Hi, friends, and welcome back to our series, "On Becoming: The Art and Craft of Personal Storytelling." In this series, we take a close look at personal essays written by real students, talking about why we love them, what makes them work, and how they came to be.  In this episode, we break down an essay that is one of my new favorites. It's conceptually rich because even though it's on molding clay, it could be considered any of these montage types: I love/I know, Essence Objects, Skills/Superpower, Identity, Home, or Uncommon extracurricular activity. That's not a goal I'm suggesting you pursue, by the way, just interesting to note. To discuss it, I'm joined by Calvin Pickett, the Director of Essay Coaching here at CEG. Calvin has been a college essay coach for more than eight years, and a lover of words and stories since he can remember. Calvin studied English Literature at Vassar before earning his master's in Secondary English Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. He believes in the potential for this college essay writing process to be transformational for students, and loves helping them see and shape their own stories in ways that empower self-knowledge and self confidence and lead to exciting college opportunities.  If you're a craft nerd at heart (the kind of person who watches behind-the-scenes footage twice), I hope you'll feel right at home.  We hope you enjoy!   Play-by-Play:  2:16 – Calvin sets context for the essay and the student who wrote it  3:40 – Calvin reads the essay, "Molding Clay"   9:23 – How did the author come up with her topic?  11:21 – Calvin and Ethan discuss the first paragraph and how it grounds the reader 14:31 – How does the author use insight in her second paragraph to convey details that might not be elsewhere in her application? 18:49 – How do the author's core values guide her metaphors and examples throughout the essay? 20:53 – What is a montage essay and how did the author decide on which parts to include in the final draft?  23:47 – What is the balance between "showing" or "telling" in a college essay?  29:26 – How does the author's unique voice help her stand out?  32:52 – How can students weave in parts of a challenge or narrative into their montage essay? 38:31 – How important is a strong closing paragraph? 42:43 – What are some key concepts from this essay that students can apply to their own writing? 48:31 – Why might students choose to avoid AI in the college essay writing process?  51:40 – Closing thoughts    Resources: "Molding Clay" Essay College Essay Guy's Personal Statement Resources College Essay Guy's College Application Hub

As the sun goes down on a glorious spring evening on the western edge of Europe, Elliot Williams is joined by Jenny List for a look at the week in all things Hackaday. First up: Hackaday Europe tickets are on sale! Bad luck folks, the early bird tickets disappeared in an instant, but regular ones are still available for now. We're really looking forward to making our way to Lecco for a weekend of hacks, and it would be great to see you there too. Then we have a new feature for the podcast, the Hackaday Mailbag. This week's contribution comes from [Kenny], a longtime friend of Hackaday and probably our most regular conference attendee. To the hacks, and we have some good ones. An air hockey robot might not seem like a challenge, but the engineering which went into [BasementBuilds'] one proves it's not a job for the faint hearted. Then we look at compression molding of recycled plastic using 3D-printed molds, something that seems surprisingly accessible and we'd like to try, too. We've got a new DOS, a 3D-printed zipper repair, the IPv4 replacement we didn't get, and the mind-bending logic of ternary computing. It's one of those weeks where the quick hacks could all deserve their own in-depth look, but perhaps the stand-outs are and Arduino style compiler that includes the source code compressed within the binary, and a beautifully-done revival of a 1980s brick cellphone as a modern 5G unit. Finally in the longer reads we've got an examination of wired versus Bluetooth headphones -- we're both in the wired camp -- and a look back at the age of free dialup. As is so often the case, the experience there differed between Brits and Americans. Anyway, enjoy the episode, and we have another week to look forward to.

Performance: Stiffer than previous iterations with better gingival control and less "over-bulking," significantly reducing finishing and polishing time. Essential Accessory: QwikStrips(specifically the Red and White versions) for breaking contacts before matrix placement. Listener Discount: Use code VERYDENTAL8TON at Bioclear for 15% off your order (includes courses and products). Tech Review: The Shining 3D "Elf" Scanner Purchased through CAD-Ray, this new scanner is making waves for its form factor. Size: Comparable to a curing light or intraoral camera; it plugs directly into USBC with no external power brick. Speed: Extremely fast full-arch scans with high accuracy on soft tissue (ideal for removable cases). Ease of Use: "Plug and play" installation with immediate functionality, even for those used to the Medit ecosystem. It's episode 300! Host Adrian and Sofeast head of NPD Paul Adams dig into IK ratings, what they measure (impact energy in joules), why they matter for real-world product abuse (drops, kicks, tool strikes), and how to connect use-case, environment, materials, and system-level design choices (wall thickness, ribs, radii, gate location) to hit targets like IK06–IK10. You'll hear practical examples (from light switches to job-site drills), polymer options (PP, HIPS, ABS, PC/ABS blends), and environment trade-offs (temperature, UV, chemicals, cost) so your spec says more than “make it rugged.”   Episode Sections: 00:12 – Introduction: designing for toughness via IK rating 01:58 – IK vs IP: ingress ≠ impact toughness 05:16 – What is IK? •The Family burst on the scene in the early 90's, with their debut album released by Kirk Franklin June 1993. This was also the debut album by Franklin in collaboration with his seventeen-voice formed choir, The Family.• This unique collection of individual singers gave birth to what we now know as Urban Contemporary Gospel Music. Itwas their unmistakable vocal style and flair that became ‘the sound' of the 1990's and early 2000's. Formerly known as Kirk Franklin & The Family, this iconic group lit up the charts and toured the world collecting multiple Grammy, Stellar, NAACP, & Dove Awards along the way. Their vocals were the backdrop of hits such as "Silver & Gold", "The Reason Why We Sing" and so many others.•The Sound of Gospel Music has evolved over the years, and from their days touring the country as Kirk Franklin & the Family, this aggregation of powerful singers has always been at the front of the pack! Seemingly lost in the ever-changing landscape of the who's who of Gospel music, they are now BACK toremind the world that JESUS is still the reason why they sing, just as their very 1st crossover hit song proclaimed many years ago!•Their current single ‘Jesus (I Love You Lord Today)' canbe heard on the brand-new chart-topping soundtrack from the Love Mountain film.•The Family's newest project “Together Forever” is dropping October 3, 2025 and will be available on all digital streaming outlets.••Please send an email to Let's Talk: Gospel Music Gold  sharing your thoughts about this show segment; also, if you have any suggestions of future guests you would like to hear on the show. Watch the news or browse the internet for long enough, and you'll naturally wonder what hope remains for us. From political corruption and misinformation to violence and oppression, this world seems lost and broken beyond repair. But in the Old Testament book of Isaiah (ch. 60-66), God shared His vision of a more hopeful future in which captives will be set free, darkness will give way to light, and those who mourn will be comforted. At The Story, we believe that God's promises remain as true as ever today and that His new world is still on the way. That's why, even though we see this world as it is, we hold fast to the hope we have in Jesus Christ. Because of his life, death, and resurrection, the best is yet to come. Join us for five Sundays starting April 27 as we explore Isaiah 60-66 and why the promises of God are worth the wait!
