. ¨November 2019 she was invited to appear on Atlanta Live Television aside legendary Gospel Great Dorothy Norwood. ¨On Dec 31st 2019 “He Was” a Christmas song penned by Nah-tarsha Cherry received national attention landing on the Gospel Billboard charts. ¨February 2020 released a single titled “Perfect Stranger.” ¨August 25th 2020 she released her Sophomore Album “Saved looks like Me.” Nah-Tarsha Cherry with her praise and worship style mixed with jazz, R&B, and even a little rock and roll, can't be defined and has never been boxed in musically. God definitely uses her gift to be a blessing to the un-churched as well as the believer. Nah-Tarsha has once said she was put on this earth to minister and that she would do that until the day she dies. As she continues walking into her destiny and allowing God to carve space for her in this industry, eyes have not seen, nor have ears heard so just stay tuned…

HOW SWEET THE SOUND - BEHIND THE MUSIC
Kevin Lemons & Higher Calling

HOW SWEET THE SOUND - BEHIND THE MUSIC

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 3, 2020 17:29

Gospel singer and choir director Kevin Lemons has made a name for himself as musical force to be reckoned with. Considered to have one of the most dynamic choirs known as Higher Calling, Lemons brings a uniquely yet powerful sound that captures the energy, flare and spirit in song and performance. Lemons drew inspiration from other gospel performers including Milton Brunson, Thomas Whitfield, James Cleveland, Rev. James Moore and the great O'Landa Draper. Lemon's soulful and dynamic sound has been instantly recognizable in the gospel industry and is showcased here on his debut release. Biography: Kevin S. Lemons, son of the late Wilbert and Ruth Lemons, was born into a great legacy of vocalists, musicians and directors. His grandmother, Mrs. Annie Ruth Lemons, is the founder of the legendary Atlanta Masonic Choir which was organized in 1942 and still exists today. Kevin's father, Wilbert, was an accomplished director and his mother, Ruth, an accomplished lead vocalist. Needless to say, Kevin's path would undoubtedly be one filled with music. A noted director, choral and instrumental arranger, gifted vocalist and skilled musician, Kevin S. Lemons exemplifies greatness by every measure of the word. With a strong conviction for biblical principles and righteous living, Kevin's parents reared him in a God - fearing home and encouraged his involvement in church at a very young age. In church and on travels with the Atlanta Masonics young Kevin was affording the opportunity to develop himself as a musician, singer and director. Asked how much he was impacted by his introduction to gospel performances at a young age he responds 'those experiences made me who I am today. Watching my father direct and teach while witnessing my mother's vocal ability are things I cherish.' Without doubt Mr. and Mrs. Lemons were very instrumental in identifying, developing and nurturing the gifts their son possessed. With the support and blessings of his parents Kevin responded to a great call to begin his own music ministry in 1996. Gathering a few singing friends and acquaintances in a small church is where is all began. Kevin Lemons, with God's direction and purpose in his heart, organized Higher Calling. This ministry, collectively known as Kevin Lemons & Higher Calling, set out on a fast track to success by working diligently to create a sound and image unique to themselves. With Kevin's leadership, Higher Calling began traveling extensively throughout the United States sharing their message of love, unity and the importance of spiritual development...all through song. Kevin Lemons & Higher Calling released their first CD titled Destined for Greatness independently to great acclaim. The title track single 'Destined for Greatness' garnered quite a bit of radio airplay and remains a top choice on radio internet stations. The song was later recording and released in 2011 by Ricky Dillard and New Generation. Today, Higher Calling has grown into a 45 - voice, powerhouse gospel choir known for their skillful vocals, energetic performances, trendsetting style and overall excellence in ministry. Kevin Lemons & Higher Calling have shared stages with many gospel greats to include Fred Hammond, Ricky Dillard, Hezekiah Walker, the Clark Sisters, DeWayne Woods, LeAnn Faine, Donald Lawrence, the late O Landa Draper, Dorothy Norwood, Prophetess Juanita Bynum,Pastor William Murphy, Vashawn Mitchell, B. Chase Williams, and countless others. Additionally, the ministry has been nationally-televised with appearances on BET's Bobby Jones Gospel, Gospel Music Channel's The Kitchen Sink, and the Gospel Superfest. The choir has also ministered at the Dorsey Convention, GMWA, the Full Gospel Baptist Church Conference, Rhythm of Gospel Awards, COGIC Convocation to name a few.

The ArtistFrozene Lott Hayes The gospel music ministry of multiple Rhythm of Gospel Award-winning artist Frozene Lott Hayes is a living testimony to faith triumphant over tribulation. When she began her ministry in 1982 as an Independent Gospel Artist with the songs “Lord Will You Use Me” and “Already Been to the Water,” Frozene had no idea that one day, in the depths of her own personal tragedy, she herself would be embracing such words and feelings, ultimately rejuvenated by the very music that God has blessed her with the talent to bring forth. Since her first release in 1985 of a Traditional Gospel recording of 6 songs, titled “Reach Out For Jesus,” Frozene has recorded “Build Bridges Instead of Walls,” produced by renowned Chicago music producer Richard Gibbs (2003), and “Thank You Jesus One More Time,” produced by the director of the Orchestra Nashville Gospel Choir, Nathan Young (2007). In 2011, she released her first single, “There is a God.” Her most-recently released single is “Oh Lord, Who Shall Abide.” She is the lead vocalist on two of the Late Reverend C.L. Fairchild's performances -- “I've Got a Testimony” and “Have You Tried Him” -- with his Voices of Greater Faith; and she has appeared on Nashville's legendary Nashville Gospel TV show, and recorded Live TV Tapings for Chicago's Gospel TV, “Testify,” “Dr. Bobby Jones Gospel,” and Nashville's “Reaching the World Ministries.” In 2006, the year in which she would receive “Most Influential African American Arts & Entertainment Award” through the People's Voice News in Waukegan, Frozene suffered the loss of 2 sons in separate tragedies. With God's help, Frozene persevered. After establishing the Lt. Robert Hayes & Aaron Hayes Memorial Scholarship and Youth Basketball Foundation, she released “Thank You Jesus One More Time,” a CD thanking her comforting Saviour. Frozene has received Rhythm of Gospel Awards for 2014 Traditional Female Vocalist of the Year, 2012 Praise and Worship Song of the Year, and three award nominations in 2011. Frozene Lott Hayes is a licensed and ordained minister serving at Mt. Nebo Baptist Missionary Baptist Church (Theodore Bryson Sr., Pastor), Nashville, Tenn. She holds a B.A. degree in Psychology and Criminal Justice from Columbia College of Missouri.

We consider ourselves modern day Levites,” shares Dalton.

With parents active in ministry, her father a bishop and mother a missionary and teacher, the Word of God was planted in her heart at an early age. Jenise began singing on the children's choir at the tender age of 2 and at the age of 11 she began writing her own songs. From the wise advice of her father, Jenise continued writing, acquired a vocal coach who helped her hone her craft and was given several opened doors to minister through song.In 2007, Jenise joined forces with Rahim Beyah of Czar Entertainment producing a 3-song demo, which was released locally. In 2009, she competed in the 1st annual Gospel Star Search at the Greater Refuge Temple Church of Out Lord Jesus Christ (COOLJC), where she came in second place. In December of 2010 Jenise toured Europe with J. David Bratton and the New York State Mass Choir. After being given the opportunity to see the world, the fire began to burn again with excitement in Jenise's heart to produce her own music."This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come (2 Timothy 3:1)." Aren't they here? With a dire thirst for ministry and evangelism in music, Jenise La Vonne sets the tone for a new era. Blending the sounds of Contemporary Gospel and Contemporary Christian music all while being rooted in the traditional Gospel message, Jenise La Vonne's sound and mission for her music is undeniably EVANGELISTIC; for it seeks to minister to the soul. Since then the two have begun production on her forthcoming project entitled “THE CALL”. With musical influences from Dorothy Dandridge and Tina Turner to Vickie Winans and John P. She’sfervent in her delivery, a singer navigating the deceptively complex demands of a gospel song. The innocence that“The Wonder of You” exudes will likely appeal most to the youth and young adult demographic.Lybra BoydReview:There's something about Jenise La Vonne that makes her message instantly believable. Maybe it's that she conveys the lyrics of her single "Do What Jesus Says" with a not-often-used combination of gentle earnest. Perhaps it's because she sings as if the lyrics are a part of her lived experience. Whatever the likely reason, when Jenise ascends to the uppers of her alto register to reiterate, "I'll only do what, I'll only do what, I'll only do what Jesus says," you get that she means it.It's just that simple. And nearly as simple is the accompaniment, notably the barely audible strings underneath the moreprominent acoustic guitar (and its periodic fret noise). Occasionally, Jenise backs herself like a reassuring voice of wisdom in the unhurried, introspective ballad.

Milton Biggham, then the President of Savoy Records, who gave her a little piece of paper with three lines that said "Look Where He Brought Me From" . With those three lines, she sang lead vocals on the track that appeared on the Georgia Mass Choir’s 1985 album ‘We’ve Got the Victory’ . The song became an instant hit on The Gospel Billboard Charts and is still sung across the country in churches even today. Along with Georgia Mass Choir, Voncile also sang lead on ‘Hold To God’s Unchanging Hand’ also written by Gospel-Great James Bignon.Continuing her solo career with a leap of faith. it led her to the release her first solo album entitled ‘Be Strong’. Coming off the highs of ‘Be Strong’ she began to cultivate her gift of writing, releasing her second project ‘What a Time’ in which she did a vast array of writing, arranging, and co-producing. Once more again with success and opportunity in view, she then released her third project with Low Rush Music “Kourageous" in the Summer 2010. 2014 was an exciting year for Lady Voncile Belcher as she was awarded by the Rhythm of Gospel Awards as the "Traditional Artist of the Year" and is already nominated in 3 categories for the 2015 Awards Show. Under her own newly formed Glory Bound (GB) Records, and working with Producers Tim Fryar and Rodney Edge and New Me Productions, her single release of the song " Alright" is playing on the radio in the U.S. and International markets. The Christmas release of "A Time to Celebrate" proved as a seasonal hit with a perpetual impact. And now in 2015, the highly anticipated release of her fourth solo project entitled "Phenomenal" where you will be sure to hear a fresh, new, and innovative Lady Voncile Belcher.
