Long-time listeners know that I'm the proud father of triplets and anyone who has seen me perform stand-up knows that I lean on my experiences raising them heavily when I perform. Well, today's guest on Uncorking a Story, Cort Casady is also a father of triplets and joined me to talk about his latest book Not Your Father's America: An Adventure Raising Triplets in a Country Being Changed by Greed. Meet Cort Casady Cort is a TV writer-producer, songwriter, playwright, and author. He has won two Emmy Awards and three NAACP Image Awards for his work as a writer-producer in television. He began his TV writing career by creating the story and characters for a five-installment movie mini-series called Kenny Rogers as The Gambler. He went on to help format and launch the long-running talent competition, Star Search with Ed McMahon, the forerunner of American Idol. His credits include numerous other series, awards shows, and specials. For the past 19 years, he has been supervising producer of the American Film Institute tributes to America's leading actors and filmmakers, including AFI's tributes to George Clooney in 2018, Denzel Washington in 2019, and Julie Andrews this year (after being delayed by COVID for two years). His songs have been recorded by Crystal Gayle, Jessie Colter, and Marshall Chapman and commissioned for the films Electric Horseman and Honeysuckle Rose. His musical play, King of the Road: The Roger Miller Story, co-written with Mary Miller, had its world premiere at the Laguna Playhouse in Laguna Beach in 2017. His memoir, Not Your Father's America: An Adventure Raising Triplets in a Country Being Changed by Greed, was just published. Key Topics: Emotions experienced while having difficulty trying to start a family How a sense of humor helps your sanity (and marital relationship) when raising triplets. Sanity-saving advice given to him by a nurse before leaving the hospital. The importance of rasing multiples as individuals and not part of “a set.” Cort's take on the changes taking place in the America his triplets are inheriting. They look at look at the connections between the Akrida and Supernatural S7's Leviathan and delve further into differences between the two series: beyond the odd ghouls to the watchdogs left behind by the Men of Letters and the different way that magic seems to work. Yes, there is more talk about radio waves. Yes, they talk about the closet scene and the kiss scene and the reflections of Supernatural's "Despair." How do we move through pain? What forms can we use to practice communal identity with others and promote honesty before God? How do liturgies form us? Part of charting the cultural landscape for Christian leaders is promoting forms for communal and historical identity, rather than a flippant individualism. #827 - Marty Panzer The Marty Panzer Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. Are you here? If you're here, your work is done! All you have to do now is listen. So, we saw in the paper that Manilow is talking about his first new pop album in years. Which is the perfect segue for this: We've got an interview queued up from the archives, one of Paul's all time favorites. It's also the interview that has received the most emails from people who tuned in. A great newspaper journalist named Brandee A. Thomas was interviewing Paul back in 2011. Paul told her: “Probably my favorite interview of all times was with a lyricist named Marty Panzer. He wrote ‘Through the Years' for Kenny Rogers and he wrote a lot of songs for Barry Manilow.” So who is Mr. Panzer? Marty Panzer is a great lyricist who has songs known all over the world. He began writing songs with his friend Barry Manilow when they worked in the CBS-TV mailroom. They wanted a career in music so they began writing commercial jingles. From there, you could say Marty Panzer's songs have more than taken off–he wrote songs for Barry Manilow like “It's a Miracle,” “This One's for You,” “All the Time,” and “Even Now.” Not only has Marty Panzer written songs for Barry Manilow, but he wrote the Kenny Rogers classic “Through the Years.” His songs have been recorded by the likes of Dionne Warwick, Frankie Valli, Gladys Knight, Julio Iglesias, Dusty Springfield, and others. Marty Panzer has 35 gold and platinum records, four BMI million play awards, a 3 million play award, and record sales in excess of 70 million units. Impressive, isn't it? There's also a live event called “An Evening with Marty Panzer,” featuring songs, stories and performances by many guest composers and artists. Paul saw “An Evening with Marty Panzer” in 2012, and we'll tell you that story soon. Stay tuned. Real quick, just remember that The Paul Leslie Hour is made possible by people just like you. Just go right here, and we thank you for being a patron of the spoken word. Okay. The songs of Marty Panzer are loved by many, and the host of this show is no exception. It is our pleasure to present a great and passionate lyricist, a man who says he is about … “things that last.” The Marty Panzer interview was played on the radio many times, and now it's available on all of the new media like Spotify, Apple, iHeartRadio and more. It is our hope that what you are about to hear will find a way into your heart and soul. Let's pull out that precious tape. Let's listen together. The Paul Leslie Hour is a talk show dedicated to “Helping People Tell Their Stories.” Some of the most iconic people of all time drop in to chat. Frequent topics include Arts, Entertainment and Culture.

Conned, swindled, or bilked, about 50 million Americans were ripped off by scammers in 2020. What deadens a person to preying on another? Tricksters commit crudely constructed fraud. Jung said they are “not really evil [but do] the most atrocious things from sheer unconsciousness and unrelatedness.” Cheaters may have behaved decently until tempted by need and opportunity and then become caught in a web of deception. Narcissists exploit others due to an inflated need for admiration and status that forecloses empathy and relatedness--and crooks turn predation, power, and risk-taking into a career. They lack authentic affiliation with others and an abiding sense of self; egotism and performative grandiosity substitute for feeling and being. The scammer unwittingly scams himself by seeking false gold in the external world. Real gold lies within. Here's the dream we analyze: “I'm with my family in a grand dining room, around a large table with lots of food on it. It's going to be dad's funeral. I hear that mum is really upset because she wants to see dad's body before they bury him. Some men bring dad's body directly past the table where we are sitting, and as they bring the body past, I recite the lyrics to the Kenny Rogers song “The Gambler” to my brother. I look at him sincerely, and I clearly say: “On a warm summer's evening, on a train bound for nowhere, I met up with a gambler, we were both too tired to sleep. We took turns in staring out the window at the darkness Until the boredom overtook us, and he began to speak. He said, “Son, I've made a life out of reading people's faces Knowing what the cards were by the way they held their eyes. And if you don't mind me saying, I can see you're out of aces, and for a taste of your whiskey, I'll give you some advice. You've got to know When to hold 'em, Know when to fold 'em, Know when to walk away, Know when to run, You never count your money When you're sittin' at the table, There'll be time enough for countin,' When the dealin's done, Now every gambler knows, The secret to survivin,' Is knowin' what to throw away, And knowin' what to keep, 'Cause every hand's a winner, And every hand's a loser, And the best you can hope for Is to die in your sleep.” Then I stop, and we start to eat the food.” REFERENCES: Bernie Madoff, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernie_Madoff Elizabeth Holmes, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Holmes George Santos, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Santos John Carreyrou. There are two important aspects of living a fulfilling life: taking care of yourself and being kind. Do not let the negativities of life bring you down. Be your own advocate and pay the goodness forward by being an advocate for others. Even the smallest of acts can make a big difference in someone's life.In this episode of The Mentee Podcast, I interview the voice behind Scooby Doo, Scott Innes, about how he pushed through life and achieved all his goals. He also shares the value of kindness and his now-life mission of paying goodness forward. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation:People are stewards of goodwill. Do not live in the past. Instead, imagine the future. Be kind. You can be the answer or the cure to someone's life. Learn to sell yourself. Episode Highlights:[09:23] Scott's Trophy StoryScott shares that he has a trophy superglued in his house. It was an award he won as a child that was destroyed to pieces after an incident with his mother. His stepfather fixed the trophy and the act has been a consistent reminder that people are stewards of goodwill. [11:56] Reaching Untapped PotentialIt is easier to remember the past than it is to imagine the future. People often show up daily living from their past. This keeps them from tapping their potential for wholeness. Scott likes to go where people say he can't. [23:49] Scott's Three Life Goals Scott shares that he had three major goals: to write a song for Kenny Rogers, to win a CMA award, and to become the voice of Scooby Doo. He was able to achieve all of these goals despite people telling him he could not. [24:47] A Mission to Pay It ForwardScott has had a lot of serendipitous moments in his life that inspired him to pay the goodness forward. He knows that he is imperfect and he has regretted a lot of life decisions. But this does not stop him from continuously doing good things for people -- even the people he doesn't know. You could be the answer to someone's cure for their life. [28:04] Selling & Believing in YourselfPeople have so much talent, but some are just too afraid to speak up. You will struggle if you don't believe in yourself. Remember, you control your destiny. Scott has been a firm believer in believing in oneself, keeping one's feet on the ground, and reaching for the stars. Control your destiny. Learn to sell yourself.Notable quotes from the Episode:[10:43] “We, as people, are stewards of goodwill.”[25:57] “You, today, could be the answer to someone's cure in their life.”[28:51] You got to sell yourself. If you believe in your goods, you got to do it.Resources Mentioned:Connect with Wyatt Graves: LinkedIn | Website The Mentee Podcast: Website | Apple | SpotifyConnect with Scott Innes: LinkedIn

This is the one where Vaughn is in a coma for most of the episode, Jack almost gets shot, Sloane becomes a double agent (?!), and Lauren asks Sydney to put in for a transfer. This is also the one where Bree (@bleach226) inserts her own fanfiction into her episode watch Bree and Jess (@jesspkoehler) get mad at Lauren for asking for that transfer. Then Sam spins the dial on the ole satellite radio and uncovers the saga of Dodie Stevens, who scored a hit with "Pink Shoelaces" just shy of her 13th birthday and went on to record an answer song to "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town": "Billy, I've Got To Go To Town." 1968 was a year of disappointments for the Monkees. During this year their television series was cancelled, their first motion picture effort failed at the box office, and band member Peter Tork would leave the group at the end of the year. Despite all this they would still find success in their fifth studio album, The Birds, The Bees & the Monkees. This album would chart at number 3 in the United States and would sell over a million copies.Members Mickey Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork had gained artistic control and the right to play their own instruments by 1967, and all band members were credited as producers for the songs on this album. However, much of the music on this album was created by members going their own separate ways and working with session musicians to create the tracks, with few collaborative efforts represented on the album. Nevertheless, the album shows a diverse range of styles from broadway pop, to country & western, to psychedelia. Songs from Mickey Dolenz, Davy Jones, and Michael Nesmith are represented on the album, and only Peter Tork is excluded. Tork would contribute piano work to the song “Daydream Believer,” but little else on the album.Friend of the show Mike Fernandez brings us this album in Wayne's absence. Daydream BelieverJohn Stewart of the Kingston Trio wrote this song, and it was originally performed by the Monkees with Davy Jones singing lead. It hit number 1 on the US charts. The original lyrics were “and now you know how funky I can be,” but “funky” was changed to “happy” due to concerns that funky might have drug or other unsavory references.Auntie's Municipal Court Mickey Dolenz sings lead on this track composed by Michael Nesmith and Keith Allison. We feel it has a “jangle pop country feel.” The title doesn't appear in the lyrics, and writer Michael Nesmith has no recollection why it was named as it was. It was not the only song whose title was not referenced in the song. Valleri Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart wrote this song with Davy Jones on lead. It reached number 3 on the US charts and would be the last top 10 showing for the Monkees. Guitar work is done by Louie Shelton, a session guitarist with the Wrecking Crew.Zor and Zam Bill and John Chadwick penned this track, sung by Mickey Dolenz. It is an unusual anti-war song in the Monkee's catalogue. The lyrics describe preparation for a war between two kingdoms, but no one shows up when the war is supposed to happen. This psychedelic track closes the album. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series “The Andy Griffith Show”This long running series on the life and time of Sheriff Andy Taylor of Mayberry, North Carolina ended its run in this month. STAFF PICKS:Kiss Me Goodbye by Petula ClarkBrian's leads off the staff picks with a Les Reed and Barry Mason composition. This song would reach number 15 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and would be the last time Petula Clark reached into the top 30 on that chart. Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In) by The First Edition Bruce brings us a psychedelic rock song recorded by the First Edition as their second single, and the first to feature Kenny Rogers on lead vocals. It peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Charts and was Rogers' first top 10 hit. The solo is played by Glen Campbell with heavy compression and tremolo to get the psychedelic feel. The lyrics are a warning about the dangers of LSD.Lady Madonna by the Beatles Rob's staff pick is a well-known tune. This was written by Paul McCartney, and marked a change into a more rock sound from the psychedelic sound they had previously explored. It talks about a working class mother who has something to do every day of the week. A Beautiful Morning by the RascalsMike features a very optimistic tune from a prolific group. This easy breezy song was written by Rascals members Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati, Jr. in Honolulu, Hawaii, where beautiful mornings are a common occurrence. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:2001: A Space Odyssey (Also Sprach Zarathustra by Ricard Strauss)Stanley Kubrick would make this Richard Strauss theme famous in his epic science fiction movie based on the Arthur C. Clarke book. The film as released this month in 1968....and we couldn't pronounce it either!!
1 Samuel 1:19-28They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord; then they went back to their house at Ramah. Elkanah knew his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered her. In due time Hannah conceived and bore a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, “I have asked him of the Lord.” The man Elkanah and all his household went up to offer to the Lord the yearly sacrifice, and to pay his vow. But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, “As soon as the child is weaned, I will bring him, that he may appear in the presence of the Lord, and remain there forever; I will offer him as a nazirite for all time.” Her husband Elkanah said to her, “Do what seems best to you, wait until you have weaned him; only—may the Lord establish his word.” So the woman remained and nursed her son, until she weaned him. When she had weaned him, she took him up with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine. She brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh; and the child was young. Then they slaughtered the bull, and they brought the child to Eli. And she said, “Oh, my lord! As you live, my lord, I am the woman who was standing here in your presence, praying to the Lord. For this child I prayed; and the Lord has granted me the petition that I made to him. Therefore I have lent him to the Lord; as long as he lives, he is given to the Lord.” She left him there for the Lord. 1 Samuel 2:1-10Hannah prayed and said, “My heart exults in the Lord; my strength is exalted in my God. My mouth derides my enemies, because I rejoice in my victory.“There is no Holy One like the Lord, no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God. Talk no more so very proudly, let not arrogance come from your mouth; for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed. The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble gird on strength. Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, but those who were hungry are fat with spoil. The barren has borne seven, but she who has many children is forlorn. The Lord kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up. The Lord makes poor and makes rich; he brings low, he also exalts. He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap, to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor. For the pillars of the earth are the Lord's, and on them he has set the world.“He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness; for not by might does one prevail. The Lord! His adversaries shall be shattered; the Most High will thunder in heaven. The Lord will judge the ends of the earth; he will give strength to his king, and exalt the power of his anointed.” If you know from whence the theme for this little Advent series comes – inspired, for lack of a better word, by Michael Scott from ‘The Office' – it may seem more than a little irreverent for these days and this season and for the spirit of what we're up to on these Wednesday evenings. And that's kind of the point. As a punchline for any number of really bad – often wildly inappropriate and even offensive – jokes, “that's what she said” doesn't exactly lift up women or hold them in high regard a lot of the time. But, neither does the history of Christianity, its interpretation of Scripture and the place of women in it.So, in addition to being pretty funny, I mean for all of this to be a clever and more serious way to pay some meaningful attention to the role of women in the narrative of the Christmas story. I hope we'll consider them and learn from them and be inspired by them for whatever they have to teach us about longing for Jesus; about living in hope; about being faithful; about loving boldly; about sacrificing generously; about responding to God in ways that change hearts, lives, minds and the world, even, as each of the women we'll celebrate do, in their own, holy, abundantly faithful way.And tonight, we're going way back – way, way, way back – to Hannah, someone who, I wager, won't make it into the preaching or teaching for most people this Christmas season. As we just heard… as some of you know… Hannah was the mother of the prophet Samuel. She prayed to have a child. She hoped for a baby. She begged for a boy.And it's meaningful to know that Hannah was one of two wives to a guy named Elkanah. Elkanah's other wife was a baby-making machine – she had sons and daughters aplenty, though we don't how many for sure. And Elkanah's other wife, described as Hannah's “rival,” was terrible about it. She “provoked” and “irritated” Hannah, as the story goes, which I imagine means she mocked her and made fun of her and shamed her for not being able to have children as easily or as prolifically as her. Having children, of course – back in the day – was confirmation of your worth as a woman; it assured your status and place in a family; it was a very practical source of security (you'd have people to protect and provide for you, should you ever be widowed or alone). Motherhood was an outward, undeniable sign of value for a woman – to her husband, to her family, in her community and culture, too. A woman's primary job, main goal, solitary aim and objective in life – as far as most were concerned – was to have children. So Hannah may have wanted a child – and a boy, in particular – because her mothering instincts were in full effect. She may also have wanted a baby because she wanted to make her husband happy. (The Bible tells us that Elkanah loved Hannah, in spite of the fact that she hadn't given him a child, yet.) But Hannah may have wanted a child – and a boy, in particular – because she longed for affirmation of her worth, of her value, of her esteem, in her own eyes, in the eyes of her God, in the eyes of the world around her … and maybe so she could tell that “sister wife” of hers, Elkanah's other wife, to take a hike – or something like that. That's why Hannah prayed hard – so much so that Eli, the high priest, thought she was drunk or crazy at first. But Hannah prayed to and she bargained intensely with God. She promised God that she would commit her baby boy to a life of sacrifice and service to the Lord. And then it happened. God delivered. And Hannah delivered. And she kept her promise, too – her end of all of that prayerful bargaining she had made with God. She loved, cared for, fed and nurtured her little boy Samuel until he was able to live without her – and she handed him over to the Lord; to live in the house of the high priest, Eli, and to become one of the greatest prophets in all of Israel's history. So, much like Mary, Hannah was gifted a baby boy she knew she'd love, cradle and care for – and would ultimately hand over to the service of God, too, for the sake of the world. And Hannah's prayer, a poem or song set to verse – was prayed in celebration and with thanksgiving for God's answered prayer … for the gift of her little boy. And Hannah's song sounds like the original to Mary's cover version, so many generations later, in the Gospel of Luke – the Magnificat we just heard and which we will sing over and over again on these Wednesday nights. In Hannah's song, her heart exults in the Lord, she smiles at her enemies because she rejoices in God's salvation. Likewise, Mary's soul magnifies the Lord and her spirit rejoices in God her savior.Hannah says, “the bows of the mighty are broken,” and “the feeble gird on strength.” Mary says the mighty are cast down from their thrones and the humble in heart are lifted up.For Hannah, “Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, but those who were hungry are fat with spoil.” Mary says the same, but more simply, “God has filled the hungry with good things.”You get the picture. The undeniable similarities between Hannah's prayer and Mary's song of praise – both prayed in response to the news of a promised child – draw a straight line between these two women of faith. I think it shows a profound theological understanding from both of them, about their God – and ours. A God who treasures and cares for the least among us. A God who protects the vulnerable and who challenges the powers that be. A God who uses the least likely suspects to bring justice, to provoke peace, to proclaim grace, to practice mercy, to do hard, holy, brave, beautiful things for the sake of the Kingdom. A God who keeps promises. And, I think it implies that Hannah and Mary both knew their scripture and the stories and traditions of their faith and that they passed all of this along to their little boys.(In my childhood, whether I knew it or appreciated it or understood it all at the time – or not – like many of you, I took in the hymns and liturgy of worship, of course. And I hope my boys – and the young people around here over the years – have done the same. And I heard my mom sing in the choir and lead worship in the praise band. And I grew up hearing a lot of John Denver, Anne Murray, Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, and Dolly Parton, of course, courtesy of my mother, too – which makes for a pretty good playlist, to be honest. And I hope you have similar memories of your own mother's music from way back when.)See, I imagine, in those early days of nursing and nurturing Samuel before he was offered up in service to the Lord, that he heard his mother's prayer a time or two. That she whispered those words into his hear while he nursed. That she sang them around the fire while she cooked and he played at her feet. That she taught them to her little boy when he misbehaved … “Samuel, the wicked will be cut off in darkness, boy!” “Don't make me tell you again.”And that she comforted little Samuel with them, too, when he needed it most: “There is no rock like God, child…” “He raises up the poor, sweetheart…. he lifts up the lowly, baby boy … God guards the feet of the faithful, son. Don't you ever forget it.”So, many thanks to Hannah tonight, for her patient faithfulness, for her selfless sacrifice, for her powerful proclamation, for the profound inspiration she must have been for Jesus, even, by way of Mary, who certainly knew something of Hannah's prayer and her faithful response to God's kept promises.Hannah prayed with thanksgiving. She professed her faith. She promised justice. She proclaimed hope. She pronounced God's grace, good news, mercy and abundance. That's what she said. May we do the same as we wait – for Jesus – and in all the days that follow his arrival this Christmas.Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

Reflecting on how holiday traditions can make us happy. Transcript: Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in about 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life. I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and holiday traditions are so fun, right? Today, I'm curious what your holiday traditions are. I love learning what people do, what is fun and how they bring joy into the holidays. Traditions are hopeful, they bring us happiness and it's fun to have something to look forward to, that makes you happy. Last year in my membership community I asked this question and the answers varied from cutting down the christmas tree to being mindful and remembering the sentiment around the season and how it should last all year long. For us, we have lots of traditions. Going to Christmas Eve church and then looking at Christmas lights around town is always so fun for us. We also have a tradition of gingerbread house decorating with our dear friends Marcela and Emelina. We've been doing this with the kids for almost 10 years. I'm obsessed with matching Christmas jammies, so that has to be a tradition at this point. Although, the children are less excited as they used to be, especially now that I have a high schooler, but you know what - they do it with little to no fussing because they know how happy it makes me. Oh, also, when I decorate the tree, I play Kenny Rogers and Alabama holiday albums, like my mom did. I stole a tradition from my sister, the wrapping paper under the tree on Christmas morning always has Santa on it. He's so clever, his elves wrap my sister's presents with Santa paper too. I think it's so fun to hear what traditions other families have, so please, share!! We need the ideas and you might just inspire someone else to start a new tradition. Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin' Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure Mets players from the team past. Kenny Rogers had a long and circuitous path to the major leagues, but slowly but surely rode two important pitching traits—durability and left-handedness—to major league success. Rogers rose from a LOOGY to a bullpen staple to a rotation staple in Texas—making baseball history with a perfect game along the way—all while battling the front office on salary issues and befuddling teammates with his aloof manner. Rogers signed with the Yankees prior to the 1996 season and struggled, but the team overcame those struggles to win a World Championship. After resurrecting his career in Oakland, the Mets traded for Rogers for the 1999 stretch run. He provided 5 wins and his inning-eating stability down the stretch as the team barely made the playoffs, but he struggled mightily in the 1999 playoffs, eventually walking in the series-ending run in New York's epic Game 6 loss to the Braves in the NLCS.
