The Illusion of "Busy" - Productivity vs Activity

Being busy does not mean you are being productive. In this episode of The Level Up Podcast, Paul Alex breaks down the illusion of busy work—and why most entrepreneurs are exhausting themselves without actually moving closer to the goal. Let's be real… A full calendar does not mean a full bank account. Answering emails… Tweaking logos… Organizing your desk… And checking off random tasks might make you feel productive… But if it is not moving the business forward, it is just noise. In this episode, you'll learn: Why activity does not equal accomplishment How busywork keeps entrepreneurs hiding from the hard tasks Why the 80/20 rule should control your daily priorities How deep focus on revenue-generating work creates real momentum The truth is simple: You do not get paid for being tired. You get paid for moving the needle. The highest-level operators are not doing fifty random things a day. They are focused on the few actions that actually matter. Sales. Strategy. Execution. Fulfillment. The work that drives revenue. The work that builds the machine. The work most people avoid because it is uncomfortable. Stop measuring your success by how packed your schedule looks. Measure it by how much closer you are to the mission. Drop the fake work. Protect your focus. Do the heavy lifting. And start producing real results. Your Network is your NETWORTH! How to Recognize When Tweaking Your Marketing is No Longer Enough

What happens when your marketing stops working, but nothing about your business has actually changed? For Tayler Cusick Hollman, founder of Enji, that moment showed up when things started to slow down. After steady growth, the numbers just weren't hitting the same way they used to. Fewer people were starting trials, results required more effort, and the small tweaks that used to make a difference weren't working anymore. In this episode, we take you behind the scenes of what it looks like to navigate that moment in real time. Tayler walks through how she and her team realized this was not just a messaging issue or something that could be solved with another round of testing. Instead, it pointed to something deeper: people were not fully understanding what Enji was or why they needed it. We break down the difference between tweaking and pivoting, and how to recognize when your business needs more than small adjustments. From identifying early warning signs in your data to rethinking your customer persona and redefining your positioning, this conversation highlights what it actually takes to make a meaningful shift instead of staying stuck in optimization mode. This episode also explores the role of ego in keeping business owners stuck longer than they need to be. Tayler shares how easy it is to keep refining something that feels close instead of stepping back and admitting that a bigger change is required. We talk through what it looks like to approach your business with more honesty, how to experiment in a way that gives you clarity, and why a pivot is not a sign of failure, but often the reason a business continues to grow.     In this episode, you'll learn: How to recognize when tweaking your marketing is no longer enough The difference between a marketing problem and a positioning problem What early signs show that something deeper needs to change Why clarity in your messaging impacts every part of your business How redefining your customer persona can unlock growth The role ego plays in keeping business owners stuck Why pivoting is often the key to continued momentum     Links Mentioned Enji Enji Instagram Plannable     Ready to build a brand that actually works for you? In this episode we answer emails from Andrew, Geoff, and Frank.  We discuss connecting risk parity investing to a bigger question: how to build a drawdown portfolio you can hold while using money to live a full life. Along the way we share a Fairfax CASA story, dig into narrative psychology, and answer practical fund questions on modifying the sample Golden Ratio portfolio, large cap stock funds, managed futures, and what beta does and does not tell you. We take a listener-driven mailbag and use it to get practical about risk parity investing, retirement drawdown strategy, and the Golden Ratio portfolio idea as a set of principles rather than a rigid recipe you must copy.We also pause the market talk to highlight Fairfax CASA and share a powerful story about Christopher, a kid who endured years in the foster system before finally finding permanence through consistent advocacy and support. It's a reminder that “long-term” is not an abstract concept, it's something people live through, and steady commitment changes outcomes. From there we jump into what listeners are wrestling with right now: customizing a drawdown portfolio so you'll actually hold it. We talk about why personalizing an allocation can increase adherence, when cash is just drag, how international stocks and small cap value (including AVUV-style “best in class” options) can fit, and how to evaluate managed futures funds like DBMF versus alternatives such as CTA. We also answer the beta question directly: there's no ideal beta target here, because safe withdrawal rates are far more connected to maximum drawdowns and how long a portfolio stays underwater. If you get value from the show, subscribe, share it with a friend planning retirement, and leave a review on your favorite podcast app.Support the show

Reimagining Success with Anna S. E. Lundberg
RS388 - Why redesigning an established business is harder than starting a new one

Reimagining Success with Anna S. E. Lundberg

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 6, 2026 15:06

A few years into your business, something shifts. The model that got you here starts to feel like it's holding you back - but changing it feels far riskier than building it ever did. In this episode, Anna Lundberg unpacks exactly why redesigning an established business is harder than starting one from scratch, and what to do about it. Key takeaways Past decisions become constraints - The offers and structures that built your reputation can trap you in a model that no longer fits, even when walking away feels too risky. More at stake means more resistance - The fear of disrupting income, client commitments, and a hard-won reputation isn't irrational. But letting it freeze the redesign entirely is where the real risk lies. Identity is the hidden blocker - A few years in, the business isn't just something you do - it's become part of who you are. Real redesign requires separating your identity from your business model before you can change either. Tweaking is not redesigning - Adjusting prices, redoing the website, and shifting messaging can all feel like progress without ever touching the structural issue underneath. Start with one room, not the whole house - Pick the single change that would make the biggest difference - who you work with, what you charge, or how you deliver - and work on that before touching anything else. Book a free call with Anna at onestepoutside.com/call to explore what a redesign could look like for your business.

If you've been posting, learning, tweaking your offers, and still wondering why no one is reaching out to work with you — this episode is for you. Because getting your first three clients is not about having a big audience, going viral, or building a complicated funnel. It's about clarity, connection, and taking simple, consistent action. In this episode, I'm breaking down exactly how to get your first three paying coaching clients, even if you're just getting started and don't have a large following. Once you land those first three clients, everything changes — your confidence, your messaging, your momentum, and your belief in what you're building. In This Episode, I Cover: • Why your first 3 clients matter more than your first 100 • The biggest mistake new coaches make when trying to get clients • Why you don't need a large audience to start signing clients • The mindset shift from perfection to connection • How to get clear on your niche and message • What a simple starter offer actually looks like • Where your first clients are really coming from • How to start conversations that lead to clients • Why you must clearly invite people to work with you • The role of messy action in building your business Resources: Are you a health coach in need of done-for-you content? Launch your podcast or get full podcast management services here: https://rachelafeldman.com/the-healthy-hustle-podcast-agency/ Why Your First 3 Clients Change Everything So I want you to understand — your first three clients are not just about making money. They are about momentum. They give you proof, confidence, and the shift from feeling like you're trying to be a coach… to actually becoming one. "Once you get those first three, everything starts to shift… you stop feeling like you're trying to be a coach and start actively becoming one." You Don't Need a Big Audience One of the biggest myths I see new coaches believing is that they need thousands of followers before they can sign clients. You don't. You don't need a perfect website, branding, or a huge audience. What you do need is: • A clear problem you solve • A simple way to talk about it • The courage to invite people "You don't need 10K followers… what you need is a clear problem you help people solve… and the courage to actually invite people." Your Clients Come from Connection, Not Perfection I see so many coaches stuck in preparation mode. Tweaking graphics. Rewriting bios. Taking another course. All while avoiding the one thing that actually gets clients — connection. Your first clients don't come from perfection. They come from conversations. "Your first clients come from connection, not perfection." Stop Trying to Help Everyone If your message is vague, people won't feel seen. Instead, focus on: • One type of person • One clear problem You want someone to hear your message and immediately think: "That's me." "When we try to help everyone, your message gets weak and vague… pick one type of person and one main problem." Keep Your Offer Simple You don't need a complicated program to start. Your first offer can be: • A 4-week coaching package • A 6-week jumpstart • A single intensive • A beta offer The goal is not perfection. The goal is experience, results, and momentum. "The goal is not to create your forever offer… it's to create an offer that helps someone get a result." Your First Clients Are Already Around You Most people overcomplicate this part. Your first clients are likely: • Friends • Family • Followers • People already watching you These are the easiest people to start with because trust already exists. "It's most likely the people who know you… these are the easiest people to start with." You Have to Tell People You're Open This is where many coaches drop the ball. They post content — but never actually say: "I'm taking clients." You need to be clear. You need to invite. You need to lead. "People cannot hire you if they don't know you exist." Conversations Close Clients Content builds awareness. But conversations build trust and close clients. This looks like: • Responding to comments • Messaging people back • Asking questions • Inviting people to calls "Content can open the door, but conversations close the gap." Don't Ignore Offline Opportunities Not everything happens online. Some of your fastest wins can come from: • Local events • Workshops • Networking • Conversations in real life Sometimes the quickest way to sign a client is to stop hiding behind your phone. You Have to Ask At some point, you need to make an offer. Not pushy. Not salesy. Just clear. Examples: • "I'm opening 3 spots…" • "I'm looking for women who want support with…" • "Send me the word START…" "Your first three clients are not going to come from hoping people figure it out." Your First Clients Are Data Your first clients help you learn: • What people actually need • How they talk about their problems • What objections come up • How to refine your offer They are not meant to be perfect. They are part of the process. "They're feedback, data, market research, and proof of concept." Final Thoughts If you've been waiting to feel ready… Waiting for more followers… Waiting for everything to be perfect… You don't need to wait. You need to start. Your first three clients are already within reach — through the conversations you haven't started yet. "Messy action will build your business faster than perfection ever will."

#541 Quick Tip: This Looks Productive, But It's Actually a Trap

Straight Talk with Sally

In this quick tip episode of Strategy with Sally, Sally unpacks the productivity trap of constant tweaking — the endless adjusting of websites, sales pages, niches, and systems that feels responsible but is often just avoidance in disguise. Tweaking keeps you busy and comfortable because it delays the vulnerable moment of putting your work out into the world where people can see it, react to it, and have opinions about it. Real progress requires a decision, a commitment, and a line in the sand — and that's uncomfortable. Instead of polishing another sentence or reworking something that's already good enough, Sally challenges you to ask yourself one honest question: what am I avoiding finishing or committing to? Because clarity doesn't come from more thinking; it comes from feedback. "Done" doesn't mean perfect — it means visible, testable, and learnable. Progress actually works like this: done leads to feedback, feedback leads to iteration, and iteration builds momentum. So if it's good enough, ship it, share it, and let it be real — you can always refine later, but only after it's out there.   Stay Connected & Get Exclusive Access: Join the Private OmniSAM Community: omnisam.com.au/gsdgroup Facebook Group: gsdfb.omnisam.com.au Follow on Facebook: facebook.com/sallysparkscousins Watch the Live Stream & Subscribe for More Updates: OmniSAM YouTube: youtube.com/@omnisamsoftware Sally Sparks-Cousins YouTube: youtube.com/@sallysparkscousins

If your sales have slowed down, your first thought might be:“It's the market.”“People aren't spending.”“My offer isn't working anymore.” But what I've seen again and again is that what looks like a sales slump is rarely about demand. It's usually about focus. In this episode, I'm unpacking what's actually happening when revenue dips — and why most business owners respond in ways that make it worse. Panic pivoting. Changing offers. Tweaking prices. Posting more. Discounting. When in reality, the issue is often far simpler — and far more within your control. The real risk in business isn't failure. It's drift. In this bite-sized Inside Out episode, I explore why most founders don't stall because they try and fail — they stall because they stay safe.   Planning feels responsible. Tweaking feels productive. Research feels strategic. But often, it's hesitation disguised as preparation. Growth requires exposure. Open water. Movement. The danger isn't being out there and getting it wrong. The danger is drifting in the harbour — slowly postponing the very thing that would move you forward. If there's a launch you're delaying, a call you're avoiding, or a step you keep pushing to "next week," this episode is your reminder. Drift feels harmless. Until it isn't. What harbour are you currently sitting in?

Overcorrection & Perfectionism: Your Greatest Liability or Your Scaling Edge?Perfectionism gets a bad reputation. And honestly? Sometimes it deserves it.In this episode, we're talking about the real relationship women have with overcorrection and perfectionism in business especially when it comes to content creation, offer building, and visibility.Because here's the truth:For high-capacity women, overcorrection isn't random. It's a trauma response. It's a control strategy. It's a safety mechanism. It shows up as: • Rewriting the caption 12 times • Refilming the reel because your voice cracked • Delaying the launch because it's “not ready yet” • Tweaking the offer again instead of selling itAnd if you're not careful? It becomes the bane of your existence. You stall. You hesitate. You self-edit your power. But here's the reframe:That same instinct to refine, improve, optimize, and tighten? That's also what creates elite execution. That's what builds clean systems. That's what sharpens messaging. That's what scales companies fast and far.In this episode, I'm breaking down: • When overcorrection is fear… and when it's mastery • How perfectionism sabotages visibility • How to use refinement as a precision tool instead of a procrastination tactic • The mindset shift that turns “never enough” into “continuously optimized”If you're a woman building something big and you feel caught between high standards and self-sabotage this conversation will change the way you see yourself.Your perfectionism isn't the problem. how you weild it is.

But when scores start steering our choices, we trade meaning for metrics—and investing gets harder, not easier. We take you inside a listener-recommended book on gamification and value capture, then connect its insights to practical retirement planning, rebalancing discipline, and the craft of building portfolios that can handle ambiguity.First, we break down a simple framework to resist metric addiction: practice metric mindfulness, guard “opaque” spaces where you don't track every moment, and treat numbers as disposable tools. That shift matters for health, career, and especially money. Chasing precision in complex markets leads to false confidence and needless anxiety; aiming for ballparks and using satisficing rules keeps you steady. From there, we dive into performance and positioning. While large growth stalls, small cap value, gold, commodities, and managed futures are pulling their weight. We share how diversified, risk-parity style allocations harness those uncorrelated trends without prediction—and why selling strength into rebalancing is the quiet edge that compounds over time. You'll also hear clear, practical guidance on tax location and cash: put growth in Roth accounts, anchor bonds in tax-deferred space, keep cash lean if you have flexible liquidity, and rebalance across accounts at the household level.Underneath the tickers is a broader life stance. Money, power, and fame are easy to count and easy to chase. Relationships, time autonomy, and meaningful work resist scoring yet deliver the lasting returns. Let numbers serve your purpose, not replace it. If you're ready to think beyond dashboards and build a portfolio—and a life—built for uncertainty, you'll feel right at home.Enjoy the conversation? In this reflective episode of Honey Bee Obscura, Jim Tew explores what it really means to call ourselves “beekeepers.” After more than fifty years with bees, Jim questions whether we truly “keep” them—or if we're simply borrowing space in their world. He draws comparisons to birdhouses, backyard chickens, and monarch butterflies, observing that bees remain fundamentally wild, even when living in our boxes. Jim shares personal experiences of stepping back from active management for several years, allowing colonies to survive—or not—on their own terms. This shift prompts him to consider the limits of human control in beekeeping, especially in the face of challenges like Varroa mites. Are we managing bees, or just tweaking their natural behaviors to fit our needs for honey, pollination, and wax? This plain talk conversation invites listeners to rethink their relationship with honey bees and reflect on where “keeping” ends and nature begins. ______________________ Thanks to Betterbee for sponsoring today's episode. You know that meme… Charlie Day, crazed look, wall of string, pointing at chaos? That's the typical freelancer trying to make a decision. A simple pricing change? You're mapping out lifetime value, market benchmarks, “CFO-level cost abstractions” (whatever the hell that means). Meanwhile, someone else just ran a quick test, got a client, and moved on. While one person's “trying to decide on a niche”… Another one has tested 5 different offers and actually figured out what will sell. If you've been stuck in “procrasturbation”… Tweaking your logo. Updating your website. Getting ready to get ready… Instead of launching offers, testing, having conversations, and figuring it out by failing fast… Listen to THIS EPISODE now. And then DO SOMETHING. Move fast. Speed is king. And indecision is the tax you're paying. There's a specific reason I'm bringing this up now… Because I get so mad when I see freelancers getting stuck on this stuff when there is a simple path that leads directly to the 3% of clients who are ready to hire you right now.
