The jury had convicted her in under three hours. The sentencing hearing lasted five.The boys described a house where the oldest walked his brother to the bus stop and made him food because nobody else would. Where the youngest was locked in his room so often his sibling brought him meals. Where animals died because no one gave them food or water. Where a father who would have coached their games, attended their graduations, and taught them to drive was taken from them.Then Kouri spoke for forty minutes. She told her sons to "be like your dad" — the man she was convicted of poisoning with fentanyl. She told them their memories were "an absolute lie." She told them to "ignore the noise" and distrust the people now keeping them safe. She never mentioned a single thing they described.When her own family called her innocent from the podium, the tears appeared instantly. That contrast — scoffing at her children's suffering, crying at her own — became the defining image of the hearing. In this sermon, we are confronted with the truth that God calls us to confront generational brokenness and unbelief with decisive obedience so that He can restore what has been damaged in our families and lives. We see that many of us carry a “reproach” from the past—patterns of hurt, division, or doubt—but that God is willing to remove it in a moment when we submit fully to Him, allowing His Word to cut away competing loyalties and sin. Restoration begins with Christ being first in our lives, and from that place He can rebuild relationships not just to their former state, but into something stronger and better. We are urged to stop delaying, trust that God can act “today,” and take the specific step of repentance or reconciliation He is calling us to, knowing that our obedience brings both healing to our families and glory to His name.

It is shocking that no one was there when Jesus walked out of the tomb, alive...having defeated sin and death forever. This happened even though the disciples and crowd and Pharisees all knew the convincing truth that He was the Son of God and Saviour. Their doubts are an insight into people's hesitation to trust Christ--whether it's because they don't think they need Him or have had trust broken or just can't imagine God loves them so much.
