Three of the top 40 prospects in professional baseball will be on display from tonight through Sunday at Delta Dental Stadium playing for the Erie Seawolves, the Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers against the Cats. We celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Guinness Book of World Records by mentioning some of the world records that have yet to be attempted. Also today, the story of a sweeping drug bust by the D.E.A. in Franklin and the loss of a long-time educator in New Hampshire, Kathleen Murphy, who led the Concord School District for the past five years.

It was a New Hampshire Department of Safety Tuesday on the program with a focus today on the state's 9-1-1 program with the Director of Emergency Services and Communications Mark Doyle. We were also joined in studio by the 9-1-1 Public Information Officer Patrick Cavanaugh who told us, on average, how many calls the 9-1-1 centers in Concord and Laconia receive each day. Also discussed was a new program from Emergency Services and Communications, “9-1–1 Cares”
We kicked off the week with correspondent John Leahy discussing a successful Red Sox weekend in New York and looking ahead to the NFL season which is just 10 days away. Also mentioned Monday, a Concord Monitor story from Monday which detailed the proposed casino for Concord near the junction of Loudon and Sheep Davis road in close proximity to Route 393. Concord's Planning Board last week granted a year's extension for approval for the first phase of the project from September 1, 2025 to September 1, 2026.

Thursday's show featured NASCAR and baseball. Christopher Bell joined us from a day in Boston which included a Duck Boat tour, a trip to the North End for some Italian Food and a visit with the youngsters at Boston Children's Hospital. We also found time to discuss the NASCAR Cup Series playoff race on September 21 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, a track that's a favorite of Bell's as he won there last year on wet weather tires. New Hampshire Fisher Cats broadcaster Chris Jared joined us from Akron, Ohio where the ‘Cats are playing the Cleveland Guardians Double-A affiliate, the Rubber Ducks, and looking forward to coming home starting next Tuesday for a 6-game series with Erie.
Wednesday's program celebrated National Radio Day! We looked back at some of the history and the early programming of WKXL which is now in its' 80th year of serving the community. Highlighted was a typical Wednesday broadcast schedule in October of 1946 here on WKXL when the station was getting started and that lineup of shows featured a wide variety of local and network programming.
Tuesday's edition included our correspondent John Leahy on the Patriots and Red Sox in addition to the possible re-alignment of Major League Baseball. We also recognized the return of a “Bob” to the big leagues for the first time is 15 years. Finally on the 62nd birthday of John Stamos, his demands for appearing at a September music festival in Chicago to play drums for The Beach Boys.
It was another Medicare Monday on the program with Larissa and Christian Troy of Woodpecker Insurance of Concord. The annual Medicare enrollment period starts on October 15 and Christian and Larissa explained how those with Medicare or Medicare first-time recipients should start planning for the period which ends on December 7. Thursday's show featured a preview of the 11th Annual Blues Festival in Londonderry on August 23 at noon to benefit the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association NH5-1. The association provides assistance and financial help to veterans in need throughout New Hampshire. Chapter , Commander of the association, Matt Verhelle, joined us in studio along with “Dr. G” who will be one of the performers at the festival and the founder of the event “Dr. Harp”, Dennis Martin, who will be leading the featured act of the day, Dr. Harp's Blues Revue Band. The festival will start at noon on 8/23 at the Londonderry Common.

In a potpourri Tuesday version of the program we featured some music from Civil War days to Dire Straits. Also on Tuesday we featured a recent A.A.R.P./Better Business Bureau report on the top five scams to be aware of. Scams are increasing and, given today's technology, becoming more sophisticated. According to the FBI, scams reported by Americans 60 and older were up 11 percent last year over the year before and those over 60 reportedly lost more than $3.4 billion in 2023 to scammers.

Included among them, legal trouble for California Democrat Adam Schiff, the “marriage” between the NFL and Disney and the recent success of the Boston Red Sox and New Hampshire Fisher Cats. We were joined by Fisher Cats broadcaster Chris Jared who discussed the ‘Cats current winning streak despite the loss of several key performers who were traded away by their parent club, the Toronto Blue Jays.
The first Tuesday of the month means a visit from the New Hampshire Insurance Department. The Department's Supervisor for Property and Casualty Compliance, LuAnne King, was with us to discuss the fire coverage that is included in our home owners and apartment dwellers insurance policies. Luanne King recently hosted a webinar with the New Hampshire Fire Marshal's office where it was disclosed that the state averages 1,063 home fires each year. Among the topics of discussion on today's program, what sort of measures should be taken to make sure you are prepared for a worst-case scenario.

Dan Weed of Weed Family Automotive in Concord joined us on Thursday's program to discuss the ramifications of New Hampshire's elimination of the yearly motor vehicle inspection program which will officially end on January 31 of 2026. Dan talked of his plans to implement a non-state sanctioned vehicle check that would be unveiled to his customers prior to the termination of the current program.
It was another "One Hit Wonder Wednesday" on the show. It was an OLLI Thursday on the program as we were joined in studio by Tori Berube, the Program Manager for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNH. The registration period for OLLI's Fall registration for courses begins on August 4. Also with us Thursday were OLLI presenters Paul Brogan of Concord and Patricia Nicolino of Portsmouth. Paul and Patricia outlined the course they will be involved with this Fall and told us about their introductions to the OLLI volunteer based educational program.
Wednesday we paid tribute to the “Godfather of Heavy Metal”, Ozzy Osbourne, who died Tuesday at the age of 76. New Hampshire Fisher Cats broadcaster Chris Jared joined us to preview today's matinee at Delta Dental Stadium and the remainder of the homestand. Plus we learned that old fashioned pay phones are returning to rural areas in Vermont where cell service is limited but this time, the calls are free!
Tuesday we welcomed back our correspondent John Leahy to discuss THE most bizarre finish to a Major League Baseball game in about 54 years. It took place Monday night in Philadelphia. Other topics on Tuesday included higher energy bills for many customers in New Hampshire, the departure of a Kraft from the Patriots' front office and the celebration of National Hammock Day!

That game will be Friday night at 7 against Binghamton at Delta Dental Stadium. Also on Thursday's show, the possibility of the elimination of limited liquids through TSA checkpoints for air travelers.
Wednesday marked our monthly “Small Business Matters” segment in association with the U.S. Small Business Administration, N.H. District Office in Concord. Our guests on the program were Nick Gray, Founder of the Gray Property Group with modernized rentals in the Manchester area and on the seacoast of New Hampshire and Erik Lesniak, Liaison for the City of Manchester's Economic Development Office. Among the topics were the availability of affordable housing in New Hampshire and the revitalization of Manchester over the past several years.
On “National Give Something Away Day” we complied by awarding a pair of passes to the Whale's Tale water park in Lincoln, New Hampshire which we will continue to do all week. It was a potpourri kind of Tuesday as we looked back at Monday's historic Home Run Derby won by Cal Raleigh of the Seattle Mariners. Tonight's 95th Major League Baseball All Star Game in Atlanta was previewed and also mentioned, an award-winning ESPN documentary called “Southpaw” which chronicles the life and career of the most remarkable baseball player ever, Jim Abbott.
Monday's show featured correspondent John Leahy as we discussed the current 10-game winning streak of the Boston Red Sox entering baseball's All Star break. Baseball's trading deadline is set for July 31 and we talked about several scenarios prior to that date that the Sox may consider. Sunday's start of the MLB was also one of our Monday topics with Pinkerton Academy's Liam Doyle being selected fifth by the St. Louis Cardinals, the highest New Hampshire pick since Carlton Fisk in 1967. We covered all the bases on a Thursday edition of the program. New Hampshire Fisher Cats broadcaster Chris Jared joined to talk about the Cats representative in this Saturday's “Futures Game” in Atlanta, pitcher Trey Yesavage, the Toronto Blue Jays first round pick in 2024. Also on the docket, New Hampshire legislation passed earlier this week allowing “social districts” in the state that would allow alcohol to be consumed in designated areas outside of their establishments. That option is subject to approval by cities and towns around the state. The law will go into effect on September 5.
Wednesday's program focused on a couple of articles published today in the Concord Monitor. One article citing $17.5-million dollars in budget cuts for the University System of New Hampshire including UNH, Keene State College and Plymouth State University while the other article focused on the fact that the University of New Hampshire will be taking advantage of a recent settlement allowing colleges and universities the “privilege” of paying their athletes directly. UNH will now be spending in the vicinity of $20.5-million dollars on their athletes during the 2025-26 school year in addition to NIL (Name, Image and Likeness) deals that some athletes already had.

Tuesday's program featured Rob Morrill of Morrill Farm in Penacook. Last Saturday Morrill Farm celebrated its' 100th anniversary with an "Open Farm"which drew over a thousand people, many for the first time. Much Morrill Farm history and memorabilia was on display as well as the many cows that were paid a visit including one calf born that very morning. Also with us Tuesday was our correspondent John Leahy who discussed the recent Red Sox success even after the departure of Raffy Devers and how the young players and the role players have made their impact on the team.

Thursday's show was all about barns and baseball. Rob Morrill of Morrill Farm joined us in studio. The Morrill family will be celebrating their 100th anniversary with an Open Farm event at their facility located at 33 Penacook Street in Concord this Saturday, 7/5 from 10 AM to 2 PM. It's been a Morrill family business now in its' fifth generation. We also talked Fisher Cats baseball with one of the voices of the Fisher Cats, Chris Jared. The ‘Cats will be playing the Red Sox Eastern League affiliate, the Portland Sea Dogs tonight, 7/3, at Delta Dental Stadium with fireworks to follow!
Dan Weed of Weed Family Automotive in Concord was our in studio guest for the Wednesday program. Most of the discussion focused on the recent repeal of the New Hampshire automobile inspection program by state legislators and Governor Ayotte. The new law will go into effect on January 31, 2026 when at that time state motorists will not be required to have their vehicles of any type pass an inspection.
Insurance and Fire fighting were the Tuesday topics on the program. The New Hampshire Insurance Department's Supervisor for Property and Casualty Compliance LuAnne King joined us to discuss the need as well as the options and policies available for Summertime “toys” like All Terrain Vehicles, Four Wheelers, boats and even golf carts. In the second half of the show we were joined by the recently-appointed Director of the New Hampshire Fire Academy, Mark Wholey. Among the topics were the many courses available at the Academy and the advances made in fire fighting training which they've been doing since 1960. Monday's show featured Northeast Delta Dental President and CEO Tom Raffio reviewing Saturday's race at Mount Washington where Colorado's Joseph Gray beat the Cog up to the summit of New England's tallest peak for the second time. Tom also talked about Tuesday's event at Delta Dental Stadium in Manchester honoring the 1975 World Series' 50th Anniversary. Some consider that series, the greatest ever played. It featured the Red Sox and the Cincinnati Reds. We also chatted with correspondent John Leahy about new rules for college hockey in the United States where, for the first time, players from Canada's Major Junior Leagues will be given the opportunity to play for collegiate teams in the U.S.
