After starting with Everton's most-successful skipper Kevin Ratcliffe at the Cheshire Cat pub in Christleton in March 2024, the 20th and final episode of the Goodison Park: My Home series sees Chris Beesley at ‘The Grand Old Lady' herself, to speak to current club captain Seamus Coleman. Arguably the best pound for pound signing of the Premier League era with his fabled “Sixty Grand” fee that features in a popular supporters' song, the Republic of Ireland international holds the Blues record for the most matches in the competition and is widely regarded as being their best player in his position of modern times. Lauded by then Everton manager Frank Lampard as “the best man I've ever met,” after the 3-2 comeback win over Crystal Palace in 2022 to secure top flight survival, the right-back from Killybegs, County Donegal, has epitomised the ‘Spirit of the Blues' both on and off the pitch for over 16 years since joining from Sligo Rovers in January 2009 and unlike many of his team-mates, he chooses to live in Liverpool itself. Speaking in his usual, candid manner, Coleman talks passionately to the ECHO about his love for Goodison Park, Everton Football Club and its fanbase.   Goodbye to Goodison special souvenir edition:  https://tinyurl.com/GoodbyeGoodisonSouvenir Gavin Buckland's Book 'The End' | Order your copy here: https://tinyurl.com/GavinBucklandTheEnd Everton FC podcasts from the Liverpool ECHO's Royal Blue YouTube channel. Player Prop Outcomes: Notable stats included Joe Mixon's performance over 85.5 rushing yards last week, showing the efficacy of the team's prop betting recommendations. Brock Bowers' Rising Targets: Highlighted for his dependable receiving stats (e.g., over 18.5 yards long reception in 8/10 games), positioning him as a key Raiders player. Player Prop Disagreements: Differing opinions on Gardner Minshew's passing yard props showcased diverse perspectives, balancing stats and game strategy. Monday Night Football Dynamics: Previewed Ravens vs. Chargers, focusing on Baltimore's stout rush defense against Los Angeles' aerial attack. Colleges have become a hotbed of division as students from all walks of life cross paths with each other, and academic agendas shape discourse and student life on campuses. As Gen Z casts some of their first ballots in 2024, how can they learn to have more respectful dialogue about the issues that matter most to them? In this interview, Dr. Pano Kanelos provides his perspective and ideas on how to encourage open dialogue on college campuses and educational settings.Dr. Panayiotis (Pano) Kanelos is the Founding President of the University of Austin (UATX). Lauded by Forbes as one of higher education's “academic entrepreneurs,” Dr. Kanelos was President of St. John's College, Annapolis, the nation's most storied great books liberal arts college. During his tenure, St. John's successfully launched a historic initiative that included the most significant tuition reduction at any American college, accompanied by a $300 million campaign. He is widely acclaimed as one of the country's most powerful advocates for liberal education and believes polarization on university campuses today reflects a “hardening” of empathy within American culture. He and the other co-founders started the school in response to their belief that college campuses were no longer a place where students and faculty could openly exchange ideas. “You can't translate poetry into prose. That's why it's poetry.”At a poetry reading at a San Francisco art gallery in October 1955, Allen Ginsberg — one of the defining members of the Beat generation — debuted a poem called "Howl." Lauded for its portrayal of what it meant to be an outcast in 1950s society and for its depiction of drug use and sexuality, its success led to Ginsberg's first collection of poetry. Within five months of its publication, the U.S. government seized some 300 copies of it, only to drop the case fairly quickly. The San Francisco police department, however, was not impressed and launched a local, as opposed to a federal, effort to ban the book from city bookstores. Literary freedom of speech was being put on trial yet again, and the poem was about to have the last laugh.Additional narrations were provided by Sharon Hyland. Since her 2015 debut, Hayley has amassed over 780 million global streams, over 2.1 million YouTube subscribers and has accrued over 730 million lifetime YouTube views, in addition to selling out numerous venues across the country and abroad on her previous headline tour. Lauded as one of “The 21st Century's Most Influential Women Musicians” by NPR among other milestones, Hayley continues to impact and inspire her community. Through her honest storytelling and lyricism, she encourages hope as her resounding message, showcased on her collection of songs. Earlier this year, Hayley launched her gender-inclusive fragrance, “HUE,” available to order now at huebyhayley.com. Episode 10: TIMOTHY LEARY'S LAST TRIP

The Passage

In this mesmerizing and introspective episode of The Passage, the Ferryman, voiced by Dan Fogler (Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, The Walking Dead), ushers in a passenger whose journey through the realms of consciousness transformed a generation. Timothy Leary, voiced by Martin Starr (Freaks and Geeks / Silicon Valley), an emblem of the psychedelic revolution and a figure of boundless controversy, steps aboard, his legacy a kaleidoscope of enlightenment, rebellion, and the quest for transcendence. As they navigate the swirling mists of perception and reality, Leary recounts his odyssey—a saga marked by his advocacy for psychedelic drugs, his countless encounters with the law, and his daring escapes from the confines of societal norms. Lauded by some as a brave neuronaut and a hero of American consciousness, and vilified by others as the most dangerous man in America, Leary's life is a testament to the power of ideas to ignite change and challenge the status quo. In this episode, the Ferryman delves beyond Leary's counter-culture exploits and confrontational persona, uncovering the multifaceted individual behind the myth. Leary reflects on his journey, from his groundbreaking research in psychology to his role as a pied piper of the mind-expanding sixties, inviting listeners to reconsider the man whose mantra, "Turn on, tune in, drop out," became the soundtrack of an era. But as the journey reaches its zenith, a sobering revelation emerges—despite his mastery in escaping the physical and mental confines of the conventional world, there are fates from which even the most adept escape artist cannot flee. Leary confronts the ultimate trip, a voyage from which there is no return, and in doing so, he is forced to face the essence of his own legacy and the ripples it left in the fabric of society and individual consciousness. In this episode of The Passage listeners are invited to embark on a journey through the mind and legacy of Timothy Leary, exploring the delicate interplay between freedom and consequence, enlightenment and delusion. Traverse the uncharted territories of the human psyche, where the tales of Timothy Leary, the Psychedelic Sage, challenges our perceptions of reality and legacy. Tune in, and join us on the final trip, where the boundaries of consciousness are transcended. Written by Rob Mosca.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Gajin Fujita is a graffiti artist whose work transcends boundaries and seamlessly blends the rich tapestry of Japanese tradition with the vibrant energy of Western urban culture. In this episode, Fujita talks about his early days as a graffiti artist in tagging crews like KGB and KIIS and his current status as a major star in LA's downtown art scene. He also shares how he blends Japanese techniques and symbols with Western urban pop culture to create visually contrasting masterpieces that transcend space and time. Born in 1972, Gajin Fujita is the son of Japanese parents – a fine art painter father and art conservator mother – who raised him and his brothers in Boyle Heights, a historic immigrant neighborhood just east of Downtown Los Angeles and the L.A. River. As a teenager, Fujita became fascinated with graffiti, joining the tagging crews KGB (Kidz Gone Bad) and KIIS (Kill to Succeed). Through graffiti, Fujita followed his own path towards fine art and received his BA from Otis College of Art & Design, Los Angeles, and his MFA from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he found mentorship under art critic Dave Hickey. Reverence for Japanese art history and pride for his identity as an L.A. native assert equal importance in Fujita's work. Lauded by Christopher Knight of the Los Angeles Times as “the most important 21st-century iteration of graffiti's influence on art,” Fujita's paintings incorporate graffiti language, traditional iconography drawn from Edo-period woodblock prints, and symbols of West Coast culture.

In the heart of the maelstrom that was World War I, amidst the chaos of battlefields and the deafening roars of machine guns, a most unexpected hero emerged—an unassuming man named Alvin York. York's journey was not one of conventional heroism; rather, it was a saga of unwavering courage, unyielding faith, and a relentless commitment to a higher calling. He said, "I surrounded them." Alvin York's testicular fortitude was in his strategic brilliance that completely went against all of the conventional norms of warfare. He was born in a log cabin near the Tennessee-Kentucky border in 1887, grew up in a family sustained by subsistence farming and hunting.  In 1915, he had an experience with God, and became a devout Christian As World War I engulfed the world, York, now a man of profound faith, sought conscientious objector status upon being drafted.  That pacifist position was challenged though, when he encountered Luke 22:36  "He who hath no sword, let him sell his cloak and buy one." Guided by those words from Jesus, York abandoned his initial stance and enlisted in the U.S. Army's 82nd Infantry Division. The crucible of York's heroism unfolded on October 8, 1918, during the Meuse-Argonne offensive, the final Allied push against German forces. Tasked with seizing German-held positions, York's battalion was under fire - a German machine-gun nest rained bullets upon them. As chaos ensued and the unit's numbers dwindled, York was thrust to the forefront, commanding a squad of merely 17 men. Undeterred by the odds, York, feeling a divine calling, advanced alone against the machine-gun position. Drawing upon his sharpshooting skills cultivated during Tennessee Turkey hunting days, he systematically neutralized the enemy. The undergrowth around him ablaze with gunfire, York's determination and marksmanship cut through the chaos, with lethal precision. Ammo was running short. Six Germans charged him with bayonettes, and with only seven shots, he took out all six. As he approached the German commanding officer, the tide of the battle irreversibly turned. Faced with the inevitable, the officer surrendered his entire unit, a total of 132 men, in exchange for his life. York's story reverberated far beyond the battlefield. Lauded as "the war's biggest hero" by The New York Times and hailed by General John J. Pershing as "the greatest civilian soldier" of World War I, York returned home to a hero's welcome. He leveraged his fame to found a school for underprivileged children, the York Industrial Institute. In 1941, Hollywood immortalized his bravery in the movie "Sergeant York," starring Gary Cooper.  When York died in 1964, President Lyndon Johnson eulogized him as "a symbol of American courage and sacrifice," embodying "the gallantry of American fighting men and their sacrifices on behalf of freedom." Alvin York, A humble man propelled by faith and armed with unyielding determination, became a symbol of courage, defying expectations and inspiring generations.  His name echoes as a testament to the enduring power of faith, courage, and commitment on the battlefield. Against All Hope: Former NBA Star Chris Herren on Addiction, Sobriety & Service

This is one of the most powerful conversations on the subject of addiction and redemption I've been honored to host in the eleven-year history of this show. Left untreated, addiction decimates everything in its path. I've lived through it. I've borne witness to its wrath in countless others. And I've walked the wreckage it inevitably reaps. But my story pales in comparison to what Chris Herren has endured—and survived to now share in service of helping others. Lauded as one of the greatest basketball players of his generation before he even graduated high school, Chris graced the cover of Sports Illustrated during his freshman year playing point guard for Boston College. Ousted courtesy of his outsized partying led him west to Fresno State, where he flourished for a flash under legendary coach Jerry Tarkanian, leading to stints in the NBA with the Denver Nuggets and Boston Celtics. It didn't last (it never does) so he took his game across the European and Asian circuits, a ticking time-bomb awaiting detonation. Basketball simply couldn't compete with alcohol, cocaine, and heroin. So it wasn't long before Chris' nightmare turned him into into roadkill—an overdose he barely survived that would, inelegantly and eventually, lead to a rebirth and redemption. What has transpired in the 14 years since Chris got sober is a remarkable, phoenix-like journey of recovery and redemption that has transformed his life from utterly craven to one of extraordinary purpose, meaning, and selfless service as a leading voice on the topic of substance use prevention. Note: This conversation traverses difficult emotional terrain. If you are struggling, please raise your hand and reach out for help. You can find information about Alcoholics Anonymous (and meetings near you) at AA.org and Narcotics Anonymous at NA.org. You can also contact SAMHSA's National Helpline at 1-800-662-HELP. If you are experiencing suicidal ideation, know you're not alone. I encourage you to call the Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1(800) 273-TALK. If you are suffering from some form of addiction, this episode is a must-listen. Even if you're not an addict, I encourage you to embrace this conversation as a means to better understand the affliction, as chances are you probably know someone in need of help. The 90s sit-com Seinfeld is often called "a show about nothing." Lauded for its observational humor, this quick-witted show focussed on four hapless New Yorkers navigating work, relationships...yada yada yada.Jerry, George, Elaine & Kramer set themselves apart from the characters who populated shows like Friends or Cheers, by being the exact opposite of the characters audiences would normally root for. These four New Yorkers were overly analytical, calculating, and above all, selfish. In other words, they had all the makings of a fascinating case study in economics.Economics professors Linda Ghent and Alan Grant went so far as to write an entire book on the subject, Seinfeld & Economics. The book points readers to economic principles that appear throughout the show, ideas like economic utility, game theory, and the best way to allocate resources in the face of scarcity. On today's show, we make the case that Seinfeld is, at its heart, not a show about nothing, but a show about economics. And that understanding Seinfeld can change the way you understand economics itself. This episode was produced by Alyssa Jeong Perry with help from Emma Peaslee. It was edited by Keith Romer.
