After months of development, I'm revealing the complete framework that transforms struggling creative businesses into thriving ones. Many creative entrepreneurs unknowingly struggle against their natural strengths instead of building from them. In this episode, I introduce The Base Notes framework, a proven approach that helps you align your creative business with what you naturally do best. Learn why sustainable growth, authentic marketing, and real confidence come from recognising and building around your exceptional strengths. This isn't about becoming someone different, it's about growing a thriving creative business by doing what comes naturally.   Key Moments: [03:33] Why traditional business approaches aren't designed for creative minds [05:30] The turning point in my journey that changed everything - building around natural strengths instead of fighting against them [06:46] The three critical shifts that separate struggling creatives from thriving ones [09:15] What makes The Base Notes different from other business guides you may have tried before [12:38] The Nine Base Notes Framework - A walkthrough of all nine transformational chapters [17:18] Why I called it "The Base Notes" - the foundational elements that give lasting impact [21:08] Everything included: the complete handbook plus three practical bonuses [25:56] A special founding member opportunity    Notable Quotes: "When creative entrepreneurs build businesses around what comes naturally to them, everything becomes clearer, more sustainable, and genuinely more enjoyable." "You're not looking to become a different person - you want to build a business that honours who you already are. In this captivating conversation, Jen takes us through her unconventional journey from a rural Vermont childhood to becoming a successful entrepreneur who built her business from the ground up. Jen shares her early experiences growing up in a traditional New England family where money was never discussed, her bold decision to attend boarding school at 14, and how she pieced together her first business while bartending in Vermont after graduating from RISD. We explore her strategic move to Colorado with just one cornerstone client, her savvy real estate investments that started with only $1,500, and the creative partnership with her husband that has shaped both their personal and financial decisions. Throughout our discussion, Jen opens up about the realities of entrepreneurship, from learning to price her services to navigating the challenges of raising two kids while running a business. She shares valuable insights on teaching financial literacy to her children, experimenting with alternative wealth-building strategies, and her surprising contemplation of leaving her successful 24-year business to work for a corporation. This episode is packed with practical wisdom for creative entrepreneurs, insights on building wealth through strategic investments, and honest reflections on the intersection of creativity, business, and family life. Key Topics: How to price your creative services when you have no experience or market reference points Building a business through word-of-mouth marketing while working other jobs to support yourself Making strategic real estate investments with minimal capital and turning small investments into long-term wealth Navigating finances as a couple when one partner is an entrepreneur with irregular income Teaching kids about money through transparency and real-world budgeting exercises Alternative wealth-building strategies beyond traditional employment, including buying and scaling small businesses When and why a successful entrepreneur might consider leaving their business for corporate employment Connect with Jen online: Website: https://drawingfrommemory.com/   Find more from Syama Bunten: Instagram: @syama.co, @gettingrichpod Website: https://syamabunten.com/ Download Syama's Guide to Getting Rich: www.syamabunten.com Big Delta Capital: www.bigdeltacapital.com

In this episode of "Cocoon Conversations" on the Career Flipper podcast, I, Jenny Dempsey, take you along on my career journey.  This year, I've committed to opening up about my own career flip, just as I encourage my guests to do. So here we are, in May 2025, and I can hardly believe it's been four months since I started my current day job. It feels surreal to say that, especially considering I was laid off for two years before this.During this time, I've been balancing my full-time job with furniture restoration on the side, dedicating Sundays to it, and squeezing in podcasting and all the related tasks whenever I can. If that sounds overwhelming, it is! Life can be a juggling act, and I know I'm not alone in feeling this way. Scheduling time with friends often feels like a game of Tetris, as we all navigate our busy lives.I've always been the type of person who thrives on variety. I'm the one multitasking—doing laundry while putting away dishes, preparing to record a podcast, creating social media content for my furniture flipping page, and making sure my dog, Dwight, gets outside for a potty break. My brain has always thrived on this mix of activities, and I've been like this for as long as I can remember.Looking back, I've come to realize something significant. For a long time, I believed that work—capital W work—was my identity. I thought it was the only thing I was good at. I didn't believe in taking vacations; if I did, I'd bring my laptop along and continue working. I even had a panic attack in front of a customer service team I was managing because I was so consumed by my job. I poured everything into my work, only to learn the hard way that companies would replace me in an instant. When I was laid off and struggled to find a new job for two years, I was left questioning my identity. Who was I if I wasn't working?I dive into this and more in the episode! Have an idea or tip? Send us a text!Celi Arias knows what it means to struggle as a creative entrepreneur. From sleeping on an air mattress on her factory floor to building and selling multi-seven-figure businesses, her journey has been anything but linear. Now, as the founder of Grown Ass Business, she's on a mission to help other creative entrepreneurs build sustainable businesses without burning out.The truth about turning passion into profit isn't what most business coaches want you to hear. As Arias reveals, passion alone is a "finicky lover" that can't sustain you through the challenges of entrepreneurship. What truly matters is recognizing that business itself is an art form with its own set of rules—rules you need to understand before you can successfully break them.At the heart of entrepreneurial burnout lies a fundamental problem: working without clear direction. When you're "just working to work" without a defined end goal, exhaustion inevitably follows. Whether your vision involves a specific revenue target, lifestyle freedom, or building a legacy brand, knowing what you're working toward transforms how you approach each day's challenges. The most successful creative entrepreneurs resist "shiny object syndrome" by building proper business systems. They think in terms of departments and metrics even when working solo. They understand that delegation isn't just about offloading tasks—it's about creating a business that can eventually run without them constantly "pulling all the levers."For tReal Talk About MarketingAn Acxiom podcast where we discuss marketing made better, bringing you real...Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifyMediaclipMediaclip strives to continuously enhance the user experience while dramatically increasing revenue.Independent Photo ImagersIPI is a member + trade association and a cooperative buying group in the photo + print industry.Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched!Start for FREEDisclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Sharing your work with the world can feel scary, vulnerable, and overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. Launching isn't about hype or hustle; it's about connection and care. I talk about why launching feels so hard (especially for neurodivergent brains), how to rethink launching as a slow rhythm instead of a one-time event, and ways to share your work more gently and joyfully. If you've been holding back on putting your work into the world, this episode is your invitation to rethink how launching can feel.FULL SHOW NOTES WITH TAKEAWAYS + LINKS: patternshift.fmBEST QUOTE FROM THE EPISODE “Launching is how we bridge the gap between our purpose and our people.”⚡︎You know me as a guide, mentor and teacher, but I've also set off on a new adventure, coaching. Paper Talk

The journey of a creative entrepreneur is rarely a straight line. More often, it's a winding path full of experimentation, burnout, big dreams, and even bigger doubts. That's why on this episode of Paper Talk, Quynh Nguyen, Jessie Chui, and Sara Kim open up about what it truly takes to thrive, not just survive, as an artist today. At the heart of their discussion is their upcoming 6-week Paper to Profits: The Mastermind program, which runs from May 20 to June 24, 2025. Together, they're inviting creatives to join a community built on trust, strategy, and transformation. What You'll Learn in this Episode: Why understanding your personal and professional “why” is the key to success How pricing your art involves more than formulas—it's about lifestyle design Real talk about using AI (like ChatGPT) to save time without losing your voice Why you need to know your numbers (and your taxes!) How global tariffs could be impacting your costs and pricing A sneak peek at thePaper to Profits: The Mastermind curriculum Why Your “Why” Comes First Jessie kicks off by highlighting a common issue: many creatives stumble into business without pausing to reflect on why they're doing it. “Most of us just keep going—someone loves what we make, they offer to pay us, and suddenly we're running a business,” she says. But three years in, we find ourselves questioning everything. The first chapter of Paper to Profits: The Mastermind dives into this very question: What is your why? Is it to inspire? Educate? Find joy in the making? Your why will shape every business decision you make, from what jobs to take to how you grow your audience. Sara's Story: From Trend-Chasing to Heart-Led Work Sara shares her early business pivots, including chasing trends like wedding accessories, before reconnecting with her true love - paper flowers. “I was doing it just for the money, but it wasn't me,” she admits. Now, she balances income from paper flowers, digital products, and monetized social media content on her terms. Pricing as a Lifestyle Decision Jessie reframes pricing not as a rigid formula, but as a holistic business decision. "It's not about what someone will pay. It's about how you want to live,” she says. During the The Mastermind, they guide creatives through building sustainable pricing that supports their revenue goals and lifestyle. Knowing Your Numbers Quynh and Sara both stress the importance of tracking costs - everything from shipping to sales tax. It's easy to overlook these when starting out, but they add up quickly. As Sara recounts a wholesale mishap that left her barely breaking even, she underscores how essential it is to calculate true margins. “You don't realize how quickly the small costs eat into your profits.” Why You Can't Ignore Social Media Sara leads the social media portion of the mastermind, helping participants not only showcase their work but create monetizable content. “You don't need to go viral to make an impact, but when you do, it's magic,” she shares. She once had a TikTok video spark thousands of purchases in a single day. AI Tools and Real-Time Efficiency Quynh brings transparency to how the Paper Talk team now leverages AI tools like ChatGPT. From editing videos to generating SEO-friendly content, AI can be a time-saving partner if used wisely. She'll be teaching how to prompt effectively and keep the authentic voice behind the automation. Tariffs and the Hidden Costs of Creation Jessie and Quynh explain how fluctuating tariffs impact supply costs - from paper to packaging - and why that matters to your pricing strategy. “We need to factor in more than just product cost. There's shipping, taxes, even the risk of sudden price hikes,” Quynh notes. Community, Not Competition Finally, they emphasize the magic of being in a group where others truly understand your challenges. “We've all been there,” Quynh says. “When you hear how others solved a problem, it gives you permission to find your own way too.” Paper to Profits: The Mastermind is limited to just 24 seats and includes: 6 weekly live sessions 250+ page Paper to Profits book with 9 Chapters plus 4 bonuses Worksheets, prompts, and recordings Direct feedback and Q&A opportunities A private, supportive peer group Your Journey Towards a Thriving Creative Business Starts Here With Us.
