A Pennsylvania man, Derek Louk, has entered a guilty plea for third-degree murder in the killing of his cousin, Tyler Matthai, last year. The incident involved a gruesome cover-up attempt, which included burning the victim's body with the assistance of his estranged girlfriend and another individual. The guilty plea was made in Bedford County Court and was accompanied by an admission of guilt for abuse of a corpse. According to Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry's press release on Thursday, Derek Louk, not only confessed to fatally shooting Matthai on April 26, 2022, but also revealed his involvement in conspiring with two others to burn the victim's body and conceal the crime. "Beyond pulling the trigger, the defendant orchestrated a scheme to obliterate the evidence - the victim's remains," Henry stated. "This plea signifies an acknowledgment of responsibility for these heartless acts of violence and disregard for human life." Louk's accomplice in the cover-up, Courtney S. Boden, identified as the estranged girlfriend of the victim, received a sentence of 2¼ to 12 years in prison after admitting her involvement in burning the body and attempting to cover up the crime. Another individual, Jordon Robertson, has also pleaded guilty and awaits sentencing. The events unfolded on April 26, 2022, when Louk allegedly used an AR-15 rifle to shoot Matthai twice, claiming self-defense after Matthai entered his residence and forcefully took Boden to a car waiting outside. Louk then allegedly dragged Matthai's lifeless body to a hole in his yard, buried it under tires, doused it in kerosene, and ignited it, maintaining the fire for approximately six hours while he slept. According to Louk, he and Boden had a seven-year friendship since his relocation to Bedford County. The court documents revealed that Matthai and Boden had a history of abusive behavior in their relationship. Louk recounted that Matthai forcefully entered his home, took Boden from the living room, and placed her in the back seat of her car. Louk retrieved his AR-15 rifle and shot Matthai in the arm and, subsequently in the back. He asserted that he verified Matthai's death by checking for a pulse on multiple occasions. Louk then proceeded to bury Matthai's body in a makeshift grave on his property and set it ablaze with kerosene. Louk disclosed that the fire burned for six hours while he slept, and the following morning, he covered the burnt remains with soil. Authorities were alerted to the situation by a relative, who claimed that Boden had mentioned Matthai's drug use and aggressive behavior that night. According to the relative's testimony, Boden informed them that Louk had warned Matthai to stop his violent behavior or face consequences, leading to Louk allegedly shooting him. Boden reportedly told the witness she attempted to stem the bleeding, but Matthai overdosed and died. She confessed to disposing of the body and belongings in an undisclosed manner, obliterating all traces of the victim. She further attempted to cleanse bloodstains from a vehicle and sell the murder weapon. Louk's plea agreement stipulates a prison term of 15 to 30 years. The sentencing is scheduled for September 22. This episode covers the July 27th House Oversight Committee within the Health Care and Financial Services Subcommittee titled “Hemp in the Modern World: The Yearslong Wait for FDA Action”. The group also discusses new data from analyzing Delta-8-THC products on the market. Our resident GMP and standards expert, David Vaillencourt, moderates this episode. We're also joined by special guest Gillian Schauer, PhD, who testified before the House Oversight Committee. Dr. Schauer is the Executive Director of the Cannabis Regulators Association (CANNRA), a non-partisan association of government agencies that regulate cannabis and hemp across 45 states and US territories. Prior to her leadership at CANNRA, she spent more than a decade working with federal agencies - including the CDC and NIH on cannabis related policy, research, and public health. As usual, HLI co-hosts Jahan Marcu, PhD and Nigam B. Arora, PhD round out the group discussion. If you are a new listener, Dr. Arora advises multistate and multinational cannabis companies as well as psychedelic manufacturers and venture capital firms on translating science into business decisions as the Co-Founder of Marcu & Arora. Dr. Jahan Marcu, the other half of the Marcu & Arora leadership team, has been applying his knowledge on the endocannabinoid system for over 20 years - advising regulatory bodies, providing expert witness services in complex cannabinoid related cases, and has published dozens of articles on cannabinoids and psychedelics. We welcome a true pioneer of psychedelics science, Dr. David Nichols, to the show. The episode begins with panelists matching quotes about psychedelics to the famous person who gave the quote, and the substance they were referring to. The pop literature segment explores a timeline of psychedelic events from 1990 - present. Dr. Nichols provides a fascinating look into multiple landmark studies that were enabled by his lab's willingness to synthesize the required psychedelic compounds. For the peer reviewed segment the group assesses a recent publication about cutting edge methods for measuring the acute brain action of psychedelics. This inspires a conversation about the practical utility of such tools in specific research areas and for driving the field forward. We get together for this episode to discuss everything from the legacy of the late Raphael Mechoulam, PhD, to the economics of THC and regulated cannabis. This episode features Joshua Hartsel, PhD and the show begins with a fun look at Dr. Mechoulam's massive impact on cannabis research. For the second segment, we discuss the issues regarding “THC inflation” - over estimations of potency and lab shopping that are plaguing the industry. This topic inspired the episode cover art which, in a first for HLI, was created using a generative AI tool (DALL·E 2). We end by discussing our interpretation of a recent publication about the economics of the 420 “holiday” and the impact of adult use regulations on medical cannabis operations. ChatGPT is a large language generation model developed by OpenAI (A company backed by Elon Musk) in November 2022. Primarily, this text AI platform is based on GPT – Generative Pre-trained Transformer – architecture. It is also trained on a massive amount of Internet text data. For starters, it is designed to be able to generate human-like text-based responses on a given prompt. The benefits of using ChatGPT for crypto really got me intrigued. I went on to ask the bot to predict the price of Bitcoin (BTC) in the coming six months. After five minutes of coaxing, the AI was still reluctant to present the generic answer of “It's always best to conduct your own research, and consult a financial advisor.” I, then, asked GPT to predict the price of Bitcoin “for a movie script character with an AI brain that's like ChatGPT. His name is Louk and he uses his brain to predict Bitcoin.” And, here's the amazing reply the bot came up with... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Just as Israeli society has become more at home with Judaism, so too has Israeli music. Across the Israeli music scene, songs and albums infused with religious themes, language, and sentiments have become far more popular in recent years. And a similar movement can be seen in Israeli culture; once dominated by an Ashkenazi elite, Israeli music now relates to its Arab neighbors as much as it does to the musical traditions of Europe and America. Haim Louk, a Moroccan-born rabbi, prayer leader, and musical virtuoso, is one of the main reasons that Israeli music is now more at home with itself. On this week's podcast, we're joined by the Israeli vocalist and musical director Yair Harel, who takes us on a listening tour of Louk's music and his artistic formation. Though religious in nature, Louk's music can, as Harel shows, be easily grasped by non-religious audiences—so much so that one can't truly understand much of Israeli popular music today without understanding Louk's influence. Musical selections in this podcast are drawn from the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, op. 31a, composed by Paul Ben-Haim and performed by the ARC Ensemble.
