For many years, before formalized childbirth education class, knowledge of birth was transferred to expectant parents through birth stories from members of their community and families. Birth stories can continue to contribute to the preparation and confidence for one's upcoming birth and offer personal stories and real human interactions rather than a medical account of the experience. In this episode of Yoga|Birth|Babies, I speak with founder of The Birth Hour, Bryn Huntpalmer. Bryn explains the importance of having the opportunity to share one's birth story with little interruptions and commentary. She also discusses the common thread she has noticed in over 600 birth stories. Lastly, Bryn shares a bit of her own birth stories. This week on One Bad Mother, Biz and Theresa ponder the stereotype of mothers….not the ethereal, magical vessel image…its the hunched, broken, shell of a person image. Is it avoidable? Is it too late? Or is there some place in between the deep end and the impossible vision of self put upon perfection? We hope that place has snacks. Plus Biz lives her parenting dream, Theresa gives us a window into her world and we talk to Bryn Huntpalmer of the podcast The Birth Hour. In today's story: Little Nathan loves his days with his mother and father. He loves their attention, he loves their snuggles and he loves playing with them ... when they are able to play. When he learns that his parents are going to have another baby, he is initially excited and imagines that he will have a playmate. But then he notices that things are changing in the house - changes that he doesn't like. Luckily Maggie, the Tulip Tree Elf, offers a perspective on the coming changes that helps him not only feel more welcoming to the baby - but honored to become something very very special: a big brother. *This story is the subject of our conversation with Bryn Huntpalmer, host of the audio podcast, "The Birth Hour."* About SparkleCast: SparkleCast explores the use of story in parenting and education. A little about our guests. Bryn and Richard consider themselves nomads. In the last several years they have had 12 addresses including selling everything and living in an RV for a while. This is their third time living in Austin, their current home base. Bryn and Richard are married, together 8 years and have 2 children – a son and daughter. A little about their business. Bryn set out to create The Birth Hour after researching and reading everything she could about giving birth when she was pregnant with her first child. Each podcast is the birth story of one woman, sharing her experiences and what it was like for her. Richard is the producer and the “back of the house” guy for the podcast. He helps Bryn put it all together and get the podcast out. These beautiful and different stories are empowering for the women who share them and for the listeners as new moms or moms to be. One piece of advice (the nutshell version) Make small, achievable goals and build momentum. If you’re in the dreaming or starting stage of creating something, just go for it. Stop putting it off. Things will fall into place.
