Part 1:We talk with John Nichols, who writes for the Nation magazine.Nichols discusses what Musk is doing to federal employees and how Democrats should IMMEDIATELY respond to each outrage. There is a lot of resistance to Trump and Musk, as shown by people who attend events sponsored by Democrats. These resistors should band together to make their collective voices heard. Among the MAGA cult members, Trump's lies are only viewed as weapons to be wielded to undermine the opposition, not promises or real statements of fact. We should not let this continue.A ray of hope, Germans voted 80% AGAINST the far right. We also discuss Musk's spending money on the Wisconsin Supreme Court race, as part of his game plan to reach closer to his goals.Part 2:We talk with Alexander Hinton, Ph.D, Professor Emeritus from Rutgers University, and researcher into the mindset of the MAGA cult.Prof. Hinton describes his work observing and documenting the MAGA cult activities and techniques used to keep the member loyal and excited. He describes his attendance at CPAC over the years, and how each event is designed to excite the audiences and keep them engaged. He reminds us to keep our eyes on Trump, because Musk can be discarded when he has absorbed the dislike of the electorate, and could be discarded, thus making Trump appear more sympathetic, and thus "not responsible" for Musk's actions. Music: From David Rovics, “The Richest Man in the World Says So”, 2025

Oh, those were the days! It's incredible how much has changed since I was a kid in Hinton, West Virginia. There was something almost adventurous about needing to go to the payphone two blocks away to talk with a friend. I remember it vividly. The payphone stood under a big tree right next to the courthouse. It felt like a secret mission every time I left the house, coins jingling in my pocket, ready to make that call. The payphone was a sturdy old thing with a heavy receiver and a slightly scratched glass window that always reflected the sun just right... Sermon Notes – "In Our Father's House: Finding Christ and Growing in Faith"Rev. Dr. Brad HintonDate: 12-29-2024Scripture Reference:Luke 2:41-52 – Jesus in the Temple at 12 Years OldKey Points to Reflect On:The Christmas Season TransitionThe Christmas season begins with the celebration of Christ's birth. As we move from preparation to celebration, we remember how Christ changed the world. The 12 days of Christmas invite us to celebrate Jesus' life and growth.Jesus' Growing UpIn today's scripture, Jesus is no longer a newborn; He is a 12-year-old boy.Jesus goes to the festival of Passover with His parents, but stays behind in the temple without informing them.Mary and Joseph's frantic search for Jesus mirrors the anxiety we may feel when we lose something or someone dear to us.The Parallels to “Home Alone”Just as in Home Alone, where a child is accidentally left behind, Mary and Joseph face a similar panic when they can't find Jesus. The emotional weight of losing a child is felt in both stories, highlighting the bond between parents and children.Jesus' Response to His Parents' WorryWhen Mary and Joseph find Jesus after three days, He is calm and explains: “Did you not know I must be in my Father's house?”Jesus is focused on His mission and relationship with God, even at a young age. This moment invites us to reflect on our relationship with God and where we “find” God in our own lives.Living Out Our Faith in the Father's HouseJesus teaches us that being in God's presence (the Father's house) is where we grow, ask questions, and encounter the divine. At Davidson UMC, we respond to our faith through actions like volunteering, supporting community efforts, and caring for one another.Reflection Question: How are you actively seeking God in your life? How are you growing deeper in faith? The Ongoing Work of God in Our LivesAs we close out 2024, we are called to reflect on how we've grown in faith and where God is still working in us.Sanctification is the ongoing process of growing closer to God and becoming more like Christ.Reflection Question: Are you further along in your faith this year than last? What steps can you take in the coming year to deepen your faith?Action Steps:Reflect on where you encounter God in your life—whether it's through worship, service, or relationships.Find ways to live out your faith in tangible ways at Davidson UMC or in your community.Commit to growing deeper in your relationship with God, asking questions, and seeking understanding.Prayer for the Week:God, thank You for the gift of Christ, who calls us to grow in faith and to seek Your presence in our lives. Help us to find You in all that we do and to continue to grow closer to You. Guide us in our service to others and help us reflect Christ in all we say and do. In Jesus' name, Amen.We invite you to continue this journey with us at Davidson UMC.Stay connected, grow in faith, and be a light to the world.

Elizabeth Hinton along with several other esteemed academics and scholars recently agreed to serve as advisors for the Vanguard Carceral Journalism Guild. Ten incarcerated writers will be trained and platformed as part of the guild. Hinton is a Professor of History and African American Studies at Yale University and a Professor of Law at Yale Law School. She is the Co-Director of the Institute on Policing, Incarceration, and Public Safety at the Hutchins Center for African & African American Research at Harvard University, and the author of America on Fire: The Untold History of Police Violence and Black Rebellion Since the 1960's (2021), and From the War on Poverty to the War on Crime: The Making of Mass Incarceration in America (2016). Hinton talks with Everyday Injustice about the upcoming project and her role in it. As Hinton explains: “the Vanguard Carceral Journalism Guild is something that is completely one of a kind and that it's amplifying original on the ground reporting by people who reside in confinement.” She adds, “I think one of the things that's really exciting about it is that it's not just targeting people on the outside, but it's also seeking to inform and ground conversations and movements, ideas that are happening on the inside. “Because there are intentional barriers erected between people who reside in the carceral state and those of us who live outside of it. It's really hard to get a sense of what is going on. I think most people who aren't connected to people who are incarcerated have no idea the kinds of conditions that are maintained, have no idea the kinds of violence that structures the entire system in every iota and every form. Have no idea the kinds of human rights abuses that are happening and the politics that are happening, as well as the amazing initiatives, the self activity that's going on inside prisons.” Listen as Elizabeth Hinton discusses the importance of carceral journalism and what this project will mean.

Matt and Tom Discuss -Bob Feller, Pitching Machines, December 15th, Free Agency, Bill Hamilton and Tommie AgeeDecember 15th Show Notes December 15, 1896 –THE PITCHING CANNON AT WORKIn 1896, Princeton University mathematics instructor Charles Hinton designed a gunpowder-powered baseball pitching machine for the Princeton University baseball team's batting practice. According to one source it caused several injuries and may have been partly responsible for Hinton's dismissal from Princeton that year. A demonstration was given in the school's gymnasium on December 15, 1896.Hinton died unexpectedly in 1907 from a cerebral hemorrhage and while he is mostly remembered for his work on the fourth dimension, in stark contrast, he is also credited with designing the first playground jungle gym. December 15, 1967 — The Mets obtain Tommy Agee, the 1966 Rookie of the Year, and utility infielder Al Weis from the White Sox in exchange for Buddy Booker, Tommy Davis, Jack Fisher, and Billy Wynne. New York's newest additions will both play a pivotal role in the team's 1969 World Championship season.December 15, 1974 — Oakland A's pitching star and Cy Young Award winner Catfish Hunter is declared a free agent. Arbitrator Peter Seitz rules that A's owner Charlie Finley committed a breach of contract by failing to make a payment to Hunter's life insurance fund. The four-time 20-game winner, who helped Oakland to World Championships in 1972, 1973 and 1974, will sign a five-year contract worth a record $3.75 million with the New York Yankees. The decision will usher in a new era in the owners' relationship with their players.Died: December 15, 2010 in Cleveland, OH. Blessed with a resilient arm and an overpowering fastball that frequently approached 100 miles per hour, Bob Feller was the most dominant pitcher of his era. Despite missing four full seasons during the peak of his career to join the war effort, Feller compiled 266 victories over the course of 18 big-league seasons, including three no-hitters and a record 12 one-hitters. Many people still feel that no one has ever thrown a baseball harder than the Cleveland Indian Hall of Famer.Robert William Andrew Feller was born on November 3, 1918 in the small midwestern town of Van Meter, Iowa. Growing up an Iowa farm boy during the 1920s, much of Feller's childhood consisted of performing household chores and playing baseball. Feller later credited milking cows, picking corn, and baling hay with strengthening his arms and giving him the capacity to throw as hard as he did. After pitching for...

Featured Musician: Nadim Azzam The Video: [After THE JUMP: Things said.]  --------------------- 1. MSU Preview: Offense starts at the top MSU goes as Aidan Chiles, which is in all directions. Some of those interceptions are freshman; some are just really not accurate. They're bringing him along in an interesting way, which is max protection and letting him look downfield. He has a threat in Nick Marsh who's really emerging in the back half of the season. Other targets are just dudes. OL has some big issues on the right side, look cobbled together. Alarming how well they were able to run the ball consistently against Iowa. Michigan needs to keep Chiles in the pocket. 2. MSU Preview: Defense starts at 19:01 They're weak at defensive tackle but cover it up with their burly LBs playing downhill. Other than play-action pass, what can we do Alex? Probably need to get creative. Consider beefing up if they have Hinton back and can run out multiple OTs, but Evan Link as 7th OL? You don't have the dudes who are going to win those matchups as much anymore. They do give up a big long run per week so many we'll have a Mullings beastquake again. Or maybe just once we'll get an Edwards vs Cal Haladay throw. 3. Illinois After Review starts at 34:30 Brian is NOT as mad at Kirk Campbell as he was before going over the film. There were a lot of good ideas in there that his quarterback just couldn't execute. Offensive line seems to be coming together—Gentry was actually *Good*. Priebe is rounding into a 2nd team all-B10 kind of player. Crippen eh but not terrible. Persi might just be what he is. Tuttle was BAD. The overturned interception was to a guy covering grass—it's not even *at* a receiver. Defensively, yeah, don't put them in a terrible situation. Barham had a great game, they covered a lot of the weird stuff that Bielema dumped on them, but were constantly starting drives at midfield or in Michigan territory. Dammit Wink things have largely disappeared save for 2-minute drills, where they're rushing high and playing soft man. 4. Hoops vs Oakland, and Toledo Preview starts at 59:56 Exhibition showed what we wanted to see, which was not many bad shots against a tricky zone defense. The ball didn't stick: when you can see all of these former PGs together they can all get a little creative. It's not going to be no-turnover but they get very good shots, including free throws.
