After a long pause, I'm returning with conversations about what creativity is actually for. Not just how to grow faster or sell more, but why making matters in the first place. In this episode, I sit down with UK textile artist and founder of No Rules Textile Society, Jayne Emerson. We talk about building a creative business without hustle, choosing depth over scale and creating something sustainable instead of chasing constant expansion.Jayne shares how she moved from quietly selling textile samples to major fashion houses to openly teaching her methods and building a membership rooted in permission and play. We talk about “following the fizz,” turning perceived flaws into strengths, and why your art practice has to become non-negotiable if you want your business to feel aligned. If you're an artist or creative educator who wants a business that supports your life instead of consuming it, this episode will resonate. You can connect with Jayne Here:Website: https://jayneemerson.co.uk/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jayneemersontextiles/No Rules Society: https://www.norulestextilesociety.com/Shout out to Aimee Stammers for the phrase "Follow the Fizz"!FREE Download: "Steal My Ideas: 100 ways to build a Profitable creative educator Business IN 2025" Grab it HERE New mini masterclass: The Profitable Course Creator is an instant access workshop to help Creatives, Artists and Makers discover how to achieve financial success as a course creator without sacrificing their passion. For our 200th episode of Money Skills for Therapists, I invited my business besties, Tiffany McLain and Maegan Megginson, to join me for a conversation that was more honest than polished. Together, we unpacked the real seasons of entrepreneurship — the times when you feel energized, expanding, and deeply aligned… and the times when you feel tired, restless, like you're questioning everything, or quietly pulling back. If you've ever wondered whether it's normal to feel both love and resentment toward your business at different points, this conversation is for you.Navigating the Seasons of BusinessRunning a therapy-focused business isn't a constant upward climb. It has seasons of expansion, contraction, clarity, confusion. In this conversation, we let ourselves name that truth. We talked about what it feels like when you're all in — launching, creating, hiring, dreaming bigger. And we also opened up about the quieter seasons: reducing your client load, winding down programs, letting team members go, or wondering if you even want to keep doing this work in the same way. There's so much pressure in entrepreneurship to always be scaling. But sometimes wisdom looks like pulling back. Sometimes contraction isn't failure — it's integration. At the same time, building work you genuinely enjoy doesn't happen by accident. It requires noticing your energy, building systems that support you instead of draining you, and being honest about what you're doing because you want to rather than because you think you “should.”We also talked about money — because underneath many expansion or contraction decisions is a financial story. Cultural conditioning around money. Fear of losing relevance. Fantasies about quitting. Fantasies about scaling. And how helpful it is to have friends who understand the nuance of all of it.Listening to Your Season Instead of Forcing GrowthEntrepreneurship isn't just strategy — it's discernment. It's noticing whether you're in a building season or a gathering season. Whether something needs to grow… or gently end.00:04:02 Life and Business Have Seasons00:12:52 Shifting Beliefs in Business00:14:25 Creative Business as Living Practice00:24:06 Embracing Healthy Contraction00:25:14 Winding Down with Care00:32:46 Embracing Flexibility and Growth00:38:21 Slow Down, Take a Breath00:39:15 Discernment Before Building Something New00:44:36 Value of Business Besties00:46:02 Mastering Money for TherapistsLetting Your Business Evolve with YouOne thing we kept circling back to is this: your business is allowed to change as you change. There are seasons where you build aggressively, seasons where you stabilize, seasons where you question everything, and seasons where you rediscover joy.You don't have to cling to an old identity just because it once worked. You don't have to keep scaling just because you can. And you don't have to quit just because you're tired.Sometimes the most mature move is slowing down long enough to ask, “What season am I actually in?”Ready to Improve your Business Money Skills? Are you a Solo Private Practice Owner? In this episode, I'm unpacking the powerful mindset shift I learned in therapy that's changing how I view sales, growth, and identity as an entrepreneur. We're talking about the tendency to collect proof that our limiting beliefs are true and how that impacts confidence, risk-taking, and business decisions. If you've ever thought “I'm bad at selling,” “I'm behind,” or “this just isn't working,” this conversation will help you challenge those narratives and start searching for evidence in the opposite direction. This is a practical mindset episode for creative entrepreneurs ready to stop playing small and start rewriting their story.

SEO Description:IntroductionIn this episode of the I Hate Numbers podcast, we tackle a tough but necessary truth: ignoring your numbers is quietly damaging your creative business. We understand why creatives avoid spreadsheets, budgets, and financial reports. You started your journey to create, perform, design, and inspire — not to stare at figures. However, the longer you ignore your numbers, the louder the financial clock ticks. Why Ignoring Your Numbers Feels AppealingLet's be honest. Avoidance feels easier in the short term. Staying reactive, making decisions on instinct, and hoping everything works out can seem simpler than facing the reality of your bank balance. But if you want to stay stressed, reactive, and running what feels more like an expensive hobby than a business, then ignoring your finances is a perfect strategy. Without clarity:You make snap decisions without insight. You chase invoices while worrying about rent. You feel overwhelmed by tax deadlines. You live hand-to-mouth from project to project. That is not creative freedom. That is financial anxiety. Why Numbers Matter (Even If You Dislike Them)When you understand your numbers, something empowering happens. You stop guessing. You start making informed decisions. You move from “I hope this works” to “I know this works.” It is like switching on the light in a dark room. You can see what is coming in, what is going out, and where growth is possible. Understanding your finances does not mean becoming an accountant. It means becoming the driver of your business rather than a passenger.Profit Is Not a Dirty WordProfit allows you to cover your costs, pay yourself properly, and build a financial buffer. It gives you sustainability. It prevents burnout and protects your creative future. Without profit, your business cannot survive long term. How you earn that profit is up to you. Ethics and values matter. But profit itself is not the enemy.Three Simple Steps You Can Take Today1. Track What's Coming In and Going OutYou do not need complex systems to start. A notebook, spreadsheet, or digital tool like Xero cloud accounting can give you visibility and control.2. Schedule a Weekly Money Check-InSet aside 15 to 30 minutes each week to review your numbers. Treat it like brushing your teeth — routine, necessary, and good for your long-term health.3. Give Every Pound a PurposeAssign money intentionally. Allocate funds for tax, equipment, rent, savings, and paying yourself. Money without a plan disappears. You Are Not AloneYou did not enter the creative world to become a number cruncher. But if you want your passion to pay the bills — and more — then your numbers matter. That is why we created the podcast. It is why Numbers Know How and I Hate Numbers exist — to make finance human, practical, and empowering for creatives.Key TakeawayIgnoring your numbers might feel comfortable in the short term, but it limits your growth. When you face them — even imperfectly — you take back control. Understanding your money does not make you less creative. It makes you unstoppable.Episode Timecodes[00:00:00] – Why...

Furniture flipping looks dreamy from the outside: paint, pretty pieces, a tidy before-and-after, but Jen Talley pulls back the curtain on what actually makes it sustainable. This conversation sits in the quiet middle between passion and burnout: learning when to say yes, when to say no, and why boundaries are just as creative as brushstrokes. Jen shares how her business evolved from late-night hobby energy to an intentional, values-led rhythm; choosing better pieces, protecting her time, letting simplicity sell, and honoring the very human reasons this work matters. It's grounded, honest, and deeply reassuring for anyone trying to turn “I love this” into “this actually works.”Jen Talley is a furniture artist known for her timeless, perfectly imperfect approach and a business built on intention over hustle. We sit down for our annual year-end conversation, reflecting on 2025 and mapping out intentions for 2026. The discussion moves between practical revenue planning and deeper questions about identity, authenticity, and what it means to build a creative life without losing yourself in the process. We explore the tension between chasing grandiose visions of success and learning to be present with who we actually are—people who source vintage records, make photographs, create videos, and build websites. The conversation touches on the difference between "playing the part" of a successful creator versus doing work that genuinely reflects our interests and values. We discuss building infrastructure: getting websites live, returning to photography, potentially publishing short stories, and establishing outlets for work that's been internal for too long. Both of us grapple with the pull of consumption and distraction versus the slower work of being present, disciplined, and engaged with the actual world. The episode ends on the idea of returning to being generalists rather than specialists—people with broad interests and connections across different areas of life, people who haven't traded their souls for narrow visions of achievement. -Ai If you enjoyed this episode, please consider giving us a rating and/or a review. Send us a textWe're bombarded with messages telling us we're missing some secret key to business success—especially at the start of a new year—but here's the truth: There's nothing fundamentally new about running a successful business, no matter what year it is. What if the real problem isn't that you're lacking some proprietary system or special knowledge, but that you've been convinced you need to keep searching for answers instead of trusting what you already know? The basics of business haven't changed in decades: tell people your work exists, get better at reaching the right people, and keep showing up consistently—and while educational resources can help, the courses promising to 3x your sales or unlock secret formulas are preying on your imposter syndrome rather than addressing the real work of building genuine connections with your customers. Instead of chasing the next shiny solution that promises to make everything easier, what if you gave yourself permission to trust that the sustainable, incremental progress you're already making—even when it feels slow or uncomfortable—is exactly what building a real creative business actually looks like?I'm putting together a new free resource to help you trust yourself. If you're wanting to double your business in 2026, it's going to take looking back at 2025 with a strategic eye.One of our new favorite quotes is: life is lived forward, but it's only understood backwards. Most creatives end the year asking how they feel about their business.Successful creative business owners end the year asking what actually happened. In this episode, we walk through the five questions we personally ask every year to get clarity, stop repeating the same mistakes, and set our business up for real growth. These aren't fluffy mindset prompts. They're practical, sometimes uncomfortable questions that reveal what's actually driving (or holding back) your business, whether you're a photographer, filmmaker, content creator, or social media manager. We cover:Whether your business truly made money - or just kept you busyWhere your revenue actually came from (and what that means for next year)Where your business was proactive vs reactiveIf growth would make your life easier… or completely overwhelm youThe one change that would make 2026 simpler and more profitableFor each question, we break down:Why it mattersWhat most creatives get wrongHow to think about it clearlyOne actionable step you can take immediatelyThe goal of these questions is simple:to slow down long enough to understand what really happened - so you don't accidentally repeat the same year again. If you want to join the 400+ graduates who have made $112M over the last 6 years & who are succeeding at doing what they love, crossing the 6 figure mark and breaking the creative struggle..
