Speaking on the Canadian (Can lit) literary scene and on April/May's The Festival of Literary Diversity (FOLD) specifically, Canadian author and accessibility advocate Amanda Leduc says: It's impossible to have something that's 100 percent accessible all the time. We're always working towards a more accessible world, working towards making those adjustments, bit by bit by bit. And that's where I think having a sense of humility about this and an openness and willingness to learn and to change and grow, for all of us, is really important. This week on Outlook we're talking with Amanda and learning more about Cerebral Palsy and her own experience with the neurological condition causing everything from muscle weakness to fatigue to pain. Leduc tells us about her time getting her Masters at St. Andrew's University in Scotland and something she calls “a monument to exclusion” when it comes to the inaccessibility of heritage buildings and old cities. From the built environment of capital Edinburgh to the natural environment of Canada's winters, Amanda is speaking to us on the show about her own accessibility needs plus considering other's accessibility considerations after being bullied for a visible limp in childhood to her practice of valuing rest and energy preservation (recharging and rejuvenating) in order to be at her most creatively as a writer. For Amanda Leduc, it's about reimagining what storytelling can mean. Check out more on Amanda's work by visiting her website: https://amandaleduc.com Leduc tells us about her previous role as the Festival's Communications and Development Coordinator, about the origins of FOLD for filling a void in Canada's literary and festival spaces as far as diversity and representation are concerned, and about some of the events being offered (both virtual and in-person) such as the Friday night Literary Cabaret and the Sunday High Tea and her involvement in some panels from April 27th to May 4th. And so as The FOLD celebrates its tenth year here in 2025, we're talking bringing people of all experiences and perspectives into the fold with creativity and innovative opportunities for diversity, just as we do every week on Outlook On Radio Western. For more on FOLD go to: https://thefoldcanada.org

While we see trucks and trains moving freight around the country, goods are also traveling by freighter, and some of those ships are 1,000 feet long. In this episode of the Lake Superior Podcast, Walt Lindala and Frida Waara talk with Sam Hankinson, Development Coordinator at the Port of Monroe about the health of Great Lakes shipping and how we can learn more about what's cruising out on the water.Key Takeaways: Great Lakes vessels can haul as much cargo in one trip as hundreds of rail cars or thousands of trucks, showcasing their efficiency and importance. The seasonality of Great Lakes shipping includes winter layup for maintenance and upkeep, ensuring the reliability of vessels during the active shipping season. Despite the age of some ships, proper maintenance and care can prolong their lifespan, highlighting the durability of vessels in freshwater environments. The tight-knit maritime community of the Great Lakes region comes together in times of need, exemplified by the prompt and collaborative response to maritime incidents. Resources such as the Marine Traffic app provide real-time vessel tracking, allowing enthusiasts and observers to monitor ship movements and identify passing vessels.Notable Quotes: "These vessels are carrying the iron ore that's going into steelmaking… They're doing everything. They're carrying the building blocks of America." "These ships exist to move cargo, people make their livelihoods on the Great Lakes… when stuff goes wrong and people are in danger, our industry stands up, our community stands up." "The winter layup period is a very important time… to prepare vessels for the next season and the seasons beyond." "When you start tracking them, you will get it down to a science of how far away they are, when they're going to show up, and when the next one will be coming by." "There is nothing wrong with traveling to a place like Duluth, Marquette, or Sault Ste. Marie… just sitting down by the water and waiting for the boats to go by and enjoying it at your own speed."Resources:National Parks of Lake Superior FoundationMarine Traffic appDon't miss out on the captivating insights and stories shared in this episode of the Lake Superior podcast. He discusses the early experiences that tested his resolve and faith, the toll it took on his mental health and relationships, and the importance of prioritizing faith and family. Jeremy also highlights the need for support and resources for first responders, including spiritual guidance and discipleship. He emphasizes the role of faith in providing hope and resilience in the face of trauma and the importance of integrating spirituality into wellness conversations. Mission First Alliance is a national nonprofit ministry that aims to unite and equip all who have a heart to reach first responders for Christ. They emphasize the importance of faith and spirituality in wellness programs for first responders and believe that it is an often overlooked component. Mission First Alliance's mission is to build a gospel-focused First Responder Alliance and provide awareness and support to first responders and their families. ABOUT JEREMY WADE Jeremy served for the Seattle Police Department for 13 years, but struggled with his identity in Christ vs his identity in the badge early in his career. After a few years on the department he fully surrendered his life to the Lord, which started an amazing journey that the Lord has been blessing along the way. While not free from challenges like the Seattle riots, and many critical incidents, Jeremy could see God's hand in directing his paths. On the Seattle PD, Jeremy was awarded Officer of the Year, and Medal of Valor. He worked in patrol, in the training unit, as a peer support coordinator, and assisted in developing the department's first wellness unit. He co-founded the SPD Beds for Kids Program with Ryan Gallagher, that continues on today. Jeremy also served as the executive director of the Seattle Police Chaplains Association, and came alongside many other local and national first responder ministries. In 2021, Jeremy, his wife Ketryna, and four kids, felt God calling them to move to Tennessee and step out in faith to do full time ministry, supporting first responders nationwide. This led to serving as the Training & Development Coordinator for the Fellowship of Christian Peace Officers- USA, until God started directing his path, and opening doors to start Mission First Alliance. The Oregonian recently reported that “Oregon students as a whole have failed to regain either math or reading skills” lost during the COVID-19 pandemic, unlike students in 29 other states included in an analysis published in January. The article points out that, despite $1.6 billion in federal pandemic aid being spent in Oregon schools, Oregon students are experiencing three to four times the learning deficit of other states. Each school district spent the money differently, but whether it was to hire teachers, renovate buildings, or create programs, the outcome was the same. Oregon students are struggling, and they need different choices in their education if they are going to catch up. Whether it is a voucher system, a tax credit, or an education savings account, school choice needs to be implemented so that we can expand learning options and meet the needs of our students. Thirty-two states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico have private school choice programs, and ten of those have universal school choice. Oregon education policies are well behind the curve, and so are their students. When it comes to educational success, money is not the problem, and in this case, more money is not the solution. 22-Are you losing your religion? - Jeremy Wade How do you reconcile your faith - whether you consider yourself a Christian or otherwise - and being a first responder? You've seen the darkest side of humanity, and have experienced loss within your own ranks with those who have given up hope. That's the very thing that Jeremy Wade struggled with while he was an officer with the Seattle police department. Today on the podcast Jeremy talks about this struggle and how he was able to overcome this dichotomy. In his years at Seattle PD Jeremy helped launch a wellness program and in his last few years there he was the executive director of the Seattle Police Chaplains Association. Today, Jeremy and his Wife Ketryna have launched a national first responder ministry called Mission First Alliance who's mission is to encouraging ministries and engage the Church to equip our nation's first responders and their families to live in Christ and on Mission. CASA of Kern County--modeled on a program started by Judge David W. Soukup (now retired) in Seattle--was developed locally by Hon. Robert Anspach. Judge Anspach relied on many of the "movers and shakers" in Bakersfield to make CASA happen. CASA of Kern County was incorporated on July 19, 1993. The first advocates graduated in July 1994 and started serving children. Since then, CASA has held multiple training sessions each year, graduating over 1400 volunteers, and serving over 3000 children. But our story is not over--the problems remain as critical as ever. Child abuse and neglect remain a significant problem in Kern County. While abused and neglected children are often the result of substance abuse, poverty, and homelessness, we know that it can occur in every neighborhood, within any income strata. We have more than 70 children on the waiting list, and we need CASAs now more than ever before. Amanda DiGicomo sits down with Heaven Vasquez, the Public Relations & Development Manager and Karlee Cain the Communications and Development Coordinator for CASA of Kern County as they discuss how they were founded as well as the different services they offer. They serve as an unbiased 3rd party for foster youth and have helped serve over 3,500 children since they were founded! Heaven explains how their volunteers go through 42 hours of training and agree to an 18 month commitment since their goal is to provide stable and consistent adults in the lives of foster youth. If you are unable to volunteer you can always donate directly or through one of their events like their upcoming Derby on May 6th.
