In part two of this special interview, Bob Babbitt gives his thoughts on triathlon coverage, why long distance coverage doesn't engage with non triathlon fans, his work with the Challenges Athletes Foundation and his friendship with Poncho man. You'll hear 06:00 We talk about the coverage of long distance triathlon, because Bob tweeted after the Ironman St George World Championships: "Triathlon cannot be considered a big time sport until our big events receive rights fees. When that happens everything changes" The problem is that other sports TV pays to broadcast them, golf, Tour de France. At this point, Ironman pays for coverage. And for our sport to get where it needs to be, there needs to be money coming in. Maybe it's pay per view dollars. You aren't going to get terrestrial TV covering 140.6 miles. But it's stories that drive new people into triathlon. In terms of people just watching the pros, will someone pay for that? Will someone pay for 8, 9 10 hours on terrestrial television? 08:12 How does triathlon engage non-triathlon fans? 17:51 Why are people happy to watch a grand-slam tennis final that lasts for 4-5 hours? What is missing from triathlon in comparison? Why do people watch the TdF all day long? 22:42 Does it hurt Bob that triathlon and the athletes don't get the attention that he feels they should? 32:00 Bob talks about the Challenged Athletes Foundation and what it means to him to be and co-founder of it and still heavily involved in changing other people's lives. 35:45 Bob gets choked up when he talks about the friendship between Laura Siddall and Lauren Parker. 42:00 Who will fill Bob's boots with Breakfast with Bob? 43:20 We talk about poncho man Find out more about this week's guests Bob Babbitt https://twitter.com/bob_babbitt (Twitter) Bob Babbitt https://babbittville.com/ (website) https://www.challengedathletes.org/ (Challenged Athletes Foundation) Like what you heard? The History of Rock N Roll Part X - Soundtrack of the Century: 20 Feet from Stardom/Standing in the Shadows of Motown/Muscle Shoals On this week's episode of WatchThis W/RickRamos, Mr. Chavez & I continue our exploration of The World of Rock N Roll with a look at the foundation of any song . . . the bands and the background singers that give every song structure, power, and drive. This week we look at Morgan Neville's 20 Feet From Stardom (2019) - profiling Tata Vega, Judith Hill, Jo Lawry, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer, and the great Darlene Love - Paul Justman's Standing in the Shadows of Motown (2002) - profiling the great Motown backing band The Funk Brothers. composed of: Jack Ashford (percussion), Bob Babbitt (bass), Uriel Jones (drums), Joe Hunter (keyboards), Joe Messina (guitar), Richard "Pistol" Allen (drums), Benny "Papa Zita" Benjamin (drums), Eddie "Bongo" Brown (percussion), Johnny Griffith (keyboards), Earl Van Dyke (keyboards), and Robert White (guitar). Finally, we close out the show with an incredible film showcasing The Birth of the Deep South Soul & Rock N Roll Sound birthed by the great Alabama Producer Rick Hall and FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals Alabama . . . I'm talking about Greg "Freddy" Camalier's Muscle Shoals (2013). An incredible film that showcases the legacy of Hall and the Swampers including: Barry Beckett (keyboards), Roger Hawkins (drums), David Hood (bass), Jimmy Johnson (guitar), Chips Moman (guitar), Junior Lowe (guitar), Dan Penn, Tommy Cogbill, Pete Carr (guitar), and Spooner Oldham (organ and piano). This is a fun episode that will - hopefully - introduce three great films and a host of music that you owe it to yourself to embrace. Take a listen and let us know what you think. In this episode: The New Year is a time for resolutions and one that is frequently made involves losing weight in order to be healthier. But as obesity rates continue to rise unabated researchers have started to question the wisdom of making weight loss the goal and instead are starting to promote being active and fit instead. I take a look at the science in this area and report on how being active is a healthier and more sustainable way to reach your goals. In addition, I have an entertaining conversation with triathlon legend Bob Babbitt. Bob has been around triathlon as long as the sport has been around and he has the stories to prove it. Listen in as he talks about Hawaii before it was what it is today, the growth of the sport and the Challenged Athlete Foundation among just some of the things he has anecdotes to share. “When people are passionate, they will respond, either negatively or positively. If they don't respond at all, that means they didn't give a crap. Be yourself, keep writing content that drives response,” says Bob Babbitt, the IRONMAN Hall of Fame inductee while reminiscing on the best advice he received as a young triathlon journalist. In a wide ranging conversation with Eric Gilsenan on the Beyond Podcast, the two friends discuss Bob's childhood in North Chicago, racing his first IRONMAN in Hawaii in 1980, and how he became involved with supporting challenged athletes.

With the top four ranked male and female athletes being automatically selected for Team Europe, Team International and Team USA, those currently in those qualification spots will be keen to solidify their position. Equally, those not already qualified will be eager to move up in the PTO World Rankings to be eligible for automatic qualification or to impress their Team Captains enough to be chosen as a Captain’s Pick. As with Challenge Daytona in December, this race will also take place on a NASCAR track, the Homestead-Miami Speedway. The women’s pro race is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. ET with the men’s following at 3:15 p.m. ET, and much of the racing action will be centered around the 650-acre speedway venue, which has two lakes, a 1.5-mile oval track, and a 2.2-mile road around it. The pros will be racing a unique distance: a one-mile swim, a 39-mile bike, and a 10.5-mile run. Similarly to Challenge Daytona, this race course will suit those athletes who can hold fast, flat power on the bike as they race a total of 17 laps on the track. The run course involves seven laps. For those wanting to catch all the pro racing action live, you can tune into Challenge Miami’s Facebook page. It will cost $2.99 to watch the pro race. A highlights show of the pro race will also be broadcast on NBCSN on March 18 at 2 p.m. ET, March 21 at noon ET, and March 22 at 2:30 p.m. ET. The age-group races—which take place on Saturday and Sunday—will also be livestreamed on Facebook (for no cost).   Challenge Miami Schedule of Events The Tri Summit (sponsored in part by UCAN) March 17-19, the TriSummit is for triathletes who don’t settle. For triathletes who have a growth mindset, and want to get the most out of themselves as we return to racing in 2021. It doesn’t matter whether the goal is to finish, to PR, or to qualify for Kona or USAT Nationals…what brings triathletes together at TheTriSummit is the pursuit of something greater than who you are today. Hosted by the legendary Bob Babbitt and guest host Dede Griesbauer (Ultraman World Record Holder), you will be taken on a journey with 15 top pro triathletes and experts to learn about curated topics in the sport of triathlon, with a particular focus on how to best emerge from the pandemic to successful racing. Your personal best is ahead of you in 2021.   What's New in the 303: Open Letter From Without Limits on Upcoming Season and New Waitlist Option As the days start to grow longer, that cabin fever has many of you wondering; what will triathlon season look like? Things are starting to move in the right direction for Colorado and the current COVID-Dial 2.0. Just this past week, Jefferson and Broomfield Counties recently moved to Level Blue, and the state enters Vaccine Phase 1B.3 for ages 60+ this Friday. Boulder County (Colorado Tri on June 5th) and Larimer County (XTERRA Lory on June 12th) “should” still safely enter Level Green (500 event limit) by the end of May. We use “should” in quotes, as our goal continues to stay on the side of caution, giving each event the best possible chance to move forward. That being said, we’re placing a 250-athlete cap (Level Blue) on ALL June events. Our new registration provider (TriReg) has a waitlist feature. How does it work? Once we hit the 250 level you’ll be able to register for the waitlist, and it will store your payment info temporarily without charging you. Assuming we hit Level Green, then you’ll be automatically rolled into the event without any additional sign-up needed, receiving an immediate update e-mail. Our goal is to notify all wait list athletes a minimum of 3 weeks prior to race day. Please note, that current 250 capacity level is combined for all distances. Unlike some running events that have been able to stage multiple waves throughout the day, we face unique obstacles such as limited water access, that prevent this option.   PRIMAL & 303 Endurance Indoor Cycling Class, led by Bill Plock Date: Every Wednesday till it warms up Time: 12:00 Noon MST Price: FREE Place: ZOOM (Click Here) ZOOM Passcode: H49LJK Join The Ride   303 Book of the Month We have an oldie but a goodie to recommend, especially as crews begin their climbs up Everest. Skye Moench left her full-time job to follow a belief that she could be good at triathlon. It has proven to be one of her best decisions yet. Her first year as a professional was 2016, but it wasn't until 2018 that she started to feel that she was beginning to tap into her potential. Over the past few years, she gained much familiarity around the podium and put her name on the map in lights when she took the win in Frankfurt and was named the 2019 European Ironman Champion. She followed up that memorable day with a win at Boulder 70.3 some five weeks later. 2019 was no doubt a dazzling year for Skye, and it set her up to land a 2020 PTO ranking of 10th in the world amongst her peers. Her resume is impressive, but for us, it was her energy that captured our attention. We followed her race at the Bear Lake Brawl last year and listened to her share her story with Bob Babbitt just days before claiming a 6th place finish at Challenge Daytona, which was arguably the most competitive field we've ever seen in the sport.  We hope you enjoy this episode and give Skye a follow if you are not already; her energy is contagious. In this episode, we discuss: - using willpower to get out of a funk - racing the Oscars of triathlon - living the best you can with what you have - rough conditions at Bear Lake Brawl - how PTO has impacted professional triathlon - remembering your "why" in the face of rejection - the need for wake-up calls in life - training based on "feel" - the value of training in community - the importance of nutrition for attaining big goals - the power of being well-fueled and in a good mental state - being your own biggest cheerleader We recognize our Patreon community for their support. Bob Babbitt is, simply put, the lightning rod of the endurance world. In 1980, he participated in his first IRONMAN on the island of O'ahu, Hawaii, and has been making history ever since. He'd never call himself an elite athlete and yet, he's a member of the USA Triathlon and IRONMAN Triathlon Halls of Fame. Why? Because he believes that sport is essential for all and changes lives every day. His name is synonymous with the sport of triathlon along with his long-running Babbittville podcast, radio, and tv show. In fact, it is Babbitt, more than anyone, who has given voice and image to this crazy event in Hawaii that no one could really wrap their mind around. He is the heartbeat of multisport/triathlon and, in our sport’s story, is the main character. Nope. He's the hero. Through his efforts, he has exposed endurance sports to everyone - literally - everyone, as co-founder of Challenged Athletes Foundation, founder of Competitor Magazine, and more. "When you go from your gut and when you go from your passions, things seem to work out," he says in today's interview. "Sport makes you better at everything you do." This mantra is the heart of the Performance Reset 2020 - experts and companies sharing their thoughts on the role of sport because, make no mistake, sport is powerful. You might be feeling rudderless. You might be tired of this carnival and the uncertainty. But, we have no doubt you have a performance-driven mindset. You may or may not identify as an athlete, but you can learn and thrive by applying elements of the athletic mindset. Bob and all of the hosts and experts are here to help you develop your performance toolkit in 2021. Join us and let's keep everyone in the game of life through sport. Bob Babbitt, Ironman Hall of Fame and USA Triathlon Hall of Fame inductee, and co-founder of Challenged Athletes Foundation and Competitor Magazine joins THE BRINK OF MIDNIGHT PODCAST.  Bob Babbitt is the ultimate connector, cheerleader, and seeker - of great ideas, people, and causes. His name is a part of triathlon and endurance racing history in the United States, and while he's helped grow anything run-bike-swim, he's also made it accessible to all levels and abilities. Bob co-founded Competitor Magazine, which just celebrated it's 30th anniversary, with the goal of shining a light on the sports of triathlon, cycling, and running while bringing people together for fun and competitive events. Out of Competitor, he co-founded Challenged Athletes Foundation, which has raised over 80 million dollars in grant money for challenged athletes and helped so many discover sport again or even go on to compete and medal in the Paralympics. His group bought and grew the entire Rock n Roll Marathon Series to become one of the coolest running and music experiences out there. He also created the Muddy Buddy series, a fun and challenging adventure obstacle race to benefit charities. Bob has truly done it all and he's not done yet!  Bob teaches us to stick with our big ideas, especially when they might seem impossible, and to seek out the experiences that will change our lives. Taking a leap of faith is the most important step to grow, learn, and make an impact in your life and in your community.  For full show notes, visit: Contact: Connect: @brinkofmidnight (twitter, instagram, Facebook)

The Pace Of Change Speedgolf Podcast: Broadcasting The Evolution of Speedgolf In The 21st Century

As a multisport pioneer and media mogul, and someone who popularized Speedgolf in the 90's, Bob Babbitt is somebody I'm trying to become like. So if you've listened to previous podcasts, this episode will feel a bit different in nature. First of all, Bob called me from his radio station, so even though I was technically doing the interview, it sounds like he's the host and I'm the guest on the line. I usually try to keep the listener in mind during a podcast, and a list of relevant questions to ask, but with Bob, all that went out the window. It quickly became a personal phone call, a mentoring session in a way, that we forgot we were recording. From someone who's already done it, to someone who wants to do it, this episode contains a blueprint for growing golf in the 21st century by doing what he said in the intro: changing perceptions. Namely, Golf is a fitness sport.
