In this homily, Fr. Michael reflects on the Transfiguration and the meaning of “glory” as Christ reveals it—a glory that comes through love and self-gift. He shares how glory is not worldly success, but the radiance of a life given in love, like Christ on the Cross. Fr. Michael draws on personal experience to show how embracing responsibility, whether in priesthood, marriage, or family life, deepens joy and enlarges the heart. Like Christ on the mountain, we too are called to shine with the glory of love by carrying the responsibilities God gives us. This is the path of the Cross and the Resurrection.

Join Joe Rockey and Father Boniface Hicks in this heartfelt and thought-provoking episode of Father and Joe. Together, they explore the complexities of discipleship, the power of love, and the challenges of living a faith-filled life in today's world. Using the Gospel message from the third week of Advent as a starting point, they reflect on the historical context of Jesus' time and its relevance to our modern struggles, while emphasizing how love remains the most transformative and powerful force.Joe begins by sharing his personal struggle with excuses and reflects on the Gospel passage where John the Baptist foreshadows Jesus' transformative mission: "I baptize you with water, but He will baptize you with fire and the Holy Spirit." This sparks a deep discussion about what it means to be a disciple, especially during difficult times. Joe asks an important question: "If we were living in Jesus' time, would it have been easy to be a disciple, or would we have hesitated because of the challenges and sacrifices required?"Father Boniface delves into the historical context, explaining how the Roman Empire's oppression and societal challenges might have made Jesus' message difficult to embrace. He contrasts worldly power with God's power of love: "The power that God brings is not the power that the world prizes...but the power of sacrificial love." Using examples from Scripture and theology, he explains how Jesus' approach to love upends the values of worldly power, showing that true victory lies in love, not domination. The conversation also touches on the challenges of modern discipleship, as Joe reflects on the divided responses to struggles like the COVID pandemic: “Do we quietly accept the circumstances, violently oppose them, or join the side of the oppressors?” Father Boniface emphasizes that, no matter the circumstances, love must remain central. He explains, "Love never runs out. God, who is love, comes not in the form of worldly powers but in the form of sacrificial love."As Christmas approaches, the episode shifts to an invitation for those who may only attend church twice a year (on Christmas and Easter). Father Boniface encourages listeners to welcome and support others in their journey of faith: "Let them feel like Christ cares that they're there because you care that they're there." Whether it's through a simple connection, a prayer, or a welcoming gesture, discipleship begins with embodying love in everyday actions. In a world where power, money, and status often feel like the only ways to thrive, this episode of Father and Joe reminds us that love—God's greatest gift—offers a more fulfilling and eternal path. As Father Boniface puts it, “God rearranges the hierarchy of values to show that love is the most powerful, love is the top, love is victorious.”If you're seeking inspiration on how to deepen your faith, love others, and embrace discipleship in your own life, this episode offers profound insights and practical encouragement. As the hosts remind us, "The prerequisite of discipleship is love."faith and discipleship, Catholic podcast, Christian living, power of love, Advent reflections, Christmas message, Father and Joe, Father Boniface Hicks, Joe Rockey, Gospel reflection, John the Baptist, Jesus and love, embracing discipleship, being a disciple, Roman Empire and faith, Eucharistic reflections, Brant Pitre Jesus studies, overcoming oppression with love, sacrifice and love, love vs power, Beatitudes explained, modern Christian struggles, faith and challenges, love in Christianity, discipleship in history, Christmas faith reflection, Catholic inspiration, challenges of faith, how to deepen faith, love as the greatest power, historical context of Jesus, welcoming others to church, Catholic Christmas reflection, sacrificial love in action
Family is one of the most fundamental aspects of human existence. From birth forward, we're often indoctrinated to embrace the values and priorities prized by our parents and caregivers. In many foundational arenas—from religious and spiritual beliefs to social and political norms—our families and intergenerational patterns have a profound influence on our lives. Yet, from Dr. Carla's personal and professional experience, she's found that our beliefs and needs often change as we mature and explore who we are as individuals. Ideally, those we love choose to support and honor our chosen personal identities and belief systems, but, sadly, many families are torn apart as differences arise. It seems that love cannot always conquer all. Join Dr. Carla and expert Lyn Smith Gregory for a captivating exploration into the heart of family estrangement, individuation, and healthy connection. Topics discussed include boundaries, rebuilding relationships, divorce, estrangement, healthy communication, emotional intelligence, spiritual and religious transitions, trauma, political differences, gender identity, sexual orientation, and individuation. Please note that this episode contains sensitive material; listener discretion is advised. Experiencing divorce, navigating its aftermath, and opening up to the possibility of love again—these steps carry a profound significance for men, often requiring them to face emotions they've long buried. It's more than just rebuilding; it's about redefining who they are as individuals and as partners. For many men, the journey to healing involves embracing vulnerability, overcoming fears of repeating past mistakes, and rebuilding trust in themselves and others. This transformation is essential for establishing genuine connections and rediscovering love. The end of a marriage can trigger intense feelings of shame, failure, and deep grief. Societal expectations frequently pressure men to suppress these emotions, leading them to face their pain in silence and sometimes adopt unhealthy or isolating coping mechanisms. We often overlook that men are dealing with more than just a loss of family structure and limited access to their children; they're also facing a fractured sense of identity and, for some, the fear of entering a new marriage in the future.
