But dad, why? Every daughter has said it. When Raquel Quesada entered the family business, she questioned why good wasn't good enough when it came to making premium cigars. She soon learned that construction, consistency, and quality have to be perfect, especially if your father is Cigar Aficionado Hall of Famer, Manuel (Manolo) Quesada. Raquel is among the fifth generation producing the Dominican premium brand, which includes Quesada, Casa Magna, Vega Magna, and Oktoberfest cigars. Find out why humidity control is key to enjoying a Quesada cigar to its fullest from father-daughter cigar makers and Boveda's Drew Emmer. What is Boveda? Coming in at #12 is the Casa Magna Liga F Churchill by Quesada Cigars. Back in 2008, Manuel Quesada teamed up with Nestor Plasencia to release a cigar to be sold under the Quesada Cigars portfolio known as the Casa Magna Colorado. The cigar was met with critical acclaim and commercial success and is widely considered to be one of the most successful collaborations in history. Over the years, Quesada Cigars has grown Casa Magna into a full-fledged brand. Most recently Quesada has been taking over production of the offerings under the brand. One of the more recent offerings that was added to Casa Magna brand was the Liga F in 2021. Liga F stands for Liga Fuerte and fuerte is Spanish for “strong.” The Casa Magna Liga F is meant to be a stronger and bolder expression for the brand. The blend for the Casa Magna Liga F features a sun-grown Ecuadorian Corojo wrapper. There are Dominican tobaccos used for binder and filler. In addition, some Nicaraguan tobaccos are incorporated into the filler. The Churchill size that lands on the countdown is a thicker expression of a Churchill measuring 7 x 50. The Casa Magna Liga F does its job in terms of being bolder. While the cigar started out with medium strength and medium to full body, by the time the smoking experience reaches the final third, it's delivering full strength and full body. This is a complex cigar with plenty of flavor nuances and flavor transitions. Notes include: sweet bread, natural tobacco, creamy almond, earth, cedar, baker's spice, classic wood, and pepper. The cigar totally fires on all cylinders – flavor, construction, and complexity. For Quesada Cigars, this is the eighth year the company has placed a cigar on a Cigar Coop Countdown, including three years in a row. This is the third Dominican-made cigar to land on this year's Countdown and it gives the TABADEX factory a second cigar on the Countdown. Full Report: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-onL

Not only was Quesada Cigars' President Manuel "Manolo" Quesada in attendance, but there were several new and intriguing releases. The Quesadas announced a new addition to the Casa Magna family, the continuing tradition of Oktoberfest, and that Manolo himself has a limited edition cigar to celebrate his 75th birthday. All of these things resulted in a very busy booth for Quesada Cigars throughout the entire four days of the Trade Show. PCA 2022 Report: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-nrS

When you share a cigar, you open up to each other. It's no different for Raquel Quesada who grew up in a cigar dynasty. She revealed some never-told stories to Boveda's Rob Gagner over Quesada 1974 cigars at 2021 PCA in Las Vegas. Raquel talked openly about childhood hijinks; the least favorite training rotation of cigar operations; secret grows on the Quesada tobacco farm; and blending swaps she pulled on her dad, Manuel "Manolo" Quesada. As president and owner of the family-owned cigar factory, Manolo raised two strong daughters to succeed in the C-suite boy's club of premium cigars. Highlights of the cigar conversation with Quesada include: Shaking her booty to Dance VXN (1:07) Tweaking tobacco blends in dad's cigar recipe (13:52) Coloring a box of cigars for consistency (16:07) Making your mark to get what you paid for (18:47) Studying and working at a tobacco shop in Boston—a tropical girl in the snow (21:20) Playing well with competitors strengthens the Dominican cigar industry (27:41) Jamming in a band with Nirka Reyes, Abe Flores, Litto Gomez and “Henke” Kelner (30:21) Being kids on a tobacco farm—Quesada exclusive (31:44) Putting the Quesada name on a cigar for the first time with the Quesada 35th anniversary blend (38:16) Hatching crazy ideas to expand the cigar brand—origin story of the of Quesada Oktoberfest (41:51) How Raquel Quesada is similar to Manolo Quesada (46:44) How Raquel Quesada is different than her dad (47:47) Growing wrapper for an upcoming cigar release—Quesada exclusive (1:00:15) Quesada Cigars protects its premium cigars by packaging with Boveda. From the 2021 PCA Trade Show, we talk to Raquel Quesada of Quesada Cigars. The last half of 2021 is promising to be an exciting one for the Quesada family. The company had several offerings to showcase at this year's trade show. This included a new core offering under the Casa Magna brand, a line extension to the Quesada 1974 line, and the return of the annual Quesada Oktoberfest. While things had been quieter from Quesada over the past year, these new offerings engaged just about everyone who visited the booth. References PCA 2021 Report: Quesada Cigars

This week on Stogie Geeks Shorts, Paul and Will talk about the Casa Magna. The Casa Magna Colorado line was a collaboration between Manuel Quesada and Nestor Plasecnia. In 2008, the two joined forces and created the first cigar out of Placencia's Nicaragua factory, the Casa Magna Colorado. At the end of the year, the cigar made history capturing Cigar Aficionado's #1 spot for 2008. Thumbnail.jpg-0

Cigar of the Week - Monte Pascoal Double Corona DOUBLE CORONA 7 5/8" x 49 Wrapper: Brazil Mata Fina Binder: Brazil Mata Fina Filler: Brazil Mata Fina and Mata Norte What else have you been smokin' Dale? Cubao #1 - 7.1” x 49 - A wonderful Nicaraguan cigar with an Ecuadorian Sumatra Oscuro wrapper, blended by Pepin for the 601 folks. Coffee, oak, leather and a nice pepper spice are well balanced and savory. The smoke is full bodied and very smooth. This churchill size and the #5 toro size represent the blend the best for my tastes. $8+ MSRP, but can be had for around $6.50 and a great value at that price. Elogio Exceptionales - 5.6” x 82 - A very unique (and fat!) figurado from the mind of Carlos Pereda (Flor de San Luis) and produced for the great Elogia brand along the LSV blend theme. While at the factory 3 weeks ago, some of the Cigar Tourism group got to hear the story, see the molds and marvel at this beautiful work of art that also happens to smoke very, very well. Although the center portion of the cigar is so wide, the head is comfortable in the mouth. However, this is not a cigar for driving, golf or any other activity - you need to pay attention to the cigar or someone might get hurt! The blend is Nicaraguan filler from Esteli, Jalapa and a touch of Condega, the binder is a Habano from Esteli and the wrapper is Habano from Ecuador. Lots of cedar, coffee, leather mixed with some citrus and caramel sweetness. Only 3,000 released recently and about all sold out, so most will have to wait for the next release. Casa Magna Colorado Pikito - 4.75” x 42 - I find the draw on most Casa Magna to be a bit firm, and this was no exception. However, it was not hard to get a good mouthful of creamy, rich smoke from this stick. The wrapper is oily and elegant. Of the nine or so sizes this line comes in, the Pikito is worth trying, as I think it concentrates the vastly complex blend into something very special. Along with the usual Nicaragua taste profile, you can find dark cherry, raisin, caramel and toasted grain flavors hidden within the spicy smoke. What else have you been smokin' Bob? Casa Magna Colorado - Named one of the best cigars in 2008, this is an outstanding cigar. Lots of flavor layered together in a classic sytle. The cigar is a collaboration between Manuel Quesada and Nestor Plascencia. A Nicaraguan puro that combines an oily Colorado wrapper with Nicaraguan filler and binder. Rolled at the Plascencia Segovia factory. Layered with flavors of cocoa, coffee and a sweet cedar. GAR Opium - Best GAR I have ever smoked. Wrapper is Nicaraguan Corojo Hybrid; binder is Nicaraguan and the filler is a secret blend. Fausto by Pete Johnson - A much heralded release in 2011, the Fausto is based on the T110 blend and features an Ecuadorian Habano Maduro wrapper and a blend of Nicaragua ligero from Jalapa and Esteli. Touted as a strong and powerful cigar. Amazing depth of flavor, layered leather, cedar and savory notes of mushroom. Yes it is strong and full flavored but not in an overwhelming way. Wicked Indie - The Wicked Indie is the first line under a new brand, the East India Trading Co., from Beach Cigar. Spicy and clean. What's My Band?- This week's unbanded, the Gran Habano Azteca Fuerte Robusto, was provided by Jay Ledou. Do you have a suggestion for the unbanded cigar of the week? Every week Bob and Dale include an “unbanded cigar” segment in their show in which they smoke a cigar without any markings and give their honest opinions. Bob then opens a sealed envelope and discovers the cigar’s name and manufacturer. If you have suggestions for the "What's My Band?" segment, please send them to liz@cigarmedia.tv. Manuel Quesada and Nestor Plascencia have created this cigar and the Robusto even got Cigar of the Year for 2008 from Cigar Aficionado. The Casa Magna Robusto was rated a 92 in Cigar Insider and Cigar Aficionado. This Nicaraguan puro is a medium-full bodied smoke rolled in Nestor Plascencia's Segovia factory in Esteli, Nicaragua. The oily Colorado wrapper finishes off the Nicaraguan binder and filler. Available in Belicoso, Gran Toro, Robusto, and Torito sizes .
