Having unearthed some first-to-be-heard gems regarding Michael, MAX Q and Ollie Olsen, part 2 of our Bruce Butler interview shares more updates and provides legacy to an important musical partnership: a union that combined Ollie's avant garde with Michael's pop sensibilities. Bruce shares wonderful anecdotes about a young Andrew Farriss' insatiable appetite to absorb and borrow from his 10,000-deep record collection in his younger years, plus Bruce's forays into music television production, with an interesting story about a newly single Andrew Ridgely, post-Wham! Forever erudite and passionate, Bruce showcases all that is wonderful and fascinating about the 1980's and 90's, pre-internet and social media, when live concerts, rock music and superstar icons deserved the title and accolades based on their “talent”, NOT the “clicks”. So, buckle up and enjoy our “sesquicentennial episode”! and go fund https://gofund.me/fef5a047 Ollie Olsen! We at INXS Access All Areas love producing every episode and sharing them with you, but sometimes a guest comes along that literally blows it “out of the park”. Bruce Butler, a true music heavyweight and Australian national treasure, is that guest! This two-part deep dive pays particular homage to the greatness of Ollie Olsen, who currently faces the biggest health fight of his life, plus the exciting re-imagined version of “Rooms for the Memory” (an initial 1987 solo number 11 hit for Michael Hutchence via the Dogs in Space soundtrack). Bruce opens up on this exciting initiative that coincidentally was re-recorded on January 22nd 2023 (sounds familiar), including an updated film clip by Richard Lowenstein, plus a cast of many Australian recording artist luminaries like Adalita, Mick Harvey and Andrew Duffield. With a goal of raising funds for Ollie, this exciting project shall see an international release in July and a possible in-store live performance launch. Having also managed The Church, launched Virgin Records in Australia, and set up iconic shows here such as The Factory and Countdown Revolution, Bruce's integrity to project and artist selection is exceptional. Bruce's revelations about meeting Michael Hutchence as teenagers in Sydney, the missing master recordings of Max Q and the plethora of fantastic anecdotes throughout his career make these two episodes a NOT-TO-BE-MISSED experience. Pod 31, 15th October 2020 - SUT CEO Steve Hall interviews Luke Alden, a Mechanical Designer working for International Submarine Engineering in British Columbia, Canada. Luke's background is in industrial design, working on projects such as the design of aircraft cockpit instrument layouts and watertight doors for lifeboats. He moved to Canada and joined ISE, a company that has been a pioneer in the development and operation of marine autonomous systems, industrial remote operated vehicles and semi-submersible platforms for long-range surveillance and patrol. Luke tells us some of the rich history of ISE, which included the famous 'Theseus' vehicle we spoke to Bruce Butler about back in Pod 15, and moves on to the present-day 'Explorer' vehicle, before talking about future developments. Find out more about ISE at http://www.ise.bc.ca/ & you can contact Luke at lalden@ise.bc.caFind out more about SUT at www.sut.org, email Steve at steve.hall@sut.org We're making a special Question & Answer episode for broadcast in December 2020 so please get in touch if you have questions on any aspects of ocean technology or for our previous guests. Thanks to Emily Boddy for podcast artwork and composing and performing the podcast theme music. This week SUT CEO Steve Hall interviews Canadian engineer Bruce Butler about the extraordinary, and history-making, mission of the 'Theseus' autonomous underwater vehicle from ISE to lay a cable under Arctic Ice in 1996, following several years of development. See https://ise.bc.ca/product/theseus-auv/ or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theseus_(AUV) In the 1990s Canada and the USA needed to find a way to attach fibre optic cable to monitoring equipment located under the sea ice of the Canadian Arctic - the innovative solution found under Project Spinnaker was to develop a cable-laying autonomous underwater vehicle to unspool the delicate cable under hundreds of kilometres of ice. In the interview Bruce outlines his career to date, and the development of Theseus, finishing with the successful mission and aftermath.Bruce has written an excellent book 'Into the Labyrinth: The Making of a Modern Day Theseus - the book website is at http://www.theseusbook.com/ - also see https://www.amazon.co.uk/Into-Labyrinth-Making-Modern-Day-Theseus/dp/0994953836/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= that covers the project in great detail - it's available as paperback, e-book and audiobook. You can see a sample of Bruce's book at https://read.amazon.co.uk/kp/embed?asin=B07JN6VNJ1&preview=newtab&linkCode=kpe&ref_=cm_sw_r_kb_dp_UHW-EbMQ8PYA6Find out more about SUT at sut.org, contact Steve Hall at steve.hall@sut.org Thanks to Emily Boddy for composing and performing the theme music, and for creating the podcast artwork. In this episode, host Cathy Booth catches up with Bruce Butler in the USA and teases out some top tips to arranging a successful ringing tour. Bruce has been organising ringing tours to the UK since the 1990s - the logistics of arranging transatlantic ringing tours in the days before the internet are mind-blowing.Having rung in almost 4,000 towers you might imagine the Bruce has some great stories to tell, and you wouldn’t be wrong. Hear about inaccessible spaces, strange ringing attire and some rather unusual furniture in the ringing chamber. And just watch out for the flowers around the font!Bruce gives a brilliant overview of the towers of North America, their various merits and the differences between ringing over there and in the UK. Loving the sound of a Cathedral with two elevators to take you up to the top.As Bruce says, American ringers are a welcoming bunch and love to have visitors - so what’s stopping you from planning your tour across the pond ...For more information, accompanying photos and details of the 'Ask the Expert' section go do funwithbells.com

Today's podcast is a discussion based on this rant titled, "The Watering Down of Ironman" by Bruce Butler. Here's an excerpt from the post: "This change was part of Ironman’s “SwimSmart initiative,” with the goal of “improving athlete satisfaction and reducing anxiety during the swim portion of the race.” As part of this initiative, floats are also available so swimmers can stop and take a breather if needed. Seriously?" ----------------- We address his post, but look at many other ways we can all enjoy the sport more and offer a solid potential solution for the Mass Swim Start dilemma. - Does the SwimSmart Initiative Really Make Things Safer? - What Does Ironman REALLY Do For People? - Why not have some Mass Starts? - Don't people like the idea of picking races because they're different? - Are You Trained Up Enough To Enjoy Your Races? - Obsessing On Accomplishment vs. The Process - The AWA - All World Athlete? - How We Feel About People Who Say Ironman is Easy - The Underdog Story Looking for a coach? In Matthew 5, Jesus said to His followers, "You are the salt of the earth" and "You are the light of the world." But what does that mean for us today? How are we supposed to be salt and light in our current world? How do we engage a society filled with injustice, racial tension, political division, and sexual diversity? This week, Trent interviews Bruce Butler about how we can be salt and light in the face of racial tension.
