Historic New England plans to open its long-awaited preservation and collections center a week from Saturday with “Shoe Stories: Part, Present, Future” as its opening exhibit along with a day of free activities for the public.The nonprofit, which operates 38 museums across the region, began housing its collections in 1988 within a former shoe manufacturing building in Haverhill. It went on to buy the building and its twin, spurring plans in 2023 for a history center. Vin Cipolla, president and CEO of Historic New England, appeared recently on WHAV and outlined the plans.“Historic New England owns twin former shoe manufacturing buildings on Essex Street, 151 Essex and 143 Essex. And we have made a major investment. And the entire first floor of one of those historic buildings will be the new Historic New England Haverhill Center,” Cipolla said.The ribbon cutting is Saturday, June 27, at 11 a.m., followed by a block party at noon on Essex Street.Historic New England Curator Michelle Tolini Finamore leada a guided gallery walk of “Shoe Stories: Part, Present, Future,” at noon. A question-and-answer session on the Historic New England Haverhill Immersive Experience follows at 12:30 p.m. The Innovators Series launches at 1:30 p.m. with a conversation on the future of shoe design hosted by Finamore and including shoe designers Thom Solo, Yuly Fuentes-Medel and Kelly Chickering. The winners of the Stuart Weitzman Heart & Sole Teen Shoe Design competition will be announced after the lecture. The day concludes with a hip-hop dance performance at 3 p.m. by the Floor Lords, followed by an interactive hip-hop dance for kids led by the group.Historic New England bought the Lang building in 2006 to store its more than 125,000 New England decorative arts and 1.5 million historic documents. In 2023, the nonprofit bought the adjacent Burgess building which allowed it to imagine the site as a cultural hub. Haverhill architect Charles Willis Damon designed the two eight-story buildings in 1912 for bankers William H. Burgess and Howard W. Lang of Boston. They were the largest concrete shoe factories in the world at that time.Historic New England hired DesignLab Architects of Boston to design the exhibition space located in the Burgess building at 143 Essex St. Three other architecture firms, TenBerke, Brandon Haw Architecture and Howeler + Yoon, have been asked to come up with ideas for a cohesive cultural campus that Historic New England plans to develop in the coming years.The Shoe Stories exhibit includes footwear designed for Boston Ballet Company principal Diana Albrecht, Beyoncé, Julia Childs and Walter Gropius. Designers include Chris Donovan, Gucci, Sarah Guerin, Viktoria Modesta, Thom Sol, Louis Vuitton and Stuart Weitzman. The exhibit is divided into five sections: The New England Shoe Industry, Artful Accessories, All Seasons Sporting and A Family Recipe: Seymour and Stuart Weitzman and Workers Stories.Curating the exhibit with Finamore is Nora Ellen Carleson and Lorna Condon, both on the staff of Historic New England. The center will be open Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, from noon to 5 p.m. and Fridays, from noon to 8 p.m.“Obviously, we are really dialing into the extraordinary shoe manufacturing legacy of Haverhill and the Merrimack Valley region and beyond. And the objects that will be in the exhibition center for the Shoe Stories exhibit are just going to be extraordinary and delightful,” Cipolla said.Founded in 1910 as the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, Historic New England owns 38 historic properties in New England, 11 in Essex County.Support the show

In one of only three contested ward city council tests this year in Haverhill, Oliver Aguilo, a city engineer with Lawrence and 20-year resident of Haverhill, is taking on incumbent Michael S. McGonagle, a Haverhill native, to represent Ward 6 on Haverhill's City Council. McGonagle owns a real estate company.Both candidates appeared on WHAV's morning show and answered a series of questions about issues facing the city. Here are their answers in the order the candidates appear on the ballot.Why are you running for City Council?“Well, this would be my ninth term and I've done a lot of good things, I believe, and I would like to continue working for the people of Haverhill,” McGonagle said.“As a city engineer, I notice a lot of things that are really bad in the city that need to be addressed right away. That's what I am running for,” Aguilo said.Is Haverhill building too much housing?“I believe that if we build more, we get more tax revenue.  You increase the tax base,” McGonagle said.“We need to grow with the city. If we are going to build more houses, we need to make sure we have enough water for everyone,” Aguilo said.What can the City Council do to promote more affordable housing?“We passed a nice project last night (Oct. 28) at the City Council meeting of four units in a place where there was run-down garage over in the Bradford area. That's the type of development we need so people can have homeownership,” McGonagle said.“If we have more houses, then probably prices will go down,” Aguilo said.The death of Francis P. Gigliotti II while in police custody and the death of Officer Katelyn M. Tully have left the public looking for answers, especially in light of changes at the top of the police department. Do you think the public has the right to know more and how quickly and what types of information do you think is properly withheld?“I do believe that the public deserves to know. The families deserve to know. The reputation of the Haverhill Police Department needs to be cleared if there is a cloud hanging over it, and I believe that's what the mayor has done by making these changes at the top,” McGonagle said.“I think the public has the right to know everything that is going on. The only thing that I think the police department has to cover is any information related to the investigation. If it is going to interfere with the investigation, it has to be private. Other than that, it has to be public to every resident,” Aguilo said.Do you think residential property taxes are too low, too high or just right?“About right. And if you want an explanation, I can go there. I just think Haverhill is one of the most affordable towns or cities in the Merrimack Valley. With all we have to offer we're a good place to be,” McGonagle said.“There are lot of families struggling right now. It is a bad situation right now. Economically, a lot of people are struggling and I am one of those persons having trouble with the economy,” Aguilo said.What city departments would be your top candidates for cuts?“The budget is pretty substantial, over $200 million. And you have to look at line item by line item. I couldn't just tell you, ‘Hey, this is something we're going to cut'”, McGonagle said.“Right now I don't really have an answer to that question right now,” Aguilo said.The final day to vote in Haverhill's general election is Tuesday, Nov. 4. The study focuses on "combined sewer overflows", events that are triggered by heavy rains and severe weather that send thousands of gallons of harmful bacteria and sewage into the river. Wow, this game was as miserable as it gets. The Celtics lost 122-84 BUT are still heading back to Boston up 3-1. The way they lost this game left a lot to be desired. The energy wasn't there from the jump. They were outscored 13 in the first, 13 in the second, 6 in the third and 6 in the fourth. It was truly a disgusting game to watch. With that being said, every game counts exactly the same and the Celtics now have 2 days to relax, watch some film and get ready for Game 5. The good news for Celtics fans is that Porzingis was Available in this game under emergency circumstances so I would expect him to play in Game 5. The Celtics have also done an unbelievable job bouncing back after losses and this one will be on our home court in front of the best fans in the world. This game was ugly but it's only one bad loss. The Boston Celtics beat the Mavericks 106-99 and take a 3-0 series lead and are just 1 win away from Banner 18!!!!! JB continued to push his case for Finals MVP with 30pts 8reb and 8ast on an efficient 12-22 from the field. He came up clutch with 24pts in the 2nd half including 9 of the teams 21pts in the 4th quarter! Tatum started the game really hot but definitely came down in the second half but that is when JB turned it up! Porzingis wasn't able to play tonight BUT we got great minutes from Horford and then Tillman was the big off the bench and he provided huge minutes throughout the game. He also hit a corner 3 that made the bench absolutely erupt. This was a true team win and not necessarily just from a scoring perspective. Everybody had clutch moments throughout the game and you just love to see that. Teams that go up 3-0 in series are undefeated so it is looking up!!! 15 wins down, 1 to go!!! The Celtics beat the Mavs 105-98 and take a 2-0 series lead and are just 2 wins away from Banner 18!!!! Jrue Holiday stepped up big time in this game leading the way 26pts and it seemed like all of his pts came from being in the dunkers spot with easy buckets from Tatum or JB drive and dumps! The biggest play of the night came with the Celtics up 103-98 where Derrick White and JB met PJ Washington at the rim and came up with a huge block and then JB gets a huge bucket to ice the game at 105-98! While Tatum's shooting struggled continued in this game, he was 1reb shy of a triple-double leading the team in rebounds and assists and continues to do what the team needs. The Celtics were able to pull off this game in the clutch with some huge efforts across the board and now all eyes are on Porzingis who went down once again. Mid 4th quarter, he went up for a rebound against PJ Washington and came down awkwardly and started limping before being pulled for the remainder of the game so fingers crossed that isn't anything serious. The Celtics play again on Wednesday and look to steal a game on the road to take a 3-0 series lead!!! The NBA Finals is here and so is Kristaps Porzingis!!! The Celtics have not had this big of a boost off the bench in a loooongg time and it led to a 107-89 W in Game 1!!! After his remarks during Media Day, I don't think it was super surprising that KP came off the bench but he looked as fresh as ever and was a major spark off the bench with 20pts 6reb and what should've been 4blks! He only played 21 min in this game but the Celtics felt every bit of it. Outside of him, JB was phenomenal and honestly looked like the best player on the court including Doncic at times. JB was killing it on both ends of the floor and really kept the Celtics firing on all cylinders all night long. What separates the Celtics from the Mavs so far in this series is their ability to switch defensively and actually get contributions from role players. Luka certainly went off and got his but the Mavs ended the game with 9ast which is frankly pathetic lol. The Celtics need to continue to pressure the "Other Guys" and let Luka do his thing similar to what we do against Philly and Embiid. What a huge win!! On to Game 2! THE CELTICS SWEEP THE PACERS AND ARE HEADING TO THE NBA FINALS!!!! Jaylen Brown won the Eastern Conference Finals MVP deservedly so. He was spectacular this series and in this game. He had 10pts in the 4th quarter and a couple of monster defensive plays down the stretch as well as the assist to White for the 3 that put the Celtics up 105-102. The Celtics blow out the Pacers 126-110 taking a commanding 2-0 series lead. Jaylen Brown led the way with 40pts and was damn near unstoppable in this game on both sides of the ball. Jrue Holiday played another outstanding game with both Tatum and White playing well in the second half. They were both pretty horrible in the first but they turned on the jets in the 2nd half lol. While JB should be the story of this game, Tyrese Haliburton leaving the game might take some of the headlines. He left in the third quarter and did not return so that is a major question mark come game 3. Funny enough, the Pacers scored more in the 2nd half than they did in the first half with him out there BUT they had to rely on Siakam going off and I don't know how sustainable that is over the long term if Haliburton can't play or not. WOW the Celtics beat the Pacers 133-128 in OT taking a 1-0 series lead in the Eastern Conference Finals. This game was as nerve wracking and fun as it gets. The Celtics were down 115-110 with just under 2 minutes to play and forced an OT after JB deflected an inbounds off Siakam giving them the ball down 3 with 8 seconds left. He then went on to hit a ridiculously hard corner 3 tying the game forcing an OT silencing all the haters who keep saying the Celtics can't perform in the clutch. JB deserves a ton of credit for 2 massive plays down the stretch but Holiday may have put together his best game of the postseason for the C's. He was doing everything tonight and Tatum wasn't far off either. Tatum certainly missed his fair share of shots down the stretch but he also came up big in OT with 10 of the Celtics 16pts! This game was far from perfect and hopefully the Celtics learn from this and come out with a greater sense of urgency in Game 2. We need to play Celtics basketball and stop trying to match the pace of the Pacers because that is dangerous territory against Indy. Onto Game 2!!! Caroline Pineau is a legend in the Massachusetts cannabis industry. On the afternoon of September 13th, 2018, overpressured natural gas lines in the Merrimack Valley area in Massachusetts caused explosions across the towns of Lawrence, Andover, and North Andover. For two and a half hours, over 80 fires caused homes to be destroyed in the area, with the damage costs totaling over $1 billion. The memory of that day continues to shape the work of the Salvation Army Massachusetts Emergency Disaster Services (EDS), as well as the pastors and spiritual leaders who came with them to Merrimack.   The Salvation Army had a hot meal and an ear to listen to the families who didn't know if they still had a house to go home to.    At the recovery center, families could get gift certificates and vouchers to help them rebuild, but what they really appreciated was the presence of someone to listen, offer encouragement, and be reassured that they were not alone in this tragedy.   To learn more about The Salvation Army's response to disasters, visit disaster.salvationarmyusa.org
