Have you ever felt like what you are known for does not fit you anymore? Or maybe you feel like it is time to change your professional focus, but you question whether you have the credentials or whether people will take seriously the shifts you want to make.So many of us experience angst when we want to change things up in our work and life.We change as we move through life. Change is part of our developmental life cycle. And when we change, our work and the businesses we run also change as a result. But there is immense pressure to stay on a linear path in our careers and businesses that just doesn't match up with the fact of our dynamic and ever-changing lives. And our mental wellbeing suffers from the lack of understanding of how we grow and change personally, which in turn impacts how we lead ourselves, others, and our businesses. We need to normalize and create better supports for these inevitable seasons of growth and the grief and vulnerability that come with them.Today's guest is a longtime friend and colleague who recently announced that she had shut down her business so that she could shift her focus away from what she had been known for her entire career to something new.Brigitte Lyons founded Podcast Ally, the agency where she spent her days focusing on the strategic direction of the company, clearing the way for a fully remote team to the deep work that drove the business forward. Brigitte recently announced that she shut down her company, and at the time of recording, reached an agreement to sell the brand and IP she built at Podcast Ally. She has an extensive background in public relations, working in agencies and also running her own PR business.Listen to the full episode to hear: Why Brigitte worked through the impulse to burn it all down and gave herself space to fully consider closing her business How Brigitte realized that she loved her business and her team, but could take or leave the work How Brigitte came to the realization that her company no longer fit her priorities and lifestyle Why it was important to Brigitte to be transparent with her employees as she was deciding the future of the company How Brigitte built a team that stuck with her through the process of deciding to close Why it's important to understand the distinction between what you're passionate about and what you're good at Learn more about Brigitte Lyons:Connect with Brigitte on LinkedInLearn more about Rebecca: rebeccaching.com Work With Rebecca Sign up for the weekly Unburdened Leader Email Resources: Erik Erikson Dare to Lead - Brené Brown EP 85: Team Habits: Redefining Workplace Dynamics with Charlie Gilkey Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, Gabrielle Zevin Janelle Monáe, Jidenna - Yoga  Barbie Star Wars

Doing more and inevitably making things more complex is the main tool we've been trained to use. This leads to all sorts of predictable challenges, though—challenges like the ones I talked about last week with Brigitte Lyons & Sophy Dale—things like scope creep, lack of traction, unsustainable working hours, and less revenue. It can also lead to leaky boundaries, resentment, anxiety, relationship troubles, and, yes, burnout. If you identified with their stories and the consequences of Brigitte & Sophy’s more complex businesses, keep listening. This week, we're talking about what they did to simplify and the incredible results they've created. And if you're wondering whether this could be the problem you're experiencing... that you might have made things harder and more complex than they needed to be... but you're not quite sure yet... I'd be willing to go out on a limb and say, "Yep, that's probably true." Today's conversation should give you hope. Alright, let's dive into how Brigitte & Sophy actually restructured things, how doing business is different today, and what the results have been—hint: they're both making more money. Today, we're kicking off both a series on simplifying and a set of two episodes with businesses owners who have direct experience with dramatically simplifying their businesses—and in turn, creating immense growth. Brigitte Lyons is the founder of Podcast Ally, a PR agency specializing in getting experts and idea people booked on podcasts. Sophy Dale is a copywriting mentor, messaging coach, and brand storyteller who helps coaches, designers, and course-creators write compelling copy. Both Brigitte and Sophy know what it's like to run complicated, bloated businesses. And both of them figured out what the real problem was they wanted to solve. For Brigitte, it was scope creep that caused her to always be reinventing systems and getting involved in projects she shouldn't have. For Sophy, it was a lack of traction due to the fact that she was actually running three businesses so no one quite knew what she was offering when! In this episode, we're going to get into how they ended up with complex businesses in the first place, how they identified the need to simplify, and what the process of actually letting go of that complication looked like. In next week's episode, we'll dive into how they actually restructured things, how doing business is different today, and what the results have been—hint: they're both making more money. When you think about public relations, what comes to mind is probably media mentions and magazine placements. But modern PR is about so much more than that. Today, appearing on podcasts is an essential way for small business owners to grow their brand. Seriously: entrepreneurs who show up on key podcasts typically get more exposure, build their audience faster, and even get more sales immediately following a podcast appearance, according to today’s guest. There are so many benefits to incorporating a public relations strategy into your small business—and, of course, I was determined to find out how to take advantage of the most powerful and most leveraged PR strategies that are out there today so that we can get the biggest results with the least amount of effort. That’s why I’m excited to introduce you to my guest today, Brigitte Lyons. Rob:   Definitely a big deal episode. And I probably just said the business name wrong too, it's Ally, right? Not Alley. Brigitte:         Yeah, it's Ally. The naming of the business, that mistake right there was actually my biggest kind of fear. You know that have to be visible in order to make a difference in the world. A movement was never started by hiding out behind your computer. A speaking career is never launched by posting on Facebook and Instagram alone. People must know about you and your message in order to grow network and build relationships that grow your speaking platform. You need the help of other people. Specifically, you need the help of other people's audiences. You can't do this alone. You have to enlist others in helping you spread your message. In my opinion, one of the best and easiest ways to be exposed to other people's audience is to do podcast interviews. Why? Well according to my friend and founder of B, the PR agency, Brigitte Lyons, in the past two years podcasts have emerged as the newest media disruptor. Everyone from major brands to indie businesses to speakers are flocking to get their message out through podcast. As a speaker, you should be doing this too. You can get known for your message when you appear on a podcast. Let's face it, getting on a podcast is much faster and easier than landing a speaking gig. So let's get you on some podcasts.
