Bob, Dale and Craig talk about cigars and life. Plus a question of decor from Dan in Detroit. Some of the cigars discussed: Pinolero by AJ Fernandez, Cohiba Esplendidos and San Lotabo Oval Maduro; Pro Cigar - 2010 Cayacoa 5x50 Robusto From Cigar Clan magazine (a russian publication) The next instance can in good conscience reward prohibited in our editorial epithet "unique." These cigars will not find in the market, they were created especially for guests ProCigar 2011. The box says, "Guess who made the cigars." Inside - five cigars with the same black ribbon on each of them - one additional Bantu named cigars - in honor of the five leaders of the pre-Columbian America: Higüey, Guacanagarix, Guarionex, Cayacoa and Bohechio. Apart from inside a box of cigars can be detected liner, where guests asked to indicate which of the five companies (General Cigar, La Aurora, MATASA, Tabacalera de Garcia, Tabadom (Davidoff)) which has created a cigar. You could also fill the table Fortress / taste aromatic and give it all to the organizers. Participants whose answers match 100%, the organizers have promised to fully cover the cost of participation in the Festival in 2012. The lucky ones were two, both - from the U.S. Deep rich Colorado Maduro wrapper with dark thin veins and perfectly consistent color between them, Uniform marble head. Peppery (!) prelight tastes Initial flavors: Very toasty, Malt and cinnamon. First third opens up with overwhelming pepper and nicotine strength. Light bodied with strong flavors. Sharp (for me) but likely a treat for someone who enjoys a cigar at the pinnacle of balanced strength. Unique finish; it is long in the nasal cavity and on the hard palate but relatively short on the tongue. Reminds me of two different Fuente products - The aggresive peppery style strength of a FFOX with some of the complexities in common with a Casa Fuente. In the second third the body picked up to medium, the strength escalated in sharpness to the point that the smoke when held in my mouth actually stung my tongue. The cigar burned flawlessly and produced a perfectly white ash. Finish lengthens on the tongue considerably and slightly tingles. Still displays complexity of flavor. Tastes tarry on the palate now. Not drying at all. A relight and purge of tars resulted in a return of significant similarities to a Casa Fuente. I never taste marzipan, why is that? So I thought I would take minute to talk about taste and cigars. Tobacconist University has some additional information about taste that you may want to take advantage of. http://www.tobacconistuniversity.org/taste-college/index.asp First lets understand what taste is when it comes to something like cigars. This week the show was recorded live during the inaugural DogWatch Cigar Radio Herf at Tranquilo Cigars in Melbourne, Florida. A big thank you to Sean and Clarissa for hosting our event and providing some great food! We had great audience participation for this free-wheeling, non-structured show. Hear about this week's Cigar of the Week, the Merlion, from Barry Stein of Miami Cigar & Company. Tune in for Liz's blooper in the unbanded segment. Hear interviews from Wes Gensel of Monte Pascoal Cigars, Kevin Edmiston and Wade Berryhill of Orinoco Cigars, and Chris Edge of Dona Flor Cigars. Dan Tiant of El Tiante Cigars was unavoidably detained and couldn't make the show, but was there Saturday for the herf. The winner of the black Palio cutter this month is Chubno. In the 'We've Got Mail' segment, Steve Dorau asks about the proper etiquette for handling cigars before you them in a cigar shop and Craig Miller asks the guys about their favorite tastes in cigars. Check out the video of the show on U-Tube on the cigarmediatv channel or download the audio from I-Tunes. Bob, Dale, Craig and Executive Producer Liz had a blast meeting listeners who traveled to Melbourne for the herf and live show. It seems like the consensus is to make this a yearly event. This week, Bob and Dale talk about the latest legislative update from Cigar Rights of America, smoking in your car, the origins of Father's Day (thanks to Ron Barker of Cigar Volante for providing this info) and the upcoming DogWatch Herf in July. In the 'We've Got Mail' segment, Josh Freitas asks about Cuban cigar flavors; Roger Miller wants to know the ins and outs of storing sealed boxes of cigars and cellophane wrapped cigars; RH shares his recent experience with "tar leakage"; Shawn and his wife are expecting their first child and want to know Dale's and Bob's choices for a box purchase to distribute on the big day; and Steve Dorau asks about brown stains on his hands and lips from a recent cigar. Big Pete from Australia joins Bob and Dale to review the Cigar of the Week (COW), the Emilio AF2 Robusto. A big thank you to Tranquilo Cigars for providing this week's COW. David Zach and Dan Crouch join the live show to review this week's unbanded cigar, the Gran Habano Blue Label (thank you Dan for providing the unbanded). Cigar of the Week -Emilio AF-2 Robusto The AF2 blend, produced and blended by A.J. Fernandez is crafted from rich Nicaraguan fillers combined with the strength of Pennsylvania ligero and a beautiful Ecuadoran Habano Oscuro wrapper. These cigars are available in cabinet boxes of 20 in four sizes: Robusto, Toro, Torpedo, and BMF. What else have you been smokin' Dale? Rocky Patel Burn Special Reserve Robusto - 5” x 50 - First released in late Feb., the Burn by RP was developed for sale in all RP Lounges and is made at the Tobacalera Villa Cuba factory. Named for the Burn by Rocky Patel Lounges & dressed with two bands, the cigar is as attractive as it is delicious. A darkly fermented Ecuadorian grown Sumatra wrapper covers fillers & binder from Nicaragua. A rumor, as yet unconfirmed by this reporter yet from a good source, says that Dion Giolito helped with the blending of the cigar. It also comes in Toro (6” x 52) and a Titan (8.5” x 60) sizes. Lots of earthy, dark & rich flavors with more sweetness than one might expect. I found cocoa, cedar, molasses, stewed plums and nutmeg spice. Full bodied, full flavored and very well balanced. A luxurious cigar! Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 - What a disappointment after smoking the Burn a few days earlier! Not a bad cigar, but certainly not up to the high premium level of the Burn, in all categories. Construction was weak, as there was an underfilled portion about 2” in causing the cigar to tunnel. Flavors were OK, but not nearly as well balanced. The pepper was good, but far too strong over the core of leather, and masked most other minor flavors. The tobaccos didn’t seem nearly as well fermented. The cigar burned fast and tended to go out often. Macanudo Cru Royale Robusto - In our What Else segment last week, Jerry Cruz talked about how the new Partagas 1845 was a hit, where as the more recent Macanudo offerings didn’t hit the mark. I wanted to go back and compare, so I smoked the Cru Royale this week again after having not smoked it for several months. What else have you been smokin' Bob? Man O War Armada - $500 for a box of cigars, even a box of 32 cigars, is beyond most people's reach, including mine. Can a cigar really be worth $20? No, but the cigar and its accompanying box can be according to Man O’ War maker A.J. Fernandez and the pricing on the Armada. In the finest tradition of Gurhka, AJ has produced a cigar that, while providing artistic packaging and exceptional flavors, is just not practical for most cigar smokers. This cigar is a tasty elixir draped in a dark, toothy, Ecuador-Sumatra wrapper leaf that brings a full-frontal assault of flavor. Would I recommend them? - Yes. Would I buy them? - No. Emilio Cigars Grimalkin - Grimalkin is a unique blend, produced in Esteli, Nicaragua from carefully selected tobaccos. This cigar will be limited in quantity based on harvest conditions. Grimalkin cigars are available in 3 sizes: Robusto, Toro, and Torpedo, and come in cabinet style boxes of 25. Medium bodied and complex, Grimalkin is a complex cigar with several nuance flavors. It took me smoking a couple of them to really get the point but once I did I fell in love with them. Notes of pepper, raisins and a citrus sweetness combined with the texture of the smoke (not chewy but textured like work leather) make this an outstanding cigar in the true tradition of boutique cigars. What's my band? Thank you to Dan Crouch for providing this week's unbanded cigar, the Gran Habano Blue Label. Do you have a suggestion for the unbanded cigar of the week? This week, Bob, Dale and guest host Craig Schneider discuss several cigar-related topics, including the House Bill to protect premium cigars, California's Proposition 29, and the recent news that America's top wine expert, Alexander La Pratt, named the La Aurora Preferidos #2 as his favorite cigar. Jerry from Stogie Review joins the guys in the 'What Else I've Been Smokin' segment of the show. In the 'We've Got Mail" segment, Barry from Baltimore asks how you can identify specific brands in the AJ Fernandez Overruns available from Cigars International; Al Silva is curious why you would switch wrappers on cigars; Craig Schneider wonders what caused the bitter, tar-like flavor he experienced after a month-long hiatus from smoking; and Bruce Stark wants to know about dry boxing cigars. On the herf line, Big Pete from Australia reviews the Humo Jaguar. The Cigar of the Week (COW) is the Tatuaje Ambos Mundos No. 2 Robusto. Thank you to Tranquilo Cigars for providing this week's COW. This week we welcome Craig Schneider back for the biggest smoke ever on DogWatch Cigar Radio. The three of us exchanged cigars this week so we each have three cigars to review making for a total of nine reviews of 6 different cigars (do the math yourself, this one confused me). We also have mail from Palio contest winners, a request from a listener and a question for our team of experts. Cigars of the Week - Cigar of the Week: Bob – E.P Carillo Golosos Cigars Ring Gauge: 60 Length: 6.5 inches Shape: Toro Gordo Strength: Medium E.P Carillo Golosos Cigars - The creator and the man behind the famous cigar brand La Gloria Cubana has launch a new personal project and another fabulous cigar The E.P. Carillo. The filler in the EP Carillo cigar is a well aged 5 year old Dominican and Nicaraguan fillers that is bound and wrapped with a 3 year old Ecuadorian-grown Habano wrapper. This cigar is a medium bodied cigar that is characterized creamy flavors, and rich notes of pepper. Cigar of the Week: Dale - Mi Tierra Habano Ring Gauge: 60 Length:4.5” Shape/Name:Parejo - Grand Mi Tierra cigars are Dominican Puros, made from tobaccos grown on a single farm. Michael Munoz is the brand face of the line, but the cigars were developed in a joint venture with Jose Blanco. All the blend tobacco has been aged for 3 years and is covered in a silky Habano variety wrapper. A complex cigar with more spice then one might expect, especially right from the start. Rich and bold full flavors that keep the cigar very interesting throughout the experience. The body of the smoke is medium, and the strength level is above the typical Dominican profile. Cigar of the Week: Craig - Anonymous Ring Gauge:56 Length:6.375” Shape/Name:Parejo - Sublimes (roughly - Little short, little wide) This large cigar has a rustic Mexican San Andreas Seco skin on a body of tobacco coming from all one country. It brings a slightly sweet demeanor to the table with an interesting spicy core. It was released to slightly negative fanfare and never received the due I feel it deserved. In my opinion, it did not take off as a cigar enjoyed by the masses. That explains why I may like it, as my tastes tend to lean away from the trends of today. Strength, but with balance; the only way I’ll take it. Rearranging show dates! We are moving the the Nov 4 show to November 5 as Liz and I will be traveling that evening. _______________________________________________ We get Mail: Sometimes it takes a while.... Liz, Below is a copy of an email I tried to send on 15 JUL 11. I continued to listen to the podcast wondering if you ever received it. Bob & Dale, Thank you! Thank you for the selecting me as the May contest winner of the magnificent Palio cutter. I received it in the mail about two weeks ago and have used it for every cut on my cigars since. I was just getting ready to buy one when I listened to your podcast and heard I was selected; now I’ll have to buy a carbon fiber cutter. You mentioned on the podcast that you believed I was military and you was absolutely correct. I am a sergeant First Class in the Army stationed in Germany and recently returned home from Afghanistan. I am very new the good life of cigar smoking but thanks to your podcast (and the power of the internet), I have become educated quickly. Once again thank you for selecting me, for an incredible radio show, and for your support of the uniformed services. Keep up the great work! v/r SFC Tim Delaney More Mail: a call to our listeners DJ Shalifoe is looking for any retailers that still have pre-General Cigar CAO La Traviatas in stock. DJ writes: The old pre-GC Traviatas come with the CAO branded Boveda pack in the box whereas the post-GC CAOs do not. I'm partial to the Divino and Animados vitolas in either natural or maduro. The reason I want the older ones is that I find CAO cigars under General's ownership to have fallen off the cliff, so to speak. If any listener knows of a retailer with pre-GC Traviatas, send the info to theshow@cigarmedia.tv and we will pass it along. More Mail: Listener feedback John Magrisso to Liz after she followed up to see how he liked the Palio cutter he won in June Liz, I received the Palio cutter sometime at the very end of June and shot Bob an e-mail when upon its receipt. I've been very happy with it- it has lived up to all the accolades given on the show each week! As to the show, I've been listening for a number of years now, and though I'm not the most vocal listener, I look forward to it every week and thoroughly enjoy the sense of community it provides us cigar smokers (especially living here in Massachusetts, where I'll get dirty looks just for smoking on my own front steps)! So thank you all! John Legislative Update Venezuela has annulled by decree an anti-smoking law, which prohibits tobacco use in public places and offices a day after enforcement. Venezuela's Ministry of Health announced its new decision just a day after the anti-smoking law was printed in the Official Gazette. According to the new legislation, smoking was banned in public spaces, cafes, public toilets, dining halls and joined buildings. The new law was planned to be implemented after three months, said a Press TV correspondent. Get the full story Craig: Funny how Venezuela’s ban comes right on the heals of their dictator’s struggle with cancer. Wait... I’ve read this again. So they’re annulling the legislation? Craig’s Esencia Contest #1 - Adam Zed Esencia Canonazo Cut - took off just the cap to produce a good draw. Not tight, but almost perfect. Pre-light aroma - I don't do this anymore as the smells might get mixed when I have a lot of singles in the same area. Apperance - Nice color, firm but not hard body. The cap was almost invisible, it was so well placed and pressed into the crown. Smoke time - 2 hours on the nose Drink - Pepsi and ice. Also a bottle of water if I want to cleanse well. Light - Toasted end with triple torch until an ember appears then draw a couple times with a little bit of heat to the end of the cigar. I decided to break this stick into quarters instead of the typical thirds...no reason, just thought it would work, and it did. First few puffs ( I don't use these to determine the whole first quarter ) - Big kick to the back of the throat. A lot of black pepper that I get from Nica tobacco. Very heavy. First quarter - After the first 4-6 pulls, the cigar settled down. I immidiately thought of Illusione MK. Smooth ! The back of throat raspiness went away immidiately. Black pepper lingers for a minute after expelling smoke. Pallet filling, great. The burn is great, straight and not pulling inside at all. The smoke at this point is drying my mouth with every puff, but making me salivate at the same time...I almost equate this to the experience of an almond when you first put it in your mouth, it is drying your mouth, but making you salivate at the same time. There is an underlying peaty/ earthiness that comes in only after smoke is expelled and taste lingers. At this point, it reminds me the only H. Upmann Mag 50 I have had, wonderful ! Second quarter - Started developing a white pepper flavor that I absolutely love, I only get this in T52 Toros and it is the flavor I always search for. Still a drying effect with the smoke in my mouth at the sides, almost like red wine tannins when you first take a drink and it gives you that "bite" at the back sides of your mouth. Still smooth. There is a mineral, almost metallic, taste that comes in now that works well with cigars on the finish. Third quarter - Settled out now to a lush white pepper flavor predominantly filling the pallet. Still a mineral feeling/taste that works. The body now goes from a steady medium, to medium-full as the smoke seems to get richer and thicker. Now I am getting a roasted deep tobacco flavor at the end of this quarter that fills out my missing piece for what I look for in a great cigar. MMMM ! White pepper and roasted tobacco complement each other so well because they don't bombard your pallet, but complement the experience. Last quarter - Same tastes at the beginning, but as I get deeper in, the roasted flavor starts to dominate. The flavor and smoke completely coat the mouth. I know when I blow smoke out and it becomes a giant white/grey cloud that floats in the air outside like a cloud, that it has now transcended into full bodied. The white pepper subsided and became a creamy roasted tobacco ending ... oh wow ! Great finish. I don't usually smoke cigars until I littlerally burn my fingers, most of the time I smoke them down to about an inch, but if the smoke is still cool enough and has flavors other than tar, I tend to incure short term pain for long term gain. I have only done this once, with a Padron Maduro. I highly recommend these cigars, and would buy more to lay them away for a little bit to see if that mineral taste would subside a little bit, as it was the only thing that wasn't helping earlier, but that mineral taste was not bad in any way. Now for the non-technical of this email; I love these cigars, and recommend them to as many people as I can. I have given them away to people, even though it is very hard for me to find them as the retailers are not willing to ship up here, and also turned people onto smoking these wonderful beauties. I have had the Lancero, Canonazo, Robusto, and Corona Extra's. My preferance is the robusto's as the blend just "fits". It is funny that when I ordered some cigars the last time, my friend who goes down across the border to pick them up for me and bring them back across to ship here informed me of how he had been looking for Esencias for a while as well. He was so happy to know where to get them after we discussed my source; Fullers Pullers. He was even happier when he was gifted a 5 pack of cigars heh. As far as my "experience" with Esencias, I cannot say that I have smoked them with anyone else at the same time, or done anything wild with them anywhere as I have just been smoking them for a few months now, but what I can say is that my "experience" with Marc of Brothers of the Leaf LLC has been fantastic ! He has treated me well, answered a few questions I have asked in a timely manor, sent me a couple cigars to start me off in down the road of ever-expanding credit card debt, and seems to be doing well at maintaining a great standard on his cigars. As a consumer, I cannot ask for much more from a brand owner....well I guess I could ask him to come up here to the frozen north for a shop event .......... but somehow I highly doubt that :/ Thanks Craig for reading this long-ass email, I am just so happy that I finally found a way to get these cigars up here, even though there are a bunch of hoops to jump through. #2 Ralph from Connecticut (Ralph Purificato) On Mon, Oct 3, 2011 at 10:36 AM, Ralph Purificato wrote: Hey guys. Long time podcast listener who went to the CRA website to support the Traditional Cigar Manufacturing and Small Business Jobs Preservation Act. Unfortunately the support in CT seem to fall on deaf ears as you can see below. My response from Senator Blumenthal was the same as from Mr. Leiberman. Just wanted to pass this on and see if we could make a little more noise in Connecticut to let our "representatives" know that consenting adults would like to make their own choices on how we spend our time and money. I also wanted to take the last half of this email to talk about Esencia cigars for Craig's contest. I still consider myself a "new" cigar smoker though I have been enjoying cigars for close to 10 years. It started when I was 18 and a friend and I were given cigars by an older relative. From that point on we've always frequented our local smoke shop, The Owl Shop in New Haven CT. Up until about 2 years ago I never bothered to try and pick out flavors and a cigar simply being smooth was my main criteria. Now since paying more attention and listening to podcasts and reviews I am enjoying cigars more than ever. With that being said, I finally picked up an Esencia cigar last week and enjoyed it on my porch with a glass of water. The first thing that hit me on the first few puffs was gingerbread. As I smoked the cigar more and tried to pick out the individual flavors, I found that the spice and cedar woody flavors I picked out combined to make that initial "gingerbread" that hit me initially. I really enjoyed this cigar and it seemed to fit the fall season that's starting here. The burn was also terrific and the cigar smoked great down to the nub. I will definitely be picking up more of these and really enjoyed it. -- Ralph from Connecticut #3 Dan Crouch WINNER - He shared the experience with another. I gotta say I never thought I would have an Esencia cigar in my life (or any super premium for that matter). There are no Brick and Mortars in the area and to be honest they are really not in my price bracket. However, due to the kindness of Marc Aub I received a few samples and now I am hooked. The cigar smells as good as it smokes and that is amazing. All have been smooth and had a nice touch of sweetness along with hints of pepper in the retro. I even gave one of the few to my dad and he just could not believe how smooth it was. Now I am saving my change in hopes of buying a box should I ever get up to the city (Chicago). #4 Charlie Platt from Springdale AR Some of the best NCCs in my man cave! I tried these on recommendation of Bob and Dale. Completely satisfied! A rich and complex smoke. Great work BOTL. Charlie Platt What's My Band? - This week we have three unbanded cigars, one from each of the hosts.. Bob: Dales unbanded (Famous Nicaraguan 7000): Great leather with a slight sweet spice, I enjoyed this cigar tremendously. Now I guess I have to buy some. Craig (Craigs own blend): unbanded was the best constructed lancero I had had for some time. But the tste did not quite live up to the construction all the way through. Craig: From Dale (Famous Nicaraguan 7000): 5x50 Prelight - No tingle, slight sweet spice; cinnamon? Slight Barn funk. Round, like it was from a cabinet or SBN cedar box packed loosely. Curious if it was put in cellophane to fool us or just an older cigar that has lost some shape. Oil lines where the cigar was touched by somethign else for an extended period. 1st 3rd - Immediate Earth & citrus sweetness. made me think of a royal Corona then, naturally of a Monte pascal. Little tangy sweetness similar to the Montecristo fruity tang. Overall, despite having the sweet Cuban flavors, the sweetness was more Nicaraguan in how it came across. More zing than Twang. Med Body (3/5) - Med/Strong Strength (3.5/5) Reminds me of the RP 15th at this point but stronger 2nd 3rd - Deepenign up in Flavors & continuing w/ med/high strength (4/5) Slight bready component - Good. Think this might be a blend instead of a Puro. Turning sugary sweet with less deep/dark flavors. The bread, sugar, and accompanying 1942 Tequila make a wonderful cookie flavor. Starts dropping strength back down to ⅗. Estelian sweetness, like Pepin gets out of his balsy Nic flavors. Like a JJ or a Black label 3rd 3rd - Sweet tang; more Esteli-an flavors. Less strength than 1st third, (who did we meet that positions leaves “backward”? Stalk than tip? They mentioned consistant flavor & strength.) This is so different from that idea. But, it behaves as if it was opposite traditional flavor/strength progression. Odd. It should be getting stronger if it was normal & staying the same if it was backward... Overall - Good, too much nicotine for an anytime smoke for me. Finished more to my preferred strength but started w/ more complexity & depth of flavor. Serie JJ? No real idea. From Bob (blended dring a Cigar Tourism trip in 2011): 6-1/8”x51 Parejo Prelight: Barely any wrapper aroma; loads of Saffron & paprika like smoke off of the filler. Very, very unique for a cigar to have this distinct savory spice flavor. Pretty wrapper with a funky cap. I didn’t cut this cigar, I peeled the simple cap off & separated the binder leaf below. Looks a lot like an Equadorian wrapper from the stuff La Aurora puts out but the sizes don’t match their production. 1st Third: Deep, rich flavors; cedary, caramel. Tastes immediately of both Jalapa Nicaraguan tobacco & Olor (?) Dominican. Nice mix of flavors 2nd Third: Sweet creamy depth that has evolved from the Nicaraguan base of initial flavors. Tastes like the sweetness off of a Habano wrapper. Could this be a La Reloba Habano? What happened to the Dominican notes? The appearance continues to shine with oils coming to the surface of this thick wrapper. Almost corojo leathery feel without the appearance. Beautiful veining, color consistency & oils. More sweet flavor now turning tart & tangy like sorbet Final Third: Buttery sweetness from the Creamy 2nd third with a wonderful grain. Still woody but a bit softer in how it comes across. Not as much body as initially and the flavors have gotten a little “easier” on the palate. Full flavored & still complex. I really enjoy this stick. Could it be all Nicaraguan or is there more to it? I would say no stronger than 3 /5 with an equivalent body. Great smoke. La Reloba? No real idea. Palio Cutter Contest: The September winner of a silver Palio cutter is Dan Lawson from Louisana. For October's contest, we are looking for photos of you and your friends enjoying cigars. Send your entry to theshow@cigarmedia.tv. Please include your mailing address with your entry and type "Palio" on the subject line. Do you have a suggestion for the unbanded cigar of the week? Every week Bob and Dale include an “unbanded cigar” segment in their show in which they smoke a cigar without any markings and give their honest opinions. Bob then opens a sealed envelope and discovers the cigar’s name and manufacturer. If you have suggestions for the "What's My Band?" segment, please send them to liz@cigarmedia.tv. (Don't forget to include your mailing address and type "Palio" on the subject line.) All questions and facts will be discussed on the DogWatch show and one will be randomly selected as the winner. Remember you must re-enter each month to be eligible to win. May's contest winner of a black Palio cutter is Officer Paul.Cigar of the Week -Pinar Del Rio Toro Capa MaduraThe medium-bodied Pinar Del Rio (PDR) 1878 Cubano Especial Capa Madura cigar was created by Abraham Flores using a dark, triple-fermented Arapiraca Maduro wrapper from Brazil, Criollo 98 binder from the Dominican Republic, and a blended filler of Nicaraguan and Dominican Republic origin - all grown from Cuban seed. The very reasonably priced PDR 1878 Cubano Especial Capa Madura is well constructed and finished with a beautiful pigtail cap. The cigar's flavors are subtle with notes of sweetness, earthiness, and spice, and the smoke it produces at rest and in play is voluminous. What else have you been smokin' Dale?Padron Serie 1926 80th Perfecto Maduro - 6.75” x 54 - Released to celebrate the 80th birthday of Jose Orlando Padron, these perfect perfectos (the first production cigar of this shape for Padron) are the ultimate in Padron goodness! At about $30 per stick ($240 in boxes of 8 cigars) these would be a celebratory cigar for me, and I smoked this one (which was gifted from Mark Neff) on Memorial day in tribute to those who have fallen to allow me the freedom to smoke fine cigars. A full bodied cigar, the smoke is dense and chewy. Flavors are typical of the 1926 Serie - Cocoa, cream, coffee, and muted exotic spices (nutmeg, cinnamon) over an earthy, leather core- but even richer. Perfect construction, perfect draw and tons of smoke with a heady room aroma. The finish lingers and points out the extremely well aged tobaccos. In the last 3rd, the flavors all become enhanced leading to a full-on happy dance of the palate. I never thought I’d find a cigar I like better then the Padron Serie 1926 #9 Maduro, but this is all that and more!Partagas 1845 - The newest release from General Cigar, Partagas 1845 is a line extension with an old heritage and a new blend. They describe it as full flavored & medium bodied with hints of cocoa and coffee. The blend is Dominican Piloto Cubano and Nicaraguan tobaccos from 3 different regions. Some of the filler is aged in Dominican Rum barrels. The binder is Connecticut grown Habano and the wrapper is Ecuadorian grown Habano from the Viso priming. I tried 3 different sizes this week - Corona Extra (4.5 x 46), Robusto (5.5 x 49) & Gigante (6.0 x 60). It also is available in a Double Corona (7.25 x 54). I really like this blend, and prefer it far above the original Partagas blend with the Cameroon wrapper. Much richer with some nice sweetness. I did find some coffee & cocoa flavors, along with toasted nuts. A touch of mineral and citrus came and went every now & then. I did find it to be medium bodied and enjoyed all 3 sizes, with the Corona Extra hitting my palate the best. It had a touch more savoriness. Now if they would just put it out in a Corona Gorda size......What else have you been smokin' Bob?Pinar del Rio PDR 1878 Reserva Dominicana - Like rafting down a river of Nestle's chocolate with its lightness and slight sweetness that really brings out the best of the blend.Pinar del Rio Small Batch Reserve Cubra Habano - Abe Flores is a quiet man with an infectious laugh. His quiet ways may hide his expertise in blending fine cigars but when he puts out product like this, the world will soon shout his name. The best PDR to date, complex flavors of leather, salt, sweetness and a fine nuttiness to balance the acidity. One incredible cigar.Torano 1959 Exodus - Torano is still making top notch cigars in its quiet way. Not flashy but a really smooth cigar with lots of leather and some hints of nuttiness and slight acidity. What's my band?Thank you to Scott Rohrer for providing this week's unbanded cigar, the J. Fuego 777 Maduro Corona.Do you have a suggestion for the unbanded cigar of the week? Cigar of the Week - Declaration by Brad Mayo at Jameson Cigars A showcase of Dominican tobaccos, Declaration features an aged Habano ’98 wrapper paired with a Criollo ’98 binder and select filler tobaccos from the prime growing regions of the Dominican Republic. The unabashed enthusiast can expect deep, bold flavors and a memorable, medium-full bodied smoking experience. Suggested Retail Range – $6.95-$8.65 per cigar Manufactured at Tabacalera LaAlianza S.A., Santiago, Dominican Republic What else have you been smokin' Dale? Trinidad Coloniales - 130 mm (5.12”) x 44 - For my money, one of the most refined and well balanced Habanos in a small format. Creamy coffee, light chocolate, sandelwood and mild exotic spices notes. Medium bodied smoke with a long finish. Be sure to sip on these to keep them cool and be able to notice all the complexity. Some of the fainter flavors you may pick up are lemon citrus, hazelnuts, yeast, …..... Oliva Serie V Lancero - 7” x 38 - Nicaraguan puro with a Habano Sungrown wrapper that is oily exquisite! Coffee, spice, cocoa and roasted grain flavors in a bold & smooth smoke. Full bodied, full flavored and one of the more affordable priced Serie V sizes. Alec Bradley Prensado Corona Gorda - 5.6” x 46 - Nicaragua & Honduran tobaccos done right! Talked about these in other sizes recently, so I wanted to smoke the Corona Gorda next. This had the same smoothness, red pepper spice and core leather & coffee notes, but the spice was more prominent and there was a touch more richness then the Churchill or Gran Toro sizes. Pinar del Rio Robusto - 5” x 50 - Domincan & Nicaraguan tobaccos in a reddish Habano Sungrown wrapper. Very earthy with a notable well fermented tobacco aroma. Cedar, spice and everything nice! What else have you been smokin' Bob? SouthBound Series Latitude by Jameson Cigars: Latitude is the first release in the bundled SouthBound Series. A medium-bodied value smoke meant to be enjoyed every day. Latitude features Dominican fillers bound with a Criollo 98 leaf from the Dominican Republic and finished off with a broadleaf wrapper from Pennsylvania. Punch After Dinner Maduro: If you want an 'authentic' full-bodied Honduran blend you can't miss with this cigar. Blended with Honduran, Nicaraguan and Dominican tobaccos wrapped in oily Ecuadorian-grown Sumatra wrappers, it is rich in flavor, high in quality and affordable. Cigar of the Week - ORTSAC Bulletproof Torpedo 6.25 x 54 The unusual cigar name is "Castro" spelled backwards. The 20 count box is made of the same type of material used for bullet-proof vests (however, the box is not bullet-proof grade). Origin: Santiago, Dominican Republic Wrapper: Nicaraguan, Corojo Binder: Dominican Filler: Dominican & Nicaraguan fillers, aged for 5 years Sizes: Robusto: 5 x 52; Toro Gordo: 6 x 54; Torpedo: 6 1/4 x 54 What else have you been smokin' Dale? EPC Short Run 2012 - I wasn’t able to take notes while I smoked this, but enjoyed it tremendously. Compares favorably with the earlier version, but lacks just a touch of the depth and complexity. Trinidad Ingenios, 2007 Edicion Limitada - 6.5” (165mm) x 42 - This Cervantes, or Lonsdale vitola was a new special size for the Trinidad limited edition in 2007. They were presented in a cedar box of 12 cigars in one layer. The cigar is finished with a pigtail cap and has the standard band used since 2003 with the EL band below it. More aged barnyard flavors then when I first tried one in 2008, and a much more pleasant experience. Still has lots more aging potential! Fuente Fuente OpusX Bad to the Bone - A mid-sized Salamone shape with the unmistakable “firecracker” type head finish. The nipple of the foot is finished in a maduro wrapper. Probably the sweetest Opus X I’ve ever had. Mixed with great spice, cedar and cereal grain flavors, that toffee-like sweetness was a perfect combination. Full bodied, med-full strength and off the chart full flavored! It burned perfectly, clear to the nub, for 85 minutes and I immediately wanted another one. What else have you been smokin' Bob? Davidoff Millenium Blend - A robusto sized pack of pure joy. There are some cigars that when I smoke them, the pure quality, complexity and savoir faire just make my eyes light up and really appreciate the better cigars. This is one. Mild to medium with fine smooth flavors of leather, nuts, coffee and excellent acidity. An excellent cigar. My Father Le Bijou - I smoke a lot of cigars every week and it is nice to get some that really stand above the rest. This cigar is peppery, smoky and very smooth. What's My Band?- This week's unbanded, the Cromagnon Knuckle Dragger Petite Robusto, was suggested by Derek Matthews. Do you have a suggestion for the unbanded cigar of the week? Cigar of the Week - Toro y Leon Habano Claro Exclusivo This exceptional cigar is a mélange of carefully selected and extremely aged tobacco leaves from Toro y Leon's fields in Esteli and Jalapa Valley in Nicaragua. Born from Cuban-seed long-filler and binder, these cigars are all draped in a rare Habano-seed “desflorado” wrapper. The plants require constant vigilance and when the flower buds are just getting ready to bloom they are cut off giving the tobacco an extra rich and smooth flavor, making this type of wrapper to be among the best and the most expensive available anywhere. Other Habano Claro sizes: RETAIL NAME FACTORY NAME RING GAUGE LENGTH Dorado No. 2 Viñetas 50 6" Prominente Selección No.3 50 7-3/4" Histórico Selección No.1 48 7" Exclusivo Julietas 46 7" Elegancia Calypsos 35 7-1/4" No. 4 Populares 42 5" Famoso Deliciosos No. 2 52 5" Prestancia Centro No. 2 38 6-1/4" What else have you been smokin' Dale? El Centurion Robusto - 5” x 50 - A Nicaraguan puro made by Pepin Garcia utilizing Criollo ‘98 and Corojo ‘99 tobaccos that were matured for 3 years prior to rolling wrapped in an oily Habano leaf. This line was kicked off with only 850 boxes in 2007. Coffee, spice, caramel, cedar and roasted nuts are just some of the well balanced flavors in the full bodied smoke. The cigar starts off with that signature Pepin pepper in a creamy base. A light fruitiness like Bartlet pears appears occasionally throughout the cigar. The room aroma is bold and leathery. A truly wonderful cigar that pairs well with coffee or good brandy. Thanks to Paul P. for sharing this cigar - it’s right in my wheelhouse! La Escepcion Edicion Regional Italia, Selectos Finos (panatela) - 6.5” (166mm) x 38 - This regional edition revives an old Cuban brand that was established in the 1850’s and was discontinued in 1989. Habanos SA released 2000 boxes of this in 2011 for the Italian market, packaged in dress boxes of 25. Many thanks to Mark Neff for giving me the opportunity to try this cigar, which by the way, is a cigar worthy of a limited edition. Superior construction with a silky smooth Colorado Claro wrapper. The draw is just barely snug at the start, but opens up nicely after about ½”. Medium bodied, cool smoke is produced in spades, with a sweet cedar and light earthy core of flavors. The cigar is complex, offering additional flavors all along it’s length - black tea, citrus, sugar cane sweetness, light coffee and mild white pepper are just some of the overtones that easily were noted. A very nice cigar with a sophistication to it. Perfect anytime, but one I’d especially choose for a formal occasion. What else have you been smokin' Bob? CAO OSA SOL Lot 50 Cabaiguan Maduro Robusto - Craig inspired me. Also smoked more of the Flor de Copan - not a bad filler stick.. What's My Band?- This week's unbanded, the Avo Heritage Short Robusto cigar was provided by Jeff Curtis. Bob: Distinct hay aroma on the prelight sniff test. It's a nubby or what is now being called a half corona by some. Paired with Frogs Leap Chardonnay 2010 which is a herbal, astringent, crisp wine, the cigar is medium flavored but too much strength. The Cigar has a nutty retrohale. Together, the cigar is elevated with more smoothness and less bitter flavor. This cigar seems to burn hot and has a leathery, nutty retrohale but with too much nicotine. Wine was GR8T with or without the cigar. Last ⅓ of the cigar I got some leather and coffee flavor but it was too late to save this stick. Now I need to brush my teeth... Dale: Peaty barnyard aroma on the prelight. Wrapper is a gorgeous, oily Colo Maduro color. Good draw and good construction. Full bodied with a leather core. Some toffee sweetness, coffee and a touch of toasted nuts. Copious amounts of cool smoke. Some tannins in the last half gave good balance to the savory flavors. A bit strong, but not overly - best for pairing with a peaty Scotch like Lagavulin or Talisker, or maybe a big tawny Port. I think Honduras tobacco, no guess as to mfg.
