Nicotine use is rising in young people Nicotine use among youth and young adults is rising according to the Centers for Disease Control with nicotine pouch use by people under 21 nearly quadrupling from 2022 to 2025. Nicotine is the highly addictive chemical stimulant found in tobacco. In 2024, almost 8% of high schoolers said they had used an e-cigarette in the past month, and more than 2% had used nicotine pouches. Some place the rise in use on health influencers on social media, who say nicotine has natural benefits such as better focus or claim it can prevent Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. Others say nicotine is a better alternative to smoking tobacco, since its non-carcinogenic and comes in fun flavors like mint and now fruit, approved by the Food and Drug Administration last month. Even U.S. Health and Human Services director Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said last year that nicotine pouches are "probably the safest way to consume nicotine." But is there any safe way to consume nicotine? Many health experts are concerned about this reframing, and its impact on young people. On Thursday's "Sound of Ideas," we'll ask local public health officials about this trend and ask about the role of nicotine on our health. Guests:- David Margolius, M.D., Public Health Director, City of Cleveland- Erika Trapl, Ph.D., Behavioral Epidemiologist & Professor, Case Western Reserve University- Wendy Hyde, Ohio Regional Director, Preventing Tobacco Addiction Foundation/Tobacco21 & Assistant Professor, Baldwin Wallace University- Ernest Williams, Barber, Polished Professionals & Graduate, Freedom From Smoking The Menu: Food Trucks Summer is underway, and communities are coming together for neighborhood celebrations, outdoor events and local festivals. The question of whether Republicans could be elected while touting amnesty is currently a flashpoint of intense debate, particularly surrounding the Dignity Act (or DIGNIDAD Act). Introduced by Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL), the bill proposes a "middle ground" where long-term undocumented immigrants can earn a renewable "Dignity Status" by paying restitution fees (around $5,000–$7,000) and passing background checks. While Salazar argues this is a common-sense solution for the economy that avoids "mass amnesty" by not offering a direct path to citizenship, she has faced fierce backlash from conservative colleagues and media figures who label the bill a "betrayal" of the GOP's 2024 platform of mass deportations. Critics warn that supporting such measures could lead to primary challenges in 2026, as significant portions of the Republican base remain staunchly opposed to any form of legal status for those who entered the country illegally

The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 6th and final study session on Char Adams' Black-Owned: The Revolutionary Life of the Black Bookstore. Published at the end of 2025, Adams' new book made a number of lists for top books of the year. Touted as an "award-winning journalist, editor, and storyteller for NBC News, known for her work on race, identity, and inequitable systems," Adams is a lovely black female, Victim of Racism. Specifically, Adams investigates how black people have responded to the System of White Supremacy through the lens of bookstore ownership. C.O.W.S.'s listeners should know that White Supremacists have invested immense time and energy to ensure that black people do not read or have access to books. Last week, we learned about how the 2000's signaled massive challenges for black bookstores with more competition from online and large bookstore chains. Then, the financial downturn of 2008 devastated many White and non-white bookstore owners. Karibu Books and Eso Won Books both eventually closed. But, the Sankofa Video Books & Café was able to fight off their $30,000 tax debt, and remains in business today. Adams says that many black bookstore saw a boon during the Racial protests of 2010s - such the police shootings of Michael Brown Jr., Eric Garner, & Rekia Boyd as well as the 2012 murder of Trayvon Martin. This book concludes with a massive emphasis on Anti-Sex/LGBTQ activities. RuPaul and George M. Johnson's 'All Boys Aren't Blue,' - which is a so-called manifesto about being a "queer" black person, are celebrated. Adams documents some of the responses to the murders of George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery, which included a rash of buying books related to Racism and new book clubs. Interestingly, all of the new reading groups mentioned were formed by and for black females. Listeners and Gus question if this book, though filled with very important information, earns an 'F' letter grade for omitting Dr. Frances Cress Welsing and Neely Fuller Jr. and then glazing readers with Anti-Sex in the conclusion. #COINTELPRO #TheCOWS17Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE 564943#
The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 5th study session on Char Adams' Black-Owned: The Revolutionary Life of the Black Bookstore. Published at the end of 2025, Adams' new book made a number of lists for top books of the year. Touted as an "award-winning journalist, editor, and storyteller for NBC News, known for her work on race, identity, and inequitable systems," Adams is a lovely black female, Victim of Racism. This may be the first to seriously investigate the history of bookstores operated by people classified as black in the area of the world known as the US. Specifically, Adams investigates how black people have responded to the System of White Supremacy through the lens of bookstores ownership. C.O.W.S. listeners should know that White Supremacists have invested immense time and energy to ensure that black people do not read or have access to books. Last week, we learned about Eso Won Books in Los Angeles and Karibu Books in Maryland. Adams explained the lull in black bookstores following the 1970's and the end of the so-called Civil Rights Era. Fictional romance novels, the Oprah Winfrey Book Club, and a new generation of mostly black female authors such as Terry McMillan, Sister Souljah, bell hooks, Iyanla Vanzant, Dr. Shahrazad Ali, and E. Lynn Harris (black dude), sparked a resurgence of black literature at the close of the 20th century. Most of these books minimized focus on the System of White Supremacy and instead centered on sexual activity and "gender wars." Gus T. and listeners find it increasingly suspicious that Dr. Frances Cress Welsing and Neely Fuller Jr. are both excluded from this book, even though they each made countless appearances at many of the black bookstores mentioned by Adams. #COINTELPRO #TheCOWS17Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE 564943#

Specifically, Adams investigates how black people have responded to the System of White Supremacy through the lens of bookstores ownership. C.O.W.S. listeners should know that White Supremacists have invested immense time and energy to ensure that black people do not read or have access to books. So, black bookstores must be heavily targeted places. Last week, we discussed the Tree of Life Bookstore in Harlem and the Hue-Man Experience Bookstore in Denver. A central theme of this text is that black bookstore operators were motivated to provide books for black children. Importantly, last week Adams told us that a significant pattern is that black females often read fictional romance novels - like Terry McMillan's Waiting To Exhale, while black males mostly read non-fiction works of history. Gus notes that many of the fictional novels most popular with black females often omit the System of White Supremacy while highlighting black males as feverish, misogynistic ogres. #COINTELPRO #TheCOWS16Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE 564943#
Leftist media outlets take an extremely opportunistic approach to covering the intersection of religion and politics. They're appalled at religion when it impedes their agenda, but they gush over religious figures when they align with their talking points. On Jan. 19, New York Times religion reporter Ruth Graham penned a story headlined “Top Catholic Clerics Denounce U.S. Foreign Policy.” Three Catholic cardinals — Blase Cupich of Chicago, Joseph Tobin of Newark, and Robert McElroy of Washington, D.C. — put out a statement critical of President Donald Trump's international policies. “Our country's moral role in confronting evil around the world, sustaining...Article Link

DHEA was first identified in 1931 by Dr. Adolf Butenandt, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1939. Frequently called “the anti-aging hormone”, DHEA is a base for more than 50 hormones that are smaller or more specific carbon chain molecules in human biochemistry. As a precursor for all estrogenic and androgenic hormones, humans make DHEA naturally from birth. It's now well established that chronic stress leads to an out-pouring of cortisol and with that, a gradual depletion of DHEA. DHEA is a prohormone – a natural building block for hormones our bodies make.Over time, this hormonal imbalance can lead to brain fog, thinning bones, weight gain, low sex drive and poor Immune function.Maintaining proper DHEA levels in the body is important to your overall health and may lead to Increased energy, enhanced mood and focus, sound sleep, and better letting skin.Guest: Joining us today is Hugh Woodward, He is the President of Health2Go, Inc the makers of Twist 25 DHEA cream. This first-ever edition of Hot Takes is about a major move in Canada's energy future…and what it means for climate, cities, and the promises made to hold fossil fuel giants accountable. As Canadian cities race toward net zero, their efforts are being fundamentally threatened by a high stakes federal agreement known as "The Grand Bargain": a political compromise on behalf of the Mark Carney government to build a new pipeline that would transport diluted bitumen from the Alberta oil sands westward across the rocky mountains to the British Columbia coast.Touted as a bridge to a clean energy future, we go behind the spin to explore the real facts behind this project - and lay bare the reasons many are opposed to this doubling down on promises made by the fossil fuel industry…promises that historically haven't been worth the paper they're written on.Featured guests:Hon. Years ago in Juarez, Mexico, I wandered into a carnival sideshow that flabbergasted this Texas country boy. Stumbling out, I murmured: “Now I've seen everything… and then some.” But now, decades later, I've been even more stupefied by the news that convicted Wall Street swindler Michael Milken has just opened his own bizarre freak show in Washington, DC.Touted as a “tourist attraction,” his museum glorifies predatory capitalists (like him), hailing them as heroic American geniuses! The infamous junk-bond scammer grandiosely labels his monument the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream. It's located right across the street from the White House (though it's rumored that even his buddy Trump considered Michael's “Monument to Mammon” to be too explicitly obscene to attach it directly to the East Wing). In a perverse bit of symbolism, the thing occupies the former headquarters of a bank that was forced to close 20 years ago because of a money-laundering scandal. How's that for Karma? But, to gloss over such ugliness, Milken has gilded his legacy mausoleum with Trumpian gold. The rooms, draperies, furniture – and even a fake tree in the atrium – all gleam with gold leaf, emphasizing Milken's credo that the goal of life is money… and the power to get it.Educational exhibits include an interactive game on compound interest, as well as a display of Mike's high school cheerleading uniform. Missing, though, is any mention of the full presidential pardon this avaricious criminal wrangled from Trump in 2020, letting the racketeer escape prison for stealing a billion dollars from people who trusted him.Still, if you visit his Washington freak show, the gift shop offers a memento that sums up his life: A $22 Milken money clip.Jim Hightower's Lowdown is a reader-supported publication. Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are here to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Jaws.Jaws is a thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg, based on the bestselling novel by Peter Benchley. Benchley co-wrote the screenplay with Carl Gottlieb. It opened in theaters on June 20, 1975.The movie follows a series of shark attacks on Amity Island. Mayor Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) insists the beach stays open because Amity Island depends on the tourism. Police Chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) must kill the shark with help of oceanographer Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and shark hunter Quint (Robert Shaw).Touted as the original summer blockbuster, Jaws was the highest grossing film in history until the release of Star Wars. It was the first film to gross $100 million at the U.S. box office. While Jaws had a notably wide release and a large marketing campaign, most cinemas in the U.S. had only one screen at the time. The film won Oscars for John Williams' iconic score, Best Sound, and Best Film Editing. It was nominated for Best Picture but not Best Director. The movie spawned three sequels.Aaron and Josh talk about their history with Jaws before going into the plot, characters, score, and effects. For the first time in a quarter-century, Congress passed a sweeping $9.4 billion rescission package, marking a pivotal shift toward fiscal conservatism. With support from Senate Republicans and former President Trump, the bill eliminates funding for NPR, foreign aid, and climate programs, reclaiming unused pandemic and infrastructure funds. Touted by conservatives as a blow to bloated bureaucracy and left-wing agendas, the measure is seen as the first step in dismantling the administrative state. Critics argue the cuts are largely symbolic—but House Speaker Mike Johnson promises this is just the beginning.

And in recent weeks and months the Salford-born attacking midfielder has made giant leaps, influencing games and scoring goals whether starting or coming on from the bench. His hat-trick against Salford City earlier this month is already a highlight in what McAtee hopes will be a long time at the Club, while he's also notched his first Champions League and Premier League strikes for City this term. In this chat with George Kelsey and Nedum Onuoha, McAtee details his journey so far and the sporting heritage in his family. He also recounts how two very different campaigns on loan at Sheffield United - the first a Championship promotion and the second a Premier League relegation - have steeled him for the rollercoaster ride of a career in professional football. American neurologist Walter Jackson Freeman had refined Moniz's procedure and developed a non-surgical procedure that could be performed in a doctor's office, which he called a transorbital lobotomy. Freeman's procedure involved inserting a medical instrument similar to an icepick into the patient's orbital socket to sever the neural connections, without requiring surgery, hospital stays, and long recovery times. Touted as a quick, easy, and painless solution to everything from general malaise and occasional depression to schizophrenia and aggressive behavior, the procedure a go-to solution for the very complex psychological problems that have affected countless people for centuries. Unfortunately, while the procedure was effective for a small number of those who received a lobotomy, it was used indiscriminately, often without consideration for the increasingly disastrous outcomes.Today we talk about the tragic and disastrous lobotomy on Rosemary Kennedy and thousands more that occured after it.
