Beginning in July the frequency of bus service between Haverhill, Lawrence, Methuen and Lowell will increase during the week.Merrimack Valley Transit, or MeVA Administrator Noah S. Berger, a recent guest on WHAV's “Win for Breakfast program,” said beginning Monday, July 7, the bus will run every 20 minutes. Currently, service is provided every 30 minutes to Methuen, Lawrence and Lowell from its hub in Washington Square, Haverhill. Berger said he is excited for the service improvement.“Frequency makes all the difference. You don't have to fumble through a schedule to figure out when the next bus is. You just literally go out to where the bus is and know that at the very worst you will have to wait 19 minutes, but most of time it will probably be five or 10 minutes,” Berger said.As reported by WHAV in December 2024, the increased service is made possible through at $1.2 million “connectivity” grant the transit authority received from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. The bus, which originates as Route 1 in Haverhill, makes one more stop at Lowell and River Streets and then four stops in Methuen before arriving at the McGovern Transportation Center in Lawrence 45 minutes later. The bus then becomes Route 24 and proceeds to Lowell which takes about 40 minutes. It then makes the return trip.“What that does is tie the four gateway cities of Haverhill, Methuen, Lawrence and Lowell together with really robust service so we couldn't be more excited,” Berger added.Berger said Route 24 has the second highest ridership of all the routes in the system.Berger also said four new “low floor” 12-passenger vans will go into service this month as part of MeVa's on-demand service. The low floor design allows those who use mobility devices such as wheelchairs and scooters to roll right onto the van rather than having to negotiate steps. The design accommodates strollers as well. Five more vans will be added to the fleet in July allowing the transit authority to remove older vans from service. Then an additional six will arrive next year. Finally, Berger asked for the public's help in finding a new location for MeVa's bus hub. He pointed out Haverhill's hub in Washington Square has never worked well because the site is too small to accommodate buses and passengers comfortably.Berger said he is working with the city to find a location, and that two possibilities are Bailey Boulevard near the Haverhill Police Station and the Granite Street garage the transit authority already owns.“It's got to be a central location. It has got to have enough space for the buses and enough space to have that welcoming environment for passengers.” Berger said.Berger said that while there is no timeframe associated with the hub relocation, he believes with the various redevelopment projects going on in downtown Haverhill, the time is ripe for finding a better, more welcoming location for a new central bus depot.Support the show
If state Rep. Ryan M. Hamilton has his way four local groups will receive $375,000 in earmarked grants in the next state budget.Hamilton, whose district includes parts of Haverhill and Methuen, was a recent guest on WHAV's “Win for Breakfast.” Hamilton told listeners he has been successful in adding money for Creative Haverhill, Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce, Historic New England and Methuen's 300th birthday celebration.“I was able to secure four earmarks—one being for the Cogswell Art Center. It has been a recurring one for me and something I care about very much. Creative Haverhill is doing a great job when it comes to restoring Cogswell and its eventually going to turn it into one of the premier art installations in the Merrimack Valley if not the Commonwealth,” Hamilton said.If the funding holds, Creative Haverhill would get $50,000; Greater Haverhill Chamber, $25,000; and Historic New England $200,000. The Methuen Tricentennial Celebration would receive $50,000.Hamilton said the potential grant for Historic New England is significant as the nonprofit seeks to renovate its 151 Essex St.building into a tourist attraction for the region.“My friends at Historic New England who, as we know, are trying to pursue a project that is going to once again transform the downtown for the better and really connect the entirety of downtown together which I am extremely excited for.”Historic New England was also the recipient of the legislature's generosity during the last two years.Hamilton said the Methuen Birthday Celebration Committee is planning a series of large and small events beginning in December 2025 through June 2026. The celebration marks the anniversary of Methuen's separation from Haverhill and its incorporation on Dec. 8, 1725.The budgeting process now moves to the Senate for debate. Then, the House and Senate must reconcile their spending plans before a final budget proposal is sent to the governor. The new state budget would go into effect July 1.Support the show

This is about abuse, missing, and murdered children. Listen with care.In preparation for Friday's new episode with Melanie Perkins McLaughlin, a replay of Andy Puglisi's case first released in June 2023, in two parts. There are many updates to this story, despite it being a decades-long mystery. Explore the haunting case of Andy Puglisi, a young boy who vanished from a public pool in 1976, spotlighting the societal attitudes towards missing children during that time. There was no system in place, no organizations, resources or support. The discussion delves into a failed police response, and the lack of societal capital of these children. Andy's case shines a light on the systemic failures that persist in handling missing child cases, and worse, the cold realities of child exploitation, insidious clergy sex abuse, and the loss and anger survivors of sexual abuse have been left with. The story of 10-year-old Andy Puglisi's disappearance in the summer of 1976 still echoes through those neighborhoods. We learned in shocking detail what was going on in 1970s Massachusetts from the documentary "Have You Seen Andy," that was researched, written, and produced by Melanie Perkins McLaughlin—Andy's childhood friend and neighbor in the Lawrence projects. We confront the epidemic of missing and murdered children during that time, and confront the real threat of online child exploitation. We travel the Merrimack Valley, remembering Michelle Wilson's 1969 murder in Boxford and the ripple effects of these events. Hear about the grim confessions of Charles E. Pierce and the sinister connections involving Wayne W. Chapman, a known predator whose dark legacy taints this New England community. We continue to advocate for these children and so many like them. In concert with Martin Luther King Jr. Day Monday, the oldest black church in the Merrimack Valley this Saturday offers its third annual celebration of the life and legacy of the slain civil rights leader.Haverhill's Calvary Baptist Church holds “Sounds of a Movement,” featuring music, history, services and the awarding of the Drum Major for Justice award to Dennis D. Everett Jr. Rev. Kenneth Young of Calvary Baptist Church, who recently appeared on WHAV's “Win for Breakfast” program, says Everett is being honored for his work in prison reform, youth empowerment and restorative justice.“The award is someone who is doing either social justice work in the community or racial justice working in the community. Trying to uplift people living in the margins. We know that Dennis has work not only in Haverhill but in the Merrimack Valley for some time and we appreciate the work that he has done, and wanted to highlight the things that he's doing and make sure he knows that someone is appreciative of the work that he's doing.”Young notes the afternoon program involves singers Christina DeVaughn, who has a master's in opera performance from the Boston Conservatory, gospel singer Kylisha Farris and actress Remani Lazana.“One thing you're going to hear about is Mahalia Jackson—someone who not only he collaborated with, but she collaborated with him. When you hear ‘I have a dream,' speech she's the one you hear in the background who yells out to him ‘tell them about the dream,' and then he starts the repetition of ‘I have a dream today.' So, we want to highlight her in the songs they were singing and those who were participating, whether they were younger or were older. That's the theme for this year,” he adds.“Sounds of a Movement” takes place this Saturday, Jan. 18, opening at 2:30 p.m. and program at 3, at Calvary Baptist Church, at 13 Ashland St., Haverhill. An offering will take place with proceeds going to the Church's scholarship fund and outreach program.Support the show

Imagine going from earning $700k, getting all the accolades and being able to afford whatever you want to the brink of bankruptcy. Hiding your Range Rover from the repo man, your own home going into foreclosure and counting every penny. Back in 2008, that was enough for many real estate agents to throw in the towel and leave the industry. For Michelle Fermin failure wasn't an option. It's easy to feel like giving up is the only option when everything starts to crumble, but here's the truth: when things get tough, it's time to pivot. It's time to get creative and adapt. The only way out is through—by doubling down, working harder, and pushing forward with a new strategy. When hard times hit, how do you turn it all around? How do you pivot with purpose and execute at a higher level than you ever thought possible? In this episode, team lead at Century 21 North East - Fermin Group Michelle Fermin joins me to talk about her rise, fall and journey back to top agent. We also talk about the importance of personal touch, going back to basics when needed and why it's more important to collaborate than compete in the world of real estate. Sometimes when we succeed, we become cocky and lose that personal touch. Get back to the basics -building relationships, asking questions and building systems. -Michelle Fermin Things You'll Learn In This Episode Back to basics A strong foundation in real estate is built on solid relationships and asking the right questions. Why is it so important to always go back to the basics that build a foundation? Asking the difficult questions Facing fears and asking tough questions is essential in real estate, especially during challenging times like bankruptcy. How can confronting your biggest fears help you make smarter decisions in tough situations? Top 10 vs number 1 The difference between the top 10 and number 1 in real estate often lies in consistency, innovation, and exceptional client service. What does it take to gain that number 1 spot? Guest Bio Michelle Fermin is a growth and accountability driven leader to a top producing team in the country. The Fermin Group, is currently composed of 37 senior agents and 7 junior agents. Major milestones are taking place for Haverhill Public School students with integration of modular classrooms at John Greenleaf Whittier School and steel reaching its peak at the new Dr. Albert B. Consentino School.During an appearance this week on WHAV's “Win for Breakfast” program, Superintendent Margaret Marotta paid special attention to the $160 million replacement Consentino project and $3 million temporary Whittier additions.“If people take a ride by the Consentino, the steel is up. It's looking like a building. It's pretty exciting, and the modulars are up over at Whittier, so we have a lot going on,” she explained.Marotta says a “beam signing” for the last piece of steel going up at Consentino School is tentatively scheduled for Friday, Nov. 22. Besides Whittier, on Concord Street, and Consentino, on Washington Street, the construction list also includes indoor tennis and pickleball courts at Haverhill High School. Marotta estimates both of those projects will be completed early next year.Championed by the School Committee last year, the modular units then under consideration were to bring six classrooms and two bathrooms to the school. Last December, the Massachusetts School Building Authority voted to invite the school into an eligibility period that involves a feasibility study and later steps to determine whether the school should be renovated or replaced and the amount of state reimbursement. The modular classrooms could then be used at any other school that would benefit from additional space. The superintendent also expressed pleasure with school sports programs as the season winds down.“Our girls soccer team was the Merrimack Valley Champion. We had three athletes from the volleyball team go all conference and three golfers, and our Cross-Country Coach Mike Maguire was named coach of the year for Merrimack Valley, and I don't think that's the first time for Mike either. He's a pretty darn good coach,” she said.Support the show

Communities along the shores of the Merrimack River, and the health of the people who live in them, are the focus of a new study by a research team at Boston University. The study focuses on "combined sewer overflows", events that are triggered by heavy rains and severe weather that send thousands of gallons of harmful bacteria and sewage into the river. Dr. Beth Haley, a BU URBAN Trainee, joins Nichole this week to talk about the impact of these overflows on residents and what can be done to mitigate this problem.

THE CELTICS ARE YOUR NBA FINALS CHAMPIONS!!!! They beat the Mavs by 18 (106-88) to win their 18th Banner on 6/17 which just happens to be the area code for Boston. If you didn't believe the NBA was scripted, maybe you do now (I'm just joking). What makes it even sweeter is the fact that after getting criticized over and over for being overpaid, JB won Finals MVP!! This team has been special all year long. It was clear from Day 1 that they had the talent to win it all but there were still questions. People questioned whether or not the Jays had the mental fortitude to do it. They questioned whether or not Mazzulla could do it. They questioned whether they had been tested enough during the postseason. Well all those questions have been answered!!! The answer is YES!!! God, I cannot wait for the parade later this week!!! If you're looking to buy or sell a home in the near future meet Deb Burke, your trusted realtor at Compass Real Estate, serving MA and NH. Wow, this game was as miserable as it gets. The Celtics lost 122-84 BUT are still heading back to Boston up 3-1. The way they lost this game left a lot to be desired. The energy wasn't there from the jump. They were outscored 13 in the first, 13 in the second, 6 in the third and 6 in the fourth. It was truly a disgusting game to watch. With that being said, every game counts exactly the same and the Celtics now have 2 days to relax, watch some film and get ready for Game 5. The good news for Celtics fans is that Porzingis was Available in this game under emergency circumstances so I would expect him to play in Game 5. The Celtics have also done an unbelievable job bouncing back after losses and this one will be on our home court in front of the best fans in the world. This game was ugly but it's only one bad loss. The Boston Celtics beat the Mavericks 106-99 and take a 3-0 series lead and are just 1 win away from Banner 18!!!!! JB continued to push his case for Finals MVP with 30pts 8reb and 8ast on an efficient 12-22 from the field. He came up clutch with 24pts in the 2nd half including 9 of the teams 21pts in the 4th quarter! Tatum started the game really hot but definitely came down in the second half but that is when JB turned it up! Porzingis wasn't able to play tonight BUT we got great minutes from Horford and then Tillman was the big off the bench and he provided huge minutes throughout the game. He also hit a corner 3 that made the bench absolutely erupt. This was a true team win and not necessarily just from a scoring perspective. Everybody had clutch moments throughout the game and you just love to see that. Teams that go up 3-0 in series are undefeated so it is looking up!!! 15 wins down, 1 to go!!! The Celtics beat the Mavs 105-98 and take a 2-0 series lead and are just 2 wins away from Banner 18!!!! Jrue Holiday stepped up big time in this game leading the way 26pts and it seemed like all of his pts came from being in the dunkers spot with easy buckets from Tatum or JB drive and dumps! The biggest play of the night came with the Celtics up 103-98 where Derrick White and JB met PJ Washington at the rim and came up with a huge block and then JB gets a huge bucket to ice the game at 105-98! While Tatum's shooting struggled continued in this game, he was 1reb shy of a triple-double leading the team in rebounds and assists and continues to do what the team needs. The Celtics were able to pull off this game in the clutch with some huge efforts across the board and now all eyes are on Porzingis who went down once again. Mid 4th quarter, he went up for a rebound against PJ Washington and came down awkwardly and started limping before being pulled for the remainder of the game so fingers crossed that isn't anything serious. The Celtics play again on Wednesday and look to steal a game on the road to take a 3-0 series lead!!! The NBA Finals is here and so is Kristaps Porzingis!!! The Celtics have not had this big of a boost off the bench in a loooongg time and it led to a 107-89 W in Game 1!!! After his remarks during Media Day, I don't think it was super surprising that KP came off the bench but he looked as fresh as ever and was a major spark off the bench with 20pts 6reb and what should've been 4blks! He only played 21 min in this game but the Celtics felt every bit of it. Outside of him, JB was phenomenal and honestly looked like the best player on the court including Doncic at times. JB was killing it on both ends of the floor and really kept the Celtics firing on all cylinders all night long. What separates the Celtics from the Mavs so far in this series is their ability to switch defensively and actually get contributions from role players. Luka certainly went off and got his but the Mavs ended the game with 9ast which is frankly pathetic lol. The Celtics need to continue to pressure the "Other Guys" and let Luka do his thing similar to what we do against Philly and Embiid. What a huge win!! On to Game 2! THE CELTICS SWEEP THE PACERS AND ARE HEADING TO THE NBA FINALS!!!! Jaylen Brown won the Eastern Conference Finals MVP deservedly so. He was spectacular this series and in this game. He had 10pts in the 4th quarter and a couple of monster defensive plays down the stretch as well as the assist to White for the 3 that put the Celtics up 105-102. After missing out on an All-Defensive nod and and All-NBA nod, I'm super happy for him to get some recognition. Past JB, we had phenomenal contributions from a lot of guys. Holiday continued his dominance on both sides of the ball, Tatum was very unselfish and was just 2ast shy of a triple double, Derrick White obviously hit that go ahead 3 I just talked about but he also had 5 steals and 3 blocks which is insane to say. This was another unbelievable comeback victory from the C's. NBA Finals here we come!!! The Celtics blow out the Pacers 126-110 taking a commanding 2-0 series lead. Jaylen Brown led the way with 40pts and was damn near unstoppable in this game on both sides of the ball. Jrue Holiday played another outstanding game with both Tatum and White playing well in the second half. They were both pretty horrible in the first but they turned on the jets in the 2nd half lol. While JB should be the story of this game, Tyrese Haliburton leaving the game might take some of the headlines. He left in the third quarter and did not return so that is a major question mark come game 3. Funny enough, the Pacers scored more in the 2nd half than they did in the first half with him out there BUT they had to rely on Siakam going off and I don't know how sustainable that is over the long term if Haliburton can't play or not. Either way, this was a solid win. Onto Game 3!! If you're looking to buy or sell a home in the near future meet Deb Burke, your trusted realtor at Compass Real Estate, serving MA and NH. WOW the Celtics beat the Pacers 133-128 in OT taking a 1-0 series lead in the Eastern Conference Finals. This game was as nerve wracking and fun as it gets. The Celtics were down 115-110 with just under 2 minutes to play and forced an OT after JB deflected an inbounds off Siakam giving them the ball down 3 with 8 seconds left. He then went on to hit a ridiculously hard corner 3 tying the game forcing an OT silencing all the haters who keep saying the Celtics can't perform in the clutch. JB deserves a ton of credit for 2 massive plays down the stretch but Holiday may have put together his best game of the postseason for the C's. He was doing everything tonight and Tatum wasn't far off either. Tatum certainly missed his fair share of shots down the stretch but he also came up big in OT with 10 of the Celtics 16pts! This game was far from perfect and hopefully the Celtics learn from this and come out with a greater sense of urgency in Game 2. We need to play Celtics basketball and stop trying to match the pace of the Pacers because that is dangerous territory against Indy. Onto Game 2!!! On the afternoon of September 13th, 2018, overpressured natural gas lines in the Merrimack Valley area in Massachusetts caused explosions across the towns of Lawrence, Andover, and North Andover. For two and a half hours, over 80 fires caused homes to be destroyed in the area, with the damage costs totaling over $1 billion. The memory of that day continues to shape the work of the Salvation Army Massachusetts Emergency Disaster Services (EDS), as well as the pastors and spiritual leaders who came with them to Merrimack. The Salvation Army had a hot meal and an ear to listen to the families who didn't know if they still had a house to go home to. At the recovery center, families could get gift certificates and vouchers to help them rebuild, but what they really appreciated was the presence of someone to listen, offer encouragement, and be reassured that they were not alone in this tragedy. A History Chat on Lawrence's (MA) 'Four Theaters in a Row' and The Merrimack Valley's Hollywood Connections-Featuring Local Historians Joe Bella and Thomas Spitalere About the Four Theaters in the RowJust after the turn of the 20th century, new theaters began to spring up, some in converted older buildings, most as new theaters. At first, the silent film program also included vaudeville shows or celebrities like John L. Sullivan or Helen Keller. At first, Toomey & Demara (Thomas F. Toomey and Napoleon Demara) Amusement Co. owned and operated the Empire, Premier, Colonial, and Broadway (built by Louis B. Mayer) theaters. Later, The Empire Amusement Co., headed by Dr. Alexander l. Siskind, purchased the Empire, Palace, Broadway, and Premier and took a lease on the Colonial. Dr. Siskind had started his association with the movie industry when he opened the Marquise Theater, one of Lawrence's earliest cinemas. His next purchase was the Victoria, which sat opposite the "4 theaters in a row." The four theaters were: the Astor, the Strand, the Broadway, and the Modern. This was considered so unusual that it was highlighted in Ripley's believe it or not! Also Discussed in this episodeLouis B. John LaCroix is a Boston hardcore legend. On this episode, we discuss: the formation and legacy of Ten Yard Fight, booking DIY shows in Boston in the mid-90s, coming up in the Merrimack Valley in Massachusetts with bands like Converge, Cave In, & Piebald, starting National Edge Day at their farewell show on 10/17/1999, the legend of kids in the hardcore scene selling "Yankees Suck" T-shirts, touring in Europe, traveling to Japan and Bangkok for martial arts tournaments, forming a band with the original lineup of what became the band Terror, his decision to no longer be "straight edge", and much more. This episode also features cameos from Jake Brennan (Cast Iron Hike, Disgraceland Podcast) and Kurt Ballou (Converge). This conversation took place in June of 2022. Cave In are legendary. I don't use that word lightly but very few bands have been able to sustain their place in the music scene, evolve sonically and continue to put out some of their best material to date. That being said, I had to chat with Adam McGrath to discuss his life in the Merrimack Valley hardcore scene, early tour stories and being stubborn. It's an all encompassing discussion that I love to have and hope you enjoy! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
