Episode 174 Chapter 33, Digital Synthesizers and Samplers. Works Recommended from my book, Electronic and Experimental Music  Welcome to the Archive of Electronic Music. This is Thom Holmes. This podcast is produced as a companion to my book, Electronic and Experimental Music, published by Routledge. Each of these episodes corresponds to a chapter in the text and an associated list of recommended works, also called Listen in the text. They provide listening examples of vintage electronic works featured in the text. The works themselves can be enjoyed without the book and I hope that they stand as a chronological survey of important works in the history of electronic music. Be sure to tune-in to other episodes of the podcast where we explore a wide range of electronic music in many styles and genres, all drawn from my archive of vintage recordings. There is a complete playlist for this episode on the website for the podcast.     Talk Talk is an interesting band. Their musical style evolved significantly over time, moving from synth-pop to a more experimental art rock and post-rock sound, particularly with the albums 'Spirit of Eden' and 'Laughing Stock'. I like every phase of their career but I especially love the album 'Spirit of Eden'. Those last two albums have grown in stature and influence over the decades, inspiring countless musicians with their innovative use of space, silence, and unconventional song structures. It's no wonder that an ambient focused person like me would glom onto Talk Talk when you consider band leader, Mark Hollis's often-quoted sentiment about the importance of silence in music – "Before you play two notes, learn how to play one note... and don't play one note unless you've got a reason to". Recently a favorite podcast of mine, Discord & Rhyme, dedicated an episode to 'Spirit of Eden'. It's totally worth a listen. You can find here - https://discordpod.com/listen/155-talk-talk-spirit-of-eden-1988 After listening to that episode I decided to make a mix of tracks with a 'Spirit of Eden' feel. I used a few tracks recommended by the guys in the podcast - Bark Psychosis, Van Morrison, and Mile Davis. And combined those with 7 other cuts that fit the vibe. I always knew that Rain Tree Crow/Sylvian/Jansen/Barbieri would be a perfect fit. I was excited to use one of my favorite albums of 2022 - 'The Great Awakening' by Shearwater. I had forgotten how much I love that record. Are there any Talk Talk fans out there? What do you think of this collection of Talk Talk inspired tunes? Cheers!   T R A C K L I S T : 00:00   Steve Jansen & Richard Barbieri - Mother London (Stone To Flesh 1995) 05:52   Phil Clemo - Maze (Through the Wave of Blue 2024) 11:07   Bark Psychosis - Street Scene (Hex 1994) 16:20   Van Morrison - When Heart Is Open (Common One 1980) 22:33   Rain Tree Crow - Blackwater (Rain Tree Crow 1991) 26:44   Shearwater - No Reason (The Great Awakening 2022) 32:00   Tuxedomoon & Cult With No Name - Do It For Van Gogh (Blue Velvet Revisited 2016) 36:18   The Blue Nile - From a Late Night Train (Hats 1989) 40:01   Bed - The Whimps (The Newton Plum 2001) 43:10   Miles Davis - He Loved Him Madly (Get Up With It 1974) 62:37   end

On this episode, Marc talks with Will York, author of “Who Cares Anyway: Post-Punk San Francisco and the End of the Analog Age,” published in April 2023. It's a thorough and fascinating history of underground music in San Francisco, from the punk scene at Mahubey Gardens, to the post-punk craziness of Flipper, to the art rock of Tuxedomoon and the Residents, to the weirdness of Thinking Fellers, Caroliner, and Amarillo Records, to the massive success of Faith No More. Will captures San Francisco at a time when truly creative freaks were drawn there, could survive there, and changed the course of underground music. As Will writes, “With the benefit of hindsight, it's possible to detect premonitions of things to come…as if they could sense that this was somehow a last gasp for a certain age of humanity. Yet instead of fear and loathing, the overriding mood was one of desperation and urgency. To paraphrase Flipper's Bruce Loose, “It was the dance to the death at the end of the world.”We hope you enjoy Marc's conversation with Will York!

In Who Cares Anyway: Post-Punk San Francisco and the End of the Analog Age (Headpress, 2023), Will York draws on over 100 interviews with musicians, artists, and scene participants as well as zines and other ephemera from the time period to chronicle post-punk San Francisco. York starts with the Punk Era and moves through Post Punk, Hard Core, the Eighties and into the Nineties, to explore the golden age of analog DIY culture, from the dark cabaret of Tuxedomoon and Factrix, the apocalyptic sounds of Minimal Man and Flipper, the conceptual humor of Gregg Turkington's Amarillo Records; through to the subversive pop music of Faith No More, the left-field experimentalism of Caroliner, Mr. Bungle, and Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, and much more. It's a tale full of existential drama, tragic anti-heroes, dark humor, spectacular failures--and even a few improbable successes. In addition, York has a companion podcast to delve further into the scene and the interviews. Rebekah Buchanan is a Professor of English and Director of English Education at Western Illinois University.

We also discuss songs from Tenor Saw, Five or Six, Tuxedomoon, and Hauster. Not included is Rachelle’s revelation on her theory of Tuxedomoon’s “59 to 1”, here reproduced in précis for posterity: “59 to 1 by Tuxedomoon is about temporality under capitalism. Not Andy Warhol’s 15 minutes of fame; we actually have a fraction of that: 1 second. And how do we express ourselves under capitalism in one second? With the ‘I.’ What is most unique about us, our individuality, is reproduced in a uniform gesture, a tick on the clock. It is also a political gesture, the vote via ‘say I,’ - ‘I.’ And in this way, it is what turns us against one another as enemies or towards one another as allies.” Including music by: Tenor Saw - Original Pumpkin Belly https://youtu.be/jCLQSJE2-x8 Five or Six - Another Reason https://youtu.be/ZV3eaIRewCY Tuxedomoon - 59 to 1 https://youtu.be/ZTWgq9R1JPA Hauster - Ena https://youtu.be/ipYGL3jFXfQ Opening music: Beau Wanzer - Basement Dwellers Produced and Edited by Rachelle Rahme Mixed by Shawn O’Sullivan basecampbeta808@gmail.com

Vocalist Jade Starling and keyboardist Whey Cooler formed the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-based Pretty Poison in 1981. Over the years, the band's recordings featured musicians such as Lou Franco (guitar), Bobby Corea (Cooler's younger brother; drums), and David "Kaya" Pryor (percussion). Their 1981 debut single, "Gimme Gimme Your Autograph," offered spiky new wave, but the group took on a darker, more synthesizer-oriented sound for "No Tears" (a Tuxedomoon cover) and "Expiration," then settled into freestyle-inspired club music. "Nightime," released in 1984, peaked at number 14 on Billboard's dance chart. "Catch Me I'm Falling," Pretty Poison's next single, didn't arrive until 1987, but it topped the dance chart and reached the Top Ten of the Hot 100, helped in part by exposure from its placement on the soundtrack to Hiding Out. Catch Me I'm Falling, the band's first album, was released on Virgin in 1988 and featured a remixed version of "Nighttime." The second Pretty Poison album, the house-oriented Euphoria, was released in 1998. Starling continued to perform and released her first solo album, Captive, in 2014.

Playliste:1. On Tuesday, February 6th, we welcome the zany and crazy-talented Xposed 4Heads for a live show and interview on-site and over the airwaves. In 2012, Xposed 4Heads had the opportunity to “regroup” for the “Lest We Forget” festival and has been going strong ever since. X4 has had numerous acclaimed releases in the synth pop art rock genre. Guest artists have included No Wave legend James Chance, Tuxedomoon co-founder Blaine Reininger, Grammy winner Frank London from the Klezmatics and Deborah Evan from The Flying Lizards (among others). 2017’s ‘Urgency Squad’ stayed on WMSE’s Top Ten play list for 6 months. Xposed 4Heads are a party band that puts on a high energy, witty show that is compared to a mash-up between Devo and the B52’s which features the Star Girls, two aliens that have come for peace and dancing. You can join WMSE and the Xposed 4Heads at Club Garibaldi’s as we team up for this live radio show. If you can’t make it, listen live over the airwaves (or in the WMSE archives). As always, WMSE Music Director Erin Wolf and co-host Cal Roach will lead the Rhythm Chicken through questions in between the live performance with the help of our audience (audience participation is encouraged!). Doors are at 5:30pm and the segment starts at 6pm and runs until 7pm. Club Garibaldi’s is located at 2501 S. Superior Street in Bay View. This is a 21+ event which is FREE and open to the public. Again, if you can’t join us for the live segment and show at Club Garibaldi’s, please tune in, per usual, to 91.7 FM (or stream online at WMSE.org) at the 6 o’clock hour. Shock World Service 040 Now is Come a Darker Day – A Best of Compilation by Jon Averill 18/01/2011 London, United Kingdom 1. Final Fantasy - The CN Tower Belongs To The Dead (Many Lives Version) The Canadian violinist Final Fantasy (now just known as Owen Pallet after some minor legal wrangling with a well known video game's lawyers) has featured numerous times on the World Service. This track is his best known and seemed like a polite way to kick off proceedings. - From Episode #015 2. Tuxedomoon - In a Manner of Speaking One of my favourite tracks ever from San Francisco's Tuxedomoon. Formed in 1977 by multi-instrumentalists Blaine L. Reininger and Steven Brown, then two students of electronic music at San Francisco City College. This track is taken from the album 'Holy Wars'. Anyone else think the vocal that comes in around 2 mins 30 secs in sounds like a bad Bowie impersonator? - From Episode #032 3. John Carpenter - The Windows A transient piece taken from the much lauded and hugely influential 1976 'Assault on Precinct 13' soundtrack. - From Episode #033 4. Miracle Fortress - Beach Baby I'm not a massive fan of Canada's Miracle Fortress but Beach Baby is a track I adore. Cathedralesque reverb underpins this psychedelic pop track. - From Episode #015 5. Mr Hopkinson's Computer - Crazy Mr Hopkinson's Computer sings novelty cover versions with varying degrees of success. Taken from our very first episode back on 2007. - From Episode #001 6. Goblin - Suspiria (Main Title) A proper spine-chilling piece of horror music from genre-masters Goblin. - From Episode #033 7. Luke Vibert - Sharp A2 This is a rare Luke Vibert track taken from the Mo' Wax compilation 'Headz 2'. - From Episode #032 8. Moondog – Couplet The short spoken word piece comes from Moondog, most definitely an act worthy of further research. Living on the streets of New York for over 30 years dressed in clothes based on his interpretation of the Norse god Thor. - From Episode #032 9. Brian Eno - The Big Ship So many Eno tracks have featured on the World Service over the last four years it was very hard to chose one for the best of. I eventually settled for 'The Big Ship'. - From Episode #029 10. Chocolate Witch Band - I'm Not Like Everybody Else San Jose psych-rock in the form of a cover version from The Chocolate Witch Band. - From Episode #009 11. Devo - Gut Feeling Originally appears on their 1978 album 'Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!' which is well worth picking up if you're not already familiar with the strange world of Devo. - From Episode #015 11. Memory Cassette - Asleep At A Party Phil Spectoresque Wall of Sound drums juxtaposed with otherworldly, childlike vocals. - From Episode #019 12. Talk Talk - New Grass One of Talk Talk's gentler moments, 'New Grass' undulates and flows river-like through inventive arrangement & melodies. - From Episode #024 13. Rev AW Nix - Black Diamond Express To Hell The Reverend AW Nix was a 1920s hellfire preacher intent on terrifying sinners onto the path of virtue with gospel influenced sermons that are now considered as musical in their own right. - From Episode #026 14. Of Montreal - The Past Is A Grotesque Animal An uncompromising pièce of power pop from Of Montreal with with literary references such as Georges Bataille's 'The Story Of The Eye'. - From Episode #009 15. Ola & The Janglers This crackly old track from Ola & The Janglers sounds like the epilogue of the universe, dramatic & overstated with every emotion amplified to the point of distortion. - From Episode #015
