Uniquely Familiar: A Lifetime Pouring Passion Into Guitars That Sing | A Brand Spotlight at The NAMM Show 2026 with John Page and Bryan Ray of John Page Guitars

At The NAMM Show 2026, John Page walks Sean Martin of ITSPmagazine through a hand-painted electric guitar called the Retablo. The motifs are lifted from the artwork that traditionally sits behind a cathedral altar, reimagined so the saints and icons are not from scripture but from the roots of American music. Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Muddy Waters. Howlin' Wolf. Mahalia Jackson. The canvases themselves are cut from the floorboards of an old church. It is one of the most personal guitars John Page has ever built. The conversation traces the arc of John Page Guitars, the small-batch shop John Page runs after more than 20 years at Fender, where he co-founded the legendary Custom Shop and led guitar research and development. He has now been designing and building guitars for 53 years. What gets made today at John Page Guitars is built by a small team, with John Page handling his own custom work and prototypes while a master builder works alongside him on production models. What makes the instruments different is not one big thing but a series of quiet decisions. John Page mounts the neck to the body with threaded machine inserts and machine bolts instead of standard wood screws, a coupling he believes transfers tone better between neck and body and adds overtone complexity that a conventional bolt-on simply does not produce. A flatter 12-inch radius, a reverse-angled bridge pickup that removes the ice-pick high, a vintage-feeling neck profile. Every decision serves a single goal: an instrument that sings as a complete unit. John Page describes his design philosophy in two short phrases. The first is "uniquely familiar," the idea that a guitar should feel comfortable in a player's hands and recognizable in their eyes while still being clearly its own thing. The second is "balanced asymmetry," an imbalance in which he finds a kind of perfect balance. Both show up in the offset fret markers, the body contours, and even in the restraint of the aesthetic choices that surround the Retablo's portraits. The Retablo itself is where that philosophy leaves the factory floor and becomes something closer to a reliquary. John Page had never painted portraits before. He taught himself, hand-painting each founder of American roots music onto wood reclaimed from a dismantled church, designing and building a custom bridge that routes volume and tone controls into the tailpiece so the body can carry its imagery unbroken. A full documentary exists on the making of the guitar for anyone who wants the layer-on-layer detail. When the talking is done, Bryan Ray of John Page Guitars steps in with one of the new baritone builds to let the instrument speak for itself. Every design decision John Page described is suddenly in the room, audible, as one of his guitars does exactly what he designed it to do. This is a Brand Spotlight. Welcome back to When Words Fail, Music Speaks, the show where we explore how music can lift us out of the darkest moments and give us a voice when we're feeling unheard. I'm your host, James Cox, a self‑titled “professional handicapped” host who's spent a lifetime turning personal battles with depression into a platform for healing through song.In today's episode we sit down with the enigmatic creator behind Two‑Inch Voices—Jeffrey, the man who turned a childhood nickname (“two‑inch voices”) into a solo project that refuses to be boxed into any single genre. From his early days in an experimental metal outfit (2007) and a brief stint in an acoustic‑folk trio, through the gritty DIY releases of 2016‑2018, to his recent Halloween‑themed EP Q & A, Jeffrey shares the winding, often‑lonesome road of an independent artist. We dive deep into:Musical DNA: How blues legends (Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Blind Willie Johnson, Howlin' Wolf) and folk storytellers (Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan) shape his “folk‑rock‑blues” sound, and why he's drawn to the raw honesty of Delta blues.Identity vs. Band: Why he kept the project name instead of his own, what “two‑inch voices” really means, and how that ethos keeps the focus on the music, not the ego.The Independent Struggle: The reality of creating, recording, and releasing music without a major label—budget constraints, back‑catalog mysteries, and the endless quest for the perfect record.Future Plans: A treasure trove of unreleased rock‑based tracks, possible acoustic B‑side releases, and an ambitious dream of collaborating with artists from Trombone Shorty to Willie Nelson.Life Lessons: From jam‑sessions on the streets of New Orleans to confronting anxiety on stage, Jeffrey's story is a reminder that honesty, perseverance, and a little bit of coffee can carry you through any setlist. If you've ever felt stuck in a creative rut, wondered how a single song can become a lifeline, or just love hearing raw, genre‑bending stories from a true indie trailblazer, this interview is for you.Grab your headphones, hit play, and let Jeffrey's “honest” voice guide you through the highs, lows, and the ever‑twisting corridors of the music world—because when words fail, music truly does speak.

Howard Devoto and Pete Shelley read a review of the Sex Pistols in February 1976, borrowed a car, drove to London, asked the NME where they'd find the band and were told ‘try a sex shop in the King's Road'. The events that followed changed both the culture of Manchester and the course of rock history, a story mapped out in David Nolan's excellent ‘I Swear I Was There', a book as much about the audience as the band. His theory: “If the Pistols hadn't played the Lesser Free Trade Hall … no Buzzcocks, Joy Division, Factory Records, ‘indie' scene, Smiths, Fall, Nirvana, Blur, Oasis, Radiohead or Prodigy.' As the 50th anniversary looms, he talks to us here about … … those who claimed to be there and the ones who actually were … the contrast between myth and reality … the letter Morrissey sent the NME: “Maybe the Pistols will be able to afford some clothes which don't look as though they've been slept in” … punk metaphor: Howard Devoto asking a tailor to narrow his trouser legs and being told, “there's no going back” … North/South crowd violence: “a battle with a gig breaking out in the middle” … the three reels of home-movie and the photos that turned up 36 years later … Sister Rosetta Tharpe, ‘Judas' at the Free Trade Hall, Stones In The Park and other landmark Manchester moments ... the pioneering impact of Granada TV … “if you look at Manchester now, its media, its skyscrapers, its cultural prosperity, none of that would have been happened without those Pistols gigs” … “Sheffield would have admired them, Manchester thought: we can do better!” … and various bit-part players – Tony Wilson, Peter Hook, Paul Morley, Jordan and Jon the Postman. Hon var svart, queer och ett gitarrgeni som bröt ny mark långt före Elvis Presley och Little Richard. Sister Rosetta Tharpe slog igenom på 1930‑talet med sin elgitarr och sin kraftfulla röst som förenade gospelns glöd med rockens rytm. Trots rasism, motgångar och förbjuden kärlek fortsatte hon att tänja gränser och skapa musik som inspirerade generationer av rockikoner.

The profound effect that Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Marie Knight had on contemporary music is rarely spelled out in full. There's a reason why Tharpe is heralded as the "godmother of rock ‘n' roll." Between them, they helped reshape genres and alter tastes, all in a racist, misogynistic world that rarely gave them space to show off their groundbreaking talents. That is the story now coming to @sohoplace with Marie and Rosetta, George Brant's two-hander that brings a rocking, untapped history into the present day. Stars Beverley Knight and Ntombizodwa Ndlovu sit down to chat about their time with the production, aided by director Monique Touko and movement director Kloé Dean. Hosted on Acast. Episode 4 of On The Record opens exactly as listeners now expect: however, the technology relents and the Christmas episode is officially underway. What follows is a warm, rambling, oddly moving conversation about Christmas music, memory, faith, food and survival, with plenty of laughs along the way. Michael Mackenzie declares Christmas music a minefield of bad taste, arguing passionately for carols, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Otis Redding and Silent Night—while firmly rejecting novelty songs, forced cheer and anything involving Santa “rocking.” Brian revisits his Catholic childhood as an altar boy, including midnight mass duties, Latin confusion, and the moral courage it took to tell an aunt that Sadie the Cleaning Lady was, frankly, not a great gift for a teenage boy. There are transistor radios from Liverpool, early playlists, and the dawning realisation that taste can arrive early—and stay stubbornly intact. Michael counters with one of the great Christmas stories: a white Christmas spent working illegally in the Swiss Alps, dodging passport checks, sledding home from work, eating communal meals by candlelight, and throwing snowballs under fir trees. It's nostalgic, cinematic, and only mildly incriminating. Things take a darker, funnier turn with memories of Christmas stress, maternal meltdowns, and the single most divisive festive dish ever discussed on the podcast: mango pie with gelatin—described as having the texture of a stuntman landing on cardboard boxes. The episode winds down with gift ideas, band-of-the-year talk, the weaponisation of Santa for child behaviour management, and a surprisingly tender close as the year ends and real life intrudes. It's funny. It's nostalgic. It's messy. And it's the most On The Record Christmas you could hope for. This week on Friends Talking Nerdy, Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd dust off the record player and go head-to-head once again in The Musicwed Game — the game where friendship meets finely tuned musical instincts. Each picks five songs they believe the other will love, and whoever racks up the most correct guesses earns bragging rights as the reigning music whisperer. The playlist this round is as eclectic as ever — a sonic road trip through dusty border towns, cosmic dance floors, and smoky backroom stages. You'll hear talk of the swaggering “Canción del Mariachi” from Antonio Banderas and Los Lobos, the bittersweet twang of Glen Campbell's “Galveston,” and the glitter-soaked groove of Ace Frehley's “New York Groove.” From the haunting “This Mess We're In” (PJ Harvey featuring Thom Yorke) to the gospel fire of Sister Rosetta Tharpe's “Strange Things Happening Every Day,” every track sparks stories, laughter, and passionate debate.Rounding out the mix are Orville Peck's outlaw spin on “Born This Way (The Country Road Version),” the late-90s alt-pop gem “F.N.T.” by Semisonic, the heartfelt lift of Patty Griffin's “Top of the World,” the fiery “Malagueña Salerosa” by CHINGÓN, and the introspective “Just By Myself” from Greg Brown.Whether you're a die-hard music nerd or just love hearing two friends geek out with gusto, this episode hits all the right notes — nostalgia, discovery, and a few good-natured arguments about what makes a song perfectly Tim or undeniably Aubrey.

Hear interviews with members of the cast and creative team behind the Indianapolis Repertory Theatre's production of Marie and Rosetta —including actors Cherish Love, Jaela Cheeks-Lomax, and music director Morgan E. Stevenson.  Marie and Rosetta, written by George Brant, explores the powerful artistic partnership between gospel music legends Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Marie Knight. The production runs at the Indianapolis Repertory Theatre from October 28 through November 23.  Born in Arkansas in 1915, Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a trailblazing guitarist and vocalist whose music fused the ecstatic spirit of gospel with the rhythmic drive of rhythm and blues — paving the way for rock and roll pioneers like Chuck Berry and Little Richard. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018, Tharpe is now widely celebrated as the Godmother of Rock and Roll. Known for her powerful voice, magnetic stage presence, and groundbreaking mastery of the electric guitar, Tharpe broke barriers as one of the first gospel artists to cross into secular music — achieving mainstream success throughout the 1930s and 1940s.

About ‘Marie & Rosetta'   Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the roof-raising ‘godmother of rock ‘n' roll', influenced countless musicians from Elvis to Johnny Cash. This sparkling, intimate portrait of Rosetta and her beloved singing partner, Marie Knight, restores these forgotten musical heroines to the spotlight as one of the most remarkable and revolutionary duos in music history. Mississippi, 1946. Sister Rosetta has changed the face of gospel music with her exuberant, electric guitar-playing style. Shunned by strait-laced church folk for performing in nightclubs and glorying in rhythm and blues, she's persuaded the saintly young singer Marie to join her on a tour of the segregated southern States. But first she has to convert Marie's pure Sunday sound into something that has just a little more swing… Written by George Brant & Directed by Monique Touko Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the roof-raising ‘godmother of rock ‘n' roll', influenced countless musicians from Elvis to Johnny Cash. Sister Rosetta Tharpe was known as the ‘godmother of rock and roll' and influenced countless musicians from Elvis to Johnny Cash. Now Olivier Award-winning performer Beverley Knight is playing Sister Rosetta in a new production, Marie and Rosetta, which has just opened at the Rose Theatre in London. It tells the story of Rosetta and her singing partner, Marie Knight, described as one of the most remarkable and revolutionary duos in music history. Beverley joins Nuala McGovern in the Woman's Hour studio to discuss how the show hopes to restore these forgotten musical heroines to the spotlight. The Government has announced that care workers will no longer be recruited from overseas as part of a crackdown on visas for lower-skilled workers. The care sector has criticised the plans as "cruel" and "short-sighted". To discuss this and what good care looks like, Nuala is joined by Gavin Edwards, Head of Social Care at Unison, and care worker Kathryn Faulke, author of the memoir Every Kind of People: A Journey into the Heart of Care Work. It's thought that around 3 to 4% of people in the UK, that's one in 20, have ADHD - Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. However many women still remain undiagnosed for decades of their lives, with those in their 40s, 50s and 60s only now discovering they have it for the first time. Jo Beazley was diagnosed with ADHD just two years ago at the age of 49, after her symptoms worsened during the menopause. She joins Nuala along with Amanda Kirby, the former chair of the ADHD Foundation and a professor in the field of neurodiversity. This week we'll be hearing different perspectives on the recent Supreme Court ruling on the definition of a woman under the Equality Act, and how it could and should be interpreted on the ground. The Equality and Human Rights Commission has issued interim guidance that, in places open to the public, trans women shouldn't use women's facilities such as toilets. Today Nuala speaks to Robin Moira White, a barrister who specialises in taking discrimination cases, and who is also a trans woman. Although this program is strictly education-based, and we don't sell products or produce any notable revenue from these episodes, they don't see what we do as fair use. Once upon a time, there was a girl with a song in her heart. Her name was Sister Rosetta Tharpe - a guitar-playing, gospel-singing legend whose unique style and stage-presence inspired the greatest rock musicians of the last century. She is known as the godmother of rock n' roll and was posthumously inducted into the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. [This episode originally aired September 2021.] About the Narrator Kateri Bluford is an American singer, born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, who gained national and international acclaim after appearing on Season 2 of The Four starring Sean Combs, DJ Khaled, Megan Trainor and host Fergie. Bluford captivated audiences with her powerful rendition of Tasha Cobbs “I'm Getting Ready” and Celine Dion's legendary Grammy Award winning song “Because You Loved Me”. As a rising star, the young artist stays true to her deeply rooted faith and the inspiration of her mentors Bishop Darrell and Pastor Pamela Hines. There is a divine power that resonates when Bluford performs that harkens to her Gospel roots, something she embraces in the entirety of her life. “I'm on a mission to heal the world” commented Kateri, who has struggled over the years with her own identity and self- confidence. There is power in music and Kateri Bluford is on a trajectory of success and transformation. Kateri Bluford also toured with Jonathan Mcreynolds this past spring and summer of 2019.     Credits This podcast is a production of Rebel Girls and is based on the book series Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls. Yola is a singer/songwriter and actress. She released her solo debut album in 2019, which was nominated for 4 Grammys, including Best New Artist and Best Americana Album, and Rolling Stone named it one of the best country albums of the year. But the thing is, Yola's music career wasn't new, and her background wasn't in country music. She's from Bristol in the UK, and starting back in the early 2000s, she was a vocalist recording tracks for DJs and electronic music producers. In January 2025, Yola put out an EP called My Way. And as you'll hear her explain in this episode, a lot of her new music is motivated by wanting to assert her identity beyond the Americana and country music boundaries. In addition to her music, she's also acting – she played Sister Rosetta Tharpe in the 2022 film Elvis, and she starred on Broadway in the musical Hadestown. For this episode, I talked to Yola about her song “Symphony,” along with co-writer and co-producer Sean Douglas. Yola and Sean trace the journey of the song “Symphony,” and, along with it, Yola traces her own journey, too.For more info, visit songexploder.net/yola.

The Record Store Day Podcast with Paul Myers

Joe Boyd has had many job descriptions over the course of his nearly sixty-year career in music, and there was simply no way to cover everything in this conversation. That said, Paul and Joe focus on Boyd's important new book, And The Roots of Rhythm Remain: A Journey Through Global Music, and themes of cultural cross-pollination in music, the birth of hip hop and ska, the reason Hitler spared the life of virtuoso Roma guitarist Django Reinhardt, what happened with Nick Drake, and Boyd's phenomenal earlier book, the memoir, White Bicycles: Making Music in the 1960s.  As a music producer, Boyd has delivered records by Nick Drake, Pink Floyd, R.E.M., Taj Mahal, Fairport Convention, Richard and Linda Thompson, Sandy Denny. He tour-managed European dates for Muddy Waters, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and was a production manager at the 1965 Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals, before flying off to open Elektra Records' UK office in London where he and John Hopkins opened the UFO club, giving a psychedelic home to Pink Floyd and others.  In 1971 he moved to Los Angeles to work for Warner Brothers Films (Deliverance, A Clockwork Orange, and the documentary Jimi Hendrix). In 1979, he worked for Lorne Michaels' film company, Broadway Pictures, and the following year, launched his own label, Hannibal Records, releasing works by John Cale, Richard Thompson and more, while bringing global artists such as ¡Cubanismo!, Toumani Diabaté, Ali Farka Touré, Trio Bulgarka, and Songhai, to western audiences.
