A major housing and retail development proposal in Virginia threatens to pave over the birthplace of one of America's most influential historical leader. Paramount Chief Powhatan is the notable late-1500s leader who united local tribes into what became known as the Powhatan Confederacy to face the first waves of English settlers. He was the being father of Matoaka, also known as Pocahontas. The nonprofit organization Preservation Virginia placed the site on its 2026 list of most endangered places. Sponsor Link:To get our secial NordVPN offer and save a heap of money, Click HereIn this milestone episode — one away from our 100th — Anna and Avery cover six extraordinary stories: the Pentagon's unprecedented release of 162 declassified UFO/UAP files; SpaceX firing all 33 Raptor V3 engines on the Super Heavy booster ahead of Starship Flight 12; tomorrow's CRS-34 cargo launch to the ISS; JWST's breathtaking new portrait of cosmic buckyballs inside a dying star; never-before-seen mineral maps of the Moon's far side created from Artemis 2 mission photographs; and the American Meteor Society's growing alarm over an unexplained spike in large fireball events across the globe.   Stories Covered 1. Pentagon Releases 162 Declassified UAP Files (May 8, 2026) •       The Pentagon launched a public portal at war.gov/UFO on Friday 8 May, releasing 162 declassified files on Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena. •       Files include 120 PDF documents, 28 videos, and 14 images — spanning sightings from the 1940s to 2025. •       The PURSUE program (Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters) will release additional files on a rolling basis every few weeks. •       The files show no evidence of extraterrestrial contact or government cover-up; they are classified as 'unresolved cases.' •       Notable items include footage of a football-shaped UAP near Japan, a white orb over Syria, and Apollo 17 lunar imagery showing unexplained lights.   2. SpaceX Starship V3 Super Heavy — Full 33-Engine Static Fire (May 7, 2026) •       SpaceX completed the first successful full-duration, full-thrust static fire of the Super Heavy V3 booster at Starbase, Texas, on 7 May. •       All 33 Raptor V3 engines fired simultaneously — the most powerful ground test of any rocket first stage in history. •       Previous tests on 15 April ended early due to ground equipment issues; the 7 May test went the full duration. •       The Starship V3 Ship upper stage also completed its static fire in April — both vehicle halves now cleared for flight. •       SpaceX is targeting 15 May for Starship Flight 12, a suborbital test mission. Starship is central to NASA's Artemis lunar landing system.   3. SpaceX CRS-34 — ISS Resupply Launch (12 May 2026) •       Launch: 7:16 PM EDT, Tuesday 12 May from SLC-40, Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. •       Cargo: approximately 6,500 pounds, including scientific experiments, food, equipment, and crew supplies. •       Autonomous docking scheduled: ~9:50 AM EDT, Thursday 14 May, at Harmony module's forward port. •       Key payloads: Laplace (planet formation dust study), STORIE (space weather / ring current monitoring), wooden bone scaffold (osteoporosis research), and red blood cell / spleen change investigation. •       Watch live on NASA+, Amazon Prime, YouTube, and NASA's website from 7:00 PM EDT on 12 May.   4. JWST Reveals the Birthplace of Cosmic Buckyballs — Planetary Nebula Tc 1 •       Western University astronomers returned to planetary nebula Tc 1 (10,000+ light-years away, constellation Ara) using JWST's Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI). •       First detected buckyballs (buckminsterfullerene / C60 molecules) in space here in 2010 using Spitzer; now JWST reveals the full structure for the first time. •       Buckyballs are concentrated in a thin spherical shell around the central white dwarf — arranged like 'one giant buckyball.' •       JWST imagery also reveals an unexplained upside-down question mark feature at the nebula's heart. •       Current theoretical models don't fully explain the buckyballs' observed infrared emissions — multiple new papers are in preparation. •       Buckyballs found in meteorites on Earth; understanding their space origins provides clues about organic chemistry and possibly life's building blocks.   5. Artemis 2 — Far-Side Moon Images (Published May 2026) •       Astrophotographer Andrew McCarthy collaborated pre-mission with Commander Reid Wiseman to plan detailed lunar photography during the Artemis 2 flyby. •       McCarthy's image-stacking technique — applied to Wiseman's far-side photographs taken during the 6 April lunar flyby — has produced unprecedented colour mineral maps of the far side. •       Colours reveal mineral composition variations (browns, blues, reds) not visible to the naked eye — described as 'cyborg vision' for the Moon. •       NASA has released the full Artemis 2 photo archive: 12,217 images now publicly available. •       Full archive: NASA astronaut photography public archive (link in episode resources).   6. The 2026 Fireball Surge — AMS Analysis (Published May 2026) •       The American Meteor Society reports an anomalous spike in large fireball events in Q1 2026 that 'warrants serious investigation.' •       Total Q1 event count (2,046) is only marginally above historical norms; the anomaly is in the SIZE of events — the largest fireballs are happening at roughly double the historical rate. •       March 2026: 40+ major events, including a 3,229-witness fireball over Europe (8 Mar), an Ohio sonic boom explosion (17 Mar), and a meteorite through a Houston roof (21 Mar). •       79% of Q1's high-witness fireball events produced confirmed sonic booms — a strong physical indicator of large, dense incoming objects. •       Anthelion sporadic source (opposite the Sun) is producing roughly double its normal activity; activity concentrated in a single 1,000-square-degree patch. •       Ruling out explanations: not a new shower, not seasonal variation alone, not reporting bias. •       AMS calling for expanded automated all-sky camera networks and better cross-referencing with radar, infrasound, and satellite data.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/astronomy-daily-space-news-updates--5648921/support.Sponsor Details:Ensure your online privacy by using NordVPN. The far right is becoming more visible globally, including in Australia, through online activity and public protests involving extremist nationalist groups and neo-Nazi figures. But experts say understanding this rise requires looking at its deeper history. One key moment often pointed to is the 2017 Charlottesville rally in the US, where white supremacists, neo-Nazis and counter-protesters clashed violently, leaving one woman dead and many injured. In her book Charlottesville: An American Story, historian Deborah Baker examines not just the event, but the long history of racism and political tension that led to it. In this bonus episode of The Briefing, Helen Smith speaks with Baker about why Charlottesville is seen as a turning point for the modern far right. Anglotopia Podcast: Episode 93 – 600 Years in One House – Magnus Throckmorton on Coughton Court & Its Extraordinary History

Anglotopia Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 24, 2026 42:53

In this episode of the Anglotopia Podcast, Jonathan Thomas is joined by Magnus Birch Throckmorton, the latest custodian of Coughton Court — a Tudor manor house in Warwickshire that has been home to the Throckmorton family for over 600 years. Coughton Court is one of England's most historically charged houses: its great gatehouse was built during the reign of Henry VIII, its walls conceal a double priest hole from the Reformation, and on the night the Gunpowder Plot collapsed in 1605, it was the very house where the plotters' families waited for news. Magnus walks Jonathan through six centuries of survival, faith, and family — from Sir George Throckmorton's audacious confrontation with Henry VIII over Anne Boleyn's marriage, to the sacking of the house during the English Civil War, to the remarkable women of Coughton who kept it alive through every crisis. Magnus also shares what it's like to raise his young children in this living, breathing house, what he and his wife Imogen have introduced since taking over direct management in March 2026, and why American Anglophiles should make Coughton a priority stop on any Midlands itinerary. Links Coughton Court — coughtoncourt.co.uk Historic Houses Association — historichouses.org Harvington Hall (mentioned for priest holes) — harvingtonhall.com Doddington Hall, Lincolnshire (mentioned) — doddingtonhall.com Shakespeare's Birthplace, Stratford-upon-Avon — shakespeare.org.uk Friends of Anglotopia ⠀ Takeaways The Throckmorton family has lived at Coughton Court since 1409 — predating Columbus's voyage to America — making it one of the longest unbroken family occupancies of any historic house in England. Sir George Throckmorton, who built the great gatehouse around 1530, was audacious enough to confront Henry VIII directly over his marriage to Anne Boleyn — and somehow survived by throwing himself on the king's mercy. Coughton Court has a double priest hole: a decoy chamber above a hidden second chamber, designed so that searchers would find the first and assume it empty, never discovering the one below. The Throckmorton family were connected to — but not directly implicated in — the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. The plotters' wives and Father Garnet waited at Coughton for news of whether the plan had succeeded or failed. During the English Civil War, Coughton was sacked and plundered, leaving it in a state of ruin that took generations to rebuild. Among the most remarkable objects in the house are a chemise believed to have been worn by Mary Queen of Scots at her execution in 1587, and a cape attributed to Catherine of Aragon and her ladies-in-waiting. The award-winning gardens were designed from scratch in 1991 by Magnus's mother for his grandmother, including a rose labyrinth deliberately full of dead ends, designed to slow visitors down and make them appreciate the colours and scents. Since taking over direct management from the National Trust in March 2026, Magnus and Imogen have introduced a café using hyper-local producers, a charity bookshop, artist residencies, workshops from willow weaving to botanical pottery, Tai Chi, yoga, a monthly supper club, and a summer programme of outdoor theatre. Coughton is just 20 minutes from Stratford-upon-Avon and easily reachable from the Cotswolds — making it a natural addition to any Shakespeare Country itinerary. The property includes two churches — one Catholic, one Protestant — with Throckmorton ancestors buried in both, a quirk that speaks directly to the family's extraordinary journey through five centuries of English religious history. ⠀ Soundbites "It's incredibly exciting — quite scary that your ancestors are looking down at you judging every step of the way. They've got the lovely portraits as you walk up the stairs, so you can't get away from them." — Magnus on being the latest custodian of Coughton. "It's still a family home. It's not a statue in time. It's still breathing, it's still living, it's still evolving — and it really tells the story of one family who've stayed true to being Catholic the whole way through." — Magnus on what makes Coughton different. "He said it is wrong to have meddled with both mother and sister — to which the king replied, it was never with the mother. So Sir George obviously had a nature of being able to push the boundaries." — Magnus on Sir George Throckmorton's confrontation with Henry VIII. "The Throckmortons were not directly implicated in the Gunpowder Plot. They were one step away. None of the plotters had a Throckmorton name — which is probably the reason we're here today." — Magnus on the family's Gunpowder Plot connection. "We have a chemise believed to have been worn by Mary Queen of Scots at her beheading. There's a Latin inscription saying Mary Queen of Scots at her execution on the 8th of February 1587. She was an incredibly tall lady, so it is a very long chemise." — Magnus on one of the house's most extraordinary objects. "It was a thousand guinea bet — shear two sheep and wear the coat between sunrise and sunset. They shorn the sheep, wove it, dyed it, and it was worn at the feast that evening. The biggest travesty was the two sheep were served at the banquet." — Magnus on the famous Throckmorton Coat wager of 1811. "The ladies are the ones who maintain and keep these houses going. They put their life and soul into it and the character of it. My grandmother was one of the first female QCs in the UK. These women are sometimes forgotten about in the grand stories." — Magnus on the women of Coughton. "We are not necessarily close to anywhere, but we're never that far away. You can get to anywhere within an hour and a half — and we're 20 minutes from the Cotswolds, 20 minutes from Stratford." — Magnus on Coughton's surprisingly central location. "Some people come to the UK expecting these houses to be the new Downton Abbey. There is no grandeur here. This is a living and breathing family house — we'll take you on our story, and you'll get an insight into what it's like living at Coughton." — Magnus on the personal experience he and Imogen offer visitors. "My daughter is very good at watering on a Saturday. Mainly she waters the paths, not the plants — which is probably a thing, otherwise the gardeners would tell us off." — Magnus on raising children at Coughton Court. ⠀ Chapters 00:00 Introduction — Jonathan sets the scene at Coughton Court and introduces Magnus Throckmorton 01:58 A New Chapter Begins — Coughton's March 2026 reopening under Magnus and Imogen's direct management 02:19 600 Years of Continuity — What that extraordinary length of connection to one place feels like from the inside 03:11 Raising Children at Coughton — Hector, Isabella, hide-and-seek, and the priest hole problem 05:01 What Is Coughton Court? — A living Tudor family home, its history and why it matters 07:09 Sir George Throckmorton & Henry VIII — The courtier who dared oppose the king's marriage to Anne Boleyn 09:07 The Reformation and Catholic Persecution — Fines, recusancy, and the double priest hole 11:35 The Gunpowder Plot of 1605 — How Coughton became the waiting room for the plotters' families 14:30 The English Civil War — Sacked and plundered, and the long road to rebuilding 15:32 The Women of Coughton — The overlooked figures who kept the house alive across the centuries 17:00 WWII and the Speaker of the House — Coughton's designation as a wartime safe house 17:38 First Impressions — What an American visitor sees walking through the gates for the first time 18:22 Where Is Coughton Court? — Geography, distances, and how it fits into a Midlands itinerary 19:40 Must-See Highlights — The panelled dining room, Mary Queen of Scots' chemise, Catherine of Aragon's cape, and the Throckmorton Coat 23:47 The Award-Winning Gardens — Designed in 1991, the rose labyrinth, and Imogen's new influence 26:08 Two Churches, One Estate — The Protestant and Catholic churches and the ancestors buried in both 28:01 Taking Over from the National Trust — What it means to personally open the doors again 29:46 New Ventures — The café, bookshop, workshops, artist residencies, supper club and more 31:55 Coughton as a Community Hub — The village fête, dementia awareness days, and the volunteer team 33:19 The Historic Houses Network — What joining has meant for advice, connections, and visibility 34:43 Coughton's USP — One family, one faith, 600 years, and gardens that change with every season 36:31 Why Americans Should Visit — The personal touch, the family access, and the Shakespeare Country connection 40:37 Summer 2026 at Coughton — Roses, herbaceous borders, outdoor theatre, and very good ice cream 41:43 Wrap-Up — Opening hours, website link, and how to find Coughton Court Video Version

Longtime GoNOMAD contributor Susmita Sengupta, a New Yorker with a sharp eye for the city's past, takes us on a walking journey through the Financial District — revealing the colonial streets, early American landmarks, and sacred spaces that shaped the beginnings of the United States. We begin at the New York Stock Exchange, but instead of watching the crowds, Susmita leads us to the Federal Hall National Memorial, the “Birthplace of American Government,” where George Washington took the oath of office in 1789. The Doric columns, the bronze Washington statue, and the preserved balcony inside all bring the early republic vividly to life.Just steps away stands Trinity Church Wall Street, a Gothic masterpiece and the oldest public building still in use in Manhattan. Inside, its stained glass windows glow above the grave of Alexander Hamilton, one of America's most influential Founding Fathers. We continue to St. Paul's Chapel, the Georgian-era sanctuary where Washington prayed after his inauguration, before wandering toward Stone Street, a cobblestone lane dating back to the Dutch colonial era — built by enslaved Africans and now lined with lively restaurants.Susmita then guides us to Fraunces Tavern Museum, a Revolutionary War landmark where patriots gathered and history unfolded. Across the street, she discovers the preserved remains of 17th‑century New Amsterdam, including the 1667 foundations of the Lovelace Tavern, visible beneath glass panels in the sidewalk. The journey concludes at the powerful and moving African Burial Ground National Monument, the largest colonial-era burial site for enslaved and free Africans in North America. Rediscovered in 1991, it now stands as a solemn memorial and educational center honoring more than 400 individuals whose labor helped build New York City. This episode is a thoughtful walk through the origins of the city — a reminder that beneath the financial capital of the world lies a deep, complex, and essential American story.Written by GoNOMAD contributor Susmita Sengupta.SUBSCRIBE & LISTENExplore more than 260 episodes of the GoNOMAD Travel Podcast and discover new places every week.Subscribe to the GoNOMAD Travel Podcast: Visit Voyascape for more great travel podcasts: https://www.voyascape.comRead more travel stories on GoNOMAD: https://www.gonomad.comMentioned in this episode:Check out the Smart Travel PodcastThis week's show is supported by the new Smart Travel Podcast. rWotD Episode 3268: Prince Edward Island Welcome to random Wiki of the Day, your journey through Wikipedia's vast and varied content, one random article at a time. The random article for Wednesday, 15 April 2026, is Prince Edward Island.Prince Edward Island is an island province of Canada. It is the smallest province by both land area and population, but has the highest population density in Canada. The island has several nicknames: "Garden of the Gulf", "Birthplace of Confederation" and "Cradle of Confederation". Its capital and largest city is Charlottetown. It is one of the three Maritime provinces and one of the four Atlantic provinces.Historically, the island has formed an integral part of the Mi'kmaw homeland, Mi'kma'ki, comprising one part of the district Epekwitk aq Piktuk (also spelled Epegwitg aq Pigtug, lit. 'PEI and Pictou'). In 1604, Epekwitk was colonized by the French as part of the colony of Acadia, where it became known as Isle St-Jean (St. John's Island). It was later ceded to the British at the conclusion of the Seven Years' War in 1763 and became part of the colony of Nova Scotia. In 1769, St. John's Island became its own British colony and its name was changed to Prince Edward Island (PEI) in 1798. PEI hosted the Charlottetown Conference in 1864 to discuss a union of the Maritime provinces; however, the conference became the first in a series of meetings which led to Canadian Confederation on July 1, 1867. Prince Edward Island initially balked at Confederation but, facing bankruptcy from the Land Question and construction of a railroad, joined as Canada's seventh province on July 1, 1873.According to Statistics Canada, the province of Prince Edward Island had 182,508 residents in 2025. Farming is central to the island's economy; it produces 25% of Canada's potatoes. Other important industries include fisheries, tourism, aerospace, biotechnology, information technology and renewable energy. As Prince Edward Island is one of Canada's older settled areas, its population still reflects the origins of its earliest settlers, with Acadian, Scottish, Irish, and English surnames being dominant.Prince Edward Island is located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, about ten kilometres (6.2 mi) across the Northumberland Strait from both Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. It is about 200 kilometres (120 mi) north of Halifax and 600 kilometres (370 mi) east of Quebec City. It has a land area of 5,686.03 square kilometres (2,195.39 sq mi), and is the 104th-largest island in the world and Canada's 23rd-largest island. It is the only Canadian province consisting entirely of islands. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:36 UTC on Wednesday, 15 April 2026.For the full current version of the article, see Prince Edward Island on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Danielle.

As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our nation, Cleveland has a pretty loud reason to join the party: We are the birthplace of Rock & Roll. In the 1950s, our city played a pivotal role in launching a new global musical movement that many credit to DJ Alan Freed, who coined the phrase "rock & roll." Since then, countless iconic rock moments shook the region, from the Beatles first concert in 1964 at Municipal Stadium, to David Bowie's 1972 Ziggy Stardust U.S. debut. Ohio is also home to some notable names in rock, including The Black Keys, Nine Inch Nails, Filter, Devo, and Dave Grohl-to name a few.rnrnIn 1995, Cleveland's legacy as the rock capital of the world was cemented with the opening of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on the shores of Lake Erie. For decades, the Rock Hall has honored the genre's trailblazers, and immersed its visitors in the history of rock music.rnrnToday, Cuyahoga County's live music scene truly punches above its weight, boasting a total economic output of $1.17 billion. At the same time, only 25% of independent music venues were able to turn a profit. This is well below a national average of 36%, but just above Ohio's average where just 1 in 5 Ohio independent music venues were profitable. Rising costs for artists, venues, and consumers have stretched budgets across the board. Adding in the rise of Artificial Intelligence, and changing consumer tastes, today's music scene is facing its share of challenges, but also opportunities.rnrnHow can we ensure the heart of rock and roll still beats in Cleveland?
