As the kids gear up for another exciting school year, it's the perfect time to hit reset on our home organization. This episode dives deep into the art of transforming our spaces into functional havens that can withstand the chaos of family life. We're revisiting some stellar tips and tricks we picked up over the summer for decluttering and organizing, with insights from expert Shelby Cornette, the original Neat Freak herself! We chat about everything from tackling the dreaded playroom to creating a zen-like kitchen space, all while keeping things light and fun. So grab your favorite cozy drink, kick back, and let's get our homes ready for fall—because nothing says "back to school" like a well-organized space! As summer days fade and the school year kicks off, there's no better time to tackle the clutter that's been slowly creeping in. In this laid-back yet insightful chat, we dive into the art of home organization, especially as kids are returning to school and fall is just around the corner. Think of this as your organizational pep talk from friends who totally get it. We weave through the challenges parents face when trying to maintain order amidst the chaos of backpacks, lunchboxes, and all the other school paraphernalia. Let's be real, when those little darlings bring home every single piece of paper from art class, it can feel like a tsunami of chaos. But fear not! We've got some practical tips and tricks that will not only help you reclaim your space but also keep your sanity intact. It's all about creating a system that works for your family, one that doesn't just look good on Instagram but is functional enough to make your daily life smoother. We even get into the nitty-gritty of how to approach organizing with kids in tow, turning clean-up time into a fun game rather than a chore. So grab that half-empty coffee cup and settle in; it's time to get your home ready for fall!Takeaways:As the kiddos head back to school, it's the perfect time to tackle the clutter monster lurking in our homes and get organized for fall.Decluttering isn't just about throwing stuff away; it's a mental journey that requires readiness and the right mindset to make lasting changes.Professional organizers like Shelby emphasize creating systems that actually fit your unique lifestyle, rather than forcing a one-size-fits-all approach.Kitchens and closets are the top spaces where people feel overwhelmed, making them prime candidates for a little organizational TLC this back-to-school season.Remember, organizing is not just about aesthetics; it's about creating functional spaces that allow you to live your best life without the mess.If you're moving, don't forget that a solid plan and organization can turn a stressful experience into a smooth transition, setting you up for success in your new digs.Links referenced in this episode:aroundthehouseonline.comneatfreakco.comwendyglaisterinteriors.comThanks for listening to Around the house if you want to hear more please subscribe so you get notified of the latest episode as it posts at https://around-the-house-with-e.captivate.fm/listenIf you want to join the Around the House Insider for access to the back catalog, Exclusive Content and a direct email to Eric G and access to the show early https://around-the-house-with-e.captivate.fm/support We love comments and we would love reviews on how this information has helped you on your house! Episode 007 Notes — You Don't Get These Years Back Main Idea Parenting has a clock on it. You do not get the years back to enjoy your children, and you do not get the years back to train them. Be present, make memories, establish boundaries, and do the hard work while you still have the opportunity. Key Points 1. The Clock Is Running Childhood moves faster than parents realize. Many “last times” happen without us knowing they are the last. Do not spend every season wishing for the next one. You can make more money, but you cannot make your child six years old again. 2. Present, But Not Really Present Phones, work, schedules, sports, and constant activity can steal attention. Children know the difference between being heard and being listened to. Families can be busy together without actually being connected. Ask: “Am I building a childhood, or just managing a schedule?” 3. Stop Rushing Through Childhood Every stage has frustrations, but every stage passes. Ordinary moments often become the memories children carry. More activities and more stuff do not necessarily mean a better childhood. Presence often matters more than expensive experiences. 4. Enjoying Them Does Not Mean Indulging Them Loving childhood does not mean removing boundaries. Children can have fun, make memories, and still be expected to obey. “They're little” should not become an excuse for avoiding correction. Small behaviors can become larger problems if consistently tolerated. 5. Parenting Gets Harder When You Keep Postponing It It is harder to establish at fifteen what should have been normal at five. Delayed parenting often means undoing years of reinforced behavior. Your child may be unhappy with boundaries, but unhappiness does not mean the boundary is wrong. If you have waited too long, start now rather than waiting another year. 6. What Do You Want Them to Remember? Home should contain both relationship and responsibility. Children need laughter and limits. They need affection and correction. They need memories and maturity. Do not judge every parenting decision by whether your child appreciates it today. Key Quotes / Sound Bites “You don't get these years back.” “You can lose the years to enjoy them, and you can lose the years to train them.” “Are we building a childhood, or are we just managing a schedule?” “You can make more money. You cannot make your child six years old again.” “Enjoy them while they're little. Train them while they're little too.” “Easy now can become very hard later.” “Hard now. Ready later.” “Parent the season you're in.” “Enjoy the season—and use the season.” “Raise them while you have them.” Practical Challenge for Parents This week: Put the phone down during intentional family time. Create one unscheduled block of time together. Eat at least one meal without screens. Identify one boundary that needs to be reinforced. Follow through on one consequence without negotiating. Do something simple with your child that creates connection. Ask yourself: What am I doing today that I will be glad I did when they are grown? Closing Reminder Your job is not to keep your children little forever. It is to love them deeply, train them faithfully, and prepare them to stand on their own. Raise them ready. Hard now. Ready later.

Work with Paul: Schedule a 30-minute conversation When was the last time you actually read the beneficiary designation on your 401(k) at your previous employer? In May, I sent every family I work with a current readout of their beneficiary designations across every account I track for them. It was the highest-response email I sent all year. For some families, everything was clean. For others, there were gaps we addressed that week. In this episode, I walk through what's actually on those forms, why a beneficiary designation overrides your will, and the technical points that catch busy working families off guard: ERISA spousal consent on 401(k)s, the HSA tax bomb for non-spouse beneficiaries, the SECURE Act 2.0 ten-year rule now in full enforcement, and the difference between per stirpes and per capita. The action this week is simple. Pull up the beneficiary designation on one account, any account, and just read it. If you can't find it, that's the result. Then set a recurring calendar reminder once a year to do the same for every account in the household. Connect with Paul If you're a working parent juggling a senior-level career and a growing family, and you're tired of coordinating four different advisors to manage your finances, I offer complimentary 30-minute conversations.
