HT2639 - Paralyzing Success Here is a problem I've never had before. In the last 18 months, I've had extraordinary success. I've captured 6,700 images of which I've identified a few dozen that have technical issues I can't resolve. Of the remaining, I've flagged a couple hundred as unsuccessful compositions. That still leaves me with over 6,000 images I could turn into single winners or images in projects. Seriously, 6000 images. I'm overwhelmed, stuck, have no idea where to begin, frustrated, and a little lost. For example, I have over 1,000 lovely shots of yellow and orange aspens. What do I do with 1,000 yellow and orange aspens? This RSS feed includes only the most recent seven Here's a Thought episodes. https://www.uncommen.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/May-22nd.mp3 The Weight of the Rearview Mirror There is a familiar, exhausting sentiment echoed by men all over the country when they honestly assess their lives. It sounds exactly like this: “I have made so many mistakes; I am just trying to keep my head down and get through the day.” These men are operating in pure survival mode, carrying a massive, invisible backpack filled with yesterday's failures, missed opportunities, and moral blunders. They believe that their history permanently disqualifies them from spiritual leadership. But this defeated posture is a direct assault on the gospel. Understanding the biblical reality of letting go of the past is not just a self-help strategy; it is a fundamental requirement for stepping into the calling God has placed on your life. Far too many guys spend their days constantly looking in the rearview mirror. We replay our worst moments over and over again in our heads, engaging in imaginary arguments in the shower about things that happened five, ten, or even twenty years ago. We are completely convinced that everyone around us is constantly judging us for our past. But the harsh, realistic truth is that human beings are inherently self-absorbed. Most people are not thinking about your failures because they are entirely consumed with worrying about their own. If you want to change the trajectory of your family, you have to stop living in the past and start operating in the reality of God's grace. Letting go of the past means refusing to let a dead version of yourself dictate the decisions of the man you are called to be today. Distinguishing Between Healthy Reflection and Paralyzing Regret When we talk about letting go of the past, we are not suggesting you develop spiritual amnesia. There is a massive, critical difference between healthy reflection and paralyzing regret. Healthy reflection looks back at a massive failure, extracts the necessary wisdom, applies the painful lesson, and leaves the emotional baggage at the foot of the cross. It is looking in the rearview mirror just long enough to make sure you are changing lanes safely. Paralyzing regret, on the other hand, is staring into the rearview mirror so intensely that you inevitably crash the car you are currently driving. Think about the mentality required to play cornerback in the NFL. A defensive back can get completely beaten on a route, giving up a massive touchdown in the biggest game of the year. If that player dwells on that failure, if he lets that single play define his identity, he will get absolutely torched on the very next snap. To survive at an elite level, a cornerback must possess an incredibly short memory. Overcoming failure requires that exact same mental discipline. You have to learn from the blown coverage, make the necessary adjustment, and completely reset your mind for the next play. Letting go of the past is an active, ongoing discipline of resetting your mind to the truth of Scripture rather than the truth of your feelings. When you refuse to have a short memory regarding your forgiven sins, you are effectively telling God that His grace is insufficient. You are claiming that your specific brand of failure is somehow too complex or too terrible for the cross to cover. That is not humility; that is spiritual arrogance. Overcoming failure starts with acknowledging that Christ's sacrifice was entirely sufficient to cover every single one of your missteps. The Apostle Paul and the Art of Forgetting If anyone had a legitimate reason to be paralyzed by their history, it was the Apostle Paul. Before his radical encounter with Christ, Paul was actively hunting down and murdering Christians. He was holding the coats of the men who stoned Stephen to death. Yet, when Paul writes to the church, he does not write from a place of paralyzing guilt. In Philippians 3:13-14, he outlines the ultimate strategy for letting go of the past: “But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Notice that Paul uses active, aggressive language. He is not passively waiting to feel better about his history; he is purposefully straining forward. Forgetting what lies behind does not mean Paul literally erased the memory of his sins. It means he systematically stripped those memories of their power to dictate his present identity. Letting go of the past is the conscious decision to stop allowing your history to act as a judge over your future. When the enemy tries to drag you backward to remind you of your past, your immediate response must be to confidently remind him of his eternal future. We often fail at letting go of the past because we try to white-knuckle our way through sanctification. We believe that if we just try harder, if we punish ourselves enough with guilt, we will somehow earn our redemption. But the gospel explicitly states that we are a new creation. When you step into a relationship with Christ, you get a clean slate. You do not receive a license to sin, but you absolutely receive the freedom to stop living in the past. If the God of the universe has chosen to cast your sins as far as the east is from the west, who are you to continually dig them back up? Shrinking God to the Size of Our Problems One of the primary reasons men struggle with letting go of the past is our deeply ingrained habit of worrying about the future consequences of our past mistakes. We look at a blunder in our marriage or a misstep in our parenting and immediately spiral into a catastrophic panic. Statistically, the vast majority of the things we relentlessly worry about never actually come to pass. Yet, we allow these phantom anxieties to entirely dictate our moods and our actions. When we operate in this constant state of panic, we are actively shrinking God down to the size of our problems. We look at a financial failure or a broken relationship and mistakenly conclude that the Creator of the universe is somehow unequipped to handle it. We treat God like a distant observer rather than an active, all-powerful Father. Letting go of the past requires you to radically enlarge your view of God. It means trusting that He is fully capable of redeeming your worst moments and using them for His ultimate glory. Think about the story of Jonah. He actively ran from God, heading in the exact opposite direction of his calling, and ended up bringing a massive, life-threatening storm upon everyone around him. When we refuse to deal with our failures, when we try to outrun our guilt, we inevitably bring chaos into our own homes. Stop running. Letting go of the past means you have to stop hiding in the bottom of the boat and willingly face the storm. Acknowledge the failure, repent, and trust that God controls the wind and the waves. The Power of the Pivot: Changing Your Ending There is an absolute, undeniable power in the pivot. It is a fundamental truth that you cannot change the beginning of your story. You cannot undo the times you lost your temper, the times you prioritized work over your children, or the times you compromised your integrity. But regardless of how poorly you started, it is never too late to radically change the ending of your story. Overcoming failure is not about achieving sudden, flawless perfection; it is about taking immediate, incremental steps in the right direction. It is realizing that every single day you wake up is a fresh opportunity to pivot toward Christ. You have the authority, through the power of the Holy Spirit, to course-correct. Letting go of the past involves a daily, sometimes hourly, surrender. It means that when you inevitably stumble, you do not throw your hands up and quit. You confess it, you leave it at the cross, and you aggressively get back to work. When men finally grasp this concept, the transformation in their homes is staggering. A father who is actively letting go of the past is a father who can offer genuine grace to his children when they make mistakes. He does not hold his family to an impossible standard of perfection because he intimately knows his own desperate need for a Savior. Stop living in the past, because your family desperately needs you fully present in the here and now. They do not need a flawless father; they need a forgiven father who is relentlessly pursuing Jesus. Generational Course-Correction Your decision regarding whether or not to embrace letting go of the past has massive, generational implications. Families are often caught in devastating cycles of anger, absence, and apathy. A father who was abandoned by his own dad often struggles with emotional absence in his own home. A man who grew up in a household defined by explosive rage will likely battle the exact same temper. These generational cycles will continue to destroy legacies until a man finally stands up and declares, "This stops with me." Addressing these deep-rooted issues is incredibly painful, messy work. It requires you to look honestly at the brokenness you inherited and the brokenness you have perpetuated. But you are not a victim of your biology, and you are not condemned to repeat the sins of your fathers. Through Christ, you possess the divine authority to break those cycles permanently. Letting go of the past is the exact mechanism that allows you to stop passing down your unhealed wounds to your children. When you actively practice letting go of the past, you are building a completely new bridge for your family to walk across. You are taking the raw materials of your failures, handing them over to the ultimate Architect, and allowing Him to construct a legacy of grace, resilience, and faith. You must use your past blunders as stepping stones for empathy and instruction, rather than allowing them to be a concrete wall that isolates you from your wife and kids. ...

7 takeaways from this study “Do not fear” is a recurring biblical instruction, encouraging believers to trust in God's presence and guidance through all challenges. Trials and hardships serve as refining experiences that strengthen character, deepen faith, and prepare individuals for future deliverance. True courage is not the absence of fear but moving forward in faith despite fear — acting rather than being paralyzed. Maintaining a “fear of the Lord” means valuing the relationship with God and seeking to avoid anything that would harm that connection, rather than fearing punishment. Preparedness and vigilance — both spiritually and practically — are key to navigating adversity and supporting faith with disciplined action. Community support, mutual encouragement and accountability are vital for overcoming fear and standing strong together in faith. Resilience through God's love ensures that no external trial or hardship can separate believers from His presence and purpose. One of the Bible's most resonant instructions is, “Do not fear.” In Hebrew, it’s “אַל־תִּירָא” al-tira. This phrase and its variations thread through the stories of Israel, the teachings of the prophets, the words of Messiah Yeshua (Christ Jesus), and on into the Apostolic Writings. This journey is more than academic. It's personal and communal, rooted in the movements of our people and echoed in our own individual walks. The exhortation to trust Adonai (the LORD) despite what surrounds us is as timely today as it was in the days when Israel's back was to the sea. Let's walk through these scriptures, lessons, and our lived experience, finding inspiration to live al-tira — without fear — anchored in faith, hope and love. Standing firm when boxed in: Lessons from the Torah This study focuses on Exodus 13–15, as Israel was hemmed in at the edge of the sea. It’s an archetype for the moments when we too are boxed in by circumstances. “But Moses said to the people, ‘Do not fear! Stand by and see the salvation of the LORD (יְשׁוּעַת יְהוָה Yeshuat Adonai) which He will accomplish for you today…'” Exodus 14:13 NASB95 Notice that Israel wasn't told to whip up courage by their own strength, but instead to “stand” — to trust in Adonai's deliverance יְשׁוּעַ Yeshua (“salvation”). In fact, throughout the wilderness, from the Red Sea to Sinai and onward, the phrase al-tira is repeated. If you count each variation — including the times Adonai (YHWH, the LORD) commissioned יְהוֹשֻׁעַ Yehoshua (Joshua, “Yah is salvation”) — it appears at least 14–15 times. Each time, it addresses a real threat and a real fear, but points the response straight at faith. “Do not fear or be dismayed.” Deuteronomy 1:21 NASB95 This is more than literary repetition. It's a compassionate, fatherly reassurance that speaks not only to our heads, but to our hearts and our whole life. The Festival of Sukkot: Hope and dwelling with God Just over a month ago we celebrated סֻכּוֹת Sukkot (Festival of Tabernacles), the festival remembering God's dwelling (שָׁכַן shakan, “to dwell”) with us. Sukkot is about hope — about God's ultimate desire to restore what was lost in the Garden of Eden, to reconnect Heaven and Earth. This “tabernacling” — God pitching His tent among mankind (John 1:14) —reminds us that His presence is the antidote to fear. Even today as we recall these truths, we can find freedom in knowing that the goal isn't merely to escape danger, but to dwell with the Creator, to be led as Israel was by the pillar: “a pillar of leading both in front of and as a barrier behind.” God's presence shields and guides. Refining through trials: Hardship, maturity, glory One of my biggest takeaways is that fear isn't merely something to banish; trials are a refining process. We read in Exodus 15:2: “The LORD is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation.” Each hardship, each moment when resources run out and we come to the end of ourselves, is an invitation to honor and glorify God. These moments press us into deeper reliance on Him. Trials refine us. They build us. They help us to mature. This refining isn't easy — but it brings us to “stand by and see Yeshuat Adonai” — “the salvation of the LORD.” Just as in ancient times, we're invited to see that our salvation is not our own doing. Hebrew wordplay: Fear, seeing, ‘fear of the LORD’ In our study, we uncovered a fascinating play on Hebrew words. The verbs “to fear” (יָרֵא yareʼ) and “to see” (רָאָה raʼah) share similar letters. The same three letters (י-ר-א) show up in both concepts — notably, with the verb inflection יַרְא yare, “he saw” — suggesting that seeing the LORD, being aware of His presence, is fundamental to having the right kind of fear, of reverence. Many prophets warned that rebellious people in Israel claimed Adonai doesn’t see what they were doing, yet indeed the LORD does see. A healthy “fear of the LORD” (יִרְאַת יְהוָה Yirat Adonai) is not about being frightened, but about living in the awareness that God sees, knows — and cares. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 1:7 It's a relational fear — a deep respect for not wanting to break connection with God, more than dreading His judgment. Salvation, Yom Kippur & the limits of human offerings Almost two months ago when we celebrated יוֹם כִּפּוּר Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, it was clear: even all the sacrifices and acts at the מִשְׁכָּן Mishkan (“dwelling place,” i.e., the Tabernacle”) cannot cover every transgression. The ultimate lesson is clear — salvation (יְשׁוּעָה yeshuah) is only from the LORD, and His Yeshua. On Yom Kippur, we recognize that none of our own efforts can truly bridge the gap. It is only by God’s grace and initiative. From Sinai to the Promised Land: Remembering Who fights for us As Israel moved through the wilderness, again and again comes this refrain: “Do not fear.” Whether it was crossing the Red Sea, standing before the walls of Jericho, or facing kings like Og and Sihon, and the inhabitants of Canaan, the challenge was the same: Will we trust ourselves, or the God who fights for us? “Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble at them, for the LORD your God is the one who goes with you. He will not fail you or forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6 NASB95 The lesson? Deliverance is from God, and He alone brings the victory when we are at our limits. Courage in the face of suffering: From Torah to Apostolic Writings Our discussion brought us forward into the Apostolic Writings (בְּרִית חֲדָשָׁה Brit Chadasha), aligning with themes of endurance through suffering and the power of Messiah's resurrection. Messiah Yeshua (Jesus) echoes the same instruction: “Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Matthew 10:28 NASB95 Apostle Sha'ul (Paul) reminded his disciple Timothy: For God has not given us a spirit of timidity (δειλίας deilias, “cowardice”), but of power and love and discipline. 2Timothy 1:7 NASB95 Through these passages, we see that God's spirit cultivates strength, love and self-control — not paralyzing fear. Martyrdom, witness, endurance Martyrs, empowered by God, have stood firm in the face of persecution. The Greek word μαρτυρία martyria means “witness.” Martyrdom, in this sense, is the ultimate testimony of faith that light shines brightest in the darkness. Even when external freedoms are stripped away, true victory is choosing faithfulness over fear — just as the apostles did, preaching the Good News despite threats. The fear of the LORD as relationship, not terror The kind of fear God desires is a relational awe, not servile terror. Think of it like a marriage or a close friendship. A healthy relationship is not built on dread of punishment, but a healthy concern not to damage the bond. It is really healthy to fear that the relationship and connection will be broken because of actions we take. This aligns with a deep dive into true love by the apostle Yokhanan (John): There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love. 1John 4:18 NASB95 This “fear” — φόβος phobos — is not what God desires. Instead, He asks for love that leads to obedience, reverence, and deep relationship. Moving from paralysis to purpose: Acting in faith despite fear Courage is not as the absence of fear, but as acting in faith regardless of it. It's doing the thing that God put in front of us. So don't be paralyzed by fear. Instead, train yourself, prepare and choose steps of faith. “Do not be fainthearted. Do not be afraid….” Deuteronomy 20:3 In our own lives, this means having a plan — whether for emergencies, spiritual battles, or daily challenges. Preparedness and vigilance: Working together After the return of Israel’s exiles from Babylon/Persia under Nehemiah, those rebuilding Jerusalem's walls “carried their load with one hand doing the work and the other holding a weapon…” (Nehemiah 4:17–18). The lesson is twofold: trust God, but also be prepared. Practical vigilance — both spiritual and physical — is not a lack of faith, but an outworking of it. As we stand together, each with our skills — some “building,” some “watching out,” some “encouraging,” and all praying — we create a community where all are safer, stronger, and more supported. Paul's “armor of God” metaphor (Ephesians 6) builds on this: put on the whole armor, gird yourself with truth, faith, and the sword of the Word. Endurance and the ministry of reconciliation Sometimes, we're called to endure rather than to withdraw. Paul, about to face chains in Jerusalem (Acts 21), declared: “I am ready not only to be bound, but even to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Yeshua” (Acts 21:13, paraphrased). Our group considered: when should we endure? When is it time to step away? Yeshua's teaching in Matthew 18 gives a process for reconciliation — attempting peace, but recognizing that at times, withdrawing or escalating a matter is necessary. The goal: endurance that seeks reconciliation where possible, with forgiveness and a heart to let go of vengeance. Community, boundaries and discernment We recognized the importance of boundaries — drawn from Torah's instructions on immovable boundary stones (Deuteronomy 19:14). In our relationships, staying “vigilant as serpents and innocent as doves” (Matthew 10:16) is just as important. We want to serve and love, but also discern and guard our own spiritual and emotional well-being. Discernment doesn't mean suspicion; it means wisdom, humility, and responsible stewardship, especially for those in leadership. Resilience: Nothing can separate us from God's love There’s a triumphant promise in Romans 8: “But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Messiah Yeshua our Lord.” Romans 8:37–39 This is resilience — not denial of trials, but knowing that the worst the world can do cannot remove us from His love and purpose. Living al-tira “Do not fear” — “Al-tira.” Life's seas may seem impassable, walls may seem insurmountable, and adversity may threaten to paralyze us. But in every situation, God's call is to stand, trust, and move forward in faith. Through suffering or deliverance, through trial or triumph, we are to remember that the LORD is our strength, our shield, and our salvation. Let us encourage one another to be courageous — not because of our own might, but because of Yeshuat Adonai, the salvation of the LORD, goes before us and with us. Let's practice vigilance, invest in community, set wise boundaries, pursue reconciliation, and — most importantly — treasure the relationship with our Father above all. May we trust, endure, and rejoice, knowing that nothing can separate us from His love. We all strive to live lives of purposeful faith, echoing this across generations: “Do not fear. Stand and see the salvation of the LORD.”

My intention inside this episode is to invite us to re-calibrate inside our desire. As we search for safety, predictability and control, we can find ourselves impulsively grabbing for the tools of white supremacy culture in an attempt to catch our breath and find our footing once more. We extend deep compassion to ourselves for this reflex, with fascism, state sanctioned violence and the question of survival riding the air, it is no surprise that we may breathe in fear with our latest inhale. Inside this episode we exhale, remembering the tools of white supremacy culture are incompatible with the worlds we are building. The classrooms we're spinning up in mid air, the apothecaries getting their start in our gardens growing into neighborhood pharmacies, the basements we're turning into movie theaters streaming love, love, love. And before we know it, we're impulsively picking up tools of a different kind. Tools for tending to a culture of care, where black life is sacred and shared vulnerability is more appealing than isolating in fear.ResourcesRegister for free to the brand new workshop, “Erotically Engineer Your Paid Creative Offering”: https://www.seedaschool.com/offerSubscribe to the Seeda School Substack: https://seedaschool.substack.com/Follow Ayana on Instagram: @ayzacoFollow Ayana on Threads: @ayzacoFollow Seeda School on Instagram: @seedaschoolCitations“White Supremacy Culture” by Tema OkunThe Nap Ministry Post on Threads“The dream is the truth. Ep. 227: A devastating injury during the National Championship game left Robert paralyzed from the neck down. Told he'd never walk again, he began a new journey, one fueled by his three-word mantra: “Compared to what?” Robert shares how that question helped him shift from victimhood to victory—and how you can use the same mindset to lead through adversity. In this episode, you'll learn: Why asking “Compared to what?” cuts big challenges down to size. How to reframe your pain into purpose and lead from a place of strength. What it means to truly forgive—and how it frees your energy to focus forward. “Even with the good, you know, the bad is going to always come. And I will always say block out the outside noise. You only control what you can control." Derek Stingley Jr's advice from his father Special episode to kick off Super Bowl week as Ryan, Channing and Fred sit with a football family spanning three NFL generations. Louisiana natives nick-named Big Sting and Little Sting-Derek Stingley Sr. and Derek Stingley Jr. chat about legacy of their family name in football, dealing with heartache, overcoming unimaginable challenges, the sacrifices it takes to reach the highest level of the game and how to stay at the top once you are there. Derek Stingley Jr, Houston Texans' All Pro Cornerback, is one of the most explosive and skilled players in the NFL, going from a stand out at LSU and part of the 2019 National Championship team to now paving his own path as one of the top defensive players in the league while living out the legacy of his family name. But the young Stingley's football story started long ago. His father shares the story of Sting's grandfather, Darryl Stingley, whose career was tragically cut short after a paralyzing hit in an NFL preseason game. Derek Stingley Sr recalls watching the hit that would forever alter their family's life and despite the trauma of his father's injury, Stingley Sr. never ran from football. He explains that his father instilled in him the mindset that “as football players, we assume the risks'," and this same mentality was passed down to his son, Stingley Jr who shares in the memories of his late grandfather, his approach to the game and how his own dad's tough coaching prepared him for the NFL level now. As a proud father, Stingley Sr understands its the 1% of the 1% who make it to the NFL but recalls the "this is different" moment when he first saw something special in his son, Derek Jr while coaching him as a young boy who always wanted to match up against the older kids and thrived on competition. “I stood back there with my hands on my hair like, oh my God, like, how could somebody that young do that or think that?". Stingley Jr. reflects on his journey to the NFL, from his time at LSU, where he was regarded as the best player on the team as a freshman on a National championship team that featured Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson. He and his father discuss how they handled the outside noise whether it's praise or criticism. When it comes to on-the-field matchups, Stingley Jr. breaks down his first experiences in the NFL, discussing the speed of the game, going against elite quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes, and recognizing the talent of practice squad players who don't get the credit they deserve. He assesses his season, believing he could have had far more interceptions, showcasing the high expectations he holds for himself. Having played the Kansas City Chiefs twice this year, Sting shares what he thinks the Philadelphia Eagles must do to slow down the man in red and white wearing #15 looking for his 3rd back to back title in Super Bowl LIX. Stingley Jr. reflecting on what he wants his legacy to be, stating that when people hear his name, he wants them to say he made his family proud. With a father and grandfather whose legacies are woven into football history, He understands the weight of his last name but instead of running from it, he embraces it. This episode is a true testament to family, resilience, and the pursuit of greatness. The Stingley's story is more than just football, It's about overcoming adversity, honoring legacy, and building something that lasts beyond the game. [Original airdate: 4/2/24] Mary Danielsen talks with Mike Gendron and ministering to those who are held captive by religious duty and obligation, things that have no effect in remediating the sin that we are all born with. Mike takes no hostages as he delineates those issues such as good works, baptismal regeneration, and the bedrock issues that Roman Catholics have with the inerrancy of God's Word. We will talk about religious zeal without knowledge and the numbness of heart and soul that results in false hope and being inoculated to the truth. Mike was a devout Roman Catholic for over 30 years, but that changed in 1981 while attending an evangelical seminar when he realized the Bible is the supreme authority for knowing truth.
