They can also be quite a distraction when out with friends at a restaurant — IYKYK. They're always grabbing things on the table or dropping their toys and you're constantly having to pick them up from that dirty (yucky) floor. But new mom, Beth Fynbo, was over it. So after searching Amazon for a solution (and not finding one), she decided to just create something that she and her best friend and their Littles could enjoy. Meet Beth Fynbo. Beth is an Army veteran and creator of the Busy Baby Mat. Busy Baby has a line of products that keep baby's things within reach and off the floor at home and on the go — Mom-invented, baby-approved. In this episode, Beth takes us through her journey from an idea that wasn't initially intended to go to market to how an accidental email landed her a spot in the tank — yeah, the Shark Tank. She tells us how her 10-year Army career prepared her for entrepreneurial life, how she convinced her brother to quit his job to help her run Busy Baby, and how creative she got to fund the business in the early days with pitch competitions where she won over $100,000 in prize money. Adding another product to my list of things I wish I had when my kids were little today -- all thanks to our guest, Beth Fynbo! Beth is the founder of Busy Baby Mat, which helps make life a little easier for Busy Parents everywhere! Beth starts off telling me about her childhood and seeing her dad run his own business, and how she knew at a young age she wanted to do something on her own as well. She then went on to serve 10 years in the Army and when she found herself back into a 'normal' routine, she could not get comfortable in the corporate world. After having her first child, she had a big wake up call -- she didn't want someone else experiencing his 'firsts'! It took a hectic dinner with fellow mom friends to give her the aha moment! She realized that kids are CONSTANTLY throwing things on the floor and forcing their parents to pick them up. She came up with the idea to create a mat to keep them occupied after she found it did not exists! Since Beth did not come from the toy industry, she really jumped in and took things piece by piece, slowly working towards the next step and asking 'what should i do to get to the next phase'. I found this so refreshing as it can be SO overwhelming to see your end goal and all the space in between you and that spot! She then tells me about her current day to day, how life has changed as her business has grown and how her family plays a role in all of this! She then tells me how her brother is not a part of the company and how that came to be. Finally we chat about her Shark Tank experience, and the insane way that things happened! Beth is such an easy person to talk to and it was so fun learning from her experiences. Make sure to check out her Busy Baby Mats as well as their other products, and head to her Instagram to follow along!

After 10 years in the Army and 10 years in Corporate America, Beth Fynbo finally met her perfect match and started a family at the age of 40. Just a few months after her first son was born she had an idea for a simple baby product that would solve a problem all new parents experience, the constant dropping, and throwing of toys. The Busy Baby Mat is a placemat that suctions to surfaces and has a tether system to keep toys attached and off the floor. In the past 4 years, she has taken that idea all the way to the market and ABC's Shark Tank! With the constant goal of making life easier with a Busy Baby, Beth has also developed an all-in-one teether and training spoon and will soon be releasing a mini version of the mat. Beth's goal is not just to make life easier for parents with her innovative products, but also to inspire other moms with great ideas to go for it! Not only will we hear the story of how Busy Baby came to be, but we'll learn how Beth has used her practice of manifestation and gratitude to bring about some pretty amazing life goals and achievements. Joining me in this episode is Beth Fynbo - the Founder of Busy Baby! Busy Baby is the company behind a nifty thing called the Busy Baby Mat and was born out of seeing first hand how difficult it can be when your baby is old enough to start grabbing at things on a table. Beth was a new mum at 40 and looking for products to help her and her friends as new mums, but struggled to find exactly what she had in her mind. She started creating a prototype for her product at home and then set about finding someone to help her bring this idea to life. We’re talking about the specific steps she took to validate her idea - which was pure genius, how much of her savings she needed to get started, the problems she faced when she started the patent process, what it’s like going through the target accelerator program and the exacts steps she took to grow from 100k in yearly revenue to $1m in sales all the while being a one-woman show. In 2013, Tyler Haney was a 24-year-old graduate of the Parsons School of Design in New York. One day on a jog, she realized that her workout outfits looked, and felt, like they were made for competitive athletes. Tyler envisioned a brand of athletic wear for more everyday activities, like walking the dog or hiking with friends. She launched Outdoor Voices and she got her two-piece "kit" — a crop top and leggings – into a few specialty boutiques. Soon afterward, her brand made it into J. Crew stores and took off. Today, Outdoor Voices has raised close to $60 million from investors and has around 350 employees. PLUS in our postscript "How You Built That," after a lunch with some new moms turned into baby bedlam, Beth Fynbo created Busy Baby Mat — a placemat that would securely stick on any table, keep toys off the floor, and provide a fun surface for babies to eat and draw.

This week on the podcast we listen in to the audio from the most recent 1 Million Cups Rochester featuring local mom, veteran, and founder Beth Fynbo of Busy Baby LLC. Inspired by her father’s welding business, Fynbo always wanted to start a business, but just needed to find her passion. After graduating from high school, she spent ten years in the US Army “living an exciting life with a lot of twists and turns.” “But the biggest twist of all came last year when at age forty I had my son and I found my passion. I wanted to start my own business because I wanted to have control of my own life so that I could be more present in his,” explained Fynbo. As a solo entrepreneur, Fynbo is in the pre-revenue, pre-manufacturing stage of Busy Baby LLC with the startup’s flagship product, the Busy Baby Mat. This product is a 100% FDA approved silicone placemat that suctions to the bottom of surfaces and contains a proprietary tether system to attach baby’s toys, utensils, and other items so they remain connected to the mat and not on the floor. The Busy Baby Mat has been market tested by local babies. After getting this initial product to market, Fynbo plans to develop upgraded mats, such as products with LED lighting. The business could also expand the original product to secondary markets, including adults with Parkinson’s disease and children with sensory sensitivities. Now, Fynbo is seeking funds to finish her current production run. She’s also learning how to list the Busy Baby Mat on Amazon and is locating a manufacturer for initial packaging of the Busy Baby Mat.
