Psalm 42: 1 – 5, says this:1 As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? 3 My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me all day long, “Where is your God?” 4 These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God under the protection of the Mighty One with shouts of joy and praise among the festive throng. 5 Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God (Psalms 42:1-5)When you look at the world, what do you see? When you watch TV or catch a video on your phone; when you scroll through Facebook or Instagram, what kind of things stand out for you?For some, it might be a hope that others have ‘liked' something you posted yesterday. For others, the latest trivia might grab your attention. Or a cute photograph. Perhaps a feel-good story. For those who are compelled to stay in touch with national and international events, it is rarely good news that makes the headlines. Another conflict in another country. Another scandal.  I wonder, do you ever try to look with spiritual eyes? Do you ask yourself “I wonder how God sees all this”? And therefore, “How may I view the world with His heart – with a heart of righteousness”? Jesus said, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled” (Matt 5: 6). In other words, blessed are those who want to see things from God's perspective, Blessed are those who want righteousness to reign. The writer of Psalm 42 has been living in troubled times, and he remembers better days (v 4). He knows God is the only one who can change things. Like a deer desperate for water on a hot, dry day, the psalmist is thirsty for God's presence. For God and His righteousness to come. How might we reflect that desperation today? Perhaps it starts in our prayer life. Pray for salvations to occur; pray for God's love, help and peace to reach those who need Him. Pray for God intervene in events we see on the news. Pray for God to reign in your workplace, in your street, in your town, in your city, in all the dark places. Those who hunger and thirst will be filled. What will they be filled with? Some suggest a deeper relationship with God and a transformed heart. But perhaps they will also experience the satisfaction of seeing God turning things around in ways we can't even imagine. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”

Welcome to Day 2578 of Wisdom-Trek. Thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Day 2578 – Wisdom Nuggets – Psalm 50:1-6 Daily Wisdom Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2578 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2578 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. In today's Wisdom Nugget, we begin our exploration of Psalm 50, focusing on verses 1-6. This psalm, written by Asaph, presents a dramatic scene in which God Himself appears as the divine Judge, summoning the heavens and the earth to witness His judgment over His people. From an Ancient Israelite perspective, this psalm would have carried deep significance. The imagery of God speaking from Zion, fire and storm surrounding Him, and His call for justice would have reminded them of God's covenant at Mount Sinai. The Israelites were well aware that God was not just their Deliverer but also their Judge, calling them to righteousness and true worship. Let's begin by reading Psalm 50:1-6 from the New Living Translation: Psalm 50:1-6 (NLT) 1 The Lord, the Mighty One, is God, and He has spoken; He has summoned all humanity from where the sun rises to where it sets. 2 From Mount Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines in glorious radiance. 3 Our God approaches, and He is not silent. Fire devours everything in His way, and a great storm rages around Him. 4 He calls on the heavens above and earth below to witness the judgment of His people. 5 “Bring My faithful people to Me— those who made a covenant with Me by giving sacrifices.” 6 Then let the heavens proclaim His justice, for God Himself will be the judge. God Calls the Whole Earth to Attention (Verses 1-2) The psalm begins with a grand and powerful statement: “The Lord, the Mighty One, is God, and He has spoken; He has summoned all humanity from where the sun rises to where it sets.” The threefold name of God—“The Lord, the Mighty One, is God”—immediately establishes His authority and power. In the Ancient Near East, kings and rulers would summon their people for important announcements, but here, it is God Himself summoning all of humanity. This is not a private revelation—God's message is for the entire world. From east to west, all people are called to attention. Verse 2 continues: “From Mount Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines in glorious radiance.” Zion, referring to Jerusalem and the temple, was seen as the earthly dwelling place of God's presence. The psalmist calls it “the perfection of beauty”, not because of its architecture, but because God's glory radiates from there. This verse echoes passages like Isaiah 2:3, which...

The first fifteen verses of Exodus 22 deal with restitution of property. The theft of a sheep, when discovered had to be repaid fourfold: cp David's repaying for his theft of a ewe lamb in losing four of his sons 2 Samuel 12 verses 1-6. There were different rates for other animals. Verses 5-6 cover damage to grain through negligence - non controlling of a beast, or fire. Verses 7-13 deals  with property entrusted to another; and outlines the discussion around resolution of an arising disagreement. In verses 14-15 deals with hiring arrangements. Verses 16-31 centre around being holy people in their dealings with their neighbours. All dealings are underlined by the need to be just, fair and kind. All of these laws centre around protecting the weakest members of society and ensuring care is provided for them. The laws also provide advice for dealing with those powerful members of the community who would often exploit those people who are downcast. Psalms 75 and 76 are both from the pen of Asaph. There is a cluster of psalms here in the Sanctuary psalms of Book 3. They are all addressed to the Choirmaster. Psalm 75 is a prayer that God will rise up to judge the world in equity and righteousness. It begins with thanksgiving to the Almighty for His past faithfulness. Next the psalmist declares that he knows that God has appointed a set time for judgment: Psalm 102 verses 13-22; Acts 17 verses 30-31; 2 Timothy 4 verses 1-2. In this we too can rejoice. The Almighty would bring judgment from neither the east, nor the west; it always came from the north. God is the Judge, a kindred word to Dan; which tribe's inheritance was in the north. The cup in the Omnipotent Creator's hand contains the wine of retribution, which will be poured upon the guilty from all nations - those drunken with their own sense of self importance; and they drain that cup to the very bottom. Then will the faithful righteous be joyful in their Mighty One and exultant in Him. Psalm 76 tells the hearer that then Judah will be exalted and honoured Zechariah 8:20-23. Verses 2-4 describe the glorious abode of the LORD in Zion - the elevated world capital: Psalm 48 Isaiah 2 verses 1-5, Jeremiah 3 verses16-17; Matthew 5 verses 34-35. Once God has risen for judgment who can stand against Him and that His purpose cannot be frustrated by mere mortals. Those who remain no matter how important they were prior to His great work will be humbled by the Almighty when He has executed His judgement and all the earth will praise and worship the Almighty God of Israel. Mark's 8th chapter commences with the feeding of 4,000. The record contains some contrasts with that of the 5,000 - 1) the 5,000 were Jewish, the 4,000 were not; 2) the Apostles had immediate compassion for the 5,000, but no compassion for the others despite watching the multitude enduring for 3 days without any food; 3) the numbers of bread and fishes involved differed and taught different messages out of the feedings. This is followed by the rulers asking, but not receiving another sign. A discussion between our Lord and his enemies ensued about leaven. The disciples assume that Jesus was rebuking them for forgetting to take food. How illogical this was for he had shown his power to make food. It was about the corrupt influence of wrongful teaching. The chapter continues with the healing of a blind man. This man was cured by stages and took place at Bethsaida, illustrating the problem of perception - we so often, like that man see people out of proportion. Jesus next questions his Apostles on other people's perception of himself. Then our Lord asks them who they thought him to be. Several answers were given until Peter responded by declaring that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the Living God. All of the Apostles are charged to not reveal this until after our Lord Jesus Christ has been raised from the dead. Once again our Master speaks of his despicable treatment, crucifixion and resurrection the 3rd day. The chapter finishes with an appeal for each of us to take up our stake daily to follow our Lord Jesus.

Hebrews 12:26-27 And His voice shook the earth then, but now He has promised, saying, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heaven.” This expression, “Yet once more,” denotes the removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created things, so that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. When Moses called the people to Mt. Sinai to give them the words of God, it was an earthshaking event. Ex. 19:18. “Now Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke because the LORD had descended on it in fire. The smoke of it went up like the smoke of a kiln, and the whole mountain trembled greatly.” According to the Holy Spirit, the incredible display on and in the mountain was to heighten their sensibilities to the importance of the message. It was to impress on them the seriousness of ignoring His word, producing the fear of the Lord.    These verses are a commentary of the Holy Spirit on Haggai 2:6-7, which recalled to the minds of his audience the initial giving of the Law and the first covenant. Haggai prophesied of another time when God would speak, and the importance of the message would be exponentially greater. Much more would be shaken than one single mountain. I read Ps. 50:1-2 a few days ago. “The Mighty One, God, the Lord, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to where it sets. From Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines forth.” From Mt. Sinai, just the nation of Israel was summoned. From Zion, the heavenly city, everyone on earth is summoned to listen and obey. The author remembered Haggai's reference to the word of the Lord prophesying of the very time in which the author and his readers were living.  For thus says the Lord of hosts: Yet once more, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land. And I will shake all nations, so that the treasures of all nations shall come in, and I will fill this house with glory, says the Lord of hosts. The time in which the original audience and we live has been promised. God has spoken in His Son, Jesus Christ, and calls everyone to pay attention to His words, He has shaken the entire earth and the heavens. Nothing in this world is stable. God said to Jesus, “You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands; they will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment, like a robe you will roll them up, like a garment they will be changed. But you are the same, and your years will have no end” (Heb. 1:10-12). When His blood was finally spilled, it spoke! The earth shook, the veil in the temple was torn from top to bottom, and even the graves were opened and the dead were resurrected by the power of that word. Just before turning Himself over to be crucified, told His disciples, “I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Do you get it? From the time Jesus came, the entire world system has been shaking at the sound of the gospel, calling men and women to repent of seeking life in this unstable, shaking world, and to come to God through His blood to receive an eternal kingdom. God is filling His house with glory as He shakes us out of the nations into His kingdom of love. He is shaking everything on earth to gather His people for glory.

This teaching is from Matthew 26:39-68 Come along as we see: Who Jesus is and why we so desperately need Him As we look at Jesus' story of His arrest and trial, we will learn that Jesus is faithful and we are not, Jesus is fearless and we are not, Jesus is forthright and we are not. Today's story opens in the Garden of Gethsemane with Jesus having asked His disciples to stay awake while He goes to pray and share His heart with the Father. Jesus knows what is coming and asks the Father if there is another way - yet ends the prayer saying, “not my will, Father, but Yours.”  Jesus remains faithful to accomplish the will of the Father. As Jesus returns the 3rd time from praying to the Father He again discovers the disciples sleeping.  He wakes them as the scene changes… we read next the betrayal by Judas as he point out Jesus in the crowd by kissing/greeting Him. Jesus is seized and arrested, yet He fearlessly goes with them, faithful to the will of God the Father. Peter then cuts off the ear of one of the servants that was present and Jesus immediately heals the ear, telling Peter not to give into hatred.  Jesus doesn't resist arrest and willingly steps into fulfilling the Scriptures. The prophetic words spoken in the Old Testament about Jesus are fulfilled and it is in seeing this fulfillment of His first coming, that we know what the Bible tells us of His second coming is truth, as well.  Jesus will fulfill, one day soon, everything predicted in His return. There is so much more to come and we don't want to miss it! What He offers is life forever with Him!  Faith in Him delivers and saves us! As Jesus is taken away His disciples abandon Him, leaving Him alone and deserted. He is brought before the High Priest, Caiaphas.  Peter hangs back in the courtyard area. (A spot that comes into play in next week's study!)  The Sanhedrin begin looking for evidence against Jesus. Two witnesses declare that Jesus said “I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in 3 days.” These were words spoken during the story of Jesus cleansing the Temple. Pastor shares some interesting insight into there being 2 times Jesus cleansed the temple and not just once. One at the beginning of His ministry and then again just days before His arrest. The temple cleansings bookend His ministry. The High Priest asks Jesus to answer the change of destroying the temple and building it up in three days, but Jesus does not answer. Again displaying His fearlessness. He remains quiet. Caiaphus seeing he doesn't have enough evidence to convict Jesus, then demands that Jesus tells them, under oath of the Living God, if He is the Messiah the Son of God. Meaning: Are you making a claim to divinity (and this was a crime). And Jesus answers, “You have said so.” And goes on saying, “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” (Matthew 26:64) Jesus' forthrightness in His answer describes who He Is by quoting Old Testament Scriptures (Daniel 7:13 and Psalm 110:1). In His answer, Jesus is claiming Deity and thus convicts Himself.  At Jesus' words the High Priest tears His clothes (something that was only permitted when someone was blasphemous). Verses 65-66 continue, “Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, ‘He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” The crowd answered, “He is worthy of death.” Our study ends with Jesus' faithfulness and fearlessness as seen in verses 67-68: “Then they spit in Jesus' face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?” When we meet next the story of Jesus' arrest and conviction continue with more for us to learn on who Jesus is! Join us! Hebrews 12:23 to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the Judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, Yesterday's verse focused on the place, the heavenly Jerusalem, to where we are running. Today's verse has those who dwell in heaven in view. We aren't living for the glory of God by living to love with Jesus just so we can get to a destination. When we believed in Christ, we came to a new family. We became part of a universal assembly of all believers of all time. The author called it the assembly of the firstborn. Jesus, of course, is the firstborn, the head of the church.  We also learn that our names are registered in heaven. Are you on heaven's registry? Paul wrote of this to the Philippians in 4:3. “Yes, I ask you also, true companion, help these women, who have labored side by side with me in the gospel together with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.” We read of this register in Rev. 21:27. “But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life.” Our names are already posted at the finish line! Praise to the Lord! We are also encouraged that we have come to God, the Judge of all, the Mighty One, as we read yesterday from Ps. 50. Jesus came and died to bring us to God and present us before Him, holy and blameless and without reproach (Col. 1:22). Hebrews 2:10-11 made this point clear. “For it was fitting for Him, for whom and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to perfect the author of their salvation through suffering. For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all from one Father. For this reason, He is not ashamed to call them brothers.” We have come to God. And we have also come to the spirits of the righteous made perfect. Let me quote Jonathan Edwards again from Heaven, A World of Love. “There are none but lovely objects in heaven. — No. odious, or unlovely, or polluted person or thing is to be seen there. All the persons that belong to the blessed society of heaven are lovely. The father of the family is lovely, and so are all his children; the head of the body lovely, and so are all the members. Among the angels there are none that are unlovely — for they are all holy.”  Can you see who we have come to when we believe in Jesus? We are now part of a community of brothers and sisters who will know nothing but love for one another because the entire atmosphere is love. How do we get ready for that experience? We live our lives to love our brothers and sisters now with Jesus because that's what we are going to do for all eternity. Let's get a head start today. Love with Jesus, knowing that God, the Judge, the Father of the family, will reward you greatly and you will be filled with His joy forever. Hebrews 12:22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, This and the next three verses serve as a contrast to Mt. Sinai, where Moses received the first and old covenant. Since we have been thinking about running a race, we might think of it this way. Before Jesus came, the finish line to which all were running was on Mt. Sinai and the course they were running was the Law. The old covenant came from Mt. Sinai and the Law. Now, since Jesus came, the course is Jesus, Himself, and the finish line is heaven. The new covenant comes from heaven.  The earthly Mt. Zion was the mountain upon which Abraham offered the ram in place of Isaac. It was where Jacob had the dream of stairs to heaven. The city of David was established there. David purchased the threshing floor of Onan to atone for his sin on Mt. Zion. Solomon's temple was built on Mt. Zion. However, in this verse, we learn that Mt. Zion has a symbolic meaning. It signifies the place where God's presence is manifested. To the Hebrews, Zion is the place of salvation. Therefore, it is synonymous with the city of the living God (remember, Jesus was the promised King from David's line), the millennial Jerusalem, and the heavenly Jerusalem, home to myriads of angels. Notice how Psalm 50:1-2 speaks of the Lord's presence and His word going forth to all the earth. “The Mighty One, God, the Lord, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to where it sets. From Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines forth.”  The author was focusing on the finish line for us who are running the race. He was giving his readers encouragement to run with endurance. The reward is great to those who run well and endure to the end. In essence, we are looking at this great salvation that Jesus has given to all who believe. In this verse, we are encouraged to live to love with Jesus until we die or Jesus returns by considering our destination, our finish line. We are running to heaven, from which our salvation comes through Jesus Christ. When we draw near to the throne of grace, we are abiding in Christ. We are drawing near to God's throne in heaven for grace to run the race to the end. It's where God speaks and shines forth in all His beauty. He is the mighty One.  In Jonathan Edward's treatise on the loveliness of heaven, Heaven, a World of Love, he wrote, “Heaven is the palace or presence-chamber of the high and holy One, whose name is love, and who is both the cause and source of all holy love. And this renders heaven a world of love; for God is the fountain of love, as the sun is the fountain of light. And therefore the glorious presence of God in heaven, fills heaven with love, as the sun, placed in the midst of the visible heavens in a clear day, fills the world with light.” I think you get the point. We are in a full run toward the presence of God, who is love. Now, that love is a failing love. It isn't perfected, but we are running to a city, a country where we are from, that is all love. Therefore, let loving with Jesus be our course. Stay on course by abiding in Jesus, drawing near to His throne in heaven for grace to endure. We are running to heaven by the grace given us from heaven.

A sermon for Advent 4, December 22, 2024 by the Ven. Kellie Mysinger Luke 1:39-45(46-55) In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord." [And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever."]

This week we're discussing Elizabeth, pregnant with John the Baptist, giving her sermon to Mary, pregnant with Jesus, and Mary's Magnificat in response. Sarah Stenson and Lars Olson point out the importance of Elizabeth being filled with the Holy Spirit before delivering her sermon to Mary. As you'll hear, Mary, and you and I today, are blessed because of what God has spoken to us. Then in Mary's Magnificat, Sarah and Lars zero in on Mary saying, “My soul magnifies the Lord.” They teach us that it's the great works of God that are being magnified. He is the one who is delivering his word of mercy. He is the one who is being unfair. He is the one who looks at us with favor. ADVENT PLANNING GUIDE Luther House of Study is pleased to announce a brand new Advent Planning Guide! The virgin's name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God."  1.     When faced with fear of the unknown, Mary chose to accept God's purpose and plans for her life.  Luke 1:31b-33 (NIV)“You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob's descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” Luke 1:34-35 (NIV)“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.” Luke 1:38 (NIV)“I am the Lord's servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.”  Luke 1:46-49 (NIV)“And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. Passage:  1 The Mighty One, God, the Lord, speaks; he summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. 2 From Zion, the perfection of beauty, God appears in radiance.  3 Our God is coming; he will not be silent! Devouring fire precedes him, and a storm rages around him. 4 On high, he summons heaven and earth in order to judge his people: 5 “Gather my faithful ones to me, those who made a covenant with me by sacrifice.” 6 The heavens proclaim his righteousness, for God is the Judge. Selah -- Psalms 50:1-6 (CSB) Song: Christ is Coming (https://open.spotify.com/track/1rfHpuFhvuaJEa5lQVaeSw?si=7058896f696a45b8) by John R. MacDuff, arr. Providence Church worship team Lyrics: 1 Christ is coming! Let creation from her groans and travail cease; let the glorious proclamation hope restore and faith increase: Christ is coming! Christ is coming! Come, Thou blessed Prince of Peace, come, Thou blessed Prince of Peace. 2 Earth can now but tell the story Of Thy bitter cross and pain; she shall yet behold Thy glory, When Thou comest back to reign: Christ is coming! Christ is coming! Let each heart repeat the strain, let each heart repeat the strain. 3 Long Thine exiles have been pining, far from rest, and home, and Thee; but, in heav'nly vestures shining, they their loving Lord shall see: Christ is coming! Christ is coming! Haste the joyous jubilee, haste the joyous jubilee. 4 With that blessed hope before us, let no harp remain unstrung; let the mighty advent chorus onward roll from tongue to tongue: "Christ is coming! Christ is coming! Come, Lord Jesus, quickly come, come, Lord Jesus, quickly come!" Prayer:  Grant, Almighty God, that as you have stretched forth your helping hand to us by your only begotten Son, not only binding yourself to us by an oath, but even sealing your eternal covenant by the blood of the same, your Son—grant that we in turn may keep our faith toward you so that we persevere in the undefiled worship of your name, till we attain unto the reward of our faith in your heavenly kingdom, through the same, Christ our Lord. Amen.  -John Calvin

Throughout the world the holy Church acclaims you;Father, of majesty unbounded, your true and only Son, worthy of all worship, and the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide. You, Christ, are the king of glory, the eternal Son of the Father. When you became man to set us free you did not shun the Virgin's womb. You overcame the sting of deathand opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers. You are seated at God's right hand in glory. We believe that you will come and be our judge.Come then, Lord, and help your people, bought with the price of your own blood, and bring us with your saintsto glory everlasting. 1 Thess. 2:1-12A Reading from the First Letter to the Thessalonians. For you yourselves know, brothers, that our coming to you was not in vain. But though we had already suffered and been shamefully treated at Philippi, as you know, we had boldness in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in the midst of much conflict. For our appeal does not spring from error or impurity or any attempt to deceive, but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts. For we never came with words of flattery, as you know, nor with a pretext for greed—God is witness. Nor did we seek glory from people, whether from you or from others, though we could have made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother taking care of her own children. So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.  For you remember, brothers, our labor and toil: we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, while we proclaimed to you the gospel of God. You are witnesses, and God also, how holy and righteous and blameless was our conduct toward you believers. For you know how, like a father with his children, we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory. The Word of the Lord. Thanks Be To God. Benedictus Dominus DeusBlessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; * he has come to his people and set them free.He has raised up for us a mighty savior, * born of the house of his servant David.Through his holy prophets he promised of old, that he would save us from our enemies, * from the hands of all who hate us. He promised to show mercy to our fathers * and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham, * to set us free from the hands of our enemies, Free to worship him without fear, * holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, * for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, To give his people knowledge of salvation * by the forgiveness of their sins.In the tender compassion of our God * the dawn from on high shall break upon us, To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, * and to guide our feet into the way of peace.Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. The Apostles CreedI believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Meadowbrooke Church Sermon Podcast

It has been a few weeks since we were in Ephesians. The last sermon I preached was on the shoes of the gospel of peace. I have a confession to make, and it is not one to be proud of: I am not very good at creating space for my own rest. One of the symptoms that a break and vacation is needed is when your pastor takes 15-20 minutes to talk about shoes during his sermon introduction! In preparation for this sermon, I have been thinking about the importance of rest as it is related to faith. One of the Ten Commandments is to, Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy (Exod. 20:8-11). Here is the irony with the fourth commandment: The first four commandments address our relationship with God and the last six commandments address our relationships with one another. I am of the opinion that a Sabbath rest has less to do with the seventh day of the week and more to do with our need to separate ourselves from the noise of life. Regarding the fourth commandment, Jesus said: The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath (Mark 2:23-28). The purpose of the Sabbath is that it creates space for you to listen to God for the purpose being strengthened in Him. The reason why the fourth commandment is sandwiched between the first three concerning our vertical relationship with God and the final six concerning our horizontal relationships with your neighbor is because if you ignore a Sabbath rest, both your relationship with God and your relationships with others will suffer. If you ignore the fourth commandment, you will be more prone to develop idols in your heart and become little good to those around you. So, here is what I want you to hear as we move forward: Sabbath rest stabilizes gospel grounded faith. The kind of rest I am talking about must include the kind of rest described in Psalm 46:10, Stop striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted on the earth. Now, with Gods command for a Sabbath rest as our backdrop, lets consider again the armor of God: Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist on the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. (Eph. 6:1013) Remember that the schemes belong to the devil, but the armor we are to put on belongs to God. The belt of truth is our identity in Christ, the breastplate of righteousness is our righteousness in Christ, and the shoes of the gospel of peace enable us to keep our footing in the whole Gospel, that includes our salvation but also the full redemption of all creation. The whole Gospel includes our resurrection, but it also promises us a day when sorrow and sighing will flee away: And the redeemed of the Lord will return and come to Zion with joyful shouting, and everlasting joy will be on their heads. They will obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing will flee away (Isa. 51:11). The fourth piece of Gods armor is the shield of faith. The questions we need to answer are what is it really; and how does one use the shield of faith? What is the Shield of Faith? The shield Paul had in mind was not the small round shield you would expect a soldier to have for hand-to-hand combat, for it was light but left most of the body exposed. Instead, the shield Paul envisioned was more like the one a soldier carried to protect his whole body from the enemys arrows shot from a distance. The large shield was called a scutum and was typically used by Roman legionaries. It was designed not only to protect the soldier wielding it from arrows, but was designed especially to protect him from arrows that were dipped in pitch and lit on fire before they were launched. The front of the shield was covered in leather that could be soaked in water; in this way, when the flaming arrows hit the shield, the fire would be quenched. For what purpose did a flaming arrow (aka fire arrow) serve? What is fire known for doing? The enemy would launch flaming arrows to set on fire anything that was flammable such as buildings, materials, and enemy troops. Fire consumes and destroys, and this is exactly what the rulers, powers, world forces of this darkness, and the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places desire to do to any and all of Gods people. We are told to take up the shield of faith to protect us from such attacks from the enemy, but what is it? Is the shield of faith a self-determined will to hold on to what you believe? Is it something that you would have more of if you simply believed more? Is the shield of faith more about having enough faith in what we read about in the Bible so that you can claim financial, emotional, relational, spiritual, and physical healing and wholeness for yourself? I dont think the shield of faith includes any of that. Remember that Paul did not just come up with the armor of God because of some Roman soldiers around him. Paul received his shield metaphor from the Old Testament. To address Abrahams fear about being without an heir, God promised Him, Do not fear Abram, I am a shield to you; your reward shall be very great. In Psalm 28:7, David celebrated the God who hears the prayers of His people with these words: Blessed be the Lord, because He has heard the sound of my pleading. The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and I am helped; therefore my heart triumphs, and with my song I shall thank Him. However, I think Proverbs 30:5 is the most helpful verse that helps us understand what the shield of faith is: Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him. So, which is it? Is God our shield and if so, how can our faith be the shield? On this point Iain Duguid is helpful: Faith is the means by which we flee to God for refuge. It is how we cling to God and find in him comfort and protection in times of difficulty and distress.[1] It is one thing to believe that God exists but is quite another thing to flee to the God you know to be true because of the way He has revealed Himself through His Word. The more you know about God, the more inclined you will be to flee to Him as your refuge and strength, for the Bible says, the people who know their God will be strong and take action (Dan. 11:32b). The way you cling to God and find Him to be your comfort and protection is through His Word! We are told in Ephesians 5:26 that Jesus intends to sanctify and beautify His church through the washing of water with the word. It is the word of God that we use to saturate our shield to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. This is not a New Testament concept; it is a Genesis through Revelation principle for living faithfully before God. Listen to Psalm 119:10-11 and tell me if you cannot hear the same tone that you hear in Ephesians 6:16, With all my heart I have sought You; Do not let me wander from Your commandments. I have treasured Your word in my heart, so that I may not sin against You. How do We Use the Shield of Faith? It is all well and good to know what the shield of faith is, but how do you use it? To answer that question, permit me to show you something that I have read dozens of times and missed because I did not read Ephesians 6:14-17 as carefully as I should have. There are six pieces that belong to the armor of God. The first three are all pieces that a soldier puts on and keeps on so long as he is active: ...having belted your waist with truth (v. 14a) ...having put on the breastplate of righteousness (v. 14b) ...having strapped on your feet the preparation of the gospel of peace (v. 15) Each of these pieces are attached to the Christian as part of his/her identity in Christ. The belt of truth is your new identity in Christ, the breastplate of righteousness is your righteousness in Christ, and the shoes of the gospel of peace are the promise of full redemption that Jesus makes possible. You put on these pieces of armor by standing in the gospel, confidently recognizing that all your righteousness is in Christ, and that your identity is rooted in Christ as truth for all of life! Now notice the final three pieces of the armor of God and how Paul distinguishes them from the first three pieces with the words, in addition to all...: ...taking up the shield of faith (v. 16) ...take the helmet of salvation (v. 17a) ...take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (v. 17b) The soldiers shield, helmet, and sword were all a part of his armor, but they were pieces he could take up and put down at will. The enemy can tempt you to believe that Christ is not enough, but what he already knows is that your righteousness is Christs righteousness; wearing the breastplate of righteousness is simply walking in light of that truth. However, when the enemy attacks with his flaming arrows in the form of temptations, lies, and accusations, you can choose to take up the shield of faith or allow those arrows to pierce you so that their fire can overwhelm, consume, and incapacitate you. If you are a Christian and you have truly been born again, the flaming arrows may not be able to destroy your soul, but they certainly can wound to the point of rendering you immobile and unable to fully engage and participate in Gods mission in the world and purpose for your life. If you are a Christian, the enemy knows that God chose you before the foundation of the world (Eph. 1:4-6), that you were fully and completely redeemed by the blood of His Son (1:7-12), and that you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit as Gods inheritance to receive all of His promises (1:13-14, 18-23). In fact, I am convinced that the devil has more of a theological grasp over what it means for you to be a Christian than many Christians, but if he can deceive you, if he can aid in destroying your Christian witness, if he can paralyze you with shame and guilt to keep you from clinging to all that the cross of Christ represents, then he will do all within his ability to do just that! Dear Christian, when those flaming arrows come, you have a shield God has given that you can take up to defend yourself from such attacks! God has given us all that we need, but faith in His promises, a dependance upon Him, and the responsibility to proactively saturate our faith with the word of God is something we must do. Conclusion The enemy will launch his flaming arrows but make no mistake from what we have learned so far from Ephesians, there is also the danger we face from self-inflicted wounds when we fall into temptation. The devil never makes us sin, we do that all on our own! This is why it is important to take on the full armor of God. When we are mindful that Jesus is our identity and not our sin, when we are fully aware that Jesus is our only hope and righteousness, and then stand in the truth of all of Gods redemptive promises, our resolve to resist sin and temptation becomes more determined. But, when the flaming arrows fly you can lower your shield and let them pierce and consume, or you can take up your shield. When the enemy whispers: You sinned and now you are too disgusting for God to love you! You take up your shield saturated with the word of God and say: Do not rejoice over me, enemy of mine. Though I fall I will rise; though I live in darkness, the Lord is a light for me... He will bring me out to the light, and I will look at His righteousness (Micah 7:8, 9). You take up your shield saturated by the word of God and say, God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.... For if while we were enemies we were reconciled, we shall be saved by His life (Rom. 5:8, 10). Dont you think that Mary and Joseph endured many the constant barrage of the enemys flaming arrows the moment they found out about the conception of Jesus while Mary was still a virgin? Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her: Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and you shall name Him Jesus (Luke 1:30-31). Her only question was: How? since she was a virgin. After the angel told her that the Holy Spirit would make it possible miraculously, her response was simply: Behold, the Lords bond-servant; may it be done to me according to your word (v. 38). Mary could have been overwhelmed by fear over what her mother, father, relatives, and neighbors would think, but instead she raised up her shield of faith in the form of a song saturated with what she knew from the word of God: My soul exalts the Lord, And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. For He has had regard for the humble state of His bond-servant; For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed. For the Mighty One has done great things for me; And holy is His name. And His mercy is to generation after generation Toward those who fear Him. He has done mighty deeds with His arm; He has scattered those who were proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones, And has exalted those who were humble. He has filled the hungry with good things, And sent the rich away empty-handed. He has given help to His servant Israel, In remembrance of His mercy, Just as He spoke to our fathers, To Abraham and his descendants forever. (Luke 1:4755) Joseph could have walked out on Mary in disbelief, but He took up his shield as well and believed that God was not only big enough to make the conception of Jesus supernaturally possible, but he too believed the word of God: Behold, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a Son, and they shall name Him Immanuel (Isa. 7:14; see also Matt. 1:18-25). So, how do you use the shield of faith? How do you take it up to defend yourself? You take up the shield of faith each time you flee to God for refuge through the truth of His word and cling to Him to find your comfort and protection in times of difficulty and distress. Thankful for Our Win-Win Situation - 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Today's message is a simple one: make sure this week you keep the THANKS in Thanksgiving, and remember WHO to give thanks to: the very God who created you and died to redeem you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Notice how short these 3 verses are: verse 16 is just 2 words; verse 17 is just 3; verse 18 is just 17. All 3 are only 22 verses, (John 3:16 is 24). You could memorize these verses this week and quote them at Thanksgiving! Notice also that we are told it is God's WILL for believers to “rejoice always, pray without ceasing, and give thanks in all circumstances.” God WANTS, desires, and expects these things to characterize true believers. The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law. - Deuteronomy 29:29 Notice that God's word does not present 3 suggestions here, but 3 commands. Believers are commanded to “rejoice, pray and give thanks” no matter how they are feeling or what they are experiencing. How many times did Paul command believers to “rejoice?” At least 7 times! “Rejoice in the Lord always, again I say, rejoice!” - Philippians 4:4 Even if I am being poured out as a drink offering…I am glad and rejoice with you all. -Phil. 2:17 Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church. - Col. 1:24 A non-Christian would not respond well to a command to rejoice and give thanks, especially if their circumstances we're bad. They would think you cruel for suggesting it. Do you know who else has a hard time with the commands to rejoice always, pray without ceasing, and give thanks in all circumstances? Those we may call “carnal Christians.” As for the one sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and pleasures of life choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. - Combine of Mt. 13:22 & Lk. 8:14 The faithful and fruitful follower of Jesus Christ can be commanded to rejoice whether circumstances are going our way or not, because God has given us an eternal perspective about wins and losses in life. Bur rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when His glory is revealed. - 1 Pet. 4:13 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. - Phil. 4:6-7 (note how close to 4:4) Christians can always rejoice and give thanks because we pray to the God who is always in control. What do we mean when we say that God is in control? That God will have the final word in our lives, not circumstances. Genetics is important, but it can't overcome environment; Environment is important, but it can't overcome circumstances; Circumstances are important, but they can't overcome our choices; Our choices are important, but can't overcome God's choices. The LORD your God is in your midst, a Mighty One who will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you with His love; He will exult over you with loud singing. - Zephaniah 3:17

Big Idea: Only the Gospel creates flourishing from failure!  In the Beginning: Joseph Genesis 43:13-33 I. The conditions of flourishing. 13-21 Zebulun will live by the seashore and will be a harbor for ships, and his territory will be next to Sidon. Issachar is a strong donkey lying down between the saddlebags. He saw that his resting place was good and that the land was pleasant, so he leaned his shoulder to bear a load and became a forced laborer. Dan will judge his people as one of the tribes of Israel. Dan will be a snake by the road, a viper beside the path, that bites the horse's heels so that its rider falls backward. I wait for your salvation, Lord. Gad will be attacked by raiders, but he will attack their heels. Asher's food will be rich, and he will produce royal delicacies. Naphtali is a doe set free that bears beautiful fawns.   II. The fruit of flourishing. 22-27 Joseph is a fruitful vine, a fruitful vine beside a spring; its branches climb over the wall. The archers attacked him, shot at him, and were hostile toward him. Yet his bow remained steady, and his strong arms were made agile by the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob, by the name of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel, by the God of your father who helps you, and by the Almighty who blesses you with blessings of the heavens above, blessings of the deep that lies below, and blessings of the breasts and the womb. The blessings of your father excel the blessings of my ancestors and the bounty of the ancient hills. May they rest on the head of Joseph, on the brow of the prince of his brothers. Benjamin is a wolf; he tears his prey. In the morning he devours the prey, and in the evening he divides the plunder.”   III. The length of flourishing. 28-33 These are the tribes of Israel, twelve in all, and this is what their father said to them. He blessed them, and he blessed each one with a suitable blessing. Then he commanded them, “I am about to be gathered to my people. Bury me with my ancestors in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hethite. The cave is in the field of Machpelah near Mamre, in the land of Canaan. This is the field Abraham purchased from Ephron the Hethite as burial property. Abraham and his wife Sarah are buried there, Isaac and his wife Rebekah are buried there, and I buried Leah there. The field and the cave in it were purchased from the Hethites.” When Jacob had finished giving charges to his sons, he drew his feet into the bed, took his last breath, and was gathered to his people. Next Steps:  Believe: I need Jesus to forgive my failures this week.  Become: I will enjoy God's goodness, no matter my circumstances. Be Sent: I will help someone flourish this week. Group Discussion Questions:  Describe the basic elements of human flourishing in your own words. Who is the greatest example of flourishing that you know? Does God define flourishing in the same way as the human definition?  Explain your answer.  Are you flourishing if you're not emotionally or spiritually healthy? What impact do relationships have on a person's flourishing? Can you flourish without contributing to someone else's life? Ask the Holy Spirit to help you flourish in the Gospel this week.

And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.” (Luke 1: 46 – 55)Mary, the mother of Jesus, composed these words while staying with her relative, Elizabeth. She had only just received the mind-numbing news that she was pregnant without any physical contact with a man. A baby will be born to you, someone great, a king, the son of the Most High, said the angel who had visited her, one who has been supernaturally placed in your womb.Upon Mary's arrival, Elizabeth prophesied, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! (Luke 1: 42). The mother-to-be must have felt so overwhelmed that all she could think to do was break out into spontaneous worship. The song Mary sang, tells us a lot about God - she clearly wants all praise to go to him. But her words tell us important things about her too. Mary is humble, in the sense that she knows she is blessed among women, but she is also aware that she doesn't deserve it. When she refers to “humble state of his servant” she is describing what some might call her “lowly state” – in other words, she is not from a wealthy or influential family. Second, even though Mary had no choice but to face the enormity of what lay ahead, there is no sense of complaining in her song. “the Mighty One has done great things for me” she sings, giving praise and declaring the holiness of his name. And finally, Mary's worship reminds her soul that she is a just a part of God's much bigger plans. It's not all about her. God's mercy extends to all generations, no ruler can stay in power if they are against him. He is the Lord of Israel, faithful to their father Abraham and all descendants after him. The Lord lifts the humble and scatters the proud. This is humility at its best. Mary doesn't deny the importance of her calling. She knows all generations will call her blessed. But she knows she hasn't earned it, has done nothing to deserve it and so she places herself as a simple servant within God's great power and purposes.

He burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of the Kidron and carried their ashes to Bethel. 5 And he deposed the priests whom the kings of Judah had ordained to make offerings in the high places at the cities of Judah and around Jerusalem; those also who burned incense to Baal, to the sun and the moon and the constellations and all the host of the heavens. 6 And he brought out the Asherah from the house of the Lord, outside Jerusalem, to the brook Kidron, and burned it at the brook Kidron and beat it to dust and cast the dust of it upon the graves of the common people. 7 And he broke down the houses of the male cult prostitutes who were in the house of the Lord, where the women wove hangings for the Asherah. 8 And he brought all the priests out of the cities of Judah, and defiled the high places where the priests had made offerings, from Geba to Beersheba. And he broke down the high places of the gates that were at the entrance of the gate of Joshua the governor of the city, which were on one's left at the gate of the city. 9 However, the priests of the high places did not come up to the altar of the Lord in Jerusalem, but they ate unleavened bread among their brothers. 10 And he defiled Topheth, which is in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, that no one might burn his son or his daughter as an offering to Molech. 11 And he removed the horses that the kings of Judah had dedicated to the sun, at the entrance to the house of the Lord, by the chamber of Nathan-melech the chamberlain, which was in the precincts. And he burned the chariots of the sun with fire. 12 And the altars on the roof of the upper chamber of Ahaz, which the kings of Judah had made, and the altars that Manasseh had made in the two courts of the house of the Lord, he pulled down and broke in pieces and cast the dust of them into the brook Kidron. 13 And the king defiled the high places that were east of Jerusalem, to the south of the mount of corruption, which Solomon the king of Israel had built for Ashtoreth the abomination of the Sidonians, and for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, and for Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. 14 And he broke in pieces the pillars and cut down the Asherim and filled their places with the bones of men.15 Moreover, the altar at Bethel, the high place erected by Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, that altar with the high place he pulled down and burned, reducing it to dust. He also burned the Asherah. 16 And as Josiah turned, he saw the tombs there on the mount. And he sent and took the bones out of the tombs and burned them on the altar and defiled it, according to the word of the Lord that the man of God proclaimed, who had predicted these things. 17 Then he said, “What is that monument that I see?” And the men of the city told him, “It is the tomb of the man of God who came from Judah and predicted these things that you have done against the altar at Bethel.” 18 And he said, “Let him be; let no man move his bones.” So they let his bones alone, with the bones of the prophet who came out of Samaria. 19 And Josiah removed all the shrines also of the high places that were in the cities of Samaria, which kings of Israel had made, provoking the Lord to anger. He did to them according to all that he had done at Bethel. 20 And he sacrificed all the priests of the high places who were there, on the altars, and burned human bones on them. Then he returned to Jerusalem.21 And the king commanded all the people, “Keep the Passover to the Lord your God, as it is written in this Book of the Covenant.” 22 For no such Passover had been kept since the days of the judges who judged Israel, or during all the days of the kings of Israel or of the kings of Judah. 23 But in the eighteenth year of King Josiah this Passover was kept to the Lord in Jerusalem.24 Moreover, Josiah put away the mediums and the necromancers and the household gods and the idols and all the abominations that were seen in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, that he might establish the words of the law that were written in the book that Hilkiah the priest found in the house of the Lord. 25 Before him there was no king like him, who turned to the Lord with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his might, according to all the Law of Moses, nor did any like him arise after him.1 Corinthians 12:1-11English Standard Version12 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. 3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. The Word of the Lord. Thanks Be To God. Benedictus (The Song of Zechariah)Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; * he has come to his people and set them free.He has raised up for us a mighty savior, * born of the house of his servant David.Through his holy prophets he promised of old, that he would save us from our enemies, * from the hands of all who hate us. Psalm 50 New King James Version God the Righteous Judge A Psalm of Asaph. 1 The Mighty One, God the Lord,Has spoken and called the earthFrom the rising of the sun to its going down.2 Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty,God will shine forth.3 Our God shall come, and shall not keep silent;A fire shall devour before Him,And it shall be very tempestuous all around Him. 4 He shall call to the heavens from above,And to the earth, that He may judge His people:5 “Gather My saints together to Me,Those who have made a covenant with Me by sacrifice.”6 Let the heavens declare His righteousness,For God Himself is Judge. Selah 7 “Hear, O My people, and I will speak,O Israel, and I will testify against you;I am God, your God!8 I will not rebuke you for your sacrificesOr your burnt offerings,Which are continually before Me.9 I will not take a bull from your house,Nor goats out of your folds.10 For every beast of the forest is Mine,And the cattle on a thousand hills.11 I know all the birds of the mountains,And the wild beasts of the field are Mine. 12 “If I were hungry, I would not tell you;For the world is Mine, and all its fullness.13 Will I eat the flesh of bulls,Or drink the blood of goats?14 Offer to God thanksgiving,And pay your vows to the Most High.15 Call upon Me in the day of trouble;I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.” 16 But to the wicked God says:“What right have you to declare My statutes,Or take My covenant in your mouth,17 Seeing you hate instructionAnd cast My words behind you?18 When you saw a thief, you consented with him,And have been a partaker with adulterers.19 You give your mouth to evil,And your tongue frames deceit.20 You sit and speak against your brother; You slander your own mother's son.21 These things you have done, and I kept silent; You thought that I was altogether like you; But I will rebuke you,And set them in order before your eyes. 22 “Now consider this, you who forget God,Lest I tear you in pieces,And there be none to deliver:23 Whoever offers praise glorifies Me;And to him who orders his conduct arightI will show the salvation of God.” --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/maranatha-ministries/support

Psalms 132: A Reflection on God's Covenant with David Psalms 132 is one of the fifteen Songs of Ascents, a collection of psalms that were likely sung by pilgrims journeying to Jerusalem for religious festivals. This particular psalm centers on the covenant between God and King David, emphasizing the importance of both God's promises and David's devotion. Structure and Themes The psalm can be divided into two main sections: 1.David's Oath and Zeal for God's Presence (Verses 1-10): The psalm begins with a plea for God to remember David's commitment and hardships. David had vowed not to rest until he found a place for God's Ark to dwell permanently. This reflects David's deep desire to honor God by establishing a physical dwelling place for Him, which would later become the Temple in Jerusalem. David's passion for building a house for the Ark demonstrates his heart for God and his desire for God's presence to be among His people. Key Verses: •“I will not enter my house or get into my bed, I will not give sleep to my eyes… until I find a place for the Lord, a dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob.” (Verses 3-5) •These verses illustrate David's unwavering commitment to providing a home for God's presence, underscoring the importance of dedication to serving God. 2.God's Covenant and Promises to David (Verses 11-18): In response to David's commitment, God makes an eternal covenant with him. God promises that one of David's descendants will always sit on the throne if his children remain faithful to the covenant. This promise foreshadows the coming of the Messiah, who would come from David's lineage. Furthermore, God declares that Zion, the chosen place for His dwelling, will be blessed with provision, salvation, and joy. Key Verses: •“The Lord swore to David a sure oath… ‘One of your sons I will set on your throne.'” (Verse 11) •“For the Lord has chosen Zion; he has desired it for his dwelling place.” (Verse 13) •These verses reflect God's faithfulness and the divine plan to establish David's line forever, culminating in the reign of Christ, the ultimate fulfillment of the Davidic covenant. Key Messages 1.God Honors Dedication: David's dedication to finding a home for the Ark represents a model of faithfulness. His zeal for God's presence was recognized and honored by God. This serves as a reminder that sincere devotion and service to God are always acknowledged by Him. 2.The Eternal Nature of God's Promises: The second half of the psalm speaks to God's unbreakable promises. God swore an oath to David, establishing an everlasting covenant. Even when people fail, God's faithfulness endures. This promise is most fully realized in Jesus Christ, the descendant of David, who reigns as the eternal King. 3.The Blessing of God's Dwelling: God's choice of Zion as His dwelling place symbolizes His presence and blessing among His people. Where God dwells, there is abundance, salvation, and joy. This highlights the significance of seeking God's presence and aligning oneself with His will, knowing that His presence brings favor and peace. Conclusion Psalms 132 is a powerful psalm that captures both the human longing for God's presence and God's unwavering commitment to His people. David's passion for God's honor and God's covenant with him reflect the mutual relationship of devotion and faithfulness between God and His chosen ones. The psalm not only looks back to David's reign but also points forward to the ultimate fulfillment of God's promise in Jesus Christ, the eternal King who reigns forever. This psalm invites believers to reflect on their own dedication to God, reminding them of the blessings that come from being in His presence and trusting in His promises.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sendme-radio--732966/support.

My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me all day long, “Where is your God?” These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God under the protection of the Mighty One with shouts of joy and praise among the festive throng. Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” John 9:1-2: “As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.” John 11:21-26, 32-35 -- “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” … When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. “Where have you laid him?” he asked. “Come and see Lord,” they replied. Jesus wept.” John 6:67-69: “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve. Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.” Matthew 11.28 – “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”   1 Corinthians 6:19 – “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own”
