Sonny talks about his current lot in life, his approach to not playing in the WBC, his plans for the future, and how he fell in love with trees (and nature). To top things off, Bradfo also catches up with another player who was traded from St. Louis to Boston, Willson Contreras, who offers an honest assessment of how he wants to be viewed by opponents and teammates. Red Sox fans eye a new era as Boston's pitching firepower headlines 2026. With Garrett Crochet, Ranger Suárez, and Sonny Gray anchoring a rotation poised to dominate, are the Red Sox ready for a postseason surge—or will offensive uncertainty hold them back?Gabby (Hurlbut) Maljanian examines critical lineup questions, from Marcelo Mayer and Caleb Durbin's roles in a youthful infield to Trevor Story's comeback potential. From 'Play Tessie' (subscribe here): Gordo, Sammy, and Pat have had a few more days to digest the Red Sox signing of Ranger Suarez. Would the starting rotation look better with a co-ace to Garrett Crochet over a combination of Suarez and Sonny Gray? Then, Pat brings Brett Baty to the table as the bat the Sox trade for, but the fit might not be clean considering it would add another lefty to the lineup. And, Isaac Paredes has been another name floated that could salvage the lineup and even the infield defense. Episode 131 of Tablesetters is a reaction pod focused on a pivotal stretch of the offseason, as a major pitching commitment in Boston, a franchise-defining signing in Chicago, a stalled superstar market, and a rare ballpark adjustment collectively show how teams are adapting to risk, scarcity, and roster timing heading into 2026. We open in Boston, where the Red Sox are set to sign left-handed pitcher Ranger Suárez to a five-year, $130 million contract with no deferrals, no opt-outs, and no no-trade protection. The deal represents the largest free-agent commitment of Craig Breslow's tenure and a clear pivot back toward rotation strength after Boston stalled in its pursuit of an infield upgrade. Suárez joins a rotation led by Garrett Crochet and recently bolstered by Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo, signaling a belief in run prevention, depth, and managed workloads over chasing innings volume. From there, we shift to Chicago, where the Cubs make the biggest offensive splash of their offseason by signing Alex Bregman to a five-year, $175 million deal with significant deferrals. We break down why this move reshapes the Cubs' lineup, how it reflects a philosophical shift from the Ricketts family, and what Bregman's arrival means for the infield picture alongside Dansby Swanson, Nico Hoerner, and Matt Shaw as Chicago pushes firmly into a win-now posture. Next, we zoom out to the top of the free-agent market, where Kyle Tucker remains unsigned. We discuss reports that the Mets have offered a short-term deal with a $50 million average annual value, while the Blue Jays have made a long-term offer, highlighting the growing divide between extreme AAV flexibility and traditional long-term guarantees — and why Tucker's decision could reshape the rest of the offseason. We close in Kansas City, where the Royals announce changes to the outfield dimensions at Kauffman Stadium, moving in the fences in both corners and the alleys while lowering wall height. We explore why this calculated adjustment is aimed at boosting offense without compromising pitching, how it aligns with the Royals' left-handed core, and what it says about teams looking for marginal gains beyond the roster itself. Steve and Devin connect the dots between market behavior, roster construction, financial flexibility, and environment, focusing on how these moves reflect a league increasingly split between certainty, creativity, and controlled risk. ⚾️ One week, four signals, and a clearer picture of how contenders are being built.
From the Cardinals trades to Twitter's finest, it has definitely proved to be as spicy as it has been boring for the Red Sox. Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras are both welcome additions to the Red Sox. They were the right moves. No free agents yet... Come on Craig, don't let us down. Twitter has been the most entertaining part of the offseason! At the hands of prominent Red Sox troll @KutterIsKing, both Cam Schlittler and Jazz Chisholm have been ratio-ed. May they RIP in peace. Happy New Year from your friends at NASP! Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
After adding Sonny Gray, Johan Oviedo, and Willson Contreras, the Red Sox still have holes they need to fill on their roster. Will Alex Bregman return, and if not could the team pivot to Bo Bichette? Will the Sox trade an outfielder? The Celtics have won four straight games, how good can they be this season?
There should be ballads written about Willson Contreras' brief time with the Cardinals. From his arrival as the All-Star eager for the challenge of following Yadier Molina, to that weird week when he took fly balls in left field and stopped catching, to the injuries and fractures and ultimately his move to first base, out from behind home plate without skipping a beat at the plate. Contreras brought both joy and fury to the Cardinals' lineup and clubhouse, and at some point his absence will be felt by the teammates who remain. But he won't be a alone. In a brand new Best Podcast in Baseball, recorded on Christmas Eve, Post-Dispatch editor Nathan Mills and baseball writer Derrick Goold discuss the Cardinals' counterintuitive shopping list for the holidays and what is missing from it and possibly from the clubhouse during his reboot of an organization. The Cardinals traded a starter (Sonny Gray) only to sign a starter (Dustin May) a few weeks later; they traded a right-handed bat from the middle of the order (Contreras) only to suggest a few hours later that they would now look for a right-handed bat to add to the roster. The Cardinals are swapping All-Stars for pitching depth and then looking to replace those veterans with players on shorter-term deals or with more control and less cost. What's missing from those moves is the leadership and experience that the Cardinals have long championed as part of their continuity, as part of their identity as a club. And more trades ahead could mean the departure of Brendan Donovan, who personifies the way the Cardinals like to play and be in the clubhouse; JoJo Romreo, the seasoned reliever in the bullpen; and Nolan Arenado, the future Hall of Famer and Gold Glove-cornerstone at third. Mills and Goold discuss what happens when a young group of players isn't inheriting expectations but tasked with trying to grow them. More Post-Dispatch podcasts. Please consider subscribing. Between trading for Sonny Gray who they could see as the number two starter, floating Marcelo Mayer in a trade for Ketel Marte, and letting Alex Bregman talk with Arizona, there really isn't anything the Red Sox have done during this offseason that makes much sense.

From the start of the offseason and the beginning for a new front officer leader, the Cardinals have signaled their priority this winter is to accumulate talent that will help them contend in the future. They began that process by trading Sonny Gray and $20 million to the Boston Red Sox for a pair of pitching prospects, Richard Fitts and Brandon Clarke, and now the Cardinals' pursuit continues with the arrival of MLB's biggest gathering of the Hot Stove season. The Winter Meetings are coming. To discuss the Cardinals' to-do list for the Winter Meetings, KMOX/104.1 FM's Kevin Wheeler rejoins the Best Podcast in Baseball. He and BPIB host Derrick Goold discuss the Cardinals' search to trade Nolan Arenado and what happens if another winter passes without a deal; which of the players nearing free agency, such as Brendan Donovan and JoJo Romero, will help the Cardinals achieve their goal of accumulating young talent; and what does a contract extension look like for manager Oli Marmol. The significant National Baseball Hall of Fame vote set for Dec. 7 is also discussed. This is the first of two episodes because what started as a short conversation spilled into a heated debate about, oh, just the future economic structure of baseball.
