Rigged: The Massachusetts Drug Lab Scandal Podcast

Chris, Ilyas and Jamie discuss the biggest story no one has ever talked about with this case, chemists from Hinton, Amherst and the State Police Labs intentionally falsely classifying drugs to send people who they know to be innocent to jail. While we have touched upon this subject in previous episodes, we haven't gone over exactly what happened until now. There has never been an article on this subject and this is the first time that the state police's drug testing lab has been implacated in any wrong doing in the seemingly never ending drug lab scandal. As always this is breaking news and you will only find it here, on Rigged!

What to Know About Child Predators & Pedophiles in Churches (with Jimmy Hinton)

Wineskins Podcast

Jimmy Hinton is an expert in child sexual abuse. Several years ago he discovered his father had been molesting children in their church. His father was the preacher in that church. Jimmy did an amazing and courageous thing. He turned his father into the police and his father has been in prison every since. Jimmy did another remarkable thing - he took on the preaching role in the church where his father preached to bring healing to that congregation. It is an amazing story that will touch your heart. There is still more, though, Jimmy has made it his mission to protect children by understanding the mind of the predators so we can know what to look for and take precaution. Much of what he shares in this interview will surprise you. Pedophiles often molest kids in plain sight...they test and quickly identify their victims. I know that sounds hard to believe but it is true. You need to hear Jimmy explain how this happens and how they get away with it. Pedophiles train and practice and refine their approaches to get away with this for years and, on average, molest over 100 kids. Please be informed so we can do our best to protect our children from these sick and dangerous individuals who often occupy positions of great trust. We must be vigilant because the predators already are and they are going to keep trying to do what they do until they are stopped. Please go subscribe and like their podcast, and leave your hot takes about this game in the reviews. 1. Offense vs Nebraska starts at 1:00 Better in numbers than it felt. Sort of a Washington game but with dinky doo passing. The TE leak stuff was something they saw on film and kept working. McCarthy's arc read worked when they thought it was Cade, but they need a pop pass or something off of it because it's too obvious late. Had to use multiple guards—Stueber wrecked. Appreciation for the running backs—greatest hurdle of all time? McNamara deep accuracy, where'd you go? [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Defense vs Nebraska starts at 23:45 Nebraska is very good at college crappe, not very good at fundamental football. DTs have a very good day again, impressive that Mazi Smith could keep going after the opening screen. Jenkins had the 3rd down stuff. Hinton was great. They're not pass rushers however, which is still a step-up problem. Michigan had crappe as well, especially when Morris and Hawkins played that 4th and 2. 3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory starts at 47:15 Not a lot of weird decisions—both teams punted on 4th and 1 in their own territory. Special teams battle wasn't as big as we expected because of Michigan's punt returns: one flub, one ran backwards, one let bounce and lucky it went in the endzone. The rest was great: Robbins added distance to his Boom. MAAR blood in Moody. 4. Around the Big Ten, wsg Jamie Mac starts at 1:14:03 Iowa-Penn State changed when PSU didn't have a backup quarterback, which is very hard to do in 2021 when your Will Levis can just go start at Kentucky. PSU's defense is legit: Luketa is doing the Micah Parsons stuff, and their secondary is filled with stars. MSU-Rutgers you can watch the highlights because that's all there was. Wisconsin's best RB was booted from the program. Ohio State is shoveling coal again. Please go subscribe and like their podcast, and leave your hot takes about this game in the reviews. 1. Offense vs Wisconsin starts at 1:00 Long discussion about Cade: were the bad passes on him or the receivers? Little bit of both but we disagree on the degrees. McCarthy can run options however, which seems like an important thing. No more split zone in short situations: you're asking for impossible blocks. Tight ends got Wisconsinized. Hello Roman Wilson (don't step out). [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Defense vs Wisconsin starts at 22:45 How Wisconsin was this? Quarterbackly: no. Wolf had two turnovers when he came in—similar to when Michigan lost Peters and fell apart here years ago. The front seven however! The DTs withstood some Wisconsin linemen. Ojabo had a GAME. Dax Hill had a game. Hinton and Smith and the young DTs with them looked pretty good. The interesting blitzes are an effect of running more zone. 3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory starts at 39:42 Seth reads off every 4th down decision and Brian says whether he would go or not go on that one. Really there was just one we thought they got too conservative. The pooch was a bad idea—20 yards in that circumstance is worth way more than 2 seconds. Special teams was a huge difference, e.g. punt from the 17, get it back on the 40. Moody hits all three. 4. Around the Big Ten, wsg Jamie Mac starts at 56:22 Western Kentucky could have hung with MSU if they didn't just kick field goals. Indiana broke Penix as well as everything else. Ohio State did to Rutgers all the things we were clamoring to do to Rutgers. Nebraska did terrible things to Northwestern, with a walk-on running back.  MUSIC: “Marigold”—Jelani Aryeh “Wet Leg”—Chaise Lounge “Future Me Hates Me”—The Beths “Across 110th Street”

"The Outsiders" -- both the well-known coming-of-age novel by S.E. Hinton and the likewise-titled 1983 film by Francis Ford Coppola -- certainly looms large in the cultural history of this community. On today's edition of StudioTulsa, we meet the California-based, Oklahoma-born grade school librarian who, back in 1980, encouraged her students to create a petition asking Coppola to make the film. Yes, this is really how "The Outsiders" got on the path from beloved young-adult book to cult-classic movie. That librarian is Jo Ellen Misakian. We're also joined today by the rap/hip-hop artist Danny Boy O'Connor, who owns and operates the Outsiders House Museum (established in 2017). Both will take part in a series of events and screenings coming soon to Tulsa that will center upon the motion-picture debut of a 4K restoration of "The Outsiders: The Complete Novel" (i.e., the revised and re-edited version of Coppola's film, which first appeared in 2005).

She eventually married her love of running and all things Disney and tackled a number of runDisney runs. This is where she met Jen. Jen began running during her weight loss journey half a dozen years ago. She previously only ran from base to base as a varsity softball player and loathed running. But thanks to her friends and a supportive network, she ran her first 5K. Based on the novel by S.E. Hinton, TEX is a thoughtful coming-of-age story about a wayward and wild teenage boy learning to think of people other than himself, and learning to be ok with saying goodbye to friends and family as they inevitably leave their small, rural Oklahoma town - even if he has to stay. If that seems a little too mature and grounded for Disney, just remember that the 1980s were a strange time for the company. One that we look back fondly at as we finish up the decade with this week's episode.

This episode was supposed to be recorded at Prentice 4M, on the other end of The Bridge, started by a couple of readers to have the perfect, affordable, safe, and clean living/renting/working space near campus. 1. Offense vs WMU starts at 1:00 Do we start with the good news (they can run), the bad news (Bell), or the future news (McCarthy). #SpeedInSpace is over—there were no reads and lots of fake reads that burned downs or delivered safeties and linebackers to the running backs immediately. In this game at least the RBs could put those defenders on their asses. JJ seems to be erratic. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Defense vs WMU starts at 28:58 One drive of bleeding plus a Not Angry About That throw over Gemon Green (and a taunting on Ojabo) and then not much. Just a few gashes from LBs getting out of position. Hinton looked like their best DT, Hutchinson got to spend a lot of time on the sideline while they rotated a lot of guys. Mike Morris, hello there. Secondary looked okay but shaky—they're better as a zone team. 3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory starts at 44:45 The hot takes are half the segment even though there was a lot of special teams, because the only game theory stuff was at the end of the 1st half (learn to manage a clock!). Much of the game was spent waiting around for Brad Robbins punts to land. Using Bell as a returner. Foug'ing it. 4. Around the Big Ten, wsg Jamie Mac starts at 1:00:35 We go long this time of year because there are so many games. Jamie does not recognize the existence of Iowa. 1983's The Outsiders is Francis Ford Coppola's film adaptation of the young adult classic by S.E. Hinton and despite an ensemble cast of 80s heartthrobs, The Sweeties had never seen it! Starring nearly every famous movie star guy 20 and under (okay sorry Pat Swayze was 29, old fogie!), The Outsiders delves into the white class divide in 1950s Oklahoma and what's it's like to have to grow up too fast because you're poor AND if you're Dad thought it would be fun to name you Ponyboy. Tough break kid, tough break. Fun fact there are actually two versions of this movie floating around - the original from 1983 and then the updated "novel" version in which Francis Ford Coppola was bullied by his granddaughter to reinstate many scenes cut from the original and that were integral to the book version.  We talk about both movies but also try to unravel the paradox of tough guys who like wrestle each other and cry a lot, whether Ponyboy looks better as a blonde or brunette, and how Tom Cruise's Steve is the most annoying character ever.

Director Matt Hinton's documentary, Parallel Love: The Story of a Band Called Luxury, has a couple of very interesting wrinkles. Not only is the Georgia post-punk band an act you've likely not heard of, the reunited act now features three members who are Eastern Orthodox priests, and director Hinton is part of the band, as well. That's before you get into the fact that Luxury is an often-forgotten part of the early history of Christian label Tooth & Nail Records, or the terrible accident which almost ended the lives of the band members. It's a fascinating story, filled with music you're sure to wish you'd heard when you were in your teens, as it's so richly-layered and evocative, so it was with some excitement that I hopped on Zoom with director Hinton (who now also plays guitar for Luxury) to talk about all of this and more.

Sunni and Lisa are joined by Yale Historian Elizabeth Hinton to discuss  new book  AMERICA ON FIRE: The Untold History of Police Violence and Black Rebellion Since the 1960s Book description:What began in spring 2020 as local protests in response to the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police quickly exploded into a massive nationwide movement. Millions of mostly young people defiantly flooded into the nation's streets, demanding an end to police brutality and to the broader, systemic repression of Black people and other people of color. To many observers, the protests appeared to be without precedent in their scale and persistence. Yet, as the acclaimed historian Elizabeth Hinton demonstrates in America on Fire, the events of 2020 had clear precursors—and any attempt to understand our current crisis requires a reckoning with the recent past.Even in the aftermath of Donald Trump, many Americans consider the decades since the civil rights movement in the mid-1960s as a story of progress toward greater inclusiveness and equality. Hinton's sweeping narrative uncovers an altogether different history, taking us on a troubling journey from Detroit in 1967 and Miami in 1980 to Los Angeles in 1992 and beyond to chart the persistence of structural racism and one of its primary consequences, the so-called urban riot. Hinton offers a critical corrective: the word riot was nothing less than a racist trope applied to events that can only be properly understood as rebellions—explosions of collective resistance to an unequal and violent order. As she suggests, if rebellion and the conditions that precipitated it never disappeared, the optimistic story of a post–Jim Crow United States no longer holds.Black rebellion, America on Fire powerfully illustrates, was born in response to poverty and exclusion, but most immediately in reaction to police violence. In 1968, President Lyndon Johnson launched the “War on Crime,” sending militarized police forces into impoverished Black neighborhoods. Facing increasing surveillance and brutality, residents threw rocks and Molotov cocktails at officers, plundered local businesses, and vandalized exploitative institutions. Hinton draws on exclusive sources to uncover a previously hidden geography of violence in smaller American cities, from York, Pennsylvania, to Cairo, Illinois, to Stockton, California. The central lesson from these eruptions—that police violence invariably leads to community violence—continues to escape policymakers, who respond by further criminalizing entire groups instead of addressing underlying socioeconomic causes. The results are the hugely expanded policing and prison regimes that shape the lives of so many Americans today. Presenting a new framework for understanding our nation's enduring strife, America on Fire is also a warning: rebellions will surely continue unless police are no longer called on to manage the consequences of dismal conditions beyond their control, and until an oppressive system is finally remade on the principles of justice and equality.

What does speaking the truth to our neighbors mean when we respond to our faith and participate in mission work in our community? We will also reflect on speaking the truth to our neighbors as it relates to disaster response.

Denver turned their sights on Hinton, who is currently listed as a wide receiver for the squad. The 23-year-old played quarterback during his freshman year at Wake Forest, but needless to say, this was not his preferred role as he talks about with us in the podcast. A paper in the Journal of American Medical Association examines an early warning system for sepsis, and finds that it misses out on most instances (67%) of cases, and frequently issued false alarms (to which the developer contests the results). A new bill, the Consumer Safety Technology Act, directs the US Consumer Product Safety Commission to run a pilot program to use AI to help in safety inspections. A survey from FICO on The State of Responsible AI (2021) shows, among other things, a disinterest in the ethical and responsible use of AI among business leaders (with 65% of companies saying that can't explain how specific AI model predictions are made, and 22% of companies have an AI ethics board to consider questions on AI ethics and fairness). In a similar vein, a survey from the Pew Research Center and Elon University's Imagining the Internet Center found that 68% of respondents (from across 602 leaders in the AI field) believe that AI ethical principles will NOT be employed by most AI systems within the next decade; the survey includes a summary of the respondents' worries and hopes, as well as some additional commentary. She investigates an overlooked trend of Black uprisings emanating from poor and working-class Black neighborhoods, towns, and cities often sparked by police terror between 1964 and 1972. In refuting the racist pathologies that community violence in response to racist policing and economic disinvestment has been assigned by commissions, politicians, liberals and conservatives alike, Hinton presents a redefinition through the analytic of rebellion that enhances our understanding of resistance to anti-Blackness and policing today. If many people were shocked by Donald Trump's 2016 election, many more were stunned when, months later, white supremacists took to the streets of Charlottesville, Virginia, chanting “Blood and Soil” and “Jews will not replace us!” Like Trump, the Charlottesville marchers were dismissed as aberrations—crazed extremists who did not represent the real US.  It Can Happen Here: White Power and the Rising Threat of Genocide in the US (NYU Press, 2021) demonstrates that, rather than being exceptional, such white power extremism and the violent atrocities linked to it are a part of American history. And, alarmingly, they remain a very real threat to the US today. Hinton explains how murky politics, structural racism, the promotion of American exceptionalism, and a belief that the US has have achieved a color-blind society have diverted attention from the deep roots of white supremacist violence in the US's brutal past. Drawing on his years of research and teaching on mass violence, Hinton details the warning signs of impending genocide and atrocity crimes, the tools used by ideologues to fan the flames of hate, and the shocking ways in which “us” versus “them” violence is supported by inherently racist institutions and policies. It Can Happen Here is an essential new assessment of the dangers of contemporary white power extremism in the United States. While revealing the threat of genocide and atrocity crimes that loom over the country, Hinton offers actions we can take to prevent it from happening, illuminating a hopeful path forward for a nation in crisis. On this week’s podcast, Korelitz says that Jake’s more general anxieties about his career as a writer are relatable, despite her own success (this is her seventh novel).“Jake is all of us,” Korelitz says. “I used to regard other people’s literary careers with great curiosity. I used to have this little private parlor game: Would I want that person’s career? Would I want that person’s career? And those names have changed over the years as careers have faltered, disappeared. I’ve been publishing for a very long time, and my contemporaries in the 1990s were people with massive successes who have not been heard of now for 10, 15 years. So it’s very much a tortoise and hare kind of thing, in my own case.”Elizabeth Hinton visits the podcast to discuss her new book, “America on Fire,” a history of racial protest and police violence that reframes the civil rights struggle between the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968 and the widespread demonstrations after the murder of George Floyd in 2020. Hinton writes about major uprisings, but also focuses on lesser-known examples of systemic violence against Black communities in places like York, Pa., and Cairo, Ill.“Part of the reason why the violence in both of those cities was so extreme was the deep entanglement between white vigilante groups and white power groups and the police department and political and economic elites in both cities,” Hinton says. “So in many ways, what happened, in Cairo especially, is a warning to all of us about what the consequences are when officials decide to use the police to manage the material consequences of socioeconomic exclusion and poverty.”Also on this week’s episode, Elizabeth Harris has news from the publishing world; Tina Jordan looks back at Book Review history as it celebrates its 125th anniversary this year; and Gregory Cowles and John Williams talk about what they’ve been reading. Pamela Paul is the host. Here are the books discussed in this week’s “What We’re Reading”:“Dispatches” by Michael Herr“The Emigrants” by W.G. Sebald“Lenin” by Victor Sebestyen

How do we reduce crime, especially amid calls to defund the police? While many point to rising crime rates as an indicator that more funding is needed, studies show almost no link between crime and money spent. So what’s the answer? “We know what’s required,” said Elizabeth Hinton, a professor of history and African American studies at Yale University and author of the new book “America on Fire: The Untold History of Police Violence and Black Rebellion Since the 1960s.” On today’s show, Hinton walks us through some of the decisions that have led to the current moment, past attempts to find a solution and things to consider in conversations around police funding as we move forward. “When people are talking about defund the police or calling for defund the police, they’re saying we want a different set of investments of our taxpayer dollars into communities.” Later on, we’ll hear from a listener who gives us insight into one of Molly’s favorite songs. Plus, an answer to the Make Me Smart Question. Here’s everything we talked about on the show today: Read Hinton’s essay on police violence in The New York Times “Cities Say They Want to Defund the Police. Their Budgets Say Otherwise.” from Bloomberg “A Year After George Floyd: Pressure to Add Police Amid Rising Crime” from The New York Times “More cops. Is it the answer to fighting crime?” from USA Today Plus, more music breakdowns! Cheers to making it through this year!
