Aja Hammerly, director of developer relations at Google, sees AI as the always-available coding partner developers have long wished for—especially in those late-night bursts of inspiration. In a conversation with Alex Williams at Google Cloud Next, she described AI-assisted coding as akin to having a virtual pair programmer who can fill in gaps and offer real-time support. Hammerly urges developers to start their AI journey with tools that assist in code writing and explanation before moving into more complex AI agents. She distinguishes two types of DevEx AI: using AI to build apps and using it to eliminate developer toil. For Hammerly, this includes letting AI handle frontend work while she focuses on backend logic. The newly launched Firebase Studio exemplifies this dual approach, offering an AI-enhanced IDE with flexible tools like prototyping, code completion, and automation. Her advice? Developers should explore how AI fits into their unique workflow—because development, at its core, is deeply personal and individual.Learn more from The New Stack about the latest AI insights with Google Cloud:Google AI Coding Tool Now Free, With 90x Copilot's OutputGemini 2.5 Pro: Google's Coding Genius Gets an UpgradeQ&A: How Google Itself Uses Its Gemini Large Language ModelJoin our community of newsletter subscribers to stay on top of the news and at the top of your game.

Prequel is launching a new developer-focused service aimed at democratizing software error detection—an area typically dominated by large cloud providers. Co-founded by Lyndon Brown and Tony Meehan, both former NSA engineers, Prequel introduces a community-driven observability approach centered on Common Reliability Enumerations (CREs). CREs categorize recurring production issues, helping engineers detect, understand, and communicate problems without reinventing solutions or working in isolation. Their open-source tools, cre and prereq, allow teams to build and share detectors that catch bugs and anti-patterns in real time—without exposing sensitive data, thanks to edge processing using WebAssembly. The urgency behind Prequel's mission stems from the rapid pace of AI-driven development, increased third-party code usage, and rising infrastructure costs. Traditional observability tools may surface symptoms, but Prequel aims to provide precise problem definitions and actionable insights. While observability giants like Datadog and Splunk dominate the market, Brown and Meehan argue that engineers still feel overwhelmed by data and underpowered in diagnostics—something they believe CREs can finally change.Learn more from The New Stack about the latest Observability insights Why Consolidating Observability Tools Is a Smart MoveBuilding an Observability Culture: Getting Everyone Onboard Join our community of newsletter subscribers to stay on top of the news and at the top of your game.

What an electrifying night at Four Winds Field! A near-historic evening ended in late drama as the South Bend Cubs narrowly avoided being no-hit. Beloit Sky Carp pitchers Karson Milbrandt, Alex Williams, and Ike Burton combined to carry a no-hitter into the bottom of the 9th. But leading off the inning against Beloit’s closer William Kempner, Cristian Hernandez broke up the bid with an infield single—South Bend’s first and only hit of the night. Despite the late blemish, the Sky Carp held firm, closing out a 3–0 victory behind dominant pitching and timely scoring in the 1st, 5th, and 9th innings. South Bend’s pitching was also impressive. Jaxson Wiggins got the start, going 4 innings, allowing just one unearned run and striking out 7. Evan Aschenbeck followed with 4 strong innings of relief, surrendering a single run in the 5th and striking out 3. In total, Cubs pitching tallied 12 strikeouts, making this a classic pitcher’s duel from start to finish. Fans at Four Winds Field were treated to a tension-filled game under ideal baseball conditions—mostly cloudy skies and a comfortable 73°F (23°C). Though the Cubs dodged the no-hitter, it was a night to remember. Cristian Hernandez’s clutch infield hit kept South Bend off the wrong side of history—for now. Final score: Beloit 3, South Bend 0.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of The New Stack Makers, recorded at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe, Alex Williams speaks with Ville Aikas, Chainguard founder and early Kubernetes contributor. They reflect on the evolution of container security, particularly how early assumptions—like trusting that users would validate container images—proved problematic. Aikas recalls the lack of secure defaults, such as allowing containers to run as root, stemming from the team's internal Google perspective, which led to unrealistic expectations about external security practices. The Kubernetes community has since made strides with governance policies, secure defaults, and standard practices like avoiding long-lived credentials and supporting federated authentication. Aikas founded Chainguard to address the need for trusted, minimal, and verifiable container images—offering zero-CVE images, transparent toolchains, and full SBOMs. This security-first philosophy now extends to virtual machines and Java dependencies via Chainguard Libraries. The discussion also highlights the rising concerns around AI/ML security in Kubernetes, including complex model dependencies, GPU integrations, and potential attack vectors—prompting Chainguard's move toward locked-down AI images.Learn more from The New Stack about Container Security and AIChainguard Takes Aim At Vulnerable Java LibrariesClean Container Images: A Supply Chain Security RevolutionRevolutionizing Offensive Security: A New Era With Agentic AI Join our community of newsletter subscribers to stay on top of the news and at the top of your game.

PRESIDENTIAL DEMENTIA; VETERANS' MEDICAL DEBT; A GENERAL STRIKE & THE NEED FOR DIGITAL ORGANIZING Medical specialist DR. NANCY NIPARKO opens GREEP Zoom #220 with a direct quote from Donald Trump and a diagnostic prognosis. Financial organizer JERRY ASHTON tells us his organizing has helped retire $45 billion in medical debt for more than 5 million people, including thousands of veterans, many of whom have thus avoided suicide. Poet Laureate MIMI GERMAN tells us of HEIDI STRANGE-SKY LAMBERT,  who was duly elected mayor of Waldport, Oregon, only to be forcefully removed by the bad bully she was duly elected to remove as mayor.  Heidi's amazing story of being bullied out of the mayor's office is going global. The story of Elon Musk's pro-apartheid parents follows in sequence with our discussion of the rise of Trumpian fascism. Long-time activist DOROTHY REIK expresses her intense dismay that the LA Dodgers went to see Trump in the White House, and calls for a general strike. Having attended the Bernie/AOC rally in Los Angeles, MYLA RESON also references Trump's desire to have “home growns” shipped to death camps in El Salvador. Taking the next step in electronic organizing is directed by LEE FELSENSTEIN toward business cards with QR codes leading to central organizing data bases with the technical help they need. The question of our organizing focus is raised by our steadfast engineer STEVE CARUSO raising the issue of upcoming rallies in central Ohio. The notion of a General Strike is seconded by ALEX WILLIAMS, who warns that pain will be involved, and that we must not be split up by race & gender. The need for general solidarity is underlined by co-convenor MIKE HERSH. Solar homeowner PAUL NEWMAN wonders how we can find the dictatorship's pivotal weakness.   The scourge of the “Christian Nationalist” right wing is rooted out by DAVID BROWN whose podcast demands the protection of religious diversity and rights, especially in Oklahoma, whose governor is erasing the lines between church & state.   From DAVID NADER we get a confirmation for a General Strike and a boycott against paying the bills of utility companies destroying our Earth.

The rise of the World Wide Web enabled developers to build tools and platforms on top of it. Similarly, the advent of large language models (LLMs) allows for creating new AI-driven tools, such as autonomous agents that interact with LLMs, execute tasks, and make decisions. However, verifying these decisions is crucial, and critical reasoning may be a solution, according to Yam Marcovitz, tech lead at Parlant.io and CEO of emcie.co.Marcovitz likens LLM development to the evolution of programming languages, from punch cards to modern languages like Python. Early LLMs started with small transformer models, leading to systems like BERT and GPT-3. Now, instead of mere text auto-completion, models are evolving to enable better reasoning and complex instructions.Parlant uses "attentive reasoning queries (ARQs)" to maintain consistency in AI responses, ensuring near-perfect accuracy. Their approach balances structure and flexibility, preventing models from operating entirely autonomously. Ultimately, Marcovitz argues that subjectivity in human interpretation extends to LLMs, making perfect objectivity unrealistic.Learn more from The New Stack about the evolution of LLMs: AI Alignment in Practice: What It Means and How to Get It Agentic AI: The Next Frontier of AI Power Make the Most of AI Agents: Tips and Tricks for Developers Join our community of newsletter subscribers to stay on top of the news and at the top of your game.

Adam Jacob, CEO of System Initiative, discusses a shift in infrastructure automation—moving from writing code to building models that enable rapid simulations and collaboration. In The New Stack Makers, he compares this approach to Formula One racing, where teams use high-fidelity models to simulate race conditions, optimizing performance before hitting the track.System Initiative applies this concept to enterprise automation, creating a model that understands how infrastructure components interact. This enables fast, multiplayer feedback loops, simplifying complex tasks while enhancing collaboration. Engineers can extend the system by writing small, reactive JavaScript functions that automate processes, such as transforming existing architectures into new ones. The platform visually represents these transformations, making automation more intuitive and efficient.By leveraging models instead of traditional code-based infrastructure management, System Initiative enhances agility, reduces complexity, and improves DevOps collaboration. Heroku has open-sourced its Twelve-Factor App methodology, initially created in 2011 to help developers build portable, resilient cloud applications. Heroku CTO Gail Frederick announced this shift at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America, explaining the move aims to involve the community in modernizing the framework. While the methodology inspired a generation of cloud developers, certain factors are now outdated, such as the focus on logs as event streams. Frederick highlighted the need for updates to address current practices like telemetry and metrics visualization, reflecting the rise of OpenTelemetry. The updated Twelve-Factor methodology will expand to accommodate modern cloud-native realities, such as deploying interconnected systems of apps with diverse backing services. Planned enhancements include supporting documents, reference architectures, and code examples illustrating the principles in action. Success will be measured by its applicability to use cases involving edge computing, IoT, serverless, and distributed systems. Heroku views this open-source effort as an opportunity to redefine best practices for the next era of cloud development.Learn more from The New Stack about Heroku: How Heroku Is Positioned To Help Ops Engineers in the GenAI EraThe Data Stack Journey: Lessons from Architecting Stacks at Heroku and MattermostJoin our community of newsletter subscribers to stay on top of the news and at the top of your game.

In a New Stack Makers episode, Ashley Williams, founder and CEO of axo, highlights how the software world depends on open-source code, which is largely maintained by unpaid volunteers. She likens this to a CVS relying on volunteer-run shipping companies, pointing out how unsettling that might be for customers. The conversation focuses on open-source maintainers' reluctance to be seen as "suppliers" of software, an idea explored in a 2022 blog post by Thomas Depierre. Many maintainers reject the label, as there is no contractual obligation to support the software they provide. Williams critiques the industry's response to this, noting that instead of involving maintainers in software supply chain security, companies have relied on third-party vendors. However, these vendors have no relationship with the maintainers, leading to increased vulnerabilities. Williams advocates for better engagement with maintainers, especially at build time, to improve security. Bob Wise, CEO of Heroku, discussed the impact of generative AI (GenAI) coding tools on software development in a recent episode of The New Stack Makers. He compared the rise of these tools to adding an "infinite number of interns" to development teams, noting that while they accelerate code writing, they don't yet simplify testing, deployment, or production operations. Wise likened this to the early days of Kubernetes, which focused on improving operations rather than the frontend experience. He emphasized that Kubernetes' success was due to its focus on easing the operational burden, something current GenAI tools have yet to achieve.Heroku, acquired by Salesforce in 2010, is positioned to benefit from these changes by helping teams transition to more automated systems. Wise highlighted Heroku's strategic bet on Postgres, a database technology that's gaining traction, especially for GenAI workloads. This purchase, including parcels between North Street and the Cherokee County Justice Center, builds on a previous acquisition of a 2.4-acre law firm site in May 2023. The DDA has also engaged Goodwyn Mills Cawood for a $120,000 conceptual design and surveying project to explore mixed-use opportunities. City officials are working on a housing transition plan for current residents and integrating feedback from a recent downtown master plan. This redevelopment aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance downtown infrastructure and potentially include a new hotel and conference facility. STORY 5:   Canton Man Convicted of Possession of Sawed-Off Shotgun Matthew Miller, 35, was convicted on August 23 by a Cherokee County jury for possessing a sawed-off shotgun. The conviction followed a three-day trial where the jury deliberated for over three hours. The case arose from a May 26, 2023, search warrant execution at Miller's Canton home, where authorities found a loaded, illegally modified shotgun with one round in the chamber and five in the magazine. The trial included testimony from five witnesses and evidence such as bodycam footage and the shotgun itself. Sentencing will be scheduled at a later date. What do skydiving, guitar-playing teenagers, and deep-seated psychic states have in common? They're all intense! In episode 110 of Overthink, Ellie and David untangle the role of intensity in shaping our aspirations, cultural tropes, and political goals. They trace the concept's history from its tricky roots in Aristotle's theory of change, passing through medieval science and princely romanticism, to the thrills of skydiving and breathwork today. They turn to Henri Bergson and Gilles Deleuze's accounts of consciousness and emotion to explore how intensity looks beyond the scientistic impulse to categorize and quantify, and question if intensity is of any help in addressing capitalist acceleration today.Check out the episode's extended cut here!Works DiscussedAristotle, CategoriesZygmunt Bauman, Liquid LifeHenri Bergson, Time and Free WillGilles Deleuze, Difference and RepetitionGustav Theodor Fechner, Elements of PsychophysicsTristan Garcia, The Life Intense: A Modern ObsessionMary Beth Mader, “Whence Intensity? Blockchain technology continues to drive innovation despite declining hype, with Distributed Ledgers (DLTs) offering secure, decentralized digital asset transactions. In an On the Road episode of The New Stack Makers recorded at Open Source Summit North America, Andrew Aitken of Hedera and Dr. Leemon Baird of Swirlds Labs discussed DLTs with Alex Williams. Baird highlighted the Hashgraph Consensus Algorithm, an efficient, secure distributed consensus mechanism he created, leveraging a hashgraph data structure and gossip protocol for rapid, robust transaction sharing among network nodes. This algorithm, which has been open source under the Apache 2.0 license for nine months, aims to maintain decentralization by involving 32 global organizations in its governance. Aitken emphasized building an ecosystem of DLT contributors, adhering to open source best practices, and developing cross-chain applications and more wallets to enhance exchange capabilities. This collaborative approach seeks to ensure transparency in both governance and software development. The Kubernetes community primarily focuses on improving the development and operations experience for applications and infrastructure, emphasizing DevOps and developer-centric approaches. In contrast, the data science community historically moved at a slower pace. However, with the emergence of the AI engineer persona, the pace of advancement in data science has accelerated significantly. Alex Williams, founder and publisher of The New Stack co-hosted a discussion with Sanjeev Mohan, an independent analyst, which highlighted the challenges faced by data-related tasks on Kubernetes due to the stateful nature of data. Unlike applications, restarting a database node after a failure may lead to inconsistent states and data loss. This discrepancy in pace and needs between developers and data scientists led to Kubernetes and the Cloud Native Computing Foundation initially overlooking data science. Nevertheless, Mohan noted that the pace of data engineers has increased as they explore new AI applications and workloads. Kubernetes now plays a crucial role in supporting these advancements by helping manage resources efficiently, especially considering the high cost of training large language models (LLMs) and using GPUs for AI workloads. Mohan also discussed the evolving landscape of AI frameworks and the importance of aligning business use cases with AI strategies. Alex Williams, Founder and Publisher for The New Stack, and Janikiram MSV, Principal of Janikiram & Associates and an analyst and writer for The New Stack, discusses the emergence of the LLM stack, which encompasses various components like LLMs, vector databases, embedding models, retrieval systems, read anchor models, and more. The objective of LLM observability is to ensure that users can extract desired outcomes effectively from this complex ecosystem.Similar to infrastructure observability in DevOps and SRE practices, LLM observability aims to provide insights into the LLM stack's performance. This includes monitoring metrics specific to LLMs, such as GPU/CPU usage, storage, model serving, change agents in applications, hallucinations, span traces, relevance, retrieval models, latency, monitoring, and user feedback. MSV emphasizes the importance of monitoring resource usage, model catalog synchronization with external providers like Hugging Face, vector database availability, and the inference engine's functionality. He also mentions peer companies in the LLM observability space like Datadog, New Relic, Signoz, Dynatrace, LangChain (LangSmith), Arize.ai (Phoenix), and Truera, hinting at a deeper exploration in a future episode of The New Stack Makers. Learn more from The New Stack about LLM and observability  Observability in 2024: More OpenTelemetry, Less Confusion How AI Can Supercharge Observability Next-Gen Observability: Monitoring and Analytics in Platform Engineering Join our community of newsletter subscribers to stay on top of the news and at the top of your game.
