J. Elvis Weinstein was a head writer on many shows so he knows a good joke while Jay just jokes often from character. On this show we sort out the differences. Also J. talks about his funny family. Hobbies like ice cream, bad jokes, bubble gum jokes, fortune cookies, losing money on documentaries, saving your marriage by wasting less money than your wife thinks, Mystery Science Theater, old credits, and how jokes ruin dramas, hack jokes, improvisations, the perfect punchline, and hating Seinfeld. Bio: J. Elvis Weinstein began his stand-up comedy career at age 15 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. At 17, he was one of the founding writer/performers of "Mystery Science Theater 3000” (MST3K) as the original voice/puppeteer of robots Tom Servo and Gypsy, and the role of Dr. Lawrence Erhardt.Since moving to Los Angeles, he has worked as a writer/producer on a wide range of network TV comedy, including "Freaks and Geeks", "Malcolm and Eddie", "Dead Last", and "My Guide to Becoming a Rock Star.” He was also the Head Writer on "America's Funniest Home Videos" and "Later with Greg Kinnear". In 2008 he reunited with his MST3K co-stars to form “Cinematic Titanic” which toured U.S. Theaters as a live show and produced 12 DVDs, now available as a box set.J. Elvis has written and directed 3 films - 2 feature documentaries (“I Need You To Kill” & “Michael Des Barres: Who Do You Want Me To Be?”) and a comedy short (“The Mediocre Samaritan”). As a performer, he continues to perform as a stand-up (releasing the album “Chunks” in 2019), co-hosts the podcast “Thought Spiral” with comedian Andy Kindler, and recently co-starred in the feature film “The Fiddling Horse” (2020).
Andy and Jay talk about anger, falling down, therapy, neuropathy, parents, the power of singing, audio books, back aches, Quakers, the State of The Industry, the Thought Spiral podcast, Binghamton University, LSD, The Stump, and Moon Zappa's new book “Earth To Moon”, and running away from Jay Leno.Bio: Andy Kindler currently recurs on Fox's hit animation, Bob's Burgers and Comedy Central's long-running Tosh.O. He is also a regular on the critically praised Canadian web series, But I'm Chris Jericho (for which he was nominated as Best Supporting Actor by L.A. Webfest 2018). Andy was the host of Season 4 and 5 of Hulu's standup series, Coming to the Stage as well as a series judge on the seventh season of NBC's Last Comic Standing, the star of two half-hour Comedy Central Presents specials and was a frequent guest and correspondent on The Late Show with David Letterman with over 40 appearances. He has previously recurred on Everybody Loves Raymond, Showtime's I'm Dying Up Here, Disney's Wizards of Waverly Place, IFC's Maron and Comedy Central's The Daily Show. Other noteworthy credits include Portlandia, the HBO Young Comedians Special, Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist, Home Movies and The Larry Sanders Show. In July 2022, Andy became the first comedian to perform as a hologram, delivering his notorious State of the Industry Address from the relative safety of Van Nuys, CA. while appearing 3-dimensionally live at the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal.

SORRY/NOT SORRY charts how an open secret about comedian Louis C.K.'s sexual misconduct evolved into a front page article on The New York Times. Following the story's publication, Louis C.K. admitted “these stories are true” and faced initial repercussions, only to return to the stage nine months later. While the story of C.K.'s rise and fall largely played out in public, this film reveals the stories of three women who spoke out over the years about C.K.'s behavior. Through candor and surprising humor, the documentary gives voice to the nuanced and complicated experiences of Jen Kirkman, Abby Schachner, and Megan Koester. It presents new details about their encounters with Louis C.K. and unveils the extent of the personal and professional consequences they faced for speaking out about it. SORRY / NOT SORRY directors Caroline Suh and Cara Mones shed new light on questions about sex and power in the workplace, who gets to take the stage, and the role the public plays in these stories at large. Featuring interviews with the reporters who broke the original story – Melena Ryzik, Cara Buckley, and Jodi Kantor – along with comedians, gatekeepers and critics including Michael Ian Black, Michael Schur, Aida Rodriguez, Andy Kindler, Noam Dworman, and Wesley Morris, the film leaves viewers contemplating: who is afforded a second chance, and who is overlooked in the process? The Sklar Brothers started doing stand-up together as adolescent twins in St. Louis. A fortuitous encounter with Andy Kindler during college encouraged them they were on the right track. They came up in New York during the rise of the alt comedy scene, and performed at Eating It at Luna Lounge, and other venues like Surf Reality and Collective Unconscious on the Lower East Side. They have been stalwarts of the standup world ever since.Jason and Randy talk to Will about the differences between standup and improv, their experience making Held Up together (Crackle), and TAG IT!, the show they currently host at Largo and the Comedy Store.Recorded at Jett Road Studios------------------LIFE IN COMEDYInstagramJETT ROAD STUDIOSWebsiteInstagramYouTube

This week, we talk to comedian/actor Andy Kindler (Bob's Burgers, Late Night w/ David Letterman, Maron, Everybody Loves Raymond) & Mike Lisk (executive producer of The Best Show w/ Tom Scharpling and host of Egg Foo What?!) about a documentary whose subject matter is dear to both of their hearts (yet full of confusion and mystery for host Chris Slusarenko), The Grateful Dead documentary series, LONG STRANGE TRIP. These two have a history with each other, and out of the gate, an old Zappa argument and apology appear out of nowhere, and then it's off to the races. We discussed whether Bob Weir is essential to the band, the stage banter of the Grateful Dead, Andy's 70s rock band TransFusion, their viewpoints on Pigpen—the original rapper, which of the two drummers had the goods, Mountain Dew vs. Morning Dew, Andy's LSD induced concert going-ons and his naked prog-rock band stories, Mike's experience of almost being trampled at a Grateful Dead concert, pocket pool advice from the band, Tom Scharpling, Robert Hunter's lyrics, Donna & Keith, Mike meeting Garcia as a teenager, sneaking drugs into concerts, digitally erasing crowd nudity from concert footage, why they think they are the quintessential American band, The Velvet Underground and the dissonance of the Grateful Dead, Disco Dead, Marvin Gaye, can you be a cynic and give yourself over to the band, losing punk rock friends to the Dead, Altamont, tape trading, Europe '72, the sadness in the Jerry Garcia story, Hot Tuna, The Warlocks, Dead & Co., how the documentary is critical of a portion of their fan base, the Dead telling their fans to stop being assholes, Mickey Finn's father ripping the band off, the Phil Zone and Mike gives us a crash course on the essential shows and recordings to listen to.So let's time your trip perfectly on this very funny yet heartfelt episode of Revolutions Per Movie.ANDY KINDLER:twitter.com/AndyKindlerMIKE LISK:thebestshow.netEgg Foo What: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/egg-foo-what/id1635904703REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. It's a JAM PACKED Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Alex Pareene, Contributing Editor at the New Republic and host of the Politics of Everything podcast, to round up the week in news. Then, they're joined by actor and SAG-AFTRA member Andrew Leeds to discuss the most recent vote by the union to authorize a strike. And THEN, they're joined by comedian Andy Kindler, host of the Thought Spiral podcast! First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the Republicans' absurd budget proposal, the Democrats successfully killing it, and SAG-AFTRA going on strike, as well as the disgusting corporate proposals that got the film and TV industry to this point. Alex Pareene then joins as he dives into the continuing story of inflation, and what could have been if the establishment wasn't so keen on ignoring its roots in price gouging. Next, he, Emma, and Sam look to the Republicans' grotesque $900bln defense bill as perfectly exemplary of the GOP's complete capitulation to anti-woke politics despite its stunning lack of popularity – something that's also seen in the falling popularity of the once-prophesied DeSantis campaign, before wrapping up the interview with an assessment of New York state politics post-Cuomo and what a strong NY Democratic party could mean on the national level. Andrew Leeds then walks through the central issues facing SAG-AFTRA, discussing the massive role residuals play in actors' income, and in qualifying for healthcare and other union benefits, only for the streaming revolution to nearly take these payments off the shelves entirely. After expanding on the attempted gigification of the acting industry, Andrew wraps up by discussing the incredible spirit of solidarity in the union (and their sister orgs), and what those on the outside can do to help. Andy Kindler concludes the first half as he assesses the incredible grifting done by Jimmy Door, and tackles why the hell some famous people get so obsessed with being wrong they dive headfirst into bigotry. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Fran Drescher's killer remarks to help launch SAG-AFTRA's strike, and watch Peter Hotez aptly summarize the legitimacy of the “lab leak” theory. Ben Shapiro continues his attacks on women's rights, plus, your IMs! It's the first Casual Friday of 2023! Sam hosts Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. Then, Sam is joined by Andy Kindler, host of the Thought Spiral podcast! First, Sam runs through updates on the US' 50-year unemployment low, South Carolina's Supreme Court rejecting a 6-week abortion ban, and Kevin McCarthy racking up an even 12 losses for the Speakership since Tuesday, now looking to make it a baker's dozen. He also touches on the accessibility of the new abortion pill in red states, Biden's new authoritarian immigration policies, and dives into the importance of disallowing non-compete agreements in the fight for labor control. Digby then joins as they dive a little deeper into Kevin McCarthy's performance on the House floor this week, from pretending not to care about his repeated losses to not even being able to sell out correctly, and discuss parallels to his rise as John Boehner's heir apparent. Next, she and Sam get into the role that conservative media has been playing in the issue, and whether the Freedom Caucusers will get what they want (whatever that is) from this standoff. Andy Kindler joins next, as he and Sam talk liquor, Ryan Seacrest, and what it's like to be young guns in the comedy world, before parsing through Dave Rubin's reflections on DeSantis' nomination, the revealed abuse by Matt Schlapp, Chair of CPAC. Comedian Andy Kindler has very strong opinions on cancel culture, specifically regarding Louis C.K.'s so-called “cancellation” and comeback after sexual misconduct allegations. Lucky for New Abnormal podcast listeners, the “Bobs Burgers” and “Everybody Loves Raymond” actor decided to share all of them with host Andy Levy on this bonus episode. Hosted on Acast. Comedian Andy Kindler is my guest! He played the character "Andy", a fellow sportswriter on the TV show Everybody Loves Raymond, was a regular guest on Late Show with David Letterman, contributor to The Daily Show, and has performed on HBO. Andy and I had fun. I laughed. A lot! We shared stories, talked a little about politics a lot about fun stuff--like the comics who inspired him, what it was like working with David Letterman as well as both of us dunking on Bill Maher. I shared the story of how I got to be considered as a guest on Real Time and Andy is...Andy! Funny and loveable! Andy is a wonderful human and a hilarious comic. Learn more about your ad choices. It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Alex Pareene, Contributing Editor at the New Republic and proprietor of the AP newsletter on Substack, to round up the week in news. Then they are joined by Lucas Kunce, candidate for U.S. Senate in Missouri, to give us an update from the campaign trail. Afterwards, they're joined by comedian Andy Kindler, host of the Thought Spiral podcast! First, Sam and Emma dive into legislative updates from the Senate, from the Manchin-Schumer IRA deal and its backlash, to the GOP putting a stop to healthcare for veteran victims of agent orange, with the latter largely coming from the GOP's desire to punish democrats for the former (with Same-Sex Marriage reform also a potential right-wing punching bag). Alex Pareene then dives into why he won't hold his breath until the IRA bill is signed, as he explores the behind-the-scenes surprise at Manchin's maneuver, the op-ed pieces from the establishment placing the blame on him that pushed him over the edge, and the insanity of that being the final factor. Next, he, Sam, and Emma dive into the climate provisions as a reasonable first step in the right direction, the CHIPS bill as an important turn against globalization and towards a locally resilient supply chain, and the threat of Schedule F as we move into the midterms. They wrap up the interview by tackling the evergreen question of the neoliberal philosopher, “recession or nah?” Sam and Emma are then joined by Lucas Kunce as he walks through his experience running for Senate in Missouri just four days ahead of his primary, what sets him apart from the billionaire heiress running against him, and dives deep into the role of LGBTQ rights, reproductive care, and single-payer healthcare in his platform, before wrapping up with a conversation on his position as a veteran, and what lense that gave him into the oligarchy of defense contractors in the US. And in the Fun Half: Andy Kindler joins as he, Sam, and Emma parse through Jim Breuer's hour-long audition tape of him defecating with funny noises and calling it political comedy, before Sam and Emma dive into Jimmy Dore moving from generic reactionary anti-vax rhetoric to full on Scientological dianetics (fully researched, as seen in how well he reads the title of the study). Doocy and Kilmeade get real Fox and Frenemies on the question of trusting a poll that shows both Biden and Trump's numbers tanking, Justice Alito goes to Rome to complain about foreigners, and John Feal eviscerates the GOP's blockage of a bill for Veteran healthcare, plus, your IMs! Andy Kindler didn't produce "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" but he did make an appeance as the character (that was Andy Lassner), but he did make an appearance on her 90s ABC sitcom "Ellen" - just for fun https://linktr.ee/chapofym
Producer Danny Kapilian takes a spin this week. Danny is the kind of guy you hope you end up next to on an airplane --- he's got a million stories, and we manage to pack about half of them into a single hour. Danny talks about his ongoing tribute to Ralph Ellison, the ordeals of wrangling Randy onto his Harry Nilsson tribute album, and the Randy Newman - Peggy Lee connection that's easy to miss. And somehow we manage to cover Lauryn Hill, Debbie Harry, Joni Mitchell, Mingus, Terrace Martin, McCartney, Debbie Harry, Andy Kindler, and 20 other artists. Thanks Danny, you're truly a kindred spirit. A partial playlist of songs we discuss: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0hHTSctSBp806AgifzwZeq?si=X_ZlvyTbTUKLYV7SXHR2-w&utm_source=copy-link
Comedian Andy Kindler is my guest! He played the character "Andy", a fellow sportswriter on the TV show Everybody Loves Raymond, was a regular guest on Late Show with David Letterman, contributor to The Daily Show, and has performed on HBO. We had a lot of fun talking about what he's been up to (he has a new album out); what it was like to work on Letterman & how COVID impacted his career. We also talked about the Hulu miniseries "Pam & Tommy," the film "Licorice Pizza," our mutual love of "Boogie Nights" and so much more. An upbeat show during these dark times Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Alex Pareene, Contributing Editor at the New Republic and proprietor of the AP newsletter on Substack, to round up the week in news. Then, Sam and Emma are joined by comedian Andy Kindler, host of the Thought Spiral podcast! Alex, Sam, and Emma dive right into the Democrats being faced with their biggest fear (doing literally anything for the public) as they watch Nancy Pelosi absolutely rip a reporter a new one for asking about COVID when people are dying… but not the ones dying of COVID – simply dumping the pandemic to the side in favor of the Democrats' “single kitchen table issue” tactic, where they don't discuss anything but, in this case, Ukraine, and how they are once again turning to a very arbitrary scapegoating of Russia. Next, they dive into the absurdity of the Dems' (supposedly) popularist tactics, yet are scared to death of taking on “culture war” issues that are supported by vast majorities of the American public, from reproductive freedom to education and queer rights, instead reading limericks from Bono in support of the Ukrainian people, rather than, say, accepting Ukrainian refugees. Alex then leads Sam and Emma into a discussion of this fear-of-culture war that Democrats cannot overcome, and how their inaction on these issues, if anything, reinforces their inaction on genuine policy issues, especially when both of them are having rampant material effects as the right garners more and more state majorities, before they wrap up the interview with a discussion on the Cuomo coalition taking on cancel culture, with a guiding hand of the law helping them along the way. Sam and Emma also cover the horrors of the Idaho abortion bill, the 11k civilian deaths (supported by the US) in the war in Yemen that the US refuses to acknowledge, and the role the Supreme Court might play in the upcoming midterm elections. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma are joined by the great Andy Kindler, as he explores his proud time spent as a “Brief Boy,” and cover the beauty of Darlene Rudin, before they all get into the backlash to Dave Rubin (no relation) announcing that he and his husband are expecting a future baby, from friends and foes alike. Sam and Emma also cut up the pie with the ranking of US pizzas, and discuss the narrow scope of the things Democrats are actually fighting for, plus, your IMs! Andy Kindler: the in's, the outs & the others--
Ukrainian President Zelensky might be a former comedian but Putin is the real clown. Unhinged, erratic and currently trying to do regime change Ukraine, things have gotten very scary for everyday Ukranians, many who have fled the country while others take up arms. Francesca, Wajahat Ali and Andy Kindler break down the various aspects of Russia's war on Ukraine, from Zelensky's heroism to the hypocrisies of the American media and security apparatus to the sad lack of a united international antiwar movement to say nothing of a functional United Nations. Not a lot of jokes abound, but hey, war is hell. Finally in honor of the nomination of Kentaji Brown Jackson, the panel picks their Supreme Court nominees to grow the bench and support her!
