Ken Coomer joins me on the podcast today. Ken is a fantastic drummer, producer, and studio owner, as well as one of the few musicians I know that is actually from Nashville! Ken is well-known as the original drummer for Wilco, as well as the last for Uncle Tupelo, bands that literally defined the alt-country genre in the mid-90's. But before that, Ken came up in the punk and alternative rock scene here in Nashville with his band Clockhammer, and since leaving Wilco in 2002, he has had an incredible career as a studio drummer and producer, operating most recently out of his studio just a few blocks away from me in East Nashville called Cartoon Moon Recording. Ken was heavily involved in the recording of Uncle Tupelo's classic “Anodyne”, as well as the Wilco albums “FM”, “Being There”, “Summerteeth”, “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot” and the “Mermaid Avenue” projects with Wilco and Billy Bragg. After his run with Wilco, Ken returned to Nashville to try his hand at session work and producing. He's played with and recorded on albums for Steve Earle, Will Hoge, Al Green, Tim Finn, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris and many more. He's also had an incredible run producing some huge Spanish artists, which is an intriguing left-turn that his more recent career has taken, with artists like Chetes, and AppleTree - albums that were huge in Mexico and Columbia. It was great to have Ken drop in to speak about all of this amazing history. Death Metal frontman and Heavy Hole Podcast host Will Smith joins us this week. I've been a fan of his since my old band Anodyne shared played a show with his old band Biolich back in the dim past in some forgotten basement in Upstate New York. Most recently, he is fronting Reeking Aura, whose album Blood and Bone Meal was on heavy rotation around here back in 2022. Intro: “All of the Dark Things” – Mike Hill Outro: “Harvesting the Hatchet” – Reeking Aura

Anodyne 2: Return to Dust is a personal favorite of ours - and it actually has some personal meaning to our friendship, too. I'm just podcasting my Wares. Welcome back to NOCLIP Pocket! Today, we're talking about Anodyne, a Zelda-like indie game from ten years ago, which, boy does that just feel like forever these days. Anodyne doesn't so much have a shtick as it just tries to be a solid action adventure game while exploring its mechanics and themes, and realistically that's all it needs to be. This is a decently well focused game that understands its own scope very well, and because of that it manages to hold up incredibly against the passing of time. Anodyne takes place within a dream and explores a variety of settings from apartment buildings and hotels to fantasy forests and abstract representations of “place,” which keeps each new area feeling fresh which does wonders for keeping the player engaged as they go through it. Its mechanics are mostly simple, as it doesn't port over the item collection aspects of a Zelda game, but it does have depth in the mechanics it does have, which are both a little surprising and largely unexplained. It manages to hold a bit of mystery all while being a focused, unassuming little game, and is definitely worth playing if you haven't already. We're going to be talking about balancing tone in a game with so many different aesthetic elements within it, what areas we felt were most well executed and most unexpected, and we no joke read a definition out of a dictionary, so get absolutely pumped for that. Thank you again for joining us this week! It's been a couple months since we've done an entirely unthemed pocket, and Anodyne has been on our list for a while (it was relatively new when the podcast started, unbelievably), so we finally got to bring it out. If you played Anodyne, were you early enough to have played before the remaster? If not, do you think the game holds up after so many years? Let us know in the comments or over on our Discord! Next time, we're going to be talking about Rollerdrome, and for no other reason than we wanted to. Which changes the tone of the end of these descriptions, I'm realizing. I got very used to being able to just sort of follow a formula. But it's not “Retrovember” where we're talking about all the games featuring 90's trends like rollerblading or something, so this will just have to do. We hope you'll join us then!
Welcome home. Welcome back to the podcast! Today, we're talking about Midnight Manor, a late entry suggestion for Pocket this Halloween that ended up probably saving our schedule. Midnight Manor is a short horror-themed platformer from a solo developer that encourages players to play the game multiple times in different ways to see all the narrative possibilities it has to offer. Mechanically speaking, the game is simple, revolving around carrying items necessary for progression from place to place and navigating the titular manor. This simple gameplay lends itself, in a way, to the multiple ending-based design of the game, encouraging you to make small optimizations to make each successive run a bit faster, but admittedly does very little to make the game more engaging to go through each time. With no enemies, and therefore no fail state, to speak of, what is left to really engage with lies in its atmosphere, music, art and narrative content. All of these things are subjective, but given the short time investment to actually complete the game, and even seeing all the endings isn't going to add all that much to your total playtime, it is likely worth the low barrier to entry to playing. We're going to be talking about how character design can raise questions and eyebrows and our thoughts on the intentionality of it, what vibes the presentational aspects of the game put off, and we theorize on what this game may be a sequel to. Thank you for joining us again this week! Midnight Manor was a strangely nostalgic experience that harked back to indie games during our more experimental years when we were just trying anything we could find. That said, it's a mixed bag, though still more polished and with more thought than you might expect from a project that was this tiny. Did Midnight Manor send you back to a simpler time? Did it get you to play through it more than once? Let us know in the comments, or over in the Discord, where the suggestion for this game came from. As I said at the beginning, our time was rather tight this month, and our last Halloween game is going to bleed over into November a little bit, but we're always happy to try weird things for October and this certainly qualifies. Next time, we're going to be talking about Anodyne for a bit more of an adventure-y feel for November, so be sure to check back with us then!

Steph went on vacation to Milwaukee and brought back a bag of Anodyne Coffee. First she tells us the story of the marathon running founder that has built an incredibly successful business in Milwaukee over the last 25 years. Then we try a coffee from Anodyne, a single-origin coffee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a region that is hard to get coffee from due to the ongoing political instability of the country. In this episode we learn about the history of the DRC and how it has shaped the current situation today. Steph also tells about coffee growing in the DRC and the challenges that farmers face getting their coffee exported. We're not going to lie, this episode is a real bummer. But Steph tells a captivating story and it's important that we bring awareness to the hardships that the coffee farmers face. I've known Terry Taylor for, by my estimation, 20 years plus. We met back in my Anodyne days when we toured with his band Caligari. Over the years our paths have crossed on the long winding road. Most recently, Terry co-own 1313 Mockingbird Lane with his wife Liz, in Lawrence, KS. Though we spend a lot of time talking about the shop, we also get into deeper topics that will resonate with a lot of you. We all have our own stories over the past two plus years of pandemic life and Terry shares his. Intro: “All the Dark Things” – Mike Hill Outro: “Halloween” - Misfits

Anodyne audible analgesic potion, soothing music blended with 174 Hz frequency Your own potion for pain relief. For best results listen for a minimum of 15 minutes or as long as you want. 174 Hz Solfeggio Frequency Music – The Healing Frequency The lowest solfeggio frequency is 174 Hz, also known as the healing frequency. It has the greatest impact on the body and physical health. People mainly experience pain relief from this frequency, although it also reduces stress. The 174 Hz solfeggio frequency may produce these effects by lessening tension in the body. The low frequency relaxes muscles, reducing stress and acting as a natural analgesic or pain reliever. People who use this frequency report finding relief from back pain, migraines, knee pain, and more. Works well on humans, animals, supernatural creatures, anything with a physical form. If you've read all the way down here you are awesome, you are the real MVP of this show. Best with headphones or surround sound system or even your car's audio system. I hope this helps you and I hope you enjoy. It's been a while since I've done any healing music. This year has seen a ton of triple A releases that have dominated sales charts and come to define the year in gaming thus far. What has been missing, however, has been the top tier indie games that have been seen in years past. This year has, of course, HAD indie games with things like Trek To Yomi, Nobody Saves The World, and Weird West getting attention from press outlets and Nintendo having its indie showcase just over 2 weeks ago. However, just last year, by this point we had Cyber Shadow, Olija, Habroxia 2, Anodyne 2, Loop Hero, Mundaun, Before Your Eyes, and that's just a few of the indie games to have come out. So with the relative lack of quality titles this year and a relatively nice lull in triple A releases coming right now, we thought it would be the best time to talk about some of our favorite indie games so that you, fine listener, can maybe try theme during the relative slow period of gaming this year. The Good Hand (https://www.thegoodhand.org/) is a blistering read, telling the tale of his journey to North Dakota at the height of the shale-gas revolution that turned parts of the state into a latter-day gold rush. With the paperback version having just been released, Michael joined me to discuss a new song called Restless Companion. Restless Companion was one of a few new songs accompanying the audiobook of The Good Hand. It is a breezy tune that would fit right at home on Uncle Tupelo's Anodyne, or Son Volt's Trace. The song itself is an ode to The Good Hand and all the literal blood, sweat, and tears that went into it. So sit down, grab a beer, and welcome back Michael Patrick F. Smith to For Songs.
Siri Undlin's musical journey started at a very young age. The founding member and bandleader of Humbird, an outstanding Minneapolis-based folk project, is the daughter of a Lutheran preacher and she sang in the church's choir as a child. Piano lessons and guitar tutorials soon followed and, by the time she was in middle school, she was regularly performing in Irish pubs in the Twin Cities as a member of a band called Celtic Club. While she's been immersed in the arts for the majority of her life, Undlin continues to be driven by music and eager to keep creating. Recently, during a day off from Humbird's ongoing tour, which includes an April 21 performance at Anodyne in Walker's Point, in belated support of 2021's wonderful Still Life, Undlin spoke to My First Band host Tyler Maas about the tour, the process of making the album in isolation, Humbird's Patreon page and what's to come. Along the way, the conversation touched upon her extensive musical history, formative experiences and relationships she made in the Minneapolis music scene in her teens and 20s, what early tours taught her, and why the process of songwriting will always seem magical. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and Humbird ("Plum Sky").

A perfect album—one with no fillers, no bad songs, all greatness—can be pretty hard to come by. But, after decades of meticulous searching, Jared has found those happy few. This time, he features the alternative country group, Uncle Tupelo, and their perfect album “Anodyne.” Next up, Jared welcomes the esteemed Joe Patrice to discuss legal journalism, law firm horror stories, politics, and whether objective reporting still exists. And, this time on the Rump Roast, Joe quizzes and Jared takes the hot seat for a round of obscure Simpsons trivia. Joe Patrice is a senior editor at Above the Law. -------- Since we talked about alt-country pioneers Uncle Tupelo, here's a playlist featuring the best from the Uncle Tupeloverse. -------- Our opening track is Two Cigarettes by Major Label Interest. The music for the Legal Trends Report Minute is I See You by Sounds Like Sander. Our closing track is Front Porch Etude #2 by Heartland Nights. Special thanks to our sponsors TimeSolv, Clio, Scorpion, and Alert Communications.

It's that season—there's snow on the ground, and it's time for the annual "year in review" episode. Your nice hosts are getting ready to take a break from recording for a few weeks while serving up some of our favorite episodes from the past year. But before we start hibernating, there's a lot to discuss! What did we accomplish this year, and how do we feel about it? What are our goals for next year? Are we taking on any fun projects during our hiatus? And what are we looking forward to playing next year (besides all the Kirby games, of course)?Nice Games Club is five years old! That's a solid handful of years. Happy birthday show, and thanks to you all for listening! The feeling is real, even if this video isn't.
