Baxie talks to drummer Greg Langston. This is an unbelievable story about Greg's time with the Sea Hags. This was a band that had been set to become “The Next Guns n Roses”. But due to a series of unfortunate circumstances and bad decisions the band began to implode just before they had a chance to record their one and only studio album. This was a band that had everything going their way until it suddenly didn't. In fact, Greg talks about the Sea Hags even having their early demos produced by Kirk Hammet from Metallica and the great Siliva Masse (Johnny Cash, Tool, RHCP). Greg talks about that, his previous work with both No Alternative and Tuxedo Moon, getting fired from the band, and about the release of a previously unavailable live recording of the Sea Hags which has just been released on Liberation Hall records (“Dead & Gone”). Just an amazing and heartbreaking story of a band that missed it by THAT much! Listen wherever you find podcasts and on the Rock102 app! Brought to you by Metro Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Chicopee.

Episode 174 Chapter 33, Digital Synthesizers and Samplers. Works Recommended from my book, Electronic and Experimental Music Welcome to the Archive of Electronic Music. This is Thom Holmes. This podcast is produced as a companion to my book, Electronic and Experimental Music, published by Routledge. Each of these episodes corresponds to a chapter in the text and an associated list of recommended works, also called Listen in the text. They provide listening examples of vintage electronic works featured in the text. The works themselves can be enjoyed without the book and I hope that they stand as a chronological survey of important works in the history of electronic music. Be sure to tune-in to other episodes of the podcast where we explore a wide range of electronic music in many styles and genres, all drawn from my archive of vintage recordings. Talk Talk is an interesting band. Their musical style evolved significantly over time, moving from synth-pop to a more experimental art rock and post-rock sound, particularly with the albums 'Spirit of Eden' and 'Laughing Stock'. I like every phase of their career but I especially love the album 'Spirit of Eden'. Those last two albums have grown in stature and influence over the decades, inspiring countless musicians with their innovative use of space, silence, and unconventional song structures. It's no wonder that an ambient focused person like me would glom onto Talk Talk when you consider band leader, Mark Hollis's often-quoted sentiment about the importance of silence in music – "Before you play two notes, learn how to play one note... and don't play one note unless you've got a reason to". Recently a favorite podcast of mine, Discord & Rhyme, dedicated an episode to 'Spirit of Eden'. It's totally worth a listen. You can find here - https://discordpod.com/listen/155-talk-talk-spirit-of-eden-1988 After listening to that episode I decided to make a mix of tracks with a 'Spirit of Eden' feel. I used a few tracks recommended by the guys in the podcast - Bark Psychosis, Van Morrison, and Mile Davis. And combined those with 7 other cuts that fit the vibe. I always knew that Rain Tree Crow/Sylvian/Jansen/Barbieri would be a perfect fit. I was excited to use one of my favorite albums of 2022 - 'The Great Awakening' by Shearwater. I had forgotten how much I love that record. Are there any Talk Talk fans out there? What do you think of this collection of Talk Talk inspired tunes? Cheers! On this episode, Marc talks with Will York, author of “Who Cares Anyway: Post-Punk San Francisco and the End of the Analog Age,” published in April 2023. It's a thorough and fascinating history of underground music in San Francisco, from the punk scene at Mahubey Gardens, to the post-punk craziness of Flipper, to the art rock of Tuxedomoon and the Residents, to the weirdness of Thinking Fellers, Caroliner, and Amarillo Records, to the massive success of Faith No More. Will captures San Francisco at a time when truly creative freaks were drawn there, could survive there, and changed the course of underground music. As Will writes, “With the benefit of hindsight, it's possible to detect premonitions of things to come…as if they could sense that this was somehow a last gasp for a certain age of humanity. Yet instead of fear and loathing, the overriding mood was one of desperation and urgency. To paraphrase Flipper's Bruce Loose, “It was the dance to the death at the end of the world.”We hope you enjoy Marc's conversation with Will York!

Blaine L. Reininger—American songwriter, musician, multi-instrumentalist, writer and performer, best known as a member of the Californian post-punk, new wave band Tuxedomoon who migrated on mass to Europe in the 1980s—speaks with James Nice, owner of Les Disques du Crépuscule and Factory Benelux, about their formative time together in the emerging Brussels music scene. slight departure from the usual (?) format -- this week's show features a longish conversation with Will York, author of the newly released 'Who Cares Anyway : Post-Punk San Francisco And The End Of The Analog Age' (Headpress). If you've longed for an exhaustive overview of the ups & downs of Flipper, Sleepers, Tuxedomoon, Minimal Man, Toiling Midgets, Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, Caroliner, Zip Code Rapists and many other crucial figures in Bay Area underground music history, today's your lucky day. You're even luckier if you wanted to hear 2 guys talk about it endlessly.
In Who Cares Anyway: Post-Punk San Francisco and the End of the Analog Age (Headpress, 2023), Will York draws on over 100 interviews with musicians, artists, and scene participants as well as zines and other ephemera from the time period to chronicle post-punk San Francisco. York starts with the Punk Era and moves through Post Punk, Hard Core, the Eighties and into the Nineties, to explore the golden age of analog DIY culture, from the dark cabaret of Tuxedomoon and Factrix, the apocalyptic sounds of Minimal Man and Flipper, the conceptual humor of Gregg Turkington's Amarillo Records; through to the subversive pop music of Faith No More, the left-field experimentalism of Caroliner, Mr. Bungle, and Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, and much more. It's a tale full of existential drama, tragic anti-heroes, dark humor, spectacular failures--and even a few improbable successes. In addition, York has a companion podcast to delve further into the scene and the interviews. Rebekah Buchanan is a Professor of English and Director of English Education at Western Illinois University. Her research focuses on feminism, activism, and literacy practices in youth culture, specifically through zines and music. Learn more about your ad choices.
This week on Revenge of the 80s Radio, we play new music from Men Without Hats and Steve Hovington plus classics by Kid Creole & the Coconuts, Mi-Sex,Gary Numan, Tuxedomoon and more.
