Rachel has a designer's moxie. Her creativity and observation skills serve her in life and in her career in textiles. A college class field trip allowed her to imagine a professional path working with fabric and weaving, a craft she lovingly pursued as a child with her grandmother. She finds inspiration in the smallest places and sets her moxie sights always higher, one ladder rung at a time, building on what she has created for herself and her family. Rachel, the Design Director for Pollack, has textile design in her DNA. She created her first official textile pattern in third grade–splatter-painted curtains made from old sheets. Her high school graduation present—a new sewing machine—offers another clue to her early textile passions, as did the uniquely personal clothing it helped her create. She studied printmaking and painting and even taught batik workshops when she first entered college at Umass Amherst. In the Textile Design department at the Rhode Island School of Design, she realized the practical application of her beloved woven and printed textile techniques. Rachel first worked in the fashion industry, including designing printed silk scarves at Echo before joining the Pollack Studio in 2000. In 2007, she was appointed Vice President, Associate Design Director. She took the helm as Pollack's Design Director in 2012, overseeing the Studio and guiding the creative vision for each textile collection. In the Studio, she and her team always begin a pattern by first creating artwork by hand. The studio's designers are, first and foremost, weavers. They have degrees in textile design, having learned the architecture of cloth and how to build a fabric from the ground up. Rachel works with weavers worldwide to bring Pollack's designs to life.Rachel's designs for Pollack have been featured in national magazines, including Architectural Digest, Interior Design, and Elle Décor. She has been profiled on such sites as Apartment Therapy and House and Home TV. Two of her creations, “Mod” and “Curlycue,” are in the permanent collection of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. This episode of Main Street Moxie is sponsored by Elyse Harney Real Estate and North East Ford. Interviews by Brainard Carey

Sydney Licht draws inspiration from the common, disposable detritus of everyday life and creates still lives centered around takeout containers, department store boxes, sugar packets and other disposables.  Licht tells the domestic experience of society's materialism via modern takes on the still life. “For centuries, still life paintings have portrayed items from the realm of the domestic....food, utensils, dishes, flowers and other elements that celebrate the table and the communal dining experience,” Licht says. “Today, as technology impacts our lives more and more, few of us have the means or the desire to spend hours preparing and presenting a meal served on china dishes with silver place settings.  Instead, we order online and our food arrives ready to be microwaved.  During the Covid era, communal dining experiences were more likely to occur on a computer via Zoom than in person sitting around a table together.  All of this begs the question, has the shelf life of the still life as we've known it reached its expiration date?” Sydney Licht has exhibited widely throughout the United States. Her work has been featured in the New Yorker and Elle Décor, among other publications. She has been a visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome twice, and the recipient of the Yaddo Residency. Licht has an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and lives and works in New York City. Sydney Licht, Still Life with Packing Tape, 2022 oil on panel 10 x 10 in. THE GLIMPSE: A beautifully written story of art, empowerment and the bonds of maternal love

Lis Bensley and I had the opportunity to sit down and talk about her debut novel, THE GLIMPSE. In THE GLIMPSE, Lis paints an incredibly moving and emotionally engaging story of an artist who is struggling to find her way. A sophisticated, unsentimental and beautifully written story of art, empowerment and the bonds of maternal love. THE GLIMPSE is also a beautifully nuanced study of the relationship between a mother and her teenage daughter. If the earlier narrative of failing to make it in New York is told in broad strokes then the second half of the novel turns on seemingly slight but emotionally intense moments. Lis Bensley has written for The New York Times, the International Herald Tribune, Elle Décor and The Santa Fean, among others. She's been an arts journalist for several years, and also a single mom of two boys. Both of which informed her novel. The Glimpse has been awarded the Independent Press Distinguished Fiction, the Literal Lion Gold Award and the IPPY Silver award for best regional fiction. Lis currently lives in Santa Cruz with her sculptor husband. In this episode, you'll learn: During the abstract expressionist era of art (1943-mid 1950's) it was the kiss of death to have a child for women artists and in many ways this continues today. 80 % of all collections in museums today are composed of work done by men. As a woman, there's always a tug in my mind that you can go deeply into your fictional world but you can't totally disappear because I've got to remember to come out and deal with my life and children (7:37)Writing fiction you bring a lot of emotionality to it, this was a new skill to learn because as a journalist you do not do this (10:53)Writing a novel is like driving home in the dark without headlights on, you can't see very far ahead but if you keep going, you'll get there (11:03)I'd sit down every day and say, Just write a scene, don't worry about where it's going (11:19)If we could apply that idea to life, just be in one scene at a time. We have the moment now and that's what we have to count on, so make the most of it (11:55)Questions I asked: Were there personal issues you felt compelled to work through in this body of work? (5:52)Have you ever painted yourself given how visceral and alive the painting is within your story? (9:09)Did you ever worry about how the mother character would be portrayed? (15:03)Did you evolve as a person as you worked through the book? (10:20)Did you feel an intersection between your own healing and your art as you worked through this book? In this episode of The Right Angle Podcast, Elle Liu interviews Rachel Doriss, Vice President and design director of Pollack. Rachel first studied printmaking and painting, and even taught batik workshops when she first entered college. But it was in the Textile Design department at the Rhode Island School of Design that she realized, for the first time, the practical application of her beloved woven and printed textile techniques. She graduated with a BFA from RISD in 1999, and designed printed silk scarves at Echo before joining the Pollack Studio in 2000. In 2007, Rachel was appointed Vice President, Associate Design Director. She took the helm as Pollack's Design Director in 2011, overseeing the Studio and guiding the creative vision for each textile collection. In the Studio, she and her team always begin a pattern by first creating artwork by hand. Rachel's designs for Pollack have been featured in national magazines, including Architectural Digest, Interior Design and Elle Décor, and she has been profiled on such sites as Apartment Therapy and House and Home TV. Two of her creations, “Mod” and “Curlycue,” are in the permanent collection of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.
