WMSE’s Local/Live once again returns to Club Garibaldi’s for another awesome Local/Live segment that YOU can join! On Tuesday, March 6th, we welcome Milwaukee folk group, Dead Horses for a live show and interview on-site and over the airwaves. At fifteen, Dead Horses frontwoman Sarah Vos’ world turned upside down. Raised in a strict, fundamentalist home, Vos lost everything when she and her family were expelled from the rural Wisconsin church where her father had long served as pastor. What happened next is the story of Dead Horses’ stunning new album, ‘My Mother the Moon,’ a record full of trauma and triumph, despair and hope, pain and resilience. Blending elements of traditional roots with contemporary indie folk, the album is both familiar and unexpected, unflinchingly honest in its portrayal of modern American life, yet optimistic in its unshakable faith in brighter days to come. Earthy and organic, Vos’ songs often reveal themselves to be exercises in empathy and outreach; she writes not only to find meaning in the struggles she’s endured, but also to embrace kindred souls on their own personal journeys of self-discovery… ‘My Mother the Moon’ is Dead Horses’ third album, and it follows hot on the heels of their acclaimed 2016 release, ‘Cartoon Moon,’ which Wisconsin Public Radio called “equally beautiful and effortless.” That record prompted the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel to declare Dead Horses a Band To Watch and earned them honors for “Best Album,” “Best Americana/Bluegrass Artist,” and “Best Female Vocalist” at the 2017 WAMI Awards. American Songwriter called Vos “a compelling vocalist…who carries every tune with her husky, deeply emotional tone that feels lived in and real,” while No Depression hailed her songwriting as “beautiful and fresh.” With a fleshed out touring lineup, the group logged countless miles, sharing bills along the way with Trampled by Turtles, Mandolin Orange, and Elephant Revival in addition to making festival appearances from Bristol Rhythm and Roots to WinterWonderGrass. You can join WMSE and Dead Horses at Club Garibaldi’s as we team up for this live radio show. If you can’t make it, listen live over the airwaves (or in the WMSE archives). He’s played in the woman’s bathroom at the Cactus Club and to a crowd of 40,000 at Miller Park. He’s played at the finish line of a marathon in Las Vegas and on a pontoon boat in the River Elbe in downtown Dresden during the fireworks finale of Stadtfest. He’s played at sausage shops and fish boils. He’s played in Poland, German, Kansas, California, and Cudahy. He has played to a crowd of zero in the woods, and he’s had Deathcab for Cutie open up for him. All this might lead you to believe he’s notable on some level, but he’s not. About the band: Sara’s Story: Born into a multicultural and musical family, Sara grew up in Southern Italy where she was exposed early to a variety of musical genres and expressions. She began writing her own music from an early age, even before she began her training in classical guitar. While obtaining her degree at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory of Rome, Italy, she continued cultivating her love for songwriting and all types of musical genres by playing and singing in a variety of groups and ensembles. She moved to the USA in 2010. Since then she has been continuing to grow musically by teaching and performing both as a solo artist and with other musicians, until she met Kenny. Kenny’s Story: A native of Brookfield, Wisconsin, Kenny began his study of classical piano at age five and guitar at age twelve. He began his early jazz studies with local guitar veteran Roger Brotherhood. Shortly thereafter, he joined the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra Jazz Studies and also attended the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. During his high school years Kenny won various outstanding soloist awards, including “Best Class A Soloist” at the prestigious Eau Claire Jazz Festival. Kenny attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. He then returned to Milwaukee and finished his degree in Economics at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee while performing actively around the city. Then in January 2015, completely by chance, Kenny met Sara.

Originally called The “Slow Pedestrians”, the band took on its current moniker upon moving to Milwaukee in 1988. Ever-prolific, the band’s prodigious output includes the full-length cassette “Beneath You” (1989), the four-song 7-inch single “Stag Nation” (1990), the legendary holiday tour-de-force “Bells to the Wall” (1991), and several songs they have written since, quickly became hits absolutely nowhere. Following a lengthy hiatus, B~Free reemerges with her sophomore project, the “Ode 2 A Luv Affair” LP. With sound inspirations from Musiq Soulchild, Dwele, J-Dilla and Jill Scott., it is a conceptual album that traverses the ups and downs of romantic relationships. vulnerability, passion and compromise. Production for the album began in 2013 but was interrupted by a lengthy vocal trauma that would leave the artist unable to speak or sing for months. Following a vocal cord surgery & traumatic year of recovery, B~Free became more dedicated than ever to share her musical gifts. Hailed by The Shepherd Express as an “immaculately constructed R&B record,” with a style rooted in 90s R&B/neo Soul and traces of present day influences, “Ode” not only represents the many trials and turmoils of love, but the personification of an artist’s loss and reclaiming of her gift. WMSE is happy to present Local/Live with Shonn Hinton & Shotgun, broadcasting live from Club Garibaldi – 2501 S. Superior Street — on Tuesday, July 19th. Join WMSE and Milwaukee’s Shonn Hinton & Shotgun by listening over the airwaves or by participating as an audience member in another installment of WMSE’s dynamic ‘Local/Live at Club Garibaldi’s’ series! It is FREE and open to the 21+ public. “Why search the world for great musicians when they’re right in your own backyard? Those were Shonn Hinton’s thoughts when forming the super powerhouse group, Shotgun, in 2014. Although the group had played together for over a decade in Milwaukee, they decided to emerge into their own band that would headline tours, showcasing their pocketed, classic sound. Shotgun’s opportunity to shine came when they performed songs live from Shonn Hinton’s 2014 instrumental gospel, rock and blues album The Happy Hour LP. “For Shonn, Shotgun’s personnel guarantees not only great musicianship, but diversity as well. “I wanted the hard-hitting drumming that’s rooted in rock, bass playing that provokes the feeling of Detroit soul, sweet twang, with dirty guitar playing, and singing that put’s you in the mind frame of a Baptist preacher”. This special night of local music and a live radio segment at Club Garibaldi’s (2501 S. Superior) is free and open to the 21+ public to listen to and participate in. WMSE Music Director Erin Wolf and co-host Cal Roach, will lead Shonn Hinton & Shotgun through questions in between their live sets. As an audience member, you can get in on the interview, too. Our audience is allowed to pick our guests’ brains by writing out their questions for Cal and Erin to ask, live on the radio.

Milwaukee-based quartet Space Raft — a staple in the city’s indie scene alongside garage poptimists Jaill — serves up lightweight guitar rock in the melodic vein of early 2000s post-punk revivalists like the Strokes’ Albert Hammond Jr. Dusted with weird little synthesizer distortions Kenny Rogers might be proud of, “Mountain” (the second listen off of the group’s sophomore LP, Rubicon) roughs up the edges of their power-pop with just enough psychedelic edge. Singer Jordan Davis’ double-tracked croons and his guitar’s pleasantly layered crunch, plus jovial arpeggios from T Jay Christenson’s keyboards, beam rays of warmth into the ears of listeners in frigid flyover county.” ~SPIN Help Space Raft celebrate the release of its new Dusty Medical Records LP, Rubicon, by joining us on Tuesday, April 19th at 6pm for another installment of WMSE’s dynamic ‘Local/Live at Club Garibaldi’s’ series, featuring Milwaukee’s Space Raft. To help find the best, weirdest, and most interesting events taking place in Milwaukee this spring, host Tyler Maas enlisted the expertise of two of the city's premiere entertainment writers. Milwaukee Magazine and Shepherd Express music writer Kevin Mueller and WMSE radio personality (and occasional Milwaukee Record contributor) Cal Roach joined Maas to discuss the shows they're most excited to see. From Janet Jackson's Bradley Center gig to Bubba Sparxxx's upcoming show at Cudahy's City Lounge, the trio covers a wide range of spring shows...most of which are somehow connected to Andy Kindler.

It’s beginning to look a lot like…Waldochness. What is “Waldochness”, you might ask? Waldochness is what one gets when Milwaukee musician Mark Waldoch (of Milwaukee band The Celebrated Workingman) puts on one of his famously-infamous holiday music shindigs. For those of you who remember his glorious “Merry Cactmus” show a few years back, buckle in and get ready for another round of holiday cheer.
