So many of us have been burned, bored, or hurt by the church. If not, then we likely know someone who has. But a hurtful church experience doesn't have to mean the end of a relationship with God. In this episode, we talk to author and pastor Rev. Carol Howard Merritt about her own complicated journey with the church, her work with those with spiritual wounds, and how many have found healing and connection with God on the other side.
Pastor and Author Carol Howard Merritt talks about what religious trauma is and how theology and structures can perpetuate harm against our most vulnerable.
This month, Talking About It series host Cindy Graziano talks about overcoming childhood trauma and building healthy relationships with Rev. Carol Howard Merritt, author of Healing Spiritual Wounds and Interim Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan.“Many times children act out because they’re not able to tell their story. They don’t have the language for it. If we’re able to make a space or really listen to a child experiencing trauma, then we can begin the healing process.”For resources discussed on this podcast, visit our website: www.talkingaboutit.org/resources
Friends, this week we sit down with Carol Howard Merritt to talk to her about her book "Spiritual Wounds". And since we're in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic we also talk about how some Christian's insistence that the virus is a result of God's anger and wrath has the destructive power to wound people who are in a fragile state of mind. I have recently returned from a month long travel in the United States, so while I’m catching up with work, I invited my friend, Carol Howard Merritt, to join me in a more casual, shoot-the- breeze conversation about my time back in the States, specifically attending Rachel Held Evans’ funeral, appearing on a Fox News radio show, and Carol shares her thoughts about empty nesting in a feeble attempt to make this episode vaguely about parenting, haha. Carol Howard Merritt is the pastor of First Presbyterian Church (USA) in Spring City, Tennessee, and author of Healing Spiritual Wounds: Reconnecting with a Loving God after Experiencing a Hurtful Church. In this broad ranging discussion, Carol and I looked at how the church has often held up patriarchy and shamed victims of abuse, how forgiveness is a process that takes time, what love looks like amid rampant economic injustice, and how God offers rivers of healing and restoration to each one of us.Resources:Healing Spiritual Wounds, by Carol Howard MerrittSupport the show at patreon.com/jonathanpuddle

In this interview we talk about faith and church and how to heal from painful wounds.
Important to Parenting Forward is the practice of parenting ourselves, specifically, to name our past wounds and engage in the work of healing. Breaking cycles of pain and shame means dealing with our own childhood trauma first. In this show, I invite author, speaker, and pastor, Carol Howard Merritt, who wrote the book, Healing Spiritual Wounds, to address how we might move through our spiritual wounds to give our kids the best chance of healthy spirituality. We talk about how to form a healthy image of God, how evangelism violates a child’s spiritual autonomy, how we can shape our child’s perception of emotions and their body. Carol is insightful and pastoral. You will love her voice. Enjoy the show! Who says there's no such thing as providence? You certainly won't hear it from us. Our episode today is the result of the appearance of a small package on Joe's doorstep. Carol Howard Merritt is an author, speaker, and minister who grew up in a white evangelical church and with an unpredictable and sometimes violent father. These experiences shaped her view of a punitive, judgmental God. She writes from personal experience and as professional minister about spiritual wounds inflicted by the church and how people can heal from them in her latest book. In Healing Spiritual Wounds: Reconnecting with a Loving God After Experiencing a Hurtful Church, she discusses her experience and that of others who have been spiritually abused by authoritarianism, patriarchy, and negative self-image propagated by a fundamentalist religion. She devotes each chapter to specific wounds with exercises as to how healing can happen. She has written several books on the church with a special focus on the needs of younger generations. She was previously on Progressive Spirit when we discussed Reframing Hope: Vital Ministry in a New Generation. Carol hosts God Complex Radio and is a regular contributor to the Christian Century, the Huffington Post and she blogs at Tribal Church. Carol and I are both Presbyterian Church (USA) ministers and it is a pleasure to introduce her compassionate and honest work to my listeners. This is the second in my series of interviews with holy, healing, spiritually disobedient, creative, and awakened women.
