There are language teachers who make inspiring and educational content, and Christian Saunders from Canguro English is one of them. Christian is my favorite English teacher on YouTube, not least because we share the same teaching philosophy. His YouTube channel has over 300,000 subscribers and Christian uses it to "change the way the world learns English". He's always told his learners the truth: learning a language is hard and it takes many years. I agree. Let me add that learning a second language is one of the most rewarding things you could ever do in your life. In this episode, which is part 1 of the conversation I had with him, Christian and I talk about: what language is how Christian became an English teacher whether or not the language skills of a teacher matter what's wrong with the way languages are taught what Christian thinks of language levels (A1, A2, etc.) why Christian decided to become a YouTuber Any comments? I made this video because I like talking about English language learning and I have ideas about what works best when you are learning English. Mostly I believe that you get good at what you practice when you are learning English. In all truth though, I think Christian from Canguro English does a better job of explaining it so go and watch his video instead: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhlAG...I think his English lesson will help you understand a bit more about the journey of language learning. (I recommend to watch the interview on YouTube) After our first interview back in October 2020 with Gabriel, we want to know what has happened in the meantime on Masters of English (MAOFEN). -- Check out the first interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRmKz_KyiiA MAOFEN is a group made off learners,.They are trying to help other learners. This is not a group of teachers or native English speakers trying to tell you what you need to study. It's just the learners and they focus on topics that they want to share or discuss together. Something they have learned or something they have found out and they share it. What can be more collaborative than that?!?!?! Up to minute 38:48 the focus is on the MAOFEN group. From 38:48 on, we tackle Gabriel's language learning. ------------------------- Time Stamps: 00:59 Did the members of the MAOFEN become family? 03:15 The "Rollercoaster" - About kicking out members and changing that approach thanks to Stephen Krashen and "his" input based learning. 05:48 Why do inactive members of the facebook group not participate in any activities? 07:37 Why having hosts is crucial for the project. 09:06 What the MAOFEN group is all about. 09:48 Hosts can learn from leading the Zoom sessions as well and grow as a person. 10:54 The Facebook Group is increasing drastically (Today more than 500 members) 11:47 "Mother Theresa" - The real goal for the MAOFEN as a collaborative project. 13:30 Daniel's tips on how MAOFEN could grow / reach more potential members 15:16 Why Gabriel stopped giving lessons to MAOFEN members. Why he doesn't think it is a good idea to rely too much on a teacher. 17:22 The Ripple Effect - How Christian Saunders from Canguro English struck a chord with Gabriel and more 21:17 MAOFEN's birthday / MAOFEN Magazine 23:52 Book club (Accoubtability reader's group) A side project lead by a MAOFEN member 26:25 "50 words" challenge 27:00 "Chain reaction" - an activity which means interviewing other members 30:30 About the Zoom meetings (is actually the core activities of the group) 36:45 Where can we find the MAOFEN group? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 38:48 Start Gabriel's language learning (Filipino/Arabic) 40:22 The language ressources Gabriel uses. In this episode I explain the myth of business English and how it is related to phrasal verbs. I give a few examples (taken from the popular business English book, Market Leader, there are thousands of phrasal verbs you could use for business.) The examples: 1. Let's get down to business (start and focus) 2. Could you hang on a moment please? (wait) 3. Perhaps we could get back to the point. (return) 4. Ok, let's go over what we've agreed. (review) 5. Right, to sum up then…(summarize) 6. I think we should move on now… (leave this point and continue) 7. Can we come back to that later? For this week, I am reacting to Pasquale Cangiano, one of the administrators of the Facebook group Canguro English. He's a 47-year-old Italian man who has many things to say about learning English. The best part is that he's not an English teacher, but he has come to the same conclusion as many English teachers: learning a language is about how much you enjoy the process. The whole conversation between Pasquale and Christian Saunders, the founder of Canguro English, is almost 40 minutes long, but I've chosen this short extract, not only to raise awareness on what English learners should focus on but as a way to introduce two concepts that I believe are essential to becoming an independent learner, and they are Repair Strategies (Discourse) and Binomial pairs (Vocabulary). Remember to share this episode with whoever you think might find it useful. Also, subscribe to my podcast wherever you find it available and leave a comment/rating if your podcast provider allows you to do it. I wouldn't be doing it if it wasn't for you, my listeners. 686. Christian from Canguro English A conversation with YouTube English teacher Christian Saunders from Canguro English about the realities of learning and teaching English, motivation and goal-setting in language learning, Paul McCartney recording an album in his kitchen and plenty more. This time, I'm using two recordings from the fantastic Facebook group Canguro English. Just like in Masters of English, learners from around the world connect and help each other, and most of the time with the guidance of the administrators of the group, to improve their English. The two people I have today are Juan Aguilar, who expressed his desire to be more fluent and Mike Pinargote, a 24-real-old man from Ecuador, who showed great courage to upload his first video speaking in English. Both learners showed good control of basic grammatical structures, although Mike needed some extra comments to improve his use of grammar. However, they managed to express their ideas with great care to use intonation appropriately to convey their feelings. In terms of discourse, they are both on the right track to success. So, Juan and Mike... kudos to you both! Remember to subscribe to my podcast, either here on Anchor, or any other podcast service where my show is available. To see the full list, check the Anchor website. And if your podcast service allows for ratings or comments, please do it! It'd make me very happy! In this episode, I chat with Christian Saunders from Canguro English about language teaching methods, including: - Some obscure methods from the 19th century, - Superstitious pigeons (no, really), - The problem with testing and why we should burn the exams, - Whether Dogme is a problem without a solution, - What we can learn from the ancient Greeks, ... and much, much more. I really enjoyed this chat, and I hope you do, too.
