An open and honest conversation with two young and healthy 20 something year old men. Kristoff is my stepson and currently a semi-permanant fixture in the household. Taking some time away from the university life and experiencing a fulltime job with crazy schedules. Jake- one of Kristoff's best friends, is also living out the blue collar lifestyle. Taking it on the chin like the rest of us, when life dishes it out. We discuss what life is like in the current world of fast technology, social media, political controversy, and fading traditions. How faith has been a pivotal piece for each of us in our survival of mental health challenges. Jake and Kristoff (the 20 somethings) grew up together and both found refuge in the sport of baseball throughout their high school career. Which obviously was't that long ago. Although humor seems to be the initial hardware used in navigating such vulnerability, it isn't long before each of us begin to expose our deepest programming. From surviving our childhood to understanding the scope of fatherhood as we have experienced it. This discussion dives deep into our own personal experiences. Message from Dave Morriss I am planning to "retire" from the Hacker Public Radio Janitorial Team. I have been helping to administer HPR for over 12 years now. I first offered help to Ken in 2012 in response to an appeal he made. We met at OggCamp in that year, and I joined the Community News recording for episode 1066 in September 2012. My first show was 1091 in October that year. I will turn 75 in December 2024, and am finding that I don't have the energy to do as much as I could when I first joined. I also want to be able to devote more time to the various personal projects I have. I plan to consolidate all my scripts on the HPR Gitea repositories, and document all the processes I have been looking after. I want to have completed the handover by the end of March 2025. I will continue as an HPR host for as long as I can after that. I have had a wonderful 12 years as an HPR Janitor and will always look back on it with great pleasure. And Christophe also has Tourette's Syndrome, which means, and as most people might understand it, that people have tics. They often say things involuntary. Sometimes they might even have physical tics, I'm guessing. And let's see how that gives Kristoff a particular perspective that most of us can't see. And today we're going to talk about the spirit of marketing. And that's an interesting phrase that you used Kristoff. Tell us what that means to you. I think that means ultimately, like, how, how much of yourself, how human your approach to marketing is, how much you deviate from the notion that there has to be sort of a calculated approach. It's very it's a lot more human, I think. Yeah, so, for example, like I have Tourette's. ----- You were more transparent that way. And I'm wondering, have you been told that before that you appear to be more transparent with your feelings? Yeah, that's, um, that's a large, a large part of, I think, I think that's some part, at least a component of my success, is that I don't pretend to have confidence. I'm, yeah, I make no effort to false, to falsify that it doesn't it doesn't help. It doesn't help because people can see it, and then they just sort of pity you in secret. But if you, if you confront it, I feel like they can get on board with that, and they can, they can think within themselves, like, you know, what would I be doing in this situation, rather than, oh gosh, look what he's doing in this situation. They discussed the Ferio Tego Summa cigar, Michael's theory on cigar blends, and his take on what 2024 will bring for the cigar industry. He spent 7 years in the US Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer. Josh transitioned from the Navy and ran operations and business development for a manufacturing company in his hometown of Syracuse, NY. It was two years of record growth there before Josh and wife Kassandra knew they wanted to join the digital revolution and went straight to the heart of it all in San Francisco where they first met best friends and current Nomad Capital Ventures business partners, Jered & Carly DaCosta, and family. Josh's first tech job was at early-stage HomeSuite, think Airbnb for monthly furnished rentals (before Airbnb started doing it) – he ran all things automation on the supply side. His love for building automation tools saw him on to Cisco Meraki, a growth business unit powering Cisco's current strategy. He built a team of technical program managers and drove several strategic data projects across the organization. Concurrent with his time at Meraki, Josh earned his MBA from The Wharton School as a double major in Business Analytics and Joint Marketing and Operations Management. In 2020, the pandemic enabled remote work and Josh & Kass knew they would go straight to the Beaches of Jax, FL – originally their first Navy duty station and where they got engaged, now a new homebase for them and their four kids. They executed in rapid succession four deals, two syndicated, and bid farewell to their W-2's to fully focus on their business and family. As of 2023, NCV collectively has $60MM under management and their hospitality brand, Nomad Hospitality, has almost 100 listings.
