A Memorial Day weekend podcast.  Michael Hutchence, who passed in 1997 stopped by to say hello.  He said that he wanted to "talk about death" but it wasn't until I was uploading this I realized he was referring to "a day where we remember people who have passed away." I mentioned that we had spoken to him briefly before, that transcript is in one of our Backstage Pass to the Flipside conversations - if memory serves me it was a brief conversation about his crossing over unexpectedly. In today's podcast he talks about who greeted him on the other side, and what that was like - as well as the perspective he has now after this amount time has gone by.  He mentioned how in the interim he's realized that he had planned to "leave early" - not that the events is chosen in advance, but that there's the aspect of "returning home." When asked about that, he talked about already being back on the planet in there different individuals. While this may sound unusual - it's not unheard of.  We bring only a percentage of our conscious energy to a lifetime - the average is between 20 and 40% (based on interviews) - but that leaves behind 60 to 80% of our conscious energy - so in essence, we can do multiple journeys at the same time. It's rare, I've only spoken to a few individuals who are aware of participating in that sort of journey - but it has been reported.  The point is that those individuals won't meet each other, but they will experience things to learn or teach lessons.  In this case, Michael said he was back as a "homeless person" as well as a saxophonist living in London named Louis. (Or Luis).   Anyways, we had a lively discussion about that aspect of how consciousness functions or incarnations works. Then Elvis stopped by - and also wanted to discuss his journey.  I reminded him how he had returned to visit us a few years after our first conversation to talk about the unborn child that greeted him on the other side, and how he felt such overwhelming unconditional love during that experience. I asked him some questions about that - and then Jennifer's father in law stopped by and had some observations for her - and her father told her that he had told this gentleman that the only time Jennifer "believes she's talking to us" was on our podcast. Another mind bending adventure.  Happy Memorial day and thanks for tuning in!  And a reminder, we're appearing at Contact in the Desert this weekend, a lecture on Friday at 11 am (May 30th) and a workshop demonstration on Saturday at 11 am (May 31st, 2025).  Enjoy!

INXS legends Jon Farriss and Kirk Pengilly join Gleeso on Triple M Nights to celebrate 40 years of Listen Like Thieves, the album that catapulted the Aussie rock icons to global stardom. First released in 1985, Listen Like Thieves marked the beginning of INXS’ game-changing collaboration with producer Chris Thomas — the man determined to bottle the band’s raw, live energy in a studio setting. “He was fascinated by how powerful we were live, and how we hadn’t captured that yet on record,” explains Kirk Pengilly. The result was a sonic turning point that redefined their sound and laid the groundwork for their future success with albums like Kick and X. Jon and Kirk also reflect on the 40th anniversary reissue, which has been meticulously remixed by Giles Martin — son of legendary Beatles producer George Martin — bringing new depth and clarity to the classic album. In a poignant moment, the boys open up about revisiting rare tapes and old recordings of their late bandmate Michael Hutchence, sharing the emotion and nostalgia of hearing his iconic voice again.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

With a catalogue as extensive as INXS', there was bound to be moments in time when certain songs captured the zeitgeist attention of the music buying public and critics. Look no further than January 28th, 1988 when a humble hard working sextet from Australia hit number one on the Billboard Charts with Need You Tonight. A song, that now, sounds so familiar, crisp and radio friendly but then, a new modern twist on funk, soul and pop with sound production so cutting edge, every breath, ooh and aah sounded like Michael Hutchence was singing it to you directly from your living room. Combined with an innovative, breathtaking and cutting edge video clip, Need you Tonight put INXS into the stratosphere of superstardom and success. MTV awards ensued, world tours were booked and the album Kick had the necessary momentum to spawn 4 subsequent hit singles and international acclaim. Five years later in February 1993, a less prominent and commercially successful track was released as the fifth single to Welcome to Wherever You are, namely Beautiful Girl. A self-penned track by Andrew Farriss as an ode to new fatherhood, this restrained, mellow and resonant song showcased a maturity, subtlety and consciousness to both the INXS writing and recording process. Charting steadily if not spectacularly, the film clip by Mark Pellington of U2 and Pearl Jam fame would garner a Grammy nomination for Best Video of the Year losing out to Peter Gabriel's “Steam” clip. That aside, the social conscious messaging of the clip resonated nicely with the lyrical content whilst Michael's channeling of Lou Reed, circa The Velvet Underground era only added to its worthiness. So sit back and reminisce as we step back in time and honour two distinct but two important songs in the INXS catalogue that still resonate 37 and 32 years later respectively.

What the Riff?!?
1988 - November: Bon Jovi "New Jersey"

What the Riff?!?

Bon Jovi took the rock world by storm with their massive third album, "Slippery When Wet."  A big tour followed, and afterwards the band was anxious to demonstrate that they were not a one (album) hit wonder.  They got into the studio at Vancouver, BC in May of 1988 and quickly recorded their fourth studio album entitled New Jersey.  Originally going under the working title "Sons of Beaches," the band would settle on their home state as the name of the album.  Bon Jovi wanted to make a double album, but the record label balked, fearing that the higher price tag of a double album would impact sales.  The album still clocked in at close to an hour of play length, not uncommon during a time when CD's were beginning to stretch the length of albums past the more common album play times.The result was a stellar success, debuting on the Billboard 200 albums chart at number 8, before moving to the top spot a week later, where it would remain for four weeks.  Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora wrote most of the songs on the album, with some assistance from songwriter Desmond Child.  Five singles from the album went into the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, with two topping that chart.Bon Jovi would go on to an unusual achievement - remaining one of rock music's A-listers for decades.  Bon Jovi would continue to sell out arenas, a feat limited to groups such as U2, Metallica, Elton John, and the Rolling Stones.  Friend of the show Julie Doran brings us this stellar album.  We are also joined by friend of the show Steve Hardin as we cover for the absence of both Wayne and Lynch this week. In addition, fan of the Show Christian joins us to help Rob bring his Staff Pick.  Bad MedicineJon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora collaborate with Desmond Child in the writing of this song which went to number 1 on the US charts.  The lyrics are pretty straightforward, comparing love to a drug.  "There ain't no doctor that can cure my disease."  The video features hand-held cameras provided to fans at the concert providing their "point of view" at the concert.Living In SinThe fifth single from the album still broke into the top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100.  This power ballad has lyrics that explore love being more powerful than the expectations of society.  Bon Jovi is singing about his high school sweetheart, whom he would marry in Las Vegas while on the New Jersey Syndicate tour.Born to Be My BabyThis single is another example for the collaboration with Desmond Child, and peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The song has a lot of similarities with Springsteen, with lyrics about a couple of working class lovers facing the world together.  The video took the opposite direction from many highly produced videos of the time, opting for low budget black-and-white.I'll Be There For YouThe big hit from the album was this number 1 power ballad.  With a runtime of 5:43, this song is the longest song to hit number 1 on the charts in 1989.  The lyrics describe a guy desperately seeking to get his girl back, this time forever.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Put a Little Love in Your Heart by Al Green and Annie Lennox (from the motion picture “Scrooged”)Bill Murray stars in this retelling of "A Christmas Carol." STAFF PICKS:Armageddon It by Def LeppardRob starts off the staff picks with the sixth single from the multi-platinum album, "Hysteria."  High School Student and Fan of the Show, Christian, assists with his thoughts on the band. By the time this song hit number 3 on the US charts, the album had been out for well over a year.  The lyrics are a play on words - “Hey, but are you gettin' it?  Armageddon it.”Desire by U2Julie's staff pick has a blues feel and a Bo Diddley beat.  The song is both a critique of the glitzy televangelist making money off his followers, and the ambition and glitz surrounding a successful rock band.  It won a Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group in 1989. I'm Sorry by Hothouse FlowersBruce features a long lost hit from a Dublin group that combines Irish music with an eclectic mix of soul, gospel, and rock influences.  You know, we all have times when we're "sitting back on our deep pile reclining chair" thinking about our lives and “looking over our misdemeanors, misgivings, misfortunes, and Miss Whatever her name is," and say "I'm sorry.”Never Tear Us Apart by INXSSteve closes out the staff picks this week.  INXS lead singer Michael Hutchence wrote the lyrics that describe a couple with an instant, almost karmic connection when they first meet.    This is the fourth single off the album "Kick" and went to number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. COMEDY TRACK:Wild Thing by Sam KenisonThe sultry sounds of Sam Kenison take us out with this angry cover of the Troggs classic.  Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. INXS: Access all Areas bring to you the most difficult of episodes since our Michael Hutchence funeral episode as we tackle Part Two of the Never Tear Us Apart Mini-Series circa 2014. That part of the INXS journey where Director Daina Reid tackles the wilderness years and unraveling of the band dynamic. Exhilarated but humbled by conquering the UK and European market culminating with the legendary Wembley gig in July 1991, INXS faced an undeserved and unwarranted backlash from their homeland. Episode two captures this and the ensuring dramas associated with trying to remain artistically and commercially relevant in a fast changing musical world with grunge, the Manchester scene and hip hop suddenly dominating the airwaves. This episode manages to capture a band still producing creative and daring material amidst the pressures of fame, family, relationships and Manager pressures and expectations. But with commercial appeal waning and the band members scattered throughout the globe, we get a “warts and all” account from the inside as to the difficulty many bands face when attempting to keep the machine rolling along. This episode respectfully deals with the obvious “elephant in the room” be it November 22nd, 1997 whilst criss-crossing time periods allowing the audience to appreciate the many decisions, compromises, struggles, sacrifices and commitment, INXS had to make during their career. As the show veers from re-creation into real spliced footage of the band traversing the world whist conquering countries, audiences, hearts and minds. Unabashedly and emotionally charged in more ways than one, we permit you to open up your soul and be proud of this Australian sextet who left an indelible footprint on the world. Forever the creative soul, Michael Hutchence was born to be more than just a lead singer of an international rock band. From the early days, Michael embraced the theatrical possibilities of music video and was at the forefront in ensuring INXS songs captured a visual vibrancy and vitality. As such, in today's episode we dive deep into the critical performances that shaped and piqued Michael's acting urges commencing in 1982 when Michael joined forces with iconic Cold Chisel songwriter, Don Walker in contributing to the seminal 1982 Australian film Freedom with two tracks and one video, notably Speed Kills that showcases a 21 year old Michael. The next 4 years were committed to INXS' global ascent via albums Shabooh Shabaah, The Swing and Listen Like Thieves, plus the relentless touring attached to these triumvirate recordings. So, it took till 1986 for Michael to clear his schedule when the opportunity came up to star in Richard Lowenstein's Dogs in Space came up. A movie that embraced the punk leanings of shared living suburbia amidst musical graft, this iconic art house movie has endured and influenced generations of fans and filmmakers over 38 years, despite its middling box office performance at the time. Fast forward 4 years later post the juggernaut albums and tours that were Kick and X, Michael scratched a lifelong itch portraying famed British poet Percy Shelly, by joining Bridget Fonda, John Hurt, Jason Patric and Raul Julia in legendary Hollywood Director Roger Corman's last ever picture “Frankenstein Unbound”. A true passion piece and one that Michael embraced with unyielding commitment and joy. Finally, Michael portrayed a Record Executive mogul in the underwhelming indie feature “Limp” that despite its problems, aroused the attention of both Michael Douglas' and Quentin Tarantino's production companies with speculation of future projects in the offing. Unfortunately, Michael's untimely passing thwarted what may have led a promising acting career into a burgeoning one. What is known, Michael possessed a charisma, a stare and a glare amidst an inner drive and creativity to succeed and express. One can only imagine what more he could have achieved in this space. Having completed nearly 200 gigs with JD Fortune via the Switch Album Tour over 2006-2007, INXS took a much needed break in 2008 to recharge the batteries and contemplate further new chapters in their career post Michael Hutchence. Amidst, a temporary falling out with JD, the band reunited with long term Manager Chris Murphy after a 14 year hiatus from band duties. With a renewed focus to move the band to a brand, the bank found inner inspiration when jamming in the studio during 2009 deconstructing old songs with new arrangements. As such, the idea to re-record some well known and unique deep cut INXS tracks was born with the idea of inviting select singers, DJ's and world music artists to lend a hand. A unique initiative rarely taken by a band and one normally reserved for tribute acts. With Jon Farriss and James Ash (Rogue Traders Founder) spearheading the production duties, the band put together an ambitious, creative and artistically successful album that avoided being a simple rehash or rebooting of existing soundscapes. With guest contributors including Ben Harper, Rob Thomas, Kav Temperley (Eskimo Joe), Pat Monahan (Train) and Nikka Costa, the album manages to incorporate modern production, excellent musicianship and soaring vocal performances imbuing a sense of celebration and admiration for INXS' songs. The album undoubtedly did in 2010 and now in 2024 challenge ardent, stoic and rusted on fans whose ears may be permanently etched to the sounds of the original songs, however as we have said on many occasions, “listen without prejudice” and you'll be in for a rare musical experience. we also have a poll running on our Facebook page. On the 56th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, author James Campion, review the 1977 legendary album by Rod Stewart, "Foot Loose & Fancy Free." "Foot Loose & Fancy Free" was Rod Stewart's eighth studio album. It continued Rod's 70's solo artist success. Rod's legendary vocals were in prime condition and he had tremendous band behind him. He had three guitarists, Gary Grainger, Jim Cregan and Billy Peek. His bassist was renowned session player Phil Chen. The keyboard player was Jon Barlow Jarvis and on the drums was the legendary Carmine Appice. This band could match up with any other band in the 1970's. The album featured three huge hits that have been in rotation on rock radio since the album was released, including "Hot Legs," "You're In My Heart (The Final Acclaim)" and "I Was Only Joking." Those three songs even had videos which were starting to become fashionable. The album also includes typical Rod Stewart ballads, some funk, some psychedelic rock, prog rock and more. The album made it to Number 2 on the US Billboard charts and has now gone 3X platinum. The album was produced by legendary Tom Dowd and was considered the last of his rocking 70's albums. Occasionally a song comes along that sits sedately surrounded by more spectacular songs but somehow over the journey of time reveals itself sonically, lyrically and emotionally within our hearts and minds. That's the story of INXS' masterpiece “The Stairs” from 1990's X album. After the one, two punch of Suicide Blonde and Disappear, both which climbed into the Billboard Top 10 Charts, The Stairs subtly and gradually provides a moment of introspective reflection in urban living amongst the masses and social alienation. With a contemplative introduction devoid of lyrics and full band interaction until the 80th second, INXS (according to Michael Hutchence) commit to a songwriting process and pathway that was to this point, their most ambitious recording. Absent was the traditional intro, verse, chorus, verse outro song structure with a greater emphasis on lyrical resonance and escalation. With a passioned vocal by Michael and a film clip that supports the lyrical themes of isolation and lack of community connection, INXS create a soundscape, lyric and message that some 34 years later has current day meaning in this online heavy but community lacking world. Having done deep dive episodes on more prominent singles such as What you Need, Never tear us Apart, Don't Change, Burn for You and The One Thing, we are proud to share a unique deep cut that has only blossomed and grown in the hearts, minds and souls of true INXS fans since 1990. On the 56th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, author James Campion, review the 1977 legendary album by Rod Stewart, "Foot Loose & Fancy Free." "Foot Loose & Fancy Free" was Rod Stewart's eighth studio album. It continued Rod's 70's solo artist success. Rod's legendary vocals were in prime condition and he had tremendous band behind him. He had three guitarists, Gary Grainger, Jim Cregan and Billy Peek. His bassist was renowned session player Phil Chen. The keyboard player was Jon Barlow Jarvis and on the drums was the legendary Carmine Appice. This band could match up with any other band in the 1970's. The album featured three huge hits that have been in rotation on rock radio since the album was released, including "Hot Legs," "You're In My Heart (The Final Acclaim)" and "I Was Only Joking." Those three songs even had videos which were starting to become fashionable. The album also includes typical Rod Stewart ballads, some funk, some psychedelic rock, prog rock and more. The album made it to Number 2 on the US Billboard charts and has now gone 3X platinum. The album was produced by legendary Tom Dowd and was considered the last of his rocking 70's albums. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Zeus' pick. Send us a Text Message.Danny Saber stops by the podcast to discuss his latest release with the late Micheal Hutchence as well as his relationship with Michael. We discuss how he chose his musical path, other artists he worked with, and more. **** In the great pantheon of musicians transcending above mere “celebrity” status, the late MICHAEL HUTCHENCE towers over most. A consummate “rock star” if there ever was one, he embodied the spirit and smoldering swagger of rock ‘n' roll while possessing one of the most iconic voices in the contemporary music scene. So, it was with an earth-rattling shudder when tragically he passed away in 1997, leaving a mind-numbingly impressive legacy across the entertainment realm. What many didn't know, however, is that he left some of his brilliance behind in the form of unreleased music. Producer, musician, and personal friend DANNY SABER (Madonna, Rolling Stones, U2) has completed some of these musical pieces to continue and extend Hutchence's impact. The new single “ONE WAY” was released, April 5, 2024 via Boss Sonics.“'One Way' is the culmination of nearly two decades of work,” says Saber. “One of the fundamental reasons for releasing this music is to allow the fans to hear Michael's voice on something new and fresh, offering a glimpse into what might have been, and, in turn, reawakening millions of people who may have simply forgotten about him.”“Michael first contacted me in 1995 soon after the release of my album It's Great When You're Straight,” recalls Saber, referring to the UK #1 album by his band Black Grape with Happy Mondays' Shaun Ryder. “Michael was a huge fan of my record and wanted to find the right sound for a solo record, a sound that would galvanize all the success he had with INXS and allow him to establish himself as a solo artist and spread his creative wings outside the confines of being the frontman of one of the most successful bands in the world.”Working closely with Hutchence, the two became friends and creative partners. “Over the next two years, we became very close collaborators, and the period we worked together was one of the best times of my life,” Saber remembers. “I had just broken through with a #1 record and having Michael as a ‘big brother' to help me navigate this was so important to me.”Get your copy of "One-Way" hereMichael Hutchence Picture by Chris CuffaroDanny Saber Picture by Dear KarrPR - REYBEE, INC***If you would like to contact the show about being a guest please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comThis episode is on YouTube: https://youtu.be/-T_3IjUIPPIFollow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomHave a question or want to be a guest on the podcast email: dauna@bettertopodcast.comHave a question for our producer Rich Zei contact him at rich.zei@thirdearaudio.comIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast SuziTo see upcoming guests click here: https://www.dmneedom.com/better-topodcast©2024 Better To...Podcast with D.  My guest this week is producer, musician and remixer Danny Saber. Danny's worked with musical legends like David Bowie, Sheryl Crow, Marilyn Manson, U2, The Rolling Stones, Public Enemy, Willie Nelson, Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper, and Madonna, among many others. He's also contributed to television commercials for McDonald's, Taco Bell and Coors, and soundtracks for films such as “Blade II,” and “Moulin Rouge!.” Most recently Danny's been busy working on some recently discovered songs by the late INXS frontman Michael Hutchence, as well as a documentary on the singer's life. During the interview we spoke about his early band days around Hollywood, getting into remixing, producing the Rolling Stones, why producing a film is way different from composing, hanging with football legend Jim Brown, and much more. I spoke with Danny via Zoom from his studio in Los Angeles. var podscribeEmbedVars = { epId: 106695817, backgroundColor: 'white', font: undefined, fontColor: undefined, speakerFontColor: undefined, height: '600px', showEditButton: false, showSpeakers: true, showTimestamps: true };

With a brand new front man, JD Fortune to record and mix their 11th studio release aptly named Switch, further mixing was completed both at MixStar Studios at Virginia Beach, Virginia and Sphere Studios in London, UK. Nearly 8.5 years since their final recording with Michael Hutchence on Elegantly Wasted, the band wasted no time between September-November 2005 laying down 11 tracks that would represent the dawn of a new era for the band and be the precursor to a World Tour in 2006. Produced by Guy Chambers, formerly with World Party and main Co-Writer with Robbie Williams, he and Andrew Farriss were able to unite and combine for an album that sounded fresh, vital, progressive but with that typical INXS DNA underpinning its sound and sonics. Today, we examine Side One's 5 tracks spearheaded by the international hits that were Pretty Vegas and Afterglow whilst also discussing the narrative, expectations and experiences of other rock bands that have lost front man over their careers whether it be by departure or unfortunate passing. So as the famous line from George Michael's second album denoted, “listen without prejudice” and revel in a time when INXS challenged themselves, the critics and the wider fan base with a new singer, sound and a bunch of songs that heralded a new era for them! Michael Hutchence's sudden death in 1997 at the age of 37 left a hole in the hearts of Australians and the world. His band, INXS, cut their teeth on the lawless pub circuit down under. Three shows a night, from sunrise to sunset. Hundreds of shows a year. The bond that they formed was life-changing for them all, but especially for Michael, whose greatest fear was being alone. And then Michael Hutchence had his life changed for a second time. He was sucker punched by a taxi driver in the street. That attack left him unable to smell or taste. It altered his moods. And it may have had something to do with the final day of his life. This episode contains themes that may be disturbing to some listeners, including suicide.
