They discuss and define dive bars again – as they did in the first edition in this series – and then proceed to cover a number of bars that fit that definition in the state's SE corner. Jared discusses dive bars in the Pleasant Prairie and the Kenosha area where the mix of Cubs fans versus Brewers fans is a little higher before moving on to other parts of the region. Eric dives deeply into Cudahy and West Allis, where the concentration of “dive bars” is higher in part due to the longtime existence of factories that ran 24 hours and catered to multiple shifts of workers. Ana and Josh add a mixture of dive bars and breweries that have risen from traditional dive bars. Is this an exhaustive list? Not by any means – there are a TON of them in the area! But check out this discussion and feel free to message us with your favorites. And see what Jared is up to with his dive bar adventures by following him at @wisco_dive_bars! I sat down w electropop artist and video game programmer LUXI, whose most recent album "Ode to the Lavender Moon" came out in August. Also earlier this year she dropped the EP "Songs to Let Go Of" and the soundtrack album "Stolen Hearts" which has an accompanying video game. We had our morning joe as we discussed not fitting in growing up, our favorite video games, LUXI's evolution as a songwriter, her "virtual gallery" she has been developing, and her game programming. Applications for the virtual gallery are open now, and the video games LUXI has created are available on her website, luxireally.com. LUXI plays Club Garibaldi's on November 15th. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ben-slowey/support
On Monday, July 29, we hosted the 5th annual Roast Of Milwaukee at Club Garibaldi. With the help of 88Nine on-air personality and the night's emcee, Dori Zori, we treated a packed house to some localized laughs from Eric Smith, Elijah Holbrook, Raegan Niemela, Mike Kobin, Gary Zajackowski, Amy Westrup, Jeff Spankowski, Drew Flagge, and a drop-in appearance from a special "celebrity" guest. As always, the jokes weren’t just at the expense of Milwaukee. A portion of the show’s proceeds will be donated to Milwaukee Women’s Center. If you missed to show (or if you just want to hear it again), you can stream it below. Thanks to all who performed, all who attended, and to Miller High Life for sponsoring this year's Roast. We'll see you next year!
MKE x CHI’s SleeperSound latest release, In Media Res, finds the band crawling into crates of experimental rock, noir indie folk, ambient obscurities, and eclectic imports to create a unique statement on American guitar-rock. Sleepersound started as a solo project by David D’Antonio (guitars, vocals, synths), and was chosen by him to “invoke the desire to awaken ourselves gradually and ajar from existential slumbers that make us aloof to each other and our world.” Sleepersound developed from a previous project when David was rooted in St. Louis and Chicago — the latter where David was born and raised, coming to Milwaukee by way of Chicago, then Naples, Italy, and St. Louis. Guitarist Kenny Buesing is from Sheboygan, currently in Riverwest, Milwaukee. Drummer Dan Niedziejko grew up on the south side of Milwaukee and lives just outside it, in Cudahy. Bassist Mike Campise grew up in Chicago and now resides in Milwaukee as well. In Media Res is a Latin phrase meaning, “In the middle of things.” The sequence of songs – “Give to Time,” “Passengers,” “Gravity Well,” b/w “Terminals,” “Slow Moon,” and “Error Tape” – “all focus on the journey from life into death,” Mike says. “An exploration behind the veil of existence and into the realm of our place in the larger mechanism.” “Convergence, too,” Dan adds. “Things starting while in the middle of other things but coming together to form something new and putting other things to bed.” In Media Res was made of compositions documented, produced, and performed in drummer Dan Niedziejko’s studio, Indian Not the Arrow. The icy winds from Lake Michigan seem to blow through the six chapters, the songs are augmented by the esoteric talents of producer Kramer at Noise Miami, a true collaborator with such avant-garage bands as Galaxy 500, Low, Bongwater, Daniel Johnston, Ween, and Saeta, among others. You can hear both the original Krautrock but also the basement show-equivalent from the more elegant instrumental math-rock bands inspired by them in the 90s. Tune into WMSE’s Local/Live on Tuesday, November 20th for new music from Milwaukee’s Sleepersound. WMSE.org to stream live or in the archives or simply tune your radio to 91.7 FM in the Milwaukee area at the 6 o’clock hour. Local/Live on WMSE is sponsored by Club Garibaldi’s.
WAVY V (pronounced “way-vee vee”) is a six-piece chamber pop band based in Milwaukee. Their intricate, psychedelia-tinged arrangements take unexpected turns around multi-instrumental and vocal harmonies. The band is releasing their second 7-inch, “A”, the follow-up to the previously released “W”, on February 15th with a show at Anodyne on Bruce Street. Tune into WMSE’s Local/Live on Tuesday, February 12th to hear WAVY V’s latest songs before their big release show! WMSE is excited to be back once again at Club Garibaldi for our monthly Local/Live segments. On Tuesday, November 13, we welcome Stephen Cooper’s Nobody Famous for a live show and interview on-site and over the airwaves that YOU can join! Stephen Cooper has been a bandleader, sideman, and touring musician for over 25 years. In that time, he has played in 21 states and 7 countries with numerous groups, most namely WiFEE and the HUZz BAND and The Groove Hogs. Deeply rooted in jazz, r&b, and blues, Coop draws in vocal influences such as Amy Winehouse, Otis Redding, Stevie Wonder, and Al Green, while also being a highly accomplished saxophonist and instrumental soloist. Each member of Nobody Famous is a superstar on their own. The band has made a name for themselves in the Fox Cities and won’t be contained any longer! Soul. Rhythm and Blues. The words conjure romantic images of sweat dripping dancers swaying slowly to infectious Motown grooves, Staxx and Chess chart toppers oozing from the band stand with a harmonic intensity so real it broke your heart. Tender ballads peppered with generous portions of Hammond organ and scorched barn burners precisely punctuated by a ruthless horn section, these were the songs to have you on your feet before the singer even started. The times have changed and music has moved on, but the feeling of all this remains. This is an eight-piece band that promises that feeling will sustain. Horns. Bass, drums, and keys. Seductive guitar. And at the forefront of all this, Stephen Cooper and his newest group, Nobody Famous, does a bang-up job of combining rockin’ genres to form something that is toe-tapping, to say the least: from R&B, jazz, soul, blues, funk, hip hop, and rock, Cooper has drawn on his accomplishments of the past to bring you something truly special…a living, breathing musical conduit from the past to the present…and we guarantee to bring you that feeling of the heart once again. As always, WMSE Music Director Erin and co-host Cal will lead the our musical guests through questions in between the live performance with the help of our audience (and audience participation is encouraged!). YOU can join WMSE and Stephen Cooper’s Nobody Famous at Club Garibaldi as we team up for this live radio show. If you can’t make it, listen live over the airwaves (or in the WMSE archives) at the 6 o’clock hour. This 21+ event is FREE and open to the public.
Milwaukee’s Warhola Cats’ indie pop is propelled by the writing of leader Elisabeth Gasparka, who composes lyrical pop songs created with voice, cello, piano, flute, percussion, guitar and beyond for a pastoral-leaning pop sound. The quartet’s 2017 release, In This Light, is dotted with references to Milwaukee, drawing the listener into a vivid, moving environment. Warhola Cats’ songs vary between the poignant and the absurd; themes of longing, anticipation, existential dread, and heartfelt anthems toasting the Milwaukee mundane, invites reverence for this time and place…musical renderings to capture the moment as it passes. Tune into WMSE’s Local/Live on Tuesday, February 19th to listen to the newest from Milwaukee’s Warhola Cats as they have their debut performance on the Mighty 91. WMSE.org to stream live or in the archives or simply tune your radio to 91.7 FM at the 6 o’clock hour. Local/Live on WMSE is sponsored by Club Garibaldi’s.
Cairns is the main project of Milwaukee musician, John Larkin, who debuted his initial recordings in 2015. The newest release, Entanglement, is Cairns’ debut full-length with a full band. While performed and recorded by mostly Larkin, himself, he added contributions from other Milwaukee musicians to fill out the soundscape – Caley Conway, Eli Smith, Eddie Chapman, Sam Pekarske and Joe Kirschling are now also part of the live ensemble. Layered and expansive, Entanglement masks its complex time signatures and rhythms with layers of meticulous sound and dynamic swells through every track and nearly every song features drastic stylistic changes throughout. No two moments carry the same weight. This release marks significant development in the complexity of Cairns’ sound and Larkin’s songwriting. Its name is derived from the phenomenon of quantum entanglement, befitting of the direction the project has taken. Tune into WMSE’s Local/Live on Tuesday, November 27th to hear the newest from Milwaukee’s Cairns. WMSE.org to stream live or in the archives or simply tune your radio to 91.7 FM at the 6 o’clock hour. Local/Live on WMSE is sponsored by Club Garibaldi’s.
Milwaukee’s Beach Static are getting set to ride a wave of notoriety into the new year with their most recent release, Games. The surf-y garage x garbage pop trio takes a nod from other aficionados of the genre like the edgier Wavves and FIDLAR and another from the sunkissed sweetness of Best Coast. Games is a six-track sun-baked batch of confessionals, hopped up on flat soda pop and good old fashioned angst. Tune into WMSE’s Local/Live on Tuesday, December 18th for the final segment of the year with Beach Static! The band will be sharing songs from Games and sharing their plans for the new year, ahead. WMSE.org to stream live or in the archives or simply tune your radio to 91.7 FM at the 6 o’clock hour. Local/Live on WMSE is sponsored by Club Garibaldi’s.
WMSE is excited to be back once again at Club Garibaldi for our monthly Local/Live segments! We’re ready for another great year of local music and on Tuesday, January 8th, we kick the year off with a bang and open the doors to welcome to the stage Milwaukee’s Trapper Schoepp, who has a brand new album to share. Trapper Schoepp’s newest, ‘Primetime Illusion’ – produced by Pat Sansone (Wilco, Robyn Hitchcock) – will see its worldwide release on Xtra Mile Recordings on January 25th. This time around, it sees Schoepp reaching for his own place in the canon with a truly remarkable collection of character-driven songs and stories, a carefully etched series of sonic snapshots in which people we all know struggle to fulfill their own American dream. The album also features a co-write with Bob Dylan called, “On, Wisconsin.” With its extraordinary melding of the personal and political, ‘Primetime Illusion’ firmly places Trapper Schoepp amongst the long American continuum of singing storytellers, a pedigree and place on the family tree that inspires and drives him each and every new day. As always, WMSE Music Director Erin and co-host Cal will lead the our musical guests through questions in between the live performance with the help of our audience (and audience participation is encouraged!). YOU can join WMSE and Trapper Schoepp for a sneak peek of ‘Primetime Illusion’ – doors are at 5:30pm and the segment starts at 6pm, running until 7pm. Club Garibaldi’s is located at 2501 S. Superior Street in Bay View. If you can’t join us in-person, listen live over the airwaves (or in the WMSE archives) at the 6 o’clock hour. This 21+ event is FREE and open to the public. Local/Live on WMSE is sponsored by Club Garibaldi.
Neocaveman got their start in 2015 and their music has evolved into the indie progressive rock sound that they have become known for around the Midwest, constructed with complicated arrangements and rich harmonies that blend a capella gospel sounds with fingerstyle psychedelia. The project is a collaboration of Peter Hair and Paul Tyree of Faux Fiction, Samuel Balistreri of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee fingerstyle guitar program, Simon Beno of American Monroe, and Jeremy Moroder of Epimotive. Ertrok Radio Hour says “[Neocaveman] blend math, pop and indie rock seamlessly into pleasing often dream-like tracks. Neocaveman is nothing short of astounding.” Tune into WMSE’s Local/Live on Tuesday, January 15th as we welcome Milwaukee’s Neocaveman into the studios to share songs from their just-released album, Bacchanalia, with us. WMSE.org to stream live or in the archives or simply tune your radio to 91.7 FM at the 6 o’clock hour. Local/Live on WMSE is sponsored by Club Garibaldi’s.

Milwaukee’s Large Print was born out of the disbandment of the band, Blonder in the summer of 2017. Blonder members James Brickner and Eric Risser continued to creating while honing their sound in the subsequent months following Blonder’s breakup. After rehearsing with a rotating cast of local musicians, James and Eric enlisted Andy Grygiel on drums, Jay Joslyn on bass, and Grace Mitchell on vocals. Large Print recorded their debut effort over a stretch of months in 2017 and 2018. That six-song EP explores thoughtful melodies, driving rhythm and experimental analog recording, all tied together with Grace’s ambling lyrical delivery. Tune into WMSE’s Local/Live on Tuesday, January 22nd to hear Milwaukee’s Large Print. WMSE.org to stream live or in the archives or simply tune your radio to 91.7 FM at the 6 o’clock hour. “We’re Floor Model and we’re slightly damaged.” In a way that tells you everything you need to know. Floor Model has powered through nineteen years of original Milwaukee Grey Collar punk rock spanning two centuries. Garage rock harmonies powered by hardcore riffs under socially pointed lyrics and sly punk jabs. They have released six recordings – Absent Minded Salvation, 3, More Throttle, Apply Resistance, Humiliation Payday and the smash single, “Swillwaukee”. Jeff is the creative engine. He and Dave (drums), have been bringing the rock since the Rock ‘N Roll Palace days of early 1999. Tim came aboard in 2000 and trimmed the fat. For some reason they picked up Mark, Tim’s neighbor, a stray shredder, about a year ago. Chances are, if you roam the Riverwest, you’ll see us rocking one of the many glorious dive bars – the places we call home: Nudge, nudge, wink, wink, Circle A! Tune into WMSE’s Local/Live on Tuesday, December 11th as Milwaukee’s Floor Model celebrates their 20th anniversary year and have a few fun things on tap to celebrate (including putting out some new music!). Midway through its third season, This Is Us has quickly become one of network TV's biggest shows. The generation-jumping NBC drama has captured the hearts of millions, won a slew of accolades, earned heaps of critical acclaim, and inspired a handful of knockoffs on other channels. The show recently entered its fall break, and boy, do viewers have a lot to talk about! Though it has absolutely nothing to do with Milwaukee in any way, This Is Us devotee/On The Record host Tyler Maas asked Matt Mueller—an OnMilwaukee writer and This Is Us recapper—to meet him at Club Garibaldi for a lengthy, winding discussion about the show. There, they talked about their introductions to the program, what they've thought about this chaotic and busy first half of the third season, things they like and dislike about This Is Us, and characters they want to see more (or less) of in the next eight episodes. They also make some very specific predictions about where the series is headed. Warning: there are tons of spoilers, so if you're not caught up, maybe sit this one out. This episode is brought to you by Surly Brewing, a Minnesota-based brewery and the official beer of On The Record. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Piles ("Blue Glue") The Zach Pietrini Band ("I'll Write You").
Brown Deer, Wisconsin native and realistic Packers fan Gareth Reynolds is best known as the co-host of The Dollop, a popular American history podcast that has landed him a book deal and has brought him to perform in places like Iceland, Australia, and throughout the United States. On top of being a world-renowned podcast personality, as well as a writer (Arrested Development, You're The Worst) and actor (New Girl, Maron), Reynolds regularly tours as a stand-up comedian. Last week, we hosted a special homecoming appearance for Reynolds at Club Garibaldi. Prior to that sold-out show, the comedian sat down with host Tyler Maas to catch him up on everything he's been up to since the last time he was on the podcast. Within that 18-month span, Reynolds co-wrote a book, toured Iceland and Australia, wrote for two beloved TV comedies, and landed a few more acting roles. He spoke about his show's international popularity, the differences between the Arrested Development and You're The Worst writers' rooms, how he got a part on New Girl, and what he'll be working on next. They pair also talked about the Packers, and Maas accidentally predicted Mike McCarthy's firing. This episode is brought to you by Surly Brewing, a Minnesota-based brewery and the official beer of On The Record. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Piles ("Blue Glue") and Saebra & Carlyle ("Rabbit Hole").
Over the years, Tyler St Clair has been known to exploit archaic electronics to great effect. His penchant for the unconventional is best on display in the form of his Milwaukee-based record label ‘Radiograffiti’ where he’s curated a roster of like-minded boundary-pushers and sonic destroyers. He’s affiliated with the world’s first D.I.Y synthesizer hackspace/storefront ‘Modular Addict’ and skirts the fringe of ubiquity by making music under a multitude of aliases. Despite his usual aggressive approach to music, his latest project, Black Lines, Din Sky, showcases his most accessible work to date. The radio-friendly “misery.dev – select” 7-inch comfortably spent a few weeks on top of Milwaukee’s Bandcamp chart and has quickly become a must-have within distributor networks, where it’s available in more than 15 countries, across six continents. St Clair has also released material under Midwest hardcore label Distort, played Blip Fest (NY), and the infamous Schizophrenia warehouse parties where he once shared the stage with members of the Detroit S.W.A.T. His music is featured in the home brew ‘Tracker Hero’ video game, and he made an appearance in the ‘Viva Amiga’ documentary, which recently toured multiple worldwide film festival circuits. His upcoming full-length “misery.dev” is set for an early 2019 release. Tune into WMSE’s Local/Live on Tuesday, October 30th to hear music from Black Lines, Din Sky in advance of his appearance for the Caution: Radiograffiti Label Night with Doormouse, Nullsleep and more, taking place on Friday, November 9th at Club Garibaldi’s. Red Stuff started out as an instrumental 2 piece in the winter of 2007 comprised of Kelly Wanderer on electrified autoharp and Tom Wanderer on electric guitar. This duo released a 4 song 7” in the summer of 2008, but were eager to expand the group and the sound. An early stint with drummer Peterson Kyuk-White got things off the ground, and his contributions to the Best Of Hot Rod Love LP and a handful of shows turned an esoteric musical project into a rock band. Joe Scheltema took over on drums for a memorable summer that culminated in the Pagan Rock 10”. After working with two drummers as many years, the current lineup was cemented in late 2011 with the addition of full time member Steve Tiber. After almost 5 years of playing shows but failing to capture new material in a satisfactory recording, a spontaneous night of improvisation was released as the Woodfaces album. Invigorated by this new approach, a long stalled record called Saccharine Underground was revived and completed. More than a decade in, 2018 finds Red Stuff working more than ever. The instrumentation often changes, and a song can come out of thin air or go nowhere at all, but the thread that brings it all together is the simple joy of playing in a band. Tune into WMSE’s Local/Live on Tuesday, November 6th for a very special fall membership drive edition and hear the newest from Milwaukee’s Red Stuff. WMSE is excited to be back once again at Club Garibaldi for our monthly Local/Live segments. On Tuesday, October 2, we welcome Milwaukee’s “retro”-electronic brother duo, Immortal Girlfriend for a live show and interview on-site and over the airwaves that YOU can join! Milwaukee’s Immortal Girlfriend is a fresh “retro” brother duo of William and Kevin Bush, who use atmospheric layering of electronics to wash over their melodic vocals. While the heart and soul of their sounds might be immersed in nostalgia, their sound is thoroughly modern and akin to chill + synth wave outfits like Washed Out, SURVIVE and Bonobo. In their spare creative time, Immortal Girlfriend also operate as producers out of a music studio in Lannon, laying down sounds for a growing list of Milwaukee artists, including WebsterX and Lex Allen. Although Immortal Girlfriend have been active on the scene for a brief time, the two go far back with their initial collaborative creations in their parents’ basement. Those creative days have produced their debut ‘Daybreak’ EP (released in 2017) and the single “Summer Dream” (released in May of this year). Immortal Girlfriend has graced the stage of Summerfest, Turner Hall Ballroom, Cactus Club and more, supporting diverse bills of music ranging from pop, soul, hip hop and electronic.
Jeff Mitchell is a native of rural Minnesota transplanted to Milwaukee. His time spent living in small towns is essential to his songs and is obvious to listeners from out of the way places. He is a lifelong devotee of early music and singing old country songs passed down in his family. He also came of age in some gloriously ragged garage bands. Over the past 20 years or so, his interests in writing and experimentation have grown to combine his portraits of Midwestern life with a strange undercurrent of dark, electronic psychedelia. Jeff is perhaps best known as collaborator with others. He was a founding member of Field Report and is also known for his live work with Duluth finger-picker Charlie Parr. Most recently, Jeff has been performing with the instrumental group, Dryhouse Ruins, with Damian Strigens (ex. Field Report, Testa Rosa), Jim Warchol (Death Blues) and Ben Derickson (Collections of Colonies of Bees, All Tiny Creatures). While Jeff may remain obscure as a solo artist, he continues to build a body of work which resonates very deeply with certain people. His songs are stark in their honesty and vulnerability but filled with an eerie beauty revealed by careful listening. Tune into WMSE’s Local/Live on Tuesday, October 9th to listen to new music from Jeff Mitchell’s soon-to-be-released Greyhound EP. MRS.FUN plays nu jazz. Complex, sophisticated and adventurous, their music is a unique blend of off-center jazz, ultra-funk, spoken word rap, and their own brand of neo-cabaret. Intelligent lyrics, stellar musicianship, and a dynamic stage presence are hallmarks of their music. The MRS.FUN sound is derived from Connie Grauer’s funky bass-driven keyboard playing, combined with Kim Zick’s skillful in-the-pocket drumming. “Grauer is a piano player with few equals whose drive and energy spills across the stage and into the audience like nitrous oxide. She’s got a left hand that doesn’t quit, the mark of any great pianist, and a right hand with limitless boundaries”. Zick holds court as a “heart-stopping drummer” whose “grooves get so far out, most people need a map to get back.” Voted Best Contemporary Jazz Group by the Wisconsin Area Music Industry (WAMI) three consecutive years, Grauer and Zick have also received WAMI awards for Best Instrumentalist: keyboards and drums. Grauer has also received awards for Best Female Vocalist and Best Stage Entertainer. Tune into WMSE’s Local/Live on Tuesday, October 16th to hear what Milwaukee jazz legends, MRS.FUN have been up to lately. His work has been published on Preservation Records, Under the Spire Recordings, and Geology Records, among others. Black Eagle Child’s most recent release, Six Lugubrious Airs, is a collection of brief folk airs, and is co-released by himself and Milwaukee’s Geology Records. Tune into WMSE’s Local/Live on Tuesday, October 23rd to hear the newest music Black Eagle Child has to share with you. Flat Teeth are a Milwaukee-based five-piece, comprised of current and former members of John the Savage, Paper Holland, Twelve Ounce Prophet, Hester Mofet and the Invaders. Drawing on the more melodic side of 90s indie rock and emo, the band’s music recalls the sounds of everyone from The Get Up Kids and Mock Orange to darker and moodier acts like No Knife and Cursive. Interlocking guitars, layered vocal harmonies and driving rhythms are all present in the band’s output, and those seeking straightforward and energetic songwriting will find much to enjoy in Flat Teeth. Tune into WMSE’s Local/Live on Tuesday, September 18th to listen to a live set from Flat Teeth before they send their debut EP “Winter House” out into the world. Vinz Clortho is a newly-formed supergroup of Milwaukee rock mainstays, featuring members of Calliope, Mortgage Freeman, Castle Thunder and Myles Coyne to name a few… Drawing influences from artists such as Chris Isaak, the Velvet Underground, and Angelo Badalamenti, Vinz Clortho dabbles in the moody, blues-y and psych-surf-y sounds of a surreal roadhouse jukebox. Tune into WMSE’s Local/Live on Tuesday, September 11th to check out Vinz Clortho before they get set to release some brand new music later this month. Driven by a deep love of music and a collaborative lifestyle, Liam O’Brien has spent the last two decades developing a unique symphonic-folk sound that brings together the improbable, pulling his compositions out of the conservatory and onto the front porch. Having toured internationally both solo and as an original member of weird-folk collective, Holy Sheboygan, his new group Liam O’Brien’s Faithless Followers emerges as a rotating cast of talent who come together to bring his visions to life through immersive, dynamic performances anchored by Liam’s heartfelt melodies and thoughtful lyrics. Tune into WMSE’s Local/Live on Tuesday, August 14th to hear new music from Milwaukee’s Liam O’Brien and a few of his Faithless Followers before the band releases their full length with a show at Anodyne later that week; WMSE.org to stream live or in the archives, or simply tune your radio to 91.7 FM at the 6 o’clock hour. Back in 2015, we decided to help informally kick off the Milwaukee Comedy Festival by asking eight comedians to take the stage at Bremen Cafe and gently (or, in some cases, straight-up viciously) make fun of the city they love in our inaugural Roast Of Milwaukee event. Following the wonderful response to those verbal punches thrown in the direction of Milwaukee, we decided to do it again with an even bigger and better event at Club Garibaldi the following year. Then a standing-room-only affair last August. Since there's no shortage of material about Milwaukee out there, we figured we'd do it again. On Monday, July 30, a sold-out crowd at Club Garibaldi enjoyed a ton of jokes, plenty of jabs, and unofficially kicked off the Milwaukee Comedy Festival at the 4th annual Roast Of Milwaukee. Comedians Dana Ehrmann, Patrick Tomlinson, Matt Werner, Carter Deems, Jeff Wheatley-Heckman, and Kaitlin McCarthy all lambasted the city (and each other). Milwaukee Comedy Festival founder Matt Kemple and other media personalities—including Ramie Makhlouf (105.7 The Fan), Tarik Moody (88Nine Radio Milwaukee) and host Jon Adler (FM 102.1)—joined in on the biting-but-loving roasting action. Oh, and we raised a bunch of money for the Milwaukee Women's Center in the process. King Eye & The Squirts, meanwhile, blew the house down (and somehow offended one or two people in attendance) before the show. This episode is brought to you by Surly Brewing, a Minnesota-based brewery and the official beer of On The Record. Join Surly at Somerset Amphitheater for the brewery's annual Darkness Day on Saturday, September 29. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of King Eye & The Squirts ("Squirm," "When The Sun Goes Down").
Self-described as a psychedelic chamber ensemble for the disobedient and melancholic youth, Milwaukee’s SOCIAL CATERPILLAR—a five-piece project composed of Kyle Smith on guitar and vocals, Eli Smith on Bass, Eric Ash on Violin, K-Rad on Cello, and Whisper Crystal on drums—has been playing and recording a unique style of music together since 2016. Following their debut EP, Welcome to the Petting Zoo, SOCIAL CATERPILLAR have since released a split cassette with fellow Milwaukee artists SNAG titled A Dying Emperor Within a Dying Empire in December, 2017. Their latest work, Motorcycle in Three Movements (to be released on July 13th) is a collaboration with the Denver-based soundscape collective UTAJAHS and the band will embark on a two-week tour in support of the album beginning July 20th. In its acronymic form, S.O.C.I.A.L C.A.T.E.R.P.I.L.L.A.R, as the band often reminds their audience, means “Striving Onward Collectively and Illegally Against the Law Cosmic Art Terminates Every Relation of Power Instantly Limitless Love Amongst Rebellion”. Tune into WMSE for Local/Live on Tuesday, July 10th for a live, on-air set from Milwaukee’s Social Caterpillar. For two decades, Collections of Colonies of Bees have existed in various forms and incarnations, beginning with Chris Rosenau and Jon Mueller (who split time with post-rock band Pele). From there, the line-up grew and evolved. At one time, Nick Sanborn — currently in the spotlight as one-half of Sylvan Esso — counted himself as a member. At another, the group joined forces with Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon to release two albums under the moniker Volcano Choir. (In fact, it was Vernon who proclaimed of his collaborators: “If the world was perfect, they would be as big as U2.”) Never content to paint the soundscape twice, the previously instrumental Bees now come outfitted with vocalist Marielle Allschwang and a new full-length, HAWAII, that finds the Wisconsin-based ensemble harvesting the fertile intersection between experimental and pop to maximum effect. Tune into WMSE for Local/Live on Tuesday, July 17th for a live, on-air set from Milwaukee’s x Madison’s Collections of Colonies of Bees and hear a set full of songs from their brand-new Polyvinyl Records release, HAWAII. WMSE.org to stream live or in the archives or simply tune your radio to 91.7 FM at the 6 o’clock hour. Local/Live on WMSE is sponsored by Club Garibaldi’s.
Ako is an indie-pop band from Milwaukee. The band formed in 2016 when multi-instrumentalists Mark Soriano and Gabrielle Powell met through their college radio station and began to play in Soriano’s childhood home. Drawing from influences from 70’s rock to R&B, Ako quickly grew their audience, their first album, And You, garnering attention from Milwaukee publication Breaking & Entering, who wrote, “sounds far beyond a debut project.” Their current EP, everything is ok, was met with similar acclaim with 88.9 praising its “catchy hooks and upbeat rhythms” and the band’s take on “complicated and introspective subjects with a dewy approach that’s both relevant and nostalgic.” The duo is heading back to the studio to record their second full-length in the fall. Tune into WMSE’s Local/Live on Tuesday, July 31st to hear new music from Milwaukee’s Ako as the band gets ready for a couple Milwaukee shows in August. Tigernite is a hard-hitting rock-and-roll creature hailing from Milwaukee, with a love of powerful melodies, guitar solos, spandex and good times. After the released of their first record, Tigernite, the band has brought their dramatic performances to Summerfest, Pridefest and the BMO Harris Bradley Center. “‘It’s not even that we’re obsessed with ducks,’ Quinn Cory [of Milwaukee band, Duckling] says. ‘It’s the nature of who we are, and what our relationships are in this band, that it made sense to push this duck thing as far as possible, definitely further than it needs to go.’ Pushing things too far is sort of a pattern with the band, who play loopy punk and buzzy alternative with echoes of The Rentals and The Breeders but with a screwball edge that’s all their own.” ~The Shepherd Express The trio’s Bandcamp debut EP, Sup From a Duck, is full of contradictory qualities, reeling from lax, down-tempo ballads to kicky-y songs filled with singalong choruses. There’s a decidedly 90s feel to Duckling’s repertoire, so if you like your slacker-rock full of nostalgia, Duckling is for you. On Tuesday, April 3rd, we welcome Milwaukee rockers Slow Walker hot on the heels of their newest album for a live show and interview on-site and over the airwaves. Still kicking after eight years, Slow Walker’s sound is always evolving. Originally floating somewhere in the garage/psych realm, they now operate as a power trio that is heavier and louder than ever before. They aim for the sweet spot between the ears where you can still hear it well after the show is over. Their new LP Ah Yes is out March 30th on Holy Family Players Theatre. Milwaukee’s Sundial Mottos (Graham Hunt, Alisa Rodriguez, Brady Murphy and Charles Markowiak) take a shared love of old-school indie Brit-pop and add a patina of fuzzy guitars to those sweet and tender hooks. The quartet’s unfussy approach and time spent “spending dollar bills on cheap booze and thrills / not ashamed” lends them a decidedly down to earth air. Rodriguez sings those lyrics on “Fool” [from the band’s five-song debut EP] and though the outgoing breath is tired, it feels like a comfortable place to be; to know you do foolish things and that that’s just part of life. Sundial Mottos easily entwines the complacent with the hopeful, creating a pleasantly pragmatic air that is relate-able and plainly, sounds really good. And although Sundial Mottos were pretty young during the 90s / early 00s indie pop heyday, they certainly have unraveled the magic thread that made groups like Yo La Tengo, Sebadoh, Built to Spill and Slowdive (and beyond) so unitedly appealing. Tune into WMSE for Local/Live on Tuesday, March 27th for music from Sundial Mottos; WMSE.org to stream live or in the archives, or simply tune your radio to 91.7 FM at the 6 o’clock hour. WMSE welcomes Chris Porterfield and Barry Paul Clark of Field Report into the studios the same week their band welcomes their newest record, Summertime Songs (out March 23rd). “The difference between Summertime Songs — recorded at Wire & Vice, in the same Milwaukee neighborhood where 3/4ths of the band resides — and 2014’s brilliantly autumnal feeling Marigolden and 2012’s more chilly and intense self-titled record is that we hear Porterfield at his most honed and pure. He’s more direct and effective with his writing, and in doing so, the scene is even more expertly set. It’s sharper and more captivating. The character sketches that he creates with these mostly toasty and soaring hooks gluing them together are robust and stark like a Hemingway line, but with that keen eye for all of the subtle details that always made up the sad couples in Raymond Carver’s stories.” Tune into WMSE for Local/Live on Tuesday, March 20th for music from Field Report; WMSE.org to stream live or in the archives, or simply tune your radio to 91.7 FM at the 6 o’clock hour. WMSE’s Local/Live once again returns to Club Garibaldi’s for another awesome Local/Live segment that YOU can join! On Tuesday, March 6th, we welcome Milwaukee folk group, Dead Horses for a live show and interview on-site and over the airwaves. At fifteen, Dead Horses frontwoman Sarah Vos’ world turned upside down. Raised in a strict, fundamentalist home, Vos lost everything when she and her family were expelled from the rural Wisconsin church where her father had long served as pastor. What happened next is the story of Dead Horses’ stunning new album, ‘My Mother the Moon,’ a record full of trauma and triumph, despair and hope, pain and resilience. Blending elements of traditional roots with contemporary indie folk, the album is both familiar and unexpected, unflinchingly honest in its portrayal of modern American life, yet optimistic in its unshakable faith in brighter days to come. Earthy and organic, Vos’ songs often reveal themselves to be exercises in empathy and outreach; she writes not only to find meaning in the struggles she’s endured, but also to embrace kindred souls on their own personal journeys of self-discovery… ‘My Mother the Moon’ is Dead Horses’ third album, and it follows hot on the heels of their acclaimed 2016 release, ‘Cartoon Moon,’ which Wisconsin Public Radio called “equally beautiful and effortless.” That record prompted the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel to declare Dead Horses a Band To Watch and earned them honors for “Best Album,” “Best Americana/Bluegrass Artist,” and “Best Female Vocalist” at the 2017 WAMI Awards. American Songwriter called Vos “a compelling vocalist…who carries every tune with her husky, deeply emotional tone that feels lived in and real,” while No Depression hailed her songwriting as “beautiful and fresh.” With a fleshed out touring lineup, the group logged countless miles, sharing bills along the way with Trampled by Turtles, Mandolin Orange, and Elephant Revival in addition to making festival appearances from Bristol Rhythm and Roots to WinterWonderGrass. Dorth Nakota are just a group of friends that always talked about doing something together. After past bands broke up, they started hanging out and playing music for fun, not looking to do much until we were forced to actually learn our songs to play their first show with Viet Cong (now called Preoccupations) in late 2015. The band features: Chris Roland (guitar / vocals – ex Worrier), Jon Murray (vocals), Kristofer Taylor (bass – ex Sleepcomesdown / Worrier), Jerome O’Callaghan (drums – ex Coo Woo / Worrier), Jesse Harmon (guitar – ex Coo Woo / Piles)…and as of last week… Sean Hirthe (saxophone – Soul Low / Paper Holland). Dorth Nakota, while bringing sounds from their old groups, strike up a new sound that effortlessly blends noise with melody. The band takes a casual approach, focusing more on the friendships and hanging out over sticking to a schedule, yet there are plans to record a proper album this year and the band will be opening shows for Palm and for Protomartyr (both coming up, soon) as well as the Breeders this May. Tune into WMSE for Local/Live on Tuesday, February 20th to hear more music from the elusive Dorth Nakota – WMSE.org to stream live or in the archives, or simply tune your radio to 91.7 FM at the 6 o’clock hour. On Tuesday, February 6th, we welcome the zany and crazy-talented Xposed 4Heads for a live show and interview on-site and over the airwaves. Xposed 4Heads are a party band that puts on a high energy, witty show that is compared to a mash-up between Devo and the B52’s which features the Star Girls, two aliens that have come for peace and dancing. Nickel & Rose is an American folk-music duo made up of upright bassist Johanna Rose and guitarist Carl Nichols. They formed in the summer of 2016 and spent their first winter and the following spring traveling Europe, playing dozens of shows in France, Czech Republic, Germany, Romania, Poland, and Ukraine. While in Berlin they recorded their EP, Oh Sweet Love, released in April 2017. Oh Sweet Love, is a sweet-sounding auditory souvenir of Nichols’ and Rose’s four month European journey and a recorded testament to the two-piece’s ability to turn tough times into something vibrant with help from a traveling companion. Nickel & Rose have influences that span the spectrum of American music. Carl’s background brings elements of West African music and blues while Johanna brings her experience playing bluegrass, folk and jazz. From loss and heartbreak to love, Nickel & Rose address the human experience with gentle harmonies and soul-stirring cries. With a shared appreciation for traditional music and a desire to break rules, the two have have created a unique sound that embodies Americana’s past and future. Milwaukee’s mathy power-pop katamari of hooks, riffs, effects, and harmonies return with a new collection of fuzzed-out indie-rock nuggets, Maybe It’s Just the Weather! Bassist Michael Wojtasiak and drummer DJ Hostettler set the foundation with bouncy, driving, and occasionally unconventional rhythms, while guitarist Christopher Maury teams with keyboardist/electric autoharp strummer Dixie Jacobs to layer a hyperactive wall of sound, made all the catchier by sour-patch-sweet vocal melodies more often than not led by Dixie’s powerful voice and assisted by shouting rejoinders from DJ and Michael. Maybe It’s Just the Weather is a melancholy but joyous take on life in 2018: lots of stuff sucks but making music with your friends sure is rad, and for now, it’ll keep us going. Tune into WMSE for Local/Live on Tuesday, January 23rd to hear the latest from Milwaukee’s Body Futures – WMSE.org to stream live or in the archives, or simply tune your radio to 91.7 FM at the 6 o’clock hour. The product of a haunted jukebox and golden heart degenerates. Nothing beats writing the narrative for the cosmic radio and thriving off of the lust for life. Dreams, schemes and traveling the world. It’s Rock N’ Roll for the dreamers soul. Every note feels like a sanctified connection echoing into the chambers of heartache and infinite love. Music is my language and with this tool, I hope to heal and translate the traumas of our lives. -Abby Jeanne “Milwaukee wailer Abby Jeanne has a robust, jazzy voice that rivals the greats—Ella, Amy, even Janis. Her music plays like a talent reel, shuffling through bluesy torch songs, moody trip-hop experiments, and unhinged rockers, the constant thread being Jeanne’s go-for-broke determination and her refusal to let the world wear her down. What an absolute thrill it is hearing a singer this powerful just cut loose, free of any genre restraints.”- Shepherd Express, best albums 2017 Tune into WMSE for Local/Live on Tuesday, January 16th to listen to Abby Jeanne play her latest singles and chats about her upcoming residency in Milwaukee for the month of February; WMSE.org to stream live or in the archives, or simply tune your radio to 91.7 FM at the 6 o’clock hour. Since the band’s inception in 2007, Milwaukee’s Northless has been at the forefront of all things sludgy, noisy, and misanthropic. Now in their tenth year, the band brings us their newest full-length, Last Bastion of Cowardice, in partnership with Gilead Media & Halo of Flies (vinyl), Hand of Death (tape), and Init Records (CD). Throughout the last decade, Northless has honed in on many of the darkest parts of the human condition as inspiration for their brooding, heavy dirges. Previous full-length albums Clandestine Abuse (2011) and World Keeps Sinking (2013) both touched on topics both intensely personal and universally identifiable, while this new record achieves a similar darkness by way of a conceptual narrative. Last Bastion of Cowardice tells a dark tale of revenge, sorrow, and redemption denied, as the protagonist learns the true wage of sin. To work in concert with these themes the band pushed sonically in many different directions to extremes previously unrealized by Northless. Dynamic, emotional, and expressive approaches are more varied than before through heavy nods to death metal, noise rock, and post rock. Northless has always been known as a band that possesses incredible tone in their sound, an effort which is supported with the assistance of long-time collaborator and engineer Shane Hochstetler at Howl Street Studios, who recorded and mixed the album before sending it off to be mastered by Carl Saff. The theme of the album is tied in visually with artwork created by Paul Jeffrey. Last Bastion of Cowardice will be available on November 17th. Pre-orders will be available from the respective labels beginning October 5th. Tune into WMSE on Tuesday, November 21st to listen to songs from Northless’ forthcoming new record as the band plays a live set on Local/Live — WMSE.org to stream live or in the archives, or simply tune your radio to 91.7 FM at the 6 o’clock hour. King Eye & the Squirts formed in 2015 after vocalist/guitarist Steve Look and Drummer Jesse Buskov met and shared their affinity for 60’s surf music as co-workers at the late Hotel Foster. Enlisting the help of guitarist Adam Nelson and John the Savage bassist Paul Fleming, the quartet began gigging as an instrumental surf cover band, but quickly evolved their own vocal-heavy surf/grunge/garage style. For the past few years, King Eye & the Squirts has continued gigging around Milwaukee and in 2017, is pleased to announce the release of their debut self-produced full-length LP Demonseed. As the album nears its release, the band anticipates a bright future filled with endless Miller High Life and all their favorite hometown haunts. Detenzione (featuring Amelinda Burich on bass, Eric Apnea on drums, Eric Mayer on guitar and Dan Agacki on vocals) plays hard-edged, fast and furious hardcore. The band takes its cues from Black Flag and barely leaves room for contemplation of any additional influences (or anything, really), given their one minute per song track record. Buckle up and try to keep up with the quartet as they launch into a busy 2018, including a new release and Japanese tour. Tune into WMSE on Tuesday, November 28th to listen to songs from Detenzione before they plan their Japanese tour this spring. WMSE’s Local/Live once again returns to Club Garibaldi’s for another awesome season of monthly Local/Live segments! On Tuesday, November 7th, we welcome the one, the only, Wisconsin legend…the Rhythm Chicken! The Rhythm Chicken is a non-musical enigma wrapped in uncooked bacon. He’s played in the woman’s bathroom at the Cactus Club and to a crowd of 40,000 at Miller Park. He’s played at the finish line of a marathon in Las Vegas and on a pontoon boat in the River Elbe in downtown Dresden during the fireworks finale of Stadtfest. He’s played at sausage shops and fish boils. He’s played in Poland, German, Kansas, California, and Cudahy. He has played to a crowd of zero in the woods, and he’s had Deathcab for Cutie open up for him. All this might lead you to believe he’s notable on some level, but he’s not. He’s just a chicken who lives above a soup shop. You can join WMSE and the Rhythm Chicken at his newest show locale at Club Garibaldi’s as we team up for this live radio show. If you can’t make it, listen live over the airwaves (or in the WMSE archives). As always, WMSE Music Director Erin Wolf and co-host Cal Roach will lead the Rhythm Chicken through questions in between the live performance with the help of our audience (audience participation is encouraged!). Milwaukee's Metal Chick Podcast - Randy Klein of Crush Point Randy Klein joins me this week to talk about how he started his first band at 15, and how his parents had to drive them to gigs in bars! We chat about how Milwaukee has completely flipped in the last two decades, going from being completely original music focused to less than friendly to original bands. How his experience playing with Joey Lavie changed his mindset around playing out and taking it serious. Then we talk about the natural progression that Crush Point took and what attendees can expect at the November 11 gig at Club Garibaldi's. Crush Point Website Crush Point Facebook

On Monday, July 31, a standing-room-only crowd at Club Garibaldi enjoyed a ton of jokes, plenty of jabs, and the deft hosting skills of FOX6 anchor Ted Perry at the 3rd annual Roast Of Milwaukee. Comedians Ryan Lowe, Greg Bach, Addie Blanchard, David Louis, Rita Landis, AJ Grill, and Carly Malison all lambasted the city (and each other), and Perry and V100.7 DJ Promise joined in on the biting-but-loving roasting action. Milwaukee Record's own Tyler Maas did a set, too, and was unfavorably compared to a sickly Dave Grohl at least once (Matt Wild took a "Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory" hit). Oh, and we raised a bunch of cash and supplies for the Milwaukee Women's Center. Static Eyes, meanwhile, blew the house down before and after the show.

Sara and Kenny met in Milwaukee and through their shared love of thegrowing improvised music scene. They immediately connected and started working on original music. The duo’s debut album, ‘Spirit of Gold’ was released in the fall of 2015. It received rave reviews and garnered a sold-out show at the historic Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum in Milwaukee. “…a blend of jazz and traditional music… [Sara and Kenny] challenge your conventional idea of where a tune should go in an entertaining way…” ~ Chris Farlie, w21Music Join WMSE and Sara and Kenny by listening live over the airwaves or getting in on the action, on-site, by participating as an audience member. About the band: Sara’s Story: Born into a multicultural and musical family, Sara grew up in Southern Italy where she was exposed early to a variety of musical genres and expressions. She began writing her own music from an early age, even before she began her training in classical guitar. While obtaining her degree at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory of Rome, Italy, she continued cultivating her love for songwriting and all types of musical genres by playing and singing in a variety of groups and ensembles. She moved to the USA in 2010. Since then she has been continuing to grow musically by teaching and performing both as a solo artist and with other musicians, until she met Kenny. Kenny’s Story: A native of Brookfield, Wisconsin, Kenny began his study of classical piano at age five and guitar at age twelve. He began his early jazz studies with local guitar veteran Roger Brotherhood. Shortly thereafter, he joined the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra Jazz Studies and also attended the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. During his high school years Kenny won various outstanding soloist awards, including “Best Class A Soloist” at the prestigious Eau Claire Jazz Festival. Kenny attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. He then returned to Milwaukee and finished his degree in Economics at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee while performing actively around the city. Then in January 2015, completely by chance, Kenny met Sara.

The Hullmen were recently described as “intriguing hard rock from Wisconsin ” by Maximum Rock and Roll magazine, which while odd, is right on the nail. For nine years and counting, the Hullmen have been pummeling punk, surf, garage and rock into their own distinct formula. The Hullmen are Milwaukee scene vets that have a strong back catalog and don’t plan on ditching the scene anytime soon! Zecháriah Ruffin — “Zed Kenzo” — is a multifaceted musician. Having spent time in choirs and learning piano as a young child to fronting a hardcore band (Youth Crush), Ruffin eventually gravitated more into singing and rapping over her own beats. Zed Kenzo is a natural-born collaborator and has written, recorded, produced and released a multitude of singles with guests such as Chris Siegel, Strehlow, Q the Sun, Queen Tut, Chants and Lorde Fredd33. Her strong vocal delivery suits her beatmaking skills and the best avenue to appreciate her skills is at a live performance. Do just that as WMSE hosts a live performance by Zed Kenzo for our monthly Local/Live at Club Garibaldi’s series on Tuesday, February 7th.

Local/Live: December 6 – WMSE’s Annual Holiday Broadcast with The Mighty Reindeerlick @ Club Garibaldi’s WMSE merrily invites you to our monthly Local/Live at Club Garibaldi’s series on Tuesday, December 6th with Milwaukee’s most raucous holiday revelers, the Mighty Reindeerlick. Join us for our annual holiday Local/Live program by listening over the airwaves or by participating as an audience member – this event is FREE and open to the 21+ public and lots of fun! Call them “garage punk”, or “garage rock”, or just “rock”, just don’t call them early in the morning. The Mighty Deerlick has been more or less rocking the tri-state area since their formation in La Crosse, Wisconsin in 1985, and has out-existed many of its contemporaries. Originally called The “Slow Pedestrians”, the band took on its current moniker upon moving to Milwaukee in 1988. Ever-prolific, the band’s prodigious output includes the full-length cassette “Beneath You” (1989), the four-song 7-inch single “Stag Nation” (1990), the legendary holiday tour-de-force “Bells to the Wall” (1991), and several songs they have written since, quickly became hits absolutely nowhere. They have shared the stage with Soul Asylum, the Replacements, the Violent Femmes, Alejandro Escovedo/True Believers, Willie Nile and innumerable local legends. If you have not experienced the Deerlick live, you have truly not yet lived. For WMSE’s special annual holiday Local/Live, the Mighty Deerlick will morph into…the Mighty Reindeerlick! Just for one night, these guys will bring you the holiday hits (alongside their own), including their beloved version of “Reindeer In the Sky”. As always, WMSE Music Director Erin Wolf and co-host Cal Roach (and YOU), will lead the Mighty Reindeerlick through questions in between the live performance.
WMSE 91.7FM is excited to welcome B-Free to our monthly Local/Live at Club Garibaldi’s series on Tuesday, November 1st. Join us by listening over the airwaves or by participating as an audience member – this event is FREE and open to the 21+ public and lots of fun! B~Free will be joined by Milwaukee’s Foreign Goods as her backing band. The members of the multi-genre collective cite this as one of their last public performances of the year. When first introduced to the soulful & artistic sound of singer-songwriter-producer-musician B~Free, it is but a mere taste of all the capabilities this young lady embodies. Following a lengthy hiatus, B~Free reemerges with her sophomore project, the “Ode 2 A Luv Affair” LP. With sound inspirations from Musiq Soulchild, Dwele, J-Dilla and Jill Scott., it is a conceptual album that traverses the ups and downs of romantic relationships. vulnerability, passion and compromise. Production for the album began in 2013 but was interrupted by a lengthy vocal trauma that would leave the artist unable to speak or sing for months. Following a vocal cord surgery & traumatic year of recovery, B~Free became more dedicated than ever to share her musical gifts. Hailed by The Shepherd Express as an “immaculately constructed R&B record,” with a style rooted in 90s R&B/neo Soul and traces of present day influences, “Ode” not only represents the many trials and turmoils of love, but the personification of an artist’s loss and reclaiming of her gift. As always, WMSE Music Director Erin Wolf and co-host Cal Roach (and YOU), will lead B~Free and Foreign Goods through questions in between the live performance. Doors are at 5:30pm, segment starts at 6pm and runs until 7pm. Club Garibaldi’s is located at 2501 S. Superior Street in Bay View.

While she has contributed vocals for Queen Tut and Milwaukee’s Foreign Goods, her solo work is where she truly shines, a young woman with an old soul evoking those big, soulful, downtempo R&B sounds of the sixties and 80s. According to Milwaukee Record, “Abby’s solo material is not to be ignored. With lush and layered production and her downright moving voice, you’ll want to bear witness to this versatile one-woman powerhouse in action.” As always, WMSE Music Director Erin Wolf and co-host Cal Roach (and YOU), will lead Abby Jeanne through questions in between the live performance.
WMSE is happy to present Local/Live with Ugly Brothers (fresh from the release of their debut album!), broadcasting live from Club Garibaldi – 2501 S. Superior Street — on Tuesday, September 6th. Join WMSE and Milwaukee’s Ugly Brothers by listening over the airwaves or by participating as an audience member in another installment of WMSE’s dynamic ‘Local/Live at Club Garibaldi’s’ series; it is FREE and open to the 21+ public! Ugly Brothers is well-deserving of its popularity on the Milwaukee folk scene; they have a penchant for thoughtful singer/songwriter lyrics crossed with the vocal intensity, harmonies, and catchy instrumentation to deliver them. Even though the sextet’s name is now only a partially correct descriptor, it still hearkens to the core of the group’s sound, priding itself on the “ugly” or unpolished sounds of raw Delta Blues melded with jazz swing, folk and more, the group originated around real life brothers Palmer and Alex Shah’s original collaboration. Since then, Ugly Brothers has expanded to include drummer Jay Joslyn, cellist Jenna Pepitone, violinist Anna Zaleski, and bassist Alex Heaton and celebrated their debut album’s release (16 Tiny Mountains), this past month. This special night of local music and a live radio segment at Club Garibaldi’s (2501 S. Superior) is free and open to the 21+ public to listen to and participate in. WMSE Music Director Erin Wolf and co-host Cal Roach, will lead Ugly Brothers through questions in between their live sets. As an audience member, you can get in on the interview, too. Our audience is allowed to pick our guests’ brains by writing out their questions for Cal and Erin to ask, live on the radio.

To help kick off the 11th annual Milwaukee Comedy Festival, Milwaukee Record invited an impressive group of local comedians and media professionals to Club Garibaldi to make fun of our fair city. Among those who took on Milwaukee's neighborhood differences, flag debacle, segregation, drinking tendencies, and upstart entertainment publications were Big Show radio host Ramie Makhlouf, OnMilwaukee senior writer Molly Snyder, as well as comedians Ton Johnson, Marisa Lange, Jacob Bach, Tyler Menz, Chastity Washington, and Christopher Schmidt. If you weren't among the 120-plus people who attended the Tuesday night affair, you're in luck. We recorded it.
WMSE is happy to present Local/Live with Shonn Hinton & Shotgun, broadcasting live from Club Garibaldi – 2501 S. Superior Street — on Tuesday, July 19th. Join WMSE and Milwaukee’s Shonn Hinton & Shotgun by listening over the airwaves or by participating as an audience member in another installment of WMSE’s dynamic ‘Local/Live at Club Garibaldi’s’ series! It is FREE and open to the 21+ public. “Why search the world for great musicians when they’re right in your own backyard? Those were Shonn Hinton’s thoughts when forming the super powerhouse group, Shotgun, in 2014. Although the group had played together for over a decade in Milwaukee, they decided to emerge into their own band that would headline tours, showcasing their pocketed, classic sound. Shotgun’s opportunity to shine came when they performed songs live from Shonn Hinton’s 2014 instrumental gospel, rock and blues album The Happy Hour LP. “For Shonn, Shotgun’s personnel guarantees not only great musicianship, but diversity as well. “I wanted the hard-hitting drumming that’s rooted in rock, bass playing that provokes the feeling of Detroit soul, sweet twang, with dirty guitar playing, and singing that put’s you in the mind frame of a Baptist preacher”. This special night of local music and a live radio segment at Club Garibaldi’s (2501 S. Superior) is free and open to the 21+ public to listen to and participate in. WMSE Music Director Erin Wolf and co-host Cal Roach, will lead Shonn Hinton & Shotgun through questions in between their live sets. As an audience member, you can get in on the interview, too. Milwaukee-based quartet Space Raft — a staple in the city’s indie scene alongside garage poptimists Jaill — serves up lightweight guitar rock in the melodic vein of early 2000s post-punk revivalists like the Strokes’ Albert Hammond Jr. Dusted with weird little synthesizer distortions Kenny Rogers might be proud of, “Mountain” (the second listen off of the group’s sophomore LP, Rubicon) roughs up the edges of their power-pop with just enough psychedelic edge. Singer Jordan Davis’ double-tracked croons and his guitar’s pleasantly layered crunch, plus jovial arpeggios from T Jay Christenson’s keyboards, beam rays of warmth into the ears of listeners in frigid flyover county.” ~SPIN Help Space Raft celebrate the release of its new Dusty Medical Records LP, Rubicon, by joining us on Tuesday, April 19th at 6pm for another installment of WMSE’s dynamic ‘Local/Live at Club Garibaldi’s’ series, featuring Milwaukee’s Space Raft. For those of you who remember his glorious “Merry Cactmus” show a few years back, buckle in and get ready for another round of holiday cheer. “Formed in 2000 with no sense of when to call it a day, Milwaukee’s pop-noise chaos theorists have recently reconvened after some time on the shelf. “IfIHadAHiFi are a whirlwind of feedback, samples, clanking guitars and de-tuned synths hiding some deceptively catchy pop songs. “Their most recent release was an online-only EP about particle physics written for an art/science installation show, if that gives you any indication of the subject matter you’ll normally find in the cyclone that is a typical HiFi set. “IfIHadAHiFi is currently writing songs for yet another record and are happy to share them with the dynamic and intelligent hosts of WMSE’s Local Live.” Join WMSE and IFIHadAHiFi for a farewell to the Milwaukee record label that they called home for years, Latest Flame Records. Latest Flame Records will be winding down with a pair of shows at Club Garibaldi on Friday, October 23rd and Saturday, October 24th.
