Brisbane, Australia's The Saints are responsible for two of the greatest punk albums of all time, in 1977's '(I'm) Stranded' and 1978's 'Eternally Yours.' This November, look for “The Saints '73-‘78” to be touring North America, featuring original members Ed Kuepper and Ivor Hay, along with The Birthday Party's Mick Harvey, the Sunnyboys' Peter Oxley and Mudhoney's Mark Arm, in service of original lead singer Chris Bailey, lost to us in 2022. Additionally, there's a four-LP boxset version of the milestone debut album out, as well as a new solo album from Ed, done in conjunction with Jim White from the Dirty Three, called 'After the Flood.' Check out Goldmine author Martin Popoff interview The Saints guitarist/ vocalist/songwriter Ed Kuepper in a wide-ranging chat that looks at how The Saints dovetailed into the punk movement, along with a fair bit on each of the three albums covered by the upcoming tour, plus a look at the new solo album. We also touch upon the creative differences that led to Ed's split with Chris after the band's controversial third album, 'Prehistoric Sounds,' issued in October of 1978. Horns? Acoustic guitars? Surely The Saints didn't invent punk?! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Send us a Text Message.Nick Cave. After a career that would exhaust a lesser man, he's still recording and performing breathtaking work. Mick's just seen him live with only his piano, and a bass guitar, and can't stop raving! We look at how he started and the difference between his performances and attitudes then and now. In other news, Lenny Kravitz is still sticking to his vow of celibacy, The Police's Andy Summers declares that they were total babes, and The Angels are still releasing new work. Hmmm....... A könyv hazai megjelenése alkalmából a Helikon kiadó Nick Cave-estet szervezett, mely március 30-án zajlott a Három Hollóban könyvbemutatóval, koncerttel, bulival egybekötve. A könyvbemutató az első élő Wanted podcast-felvétel is volt egyben, ahol a könyvet fordító Németh Róbert, a rajongó Lovasi András és a kérdező Bihari Balázs beszélgetett a közönség bevonásával Nick Cave-ről, fordításról, a meg nem valósult 1987-es budapesti koncertről, Warren Ellisről és az autizmusról, Blixa Bargeld gitárjáról, Mick Harvey haragjáról, bibliai képekről, zakókról egészen az október 13-koncertig. A Wanted podcast adása az NKA Hangfoglaló program támogatásával készült.

My guests this week are Mick Harvey & Amanda Acevedo, who join me on the podcast to talk about their forthcoming collaborative album, Phantasmagoria in Blue, which is out via Mute records on 1 September 2023. Harvey, who was a founding member of Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds and The Birthday Party, has worked with a number of hugely talented artists over the years, including PJ Harvey. This is his first collaboration with Mexican artist Amanda Acevedo For more information or to purchase the album visit: https://mutebank.co.uk/collections/mick-harvey Check out their excellent cover of 'Love Is A Battlefield' here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaNdemwGXXU
Mick Harvey - founding member of The Birthday Party, The Bad Seeds and Crime And The City Solution. On top of that, he's done everything from recording two albums of Serge Gainsbourg covers to being long term collaborator with PJ Harvey. Amanda Acevedo was a fan in Mexico who, during lockdown, plucked up courage and asked him if he'd like to work on a song with her. Forward a few years and what started out as a sort of end of the world dare has morphed into an album of duets: Phantasmagoria in Blue. Mick and Amanda talk with Paul about everything from their creative process, which involved the guiding principle of making everything "slow and depressing" to how Nick Cave's love of Karen Carpenter nearly derailed a gig at the Hacienda.Their album, Phantasmagoria in Blue is available 1st September, pre-order here.Lost and Sound is proudly sponsored by Audio-TechnicaPaul's debut book, Coming To Berlin: Global Journeys Into An Electronic Music And Club Culture Capital is out now on Velocity Press. We at INXS Access All Areas love producing every episode and sharing them with you, but sometimes a guest comes along that literally blows it “out of the park”. Bruce Butler, a true music heavyweight and Australian national treasure, is that guest! This two-part deep dive pays particular homage to the greatness of Ollie Olsen, who currently faces the biggest health fight of his life, plus the exciting re-imagined version of “Rooms for the Memory” (an initial 1987 solo number 11 hit for Michael Hutchence via the Dogs in Space soundtrack). Bruce opens up on this exciting initiative that coincidentally was re-recorded on January 22nd 2023 (sounds familiar), including an updated film clip by Richard Lowenstein, plus a cast of many Australian recording artist luminaries like Adalita, Mick Harvey and Andrew Duffield. With a goal of raising funds for Ollie, this exciting project shall see an international release in July and a possible in-store live performance launch. Having also managed The Church, launched Virgin Records in Australia, and set up iconic shows here such as The Factory and Countdown Revolution, Bruce's integrity to project and artist selection is exceptional. Bruce's revelations about meeting Michael Hutchence as teenagers in Sydney, the missing master recordings of Max Q and the plethora of fantastic anecdotes throughout his career make these two episodes a NOT-TO-BE-MISSED experience. Hugo Race in conversation with David Eastaugh http://www.hugoracemusic.com Originally from the 1980's Melbourne post-punk music scene, Hugo began writing for avantgarde theatre in Melbourne after winning a playwriting prize at age 16. Recruited by Nick Cave for his nascent Bad Seeds, he recorded on the first Seeds album and toured the world. Following this full immersion in the global post-punk scene, Hugo returned to Melbourne to create his first major band The Wreckery. Although The Wreckery produced several hit independent Australian singles and some remarkably ahead-of-their-time albums, the band never played outside Australia/NZ. By the end of the 1980s, Hugo had moved to Europe, first to London and then to West Berlin, where Hugo signed a record contract with German indie Normal Records (as Hugo Race & The True Spirit) releasing 5 albums– Rue Morgue Blues, Earls World, Spiritual Thirst, Stations of the Cross and Second Revelator (produced by former Bad Seed bandmate Mick Harvey). In 1995, Hugo signed with German independent label Glitterhouse Records who continue to release his work today with both The True Spirit and the Italy-based Hugo Race Fatalists who have released 3 critically acclaimed albums with a 4th album ‘Taken By The Dream' in 2019. Fatalists' 5th album, Once Upon A Time in Italy, is set for release in 2022.

Robin Williams' breakout film performance wasn't Popeye, and it wasn't Good Morning, Vietnam. It was this small, oddball tragicomedy that landed just around the time Mork from Ork waved goodbye to TV audiences. It's a strange movie, because the very literary novel it's based off of feels like it's fighting itself as a movie script constantly. But the acting is just magical in its softness and craft, with incomparable performances from Glenn Close and John Lithgow. And there's a dreaminess that, despite the efforts of the director and writers, couldn't be completely taken out from this film. In the last two years, farmers have faced shortages of inputs. In 2020, at the beginning Covid-19, farmers faced shortages of herbicides, including glyphosate. Twelve months on, they find themselves in a similar position, this time with phosphates. Mick Harvey joins Wes Lefroy to answer the immediate question of whether farmers will get their phosphate this season and if it's time to rethink when they buy inputs.

A morning like any other, started at the antipodes of tranquillity. You are filled with adrenaline, you show a vain and exhausting restlessness, a sort of Brownian movement. You rush along the path that darkens and narrows as you go along. You start to run like a modern-day Snow White running away from the hunter through the forest. The branches have become hostile and tear your illusions and dreams to shreds. A faint lunar glow illuminates a strange, ragged silhouette through the fog. This is the preacher that you thought came from the drunken imagination of those he frightened. From where you stand, it is impossible for you to know if his phalanxes are tattooed with the antonyms love and hate. In the rain, he throws strange curses, wishing for the release of the bats. They will accompany you to your goal, probable allegories of the ideas that animate you at the moment. Soutenez-nous !
Young Southpaw chats with writer Jeremy Allen about his excellent upcoming Serge Gainsbourg biography, Relax Baby Be Cool. We talk about his meetings with Jane Birkin, Anna Karina, and Mick Harvey, amongst others, for his research. There was so much to cover it us took 38 minutes to get to ‘Je T’aime...’ https://www.hive.co.uk/Product/Jeremy-Allen/Relax-Baby-Be-Cool--The-Artistry-And-Audacity-Of-Serge-Gainsbourg/25438425 twitter.com/jeres instragram.com/jeremiad Jeremy Allen: He was so musically voracious, and acquisitive. He stole from everywhere. And for me, it’s probably that point, from writing about Serge, that I really got into jazz, and I’ve been getting into reggae more. It’s almost like Serge is the touchpoint and I’ve gone further into some of the stuff that he got into, that I probably should have got into before, really. Everything he did really, he kind of stole from black music and Frenchified it. Jazz, to begin with. Then he goes through his rock n roll period, he gets quite into the yé-yé writing, and he does it in a quite cynical way, actually. I guess the only time when he’s sort of listening to white music is when he’s copying swinging Carnaby Street, which is coming from America anyway, coming from rock n roll and rhythm & blues and all that sort of thing. Also, he made an album called Percussions where he ripped off a load of drum beats from Olatunji, this famous Nigerian drummer. It was very naughty because he didn’t credit him or tell him, but he built songs around his rhythms. And then he does reggae... So he did this throughout his career, stealing from black music. And from classical music - Chopin, Ravel, Dvořák... It was very meta, very Dada-ist. I don’t think many people had done that in music at that time. If you listen to a song like ‘Contact’ by Brigitte Bardot - just listen to that song! - it was made in 1968 and it’s like techno thirty years too early. It’s incredible, it blows my mind! You just think ‘wow’, he’s looping, and he’s playing with musique concrète. He was working with Colombier at the time, who had been working with Pierre Schaeffer, I think, so maybe that was where that influence came in. Serge was brilliant at finding people to work with. That’s a real gift. Bowie had it, Madonna for a while, though maybe not so much in recent years. But it’s a real talent in itself to find the right people to work with. But Serge also made all this great music, all this varied music, and right at the center of it was him so he knew what he was doing.

Sometimes with Others klingen zeitlos.

1) “Summer In The City”, Lovin’ Spoonful2) “Rainy Day In June”, The Kinks3) “All Along The Watchtower”, Jimi Hendrix Experience4) “Slim Slow Slider”, Van Morrison5) “Green River”, Creedence Clearwater Revival6) “On The Road Again”, Canned Heat7) “Paris, Texas Theme”, Ry Cooder8) “From Here To Eternity”, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds9) “Every Time I Try”, The Haden Triplets10) “La Bayamesa”, Buena Vista Social Club11) “Soul Of A Man”, Blind Willie Johnson12) “The Rip”, Portishead

Foetus special with JG Thirlwell in conversation with David Eastaugh Thirlwell was born in Melbourne, Australia. He briefly studied Fine Art at Melbourne State College (now part of the University of Melbourne) before moving to London, England in 1978, where he played with the post-punk band prag VEC and formed the first of his numerous musical projects, Foetus. In the 1980s, under the pseudonyms Clint Ruin and Frank Want, he contributed to various releases by Nurse With Wound, Marc Almond, The The and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. He co-wrote "Wings Off Flies" on From Her to Eternity, the first Bad Seeds album. Longtime Nick Cave associate Mick Harvey would later report that Thirlwell's time in the band was cut short, in part, by a clash between Thirlwell's highly structured studio routine as contrasted with Cave's at-the-time habit of "shambling through it" while recording. Thirlwell released his first 7" single, OKFM/Spite Your Face, in 1981, on his own Self-Immolation record label in his first incarnation as Foetus. Over the next few years, he would release two more singles, a 12" EP, and four full-length albums, Deaf, Ache, Hole and Nail (Some Bizzare Records) . After visiting the United States during a live stint with the Immaculate Consumptive (Lydia Lunch, Nick Cave and Marc Almond) Thirlwell settled in New York City, where he is still based. Since his move he has released several singles, fourteen EPs (including Stinkfist, with fellow New York artist Lydia Lunch and Thurston Moore), and seventeen full-length albums. In addition to being a prolific artist in his own right, Thirlwell has remixed and produced numerous pieces for artists including Faith No More, Nine Inch Nails, Pantera, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The The, Zola Jesus and Swans. He has also done voice-over work for MTV and other entities. Since 2000 Thirlwell has become more active as a composer, having written commissions for Bang on a Can, League of Electronic Musical Urban Robots, and the Kronos Quartet, and scoring cartoons The Venture Bros. for Adult Swim and Archer for FX. He also revived his primary instrumental project, Steroid Maximus, and initiated a more experimental instrumental project in Manorexia. He continues to write and perform regularly as a solo artist and with various ensembles. He is also a member of the freq_out sound art collective, and has created solo sound installations in Kaliningrad, Santarcangelo and Vienna.

Jess Ribeiro: Born and raised in Armidale, New South Wales, Ribeiro spent time in Brisbane and Darwin before settling in Melbourne. It was in the Northern Territory that she formed her band The Bone Collectors, with whom she released her first album in 2011, "My Little River". Initially folk-country in tone, her second album "Kill It Yourself" from 2015 took her music into darker, swampier places, produced in collaboration with the legendary Mick Harvey. "Love Hate" is the title of Ribeiro's latest album, released in April of 2019. When her album launch tour stopped in Brisbane a few months ago the Live Delay team were there to capture the whole set, including her charming and frequently amusing stage banter. Recorded live at the Bearded Lady in West End on the 12th of July 2019.

It's Horror Tropes Week on Pod Sematary! Chris and Kelsey get meta talking about some of the best examples of self-aware horror films that exist! (To be sure, there are more...) First up is one we've been talking about since our first episode: 1996's Scream! Wes Craven got a bit meta with 1994's New Nightmare, but that movie only covered the one franchise: Freddy. Then along came Kevin Williamson and the two really got rolling with a film the transformed the whole genre for Generation X (for good or ill). Is this clever classic worth all of the not-so-great imposters? Then it's on to the film that doesn't just want to observe the tropes but tear the whole genre down and start over: 2012's The Cabin in the Woods! Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard bring their experience and wit to address the big questions. Why do characters act like idiots in horror movies? Why only use that great weapon once? And what happens when the audience doesn't get what they expect? Plus: --a trip to Knott's Scary Farm! --the new Pet Sematary trailer! Get more at podsematary.com! Jess Ribeiro: Jess Ribeiro’s career started as a three piece, featuring her long term collaborator Rob Law in the group Jess Ribeiro and the Bone Collectors in the very under represented city of Darwin. Their debut album My Little River won best country album at the 2013 AIR independent label awards. After an amicable creative split with Rob Law, Jess began working on her first solo record with legendary Australian musician, composer, songwriter, arranger Mick Harvey. Her album ‘Kill It Yourself’ was released in august 2015. Recorded live at PBS FM Studios in Melbourne on the 3rd of February 2016. Recorded & Mixed by Paul Maybury & Alicia Saye WAAX: Starting in 2013, WAAX have been pushing everyone out of their way with their raw, punk infused brand of rock. They have rapidly become an act that’s known for their high energy live shows that is partly due to the fear installed by their utterly terrifying and frenzied frontwoman Marie DeVita. In 2015 they released their debut EP Holy Sick and followed it up with an east coast tour that had everyone talking. Recorded live at The Elephant in Brisbane on the 25th of January, 2016. Recorded & Mixed by Branko Cosic Caitlin Park: Caitlin Park writes and performs folktronica, taking folk and electro-acoustics to new heights with her abstract composition, sampling and film nostalgia. Releasing her debut album in 2011, MILK ANNUAL is a sprawling, intricate and heart-warming foray into the soundscapes of old films, audio books, spoken word, and minimalistic musical arrangement. For much of 2012, Caitlin travelled to New York and London, and collected sounds which would appear on her critically lauded 2nd album, 2013’s The Sleeper, which was shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize. Recorded at The Standard in Sydney on the 12th of February, 2014. Recorded by Harvey O'Sullivan & Hugh Fasher, Mixed by Harvey O'Sullivan. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 3rd April 2016. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.
