Creating out of the Dark: Artists and Mental Health (Joe Sutphin, Bailey McGee, Gina Sutphin, Jamin Still, Kyra Hinton) Some artists thrive in the midst of trouble, creating powerful, emotionally-driven works. But to others, the darkness stifles creativity, leaving them in a state of artistic limbo. In this session, five artists will talk together about the struggles and triumphs of making something new even when the dark is all you can see. Over the course of the discussion, art will be made, then lost to the dark. Together, the group will navigate where to go from there.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

AI Godfather Geoffrey Hinton warns that We're Creating 'Alien Beings that "Could Take Over"

So will AI wipe us out? According to Geoffrey Hinton, the 2024 Nobel laureate in physics, there's about a 10-20% chance of AI being humanity's final invention. Which, as the so-called Godfather of AI acknowledges, is his way of saying he has no more idea than you or I about its species-killing qualities. That said, Hinton is deeply concerned about some of the consequences of an AI revolution that he pioneered at Google. From cyber attacks that could topple major banks to AI-designed viruses, from mass unemployment to lethal autonomous weapons, Hinton warns we're facing unprecedented risks from technology that's evolving faster than our ability to control it. So does he regret his role in the invention of generative AI? Not exactly. Hinton believes the AI revolution was inevitable—if he hadn't contributed, it would have been delayed by perhaps a week. Instead of dwelling on regret, he's focused on finding solutions for humanity to coexist with superintelligent beings. His radical proposal? Creating "AI mothers" with strong maternal instincts toward humans—the only model we have for a more powerful being designed to care for a weaker one.1. Nobody Really Knows the Risk Level Hinton's 10-20% extinction probability is essentially an admission of complete uncertainty. As he puts it, "the number means nobody's got a clue what's going to happen" - but it's definitely more than 1% and less than 99%.2. Short-Term vs. Long-Term Threats Are Fundamentally Different Near-term risks involve bad actors misusing AI (cyber attacks, bioweapons, surveillance), while the existential threat comes from AI simply outgrowing its need for humans - something we've never faced before.3. We're Creating "Alien Beings" Right Now Unlike previous technologies, AI represents actual intelligent entities that can understand, plan, and potentially manipulate us. Hinton argues we should be as concerned as if we spotted an alien invasion fleet through a telescope.4. The "AI Mothers" Solution Hinton's radical proposal: instead of trying to keep AI submissive (which won't work when it's smarter than us), we should engineer strong maternal instincts into AI systems - the only model we have of powerful beings caring for weaker ones.5. Superintelligence Is Coming Within 5-20 Years Most leading experts believe human-level AI is inevitable, followed quickly by superintelligence. Hinton's timeline reflects the consensus among researchers, despite the wide range.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. Title: A Life Worth FollowingSermon Take-Home NotesGod is With Us – John Wesley's final words, “The best of all is, God is with us,” are a reminder that God's presence is constant—in joy, trials, weakness, and weariness.Paul's Farewell – In Acts 20:17-35, Paul's final words to the Ephesian elders reveal his deepest priority: not comfort, reputation, or legacy, but faithfulness to the gospel and finishing the race God gave him.Imitating Christ – Faith grows through imitation. Paul followed Christ so closely that others could follow him. We are shaped by those who walk in the way of Jesus, and we shape others as they watch us.People Are Watching – Our presence, words, and actions—especially in difficult moments—form the faith of those around us. Even small acts of kindness, patience, and love can have lasting impact. The Power of the Holy Spirit – We cannot live this life of imitation in our own strength. The same Spirit that empowered Paul and the early church empowers us today to live with grace, courage, and truth. The Upside-Down Way of Jesus – True life is found in pouring ourselves out in love, not in self-protection. “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” In losing ourselves for the sake of Christ, we are filled.Faithfulness is Communal – Spiritual formation is not just personal—it's something we practice together, encouraging one another toward love and good deeds.Your Life Matters – Whether or not you feel influential, you are shaping the faith of others. Live in such a way that your life points not to your own strength, but to God's grace.Reflection Questions:Who are you imitating?Who is imitating you?How can you live more intentionally so that your life points others to Christ?

Widow of Slain Ohio Deputy Sues Alleged Killer's Family Over Fundraisers The widow of a retired Ohio sheriff's deputy has filed a civil lawsuit against the family of the man accused of killing her husband, accusing them of profiting off his alleged crime through online fundraisers. Rodney Hinton Jr., 38, is currently in the Clermont County Jail, charged with aggravated murder for the May 2, 2024 death of Larry Henderson, a 57-year-old retired Hamilton County Sheriff's deputy who was working a special duty traffic detail during the University of Cincinnati's commencement ceremonies. Authorities say that Hinton deliberately accelerated his silver Ford Focus and struck Henderson from behind while he was directing traffic at the intersection of Jefferson and Corry Streets near the university's Fifth Third Arena. Surveillance footage reportedly shows Hinton turning around after initially driving past Henderson, circling back, and intentionally aiming the vehicle at the deputy. Henderson was thrown several feet and suffered fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to a hospital. Police say the attack appeared to be motivated by rage and grief, as just one day earlier, Hinton's 26-year-old son, Ryan Hinton, was shot and killed by Cincinnati police officers during an altercation. According to the Cincinnati Police Department, Ryan Hinton was involved in a domestic violence situation and allegedly charged at officers with a knife before being fatally shot. Body camera footage was shown to Rodney Hinton shortly after the incident, and his defense attorney has since claimed that seeing the video triggered a psychotic break. Prosecutors, however, allege that Hinton acted with intent, describing the incident as a targeted and deliberate attack on law enforcement. They charged him with aggravated murder, felonious assault, and vehicular homicide. At his arraignment, prosecutors noted the calculated nature of the attack and emphasized that Henderson had no connection to the officer who shot Ryan Hinton. Following Hinton's arrest, members of his family created crowdfunding campaigns on platforms including GoFundMe and GiveSendGo to raise money for legal expenses and family support. These fundraisers were met with swift backlash from law enforcement organizations and political officials, who condemned them as an exploitation of a tragic crime. Both platforms ultimately removed the campaigns after public outcry. On July 14, 2025, Henderson's widow filed a wrongful death lawsuit in Clermont County Common Pleas Court against Rodney Hinton and several of his family members. The lawsuit, claims that the fundraisers amassed over $100,000 and that the family capitalized on Hinton's "public status and notoriety gained solely through his criminal act of killing Deputy Henderson." Widow of Slain Ohio Deputy Sues Alleged Killer's Family Over Fundraisers The widow of a retired Ohio sheriff's deputy has filed a civil lawsuit against the family of the man accused of killing her husband, accusing them of profiting off his alleged crime through online fundraisers. The lawsuit, claims that the fundraisers amassed over $100,000 and that the family capitalized on Hinton's "public status and notoriety gained solely through his criminal act of killing Deputy Henderson." We close out #JuneBOOM with 1981's FIRECRACKER, advertised by New World to be "the first erotic martial arts thriller." How true is this statement? And is the film erotic enough in the way that middle aged folks would like? We examine with the help of Get Me Another Podcast co-host Chris Iannacone, who also watched New World's TNT JACKSON, a movie that has the exact same plot and was also directed by Cirio Santiago. How much does lead Jillian Kesner know about the martial arts? We get into it in our first research rumble! We also discuss the difficulties of running a small business, even if that business is the drug trade! And we had to discuss the incredible jackets worn by actor Darby Hinton, and we give it the respect it deserves! Hinton also appeared in another New World movie, BLACK OAK CONSPIRACY, but do any of us remember it?  More importantly, will Jillian Kesner ever remember to try and find her sister? After all, that is why she travels to the Philippines in the movie and ends up in a battle to the death! Isn't it? Plus, with over 40 years of reviews, what did AI think of it? And is it, gulp, right? Enjoy this trip back to New World's early action days, and find out if you're tough enough for all that erotic fighting! Former cop Eric Tansey examines the body cam footage in the case of Rodney Hinton, an Ohio man accused of executing a calculated act of revenge: the killing of a Hamilton County sheriff's deputy, Larry Henderson. As we unpack the events leading to the tragedy, we explore the emotional toll of unresolved grief, systemic tension between law enforcement and the communities they serve, and the line between justice and vengeance.
