My "31 ways to improve your English" challenge is back again and we'll be starting on 1st January 2025!I don't believe that the beginning of a new year is the best time to start new things or bring about change! Curious about the quirks of British education? In this episode of English and Beyond, César and I dig into the world of single-sex education—those schools where boys and girls are kept apart in the name of better grades, fewer distractions, and old traditions.I reflect on my years teaching in a boys' school and the surprising behaviours I observed, while César compares it to his own experience in mixed Spanish schools. Together, we explore the pros, the cons, and whether single-sex education is just a ‘charming', British relic or still holds some educational value today. From classroom dynamics to bigger debates about gender, stereotypes, and society, it's a lighthearted but thoughtful discussion that may have you questioning your own take on education. Tune in for a balanced mix of honesty, humour, and hopefully a touch of charm! For a full transcript and additional learning resources, check out our website at the following link: morethanalanguage.com

In today's English lesson, you are going to be learning English in the world's largest urban rainforest. And maybe the first term we should talk about is urban. Urban means like the city. The difference is rural. Rural means out in the country, like kind of where we are right now, or at least it looks like that. But we are still in the city of Rio. This is the world's largest urban rainforest, which means we are still technically inside a city. It's about 13 square miles wide, and we took an Uber to get here. I'll show you a little of that footage in just a minute so you can see what urban looks like. Before we talk too much about the rainforest here, let me take you back to Rio as we were leaving this morning. It was definitely rush hour.
